Me and all my friends were watching it on the news right after it happened.
It's a pity that guy shot himself. I wanted to shoot the fucker.
We all went to a concert by "The Bandit Beatles" tonight, and when they
played "Yesterday", all 2000 students at the gig were in tears because it
was "yesterday" the damn thing happened.
It's the kind of thing you'd expect in America, but not right here in
Scotland.
Speechless.

Heehee...no offense Rob, but seeing that all throughout your post just
cracked me up. :-) Substitute the B for an N. ;-)

It would be more interesting if we hadn't done this like three times already
since my Jamming career began. ;-) Ask me on IRC, Rip.

I don't know, though. Sometimes I wish that I could re-experience DT for the
first time. I was one of the few (from what I've heard, anyways) that liked
DT from the first 10 seconds of what I heard (6:00). Those first 10 seconds
were the most refreshing breath of music (Huh?!) that I had had in a while.
I would be grateful if I could experience that again. Also, I liked it when
the whole album was a big blob of killer riffs, beautiful melodies and odd
time signatures. Sometimes less form is better (to me).
I feel like I'm going to miss something. Joe Satriani is playing here in
Vegas on the 16th....but I'm not going. I've never heard any of his music,
but I feel like I should be going to the concert. ARgh!!!!

Hiya, y'all!
Hope you don't mind me poking my nose in here with a non-DT post (but, in a
way, it is a DT-related thing, since we're really into 'em) . . .
We're an all (or mostly) originals band with a forthcoming CD. We practice
in Mercer County, NJ (if ya don't know where it is, you're probably too far
away to make rehearsals :-) ). We need a bassist with his/her own rig,
transportation, and musical ideas. Height, weight, hair, teeth, color,
religion, sex, or TV theme song preference are not important; nor is age if
it's over 21. Fitting into a team and wanting to play out and write together
is.
Sound interesting? Email me @ ddlsdacln@aol.com!
Thanks!
...........peace . . .

stop. I don't have time to moderate the list right now, or something

Definitely ACoS. Why? Because of Derek's renamed train noise: to quote kurt@fgallery.com:
"I wouldn't say its a train..I like to think its a Tie Fighter flying past another ship... you know..that sound they made..."

-You start gaining friends because of your incessant recruiting.
-Complete strangers come up to you and comment on your shirt, and ask you where you got it, hoping they can add to their DT collection, thereby naming themself "king of all followers, with X DT things."
-You go to a CD shop, find DT in the clearence bin, and move it to the "Hot Items" section, just to give them more exposure with that reduced price.
-You go into a CD shop hoping youll find something new by DT, knowing full well that you allready own three shirts, a hat, one sticker, two video's, 18 CDs, and that the next DT album wont be out for months.
-You bike for three weeks just so you can spend your gas money on the newest Mike Bahr CD.
-You read, re-read, and re-re-read DT lyrics looking for alternate pronuciations (ie, the last dancing turtle...)
-You read, re-read, and re-re-read DT lyrics trying to FIND the alternate pronunciations that everyone is talking about.
-You know who the hell Bafu, Laussade, and Skadz are.
-You have more DT CDs then socks.
-You wish you grew up in Long Island.
-You want to go to Berklee just to use the same urinals as "the boys."

It sounds like a great idea, but I think MTV monitors the YAK and only puts certain things on the air. Sometimes a monitor comes on and says "Hey 'DirtyMan' you won't get on the air with a post like that." I just don't think they'll let a bunch of "DREAM THEATER RULES!!!!!!!" over the air. I still say if you have AOL give it a try, but don't get your hopes up.

From the faq:
** 4.25 What is "Space-Dye Vest" about? How does Kevin come up with this stuff? In Kevin Moore's words from a Japanese Interview: "It was inspired by... I was looking through a clothing catalog & saw a picture of a girl modeling this piece of clothing called a space-dye vest. And, so, I fell in love with her [laughs] for some strange reason & so the minute I did that, the minute I was just like obsessed w/this person, I was like, 'why am I doing that?' & I noticed that I was doing it a lot lately. And I think the prime reason that I was doing that, and this is what I figured out at the time, was that I had just come out of a relationship where I'd gotten dumped, basically, and so I think the situation was that I wasn't finished giving all that I was ready to give, so I was just, like, throwing it around, you know, just aiming it in different directions. It was a total case of projection. And this song is just trying to sort it out & just kind of admitting that I'm just kind of lost. So it's kind of a dark song. It was very cathartic though."

Heh. The heavist thing I listened to in high school was the Scorps'. Then, I got into Metallica a few years ago. The only thing that instantly hit me as being totally new and awesome was when I first listened to IAW on the way home from the music store. Of course, by then, I was weaned on Rush, so I was prepared. Now, I've liked almost everything that's been recommended here and on a.r.m.p. on the first listen (Fates Warning is the best band that was ever recommended). Cynic and Death took a while to warm up to, but most of that was getting past the vocal style. Listening to the Scorpions (though I still like them a lot) has become rather nostalgic.

I have heard the original demos, (and must admit that I only *slightly* liked them...) and out of curiosity checked out Kev's chroma key page (thanks Airdance for the address!) upon which I found samples of the three songs on the tape, approx one minute or so from each.
my verdict: much better than the original demos (which is, I suppose, to be expected.)
'on the page' and 'chroma key' sounded very good -- keys were good, drumming good, lyrics OK, vox not so good sometimes. unlike his original demos, these are definitely prog. watercooler was not so good...kind of boring, actually...
