    >PC stuff implied nor wanted - just thought it was funny). :)

Sorry, can't help myself. The Mac will NOT go the way of the 8-track or
Betamax. It is clearly superior technology and I believe the best metaphor for
this is Prog music vs. Alternative. We will survive and eventually have a more
    significant position in the market.

    >Alternative music. From what I can tell, just by virtue of it's
    >popularity, Alternative is anything but. In the literal sense,
    >Progressive music is probably the most alternative music there is right
    >now when you consider the radio play and mtv play it gets.

I agree, Alternative is actually mainstream music (see my note above) while
    Prog is actually alternative

Huh? What Metallica "should've done after the Black album"? Correct
me if I'm wrong, but Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge was a live album. So you've
heard the new album? How is it?

I've heard "Cemetary Gates", "Walk", "This Love", "5 Minutes Alone", "I'm
Broken", "Planet Caravan", and "The Badge". Sorry, I still don't like them.

I saw parts of that special also. Those guys jammed with a capital "J"!
I agree with Scott about Symbol Guy's guitar abilities, this guy is
    definitely up there.

    >I hate the fact that Alice In Chains and Soundgarden are pulled into the
    >whole "grunge"scene. THEY ARE METAL and very talented.

Funny, when Soundgarden won Best Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Video on eMpTyV's
awards, I think Chris Cornell said something to the effect of, "This
isn't heavy metal". Of course, the video was for "Black Hole Sun", but I
don't think they consider themselves heavy metal. Kim Thayil once
said, "Rock n Roll's a dumb medium, but it's fun as hell. Intellectually,
it's pretentious at best. Aesthetically, it's significantly lacking".

I'll second that motion, Koba the Funky Master! Dread is one of my
favorite imports. The 2 studio tracks are Symbol Guy's "17 Days" and
LC's "TV News". Do you know what the Japanese liner notes say?

    >It went something like this: "Don't be as stupid as Kurt Cobain was. If
    >you're feeling depressed and thinking about killing yourself, be smart
    >and do the right thing-take someone you hate with you."

At the Toledo show in April, the lead singer started playing the
bass line intro to "Come As You Are", abruptly stopped, and then said in
his deep voice, "The benefits of suicide".

    >THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ALTERNATIVE MUSIC!!!!!@!@!@!@! It is not a
    >Music Catagory, but rather a lifestyle and a dress. LISTEN CAREFULLY to
    >the "music" and YOU to will be enlightened.

I'll respect your opinion, but IMO there will always be "alternative
music" as long as there is popular music. Metallica's Kirk Hammett said
that now metal is alternative. Here are the last 5 albums I have
listened to in order: Awake, Matthew Sweet's 100% Fun, Metallica's
Justice album, ACOS, and Seal's first album. What's this prove?
Nothing, I guess. On with the mindless rambling...

    >The show will be mostly on Dream Theater!! He will dub clips from my DT
    >Live in Tokyo video into the show...

    Isn't that illegal?

    >Just picked up the Silent Man single at Best Buy in Des Moines, Iowa of all
    >places for $10.

Is the Japanese LATM available at Best Buy? Every time I'm there, all
they have is the other version with "Surrounded".

    >How about at the con when we jam with DT, we take a half hour of our
    >time out and have everyone who can play any indtrument they have with
    >them get up on stage and have a mega Ytse-Rendition of ACOS!

Whoa, DT's been confirmed at the con? Be careful before making such
    incredible (but possible) statements.

    >Etheridege, The drummer for Living Color, The Drummer and guitar player for
    >Aerosmith, most of Collective Soul (I could be wrong on that one it might
    >be Candlebox) and a whole load of jazz players.

I've began this thread by mentioning Calhoun, and Melissa Etheridge did
go to Berklee. Other people have mentioned Gary Hoey, Chris DeGarmo, and
Joe Satriani. I couldn't find anything about Hoey, nothing on DeGarmo and
Berklee, and I know Satch didn't go there. To my recollection, DeGarmo
was in Ryche after high school and has recorded albums (and an EP)
since. I highly doubt members of Aerosmith went there, although they
could be honorary degree holders. I highly doubt Candlebox and Collective
Soul also, but it could be possible.

    >a joke of a vehicle!(DAMN, Idalis is FOOOOIIIIIIIIINE!!!). I only catch
    >the MTV once in a while, but I'm sure this argument is pretty close to
    >correct.

I brought up this thread also. Steven Johnson deciphered my Tech Specs
correctly! Lenny Kravitz, Boyz II Men, LL, and (the now defunct)
Arrested Development have all been on Unplugged along with Mariah
Carey. My point was that look at these handful of artists compared to
their white peers: Chris Isaak, Kiss, Live, Hole, REM, Soul Asylum, Bob
Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, the Cranberries, 10,000
Maniacs, Pearl Jam, Page/Plant, Nirvana, STP, Aerosmith, and the list
goes on and on. Don't get me wrong, I like some of these groups (QR was
on once), but there is obviously a lack of representation.

Finally, a shot out to Neil Gallop for the correspondence. Death (or
    weird dreams) to all wankers!

    Hey all ....

OK, now that you all have read the 1000 jams that showed up in
you mailboxes today, lemme explain. Somehow (i don't know how, so
don't ask) a permission got fucked up (the CDA has been suspended, I'm
allowed to say that) and basically the listprocessor couldn't process
any mail. I found one problem and Ken found another and since I don't
have root access on the system, I couldn't fix em, but Ken did this
morning and its all fixed now. Thanks again, Ken.

Just so you all know, I have been extremely busy lately, just
took a second job which is gonna become my first (well, kinda already
is) so I am working alot of hours a week, so if you send me mail,
it may take a few days to get a reply. Also, Ken is extremely busy
himself and is try to catch up with both work and school, so there
will be a Metropolis list sometime, just not right this minute.

Speaking of Metropolis, Ken has been having some problems
with the people who serve his dns, but most of it is fixed, but there
may still be a few glitches of service, just resend the message later
    if you have a problem.

            Another reminder about the lists:

ytsejam@ax.com is the mailing list address
ytsejam-request@ax.com is the mailing request address
    metropolis@ARASTAR.com is the Metropolis address
metropolis-request@ARASTAR.com is the Metropolis request address

As for content. Hey, I love hearing about other bands and
other discussion besides DT. There is little to no DTC on IRC
and its still fun as hell. You should come visit some time. Just
mail me if you need some help getting on.

OK, i think that's all from me for now. Oh, and someone,
(I have been reading these pretty quickly today) said that you
people at Universities had it made for email. How about us people
who work at two Internet Service Providers??? ;)

    Dear jammers,

Hi there! I read the post about the YtseCon #1 dub, and unfortunately I know him personally. He's my ex-friend, and he was the only one at the con with a video camera. I am not in speaking terms with him at all, so I can't really do anything about it. I don't know what else to tell you, but he was also the one who interviewed Mike P at the con, but look how that turned out. In a way, it was my fault to bring him to the convention, but I thought that he was reliable at the time, boy was I wrong! I don't know what to do though, but I'll try to get a copy of the con through someone else...that's the best I can do.

BTW, I think he hasn't made any dubs for anyone before, but I could be mistaken. I mean, I don't even have a dub, and we went to HS together!! Anyone on the jam have a dub?

    Yours, Jeff =)

TO the guy from Madison, NJ. I work at an 88.9 out of West Long Branch, NJ. I do a prog rock show on Saturdays from noon to 3:00. I get requests as well, not as often as I'd like, but I get requests for lots of bands, bands I never even heard of like PFM and stuff like that. I had a girl request a Yes song, and I don't mean Owner of a Lonely Heart, more like the Ancient Giatns under the Sun or something like that. For those who don't know, the song is 22 minutes of total chaos. It's great. From an album called Tales from Topographic Oceans. If you decide to buy it, listen to it in chunks. Don't try to digest the whole album, because you may need brain surgery afterwords.

how did Kevin do the synth/.piano parts in surrounded live? My guess is that he layered a piano sound with a synth sound. Having the combined sound made the song sound a lot like the Cd. Of course, I like that choir sound on the CD, but I think Kevin does a good job of playing the song live. Keyboard payers sometimes overdo it in the studio, and some do better at reproducing their own stuff than others. Now, if only Tonyt Kay could do his own stuff live, (Wait, we don't have to worry about that anymore, do we?>)

hehe - it is a bit cheesy really! it's NOT one of the best songs off Awake. Prog rock in general does have a tendency to get a bit cheesy though. (IMO - Flame away!)

Well IMO I think the drums on ACOS sound great!. I think the snare ring is intentional, and not annoying. The piccolo is meant to sound 'natural' and 'open'.I personally have a 14" x 6" snare which I tune real high to get a nice crack from it, but I use no dampening or muffleing to stop the ring cuz I like the sound. I feel that tuning the snare like that makes it stand out more over the rest of the instruments as opposed to tuning low and tying to get a more conventional sound such as the snare sound in I&W. I personally feel that I&W was OVERproduced if you see what I mean. It sounded TOO polished. I have borrowed TSM single from a friend recently and it contains a demo of Take The Time, which in my opinion sounds better than the album version, because although the snare still has a trigger, the rest of the drums (and instruments for that matter) have a higher EQ and are a lot clearer.

Oh well, time to go do some real work! Oh and to those I spoke to on IRC on Fri night, (JHSrocker?) I had a great time at the pub! - See you this friday!
