For those of you that have talked about the new Mr. Big CD I must
say it's great. This is a group of super talented musicians. Each member
of this band is well respected as a master in their particular area of
excellence. On their new disc entitled "Hey Man" they showed of their
musicianship by using time-changes and intricate guitar, bass, and drum
work throughout the disc. This band has gotten a label as being a "soft-rock"
band because of hits such as "To Be With You" and "Wild World". However,
they also know how to jam if you have listened to other songs of theirs not
played on the radio. This CD is a must for any fan of hard rock music.

I personally also like the Awake snare sound better, but hate the IAW trigger
sound. John Petrucci said to me that he liked it! I couldn't believe it! Mike
does not like it, of course. I heard him play the middle part of Metropolis at
the clinic, and it sounds so much better with all the ghost notes on the
snare!

Congratulations!! This cd kicks some serious ass. I've had it for
almost 4 years, and I just got the chance to see them live. They are,
however, going to aim for a less "progressive" sound, and turn more for the
modern hard rock new wave type rock. Get their other discs, Mods Carve thee
Pig, and the newest one, Outer Space is Just a Martini Away, and you will be
able to see the direction they are heading in.

I am not a huge fan of drum triggers, but sometimes they really do sound nice. It usually depends on the machine you are triggering sounds from, and the quality of the samples, (that's what triggered drums are, usually). Athough nothing will ever beat naturally miked drums, sometimes triggers can really do neat things to a song. I happen to like the drum sounds on ACOS. But, my favorite drums sounds come off of Rush's Signals album, listen to them really closely. In fact, Enchant, a magna carta band, uses that same drum sound, especially on the toms. They sound so melodic like that. It's awesome.

Hey everybody, This is just a waste of bandwidth to say thank you because I actually enjoyed reading the last couple of jams (I don't know the #'s, I'm in ACK mode) The discussion is good and we're all friends again!
A couple of my opinions (more waste of bandwidth): -Shawn Lane rocks (if you're a guitar player, you NEED his stuff. He's also got an instructional video) -I liked the drum sounds on IAW (I'm not a drummer) -My computer's too slow to get the QR cd-rom. :(
Another thing, how in the world can you people afford to buy all those CD's? Do you, like, have real jobs or something? Whoa, that would be cool.

Satriani will be playing at the Embassy Saturday the 30th.
I ran into a copy of Stuart Hamm's _The Urge_ for 2 bucks, and I must say it was really worth it. Most of the album is bass dominant rock music. I was really impressed with the bass solo on the album. It's called "Quahogs Anyone?" It starts starts off slow, then breaks into the Peanuts theme song, then into a countryish tune that sounds like a banjo player using a bass guitar instead of a banjo!
Can't wait to hear Stu in concert...

Hello All. WOW! I knew of some Progressive bands in CT, but it didn't hit me untill I attended this show that there are some INCREDIBLE PROGRESSIVE BANDS IN LITTLE OLD CONNECTICUT! Even though the monitors on stage did not work properly the bands were all tight as HELL and performed flawlessly. Now lets start with the start shall we?
1) MISCONCEPTION - Picture this you are the singer/ guitar player of a Prog band and you are at sound check. You walk up to the mic while you are playing and begin to sing. As soon as you put your face near the mic you are hit by a barrage of electric shocks. What is the first thing you do? You tell the sound guy so he can fix this little problem, right? Well what if the response is, "just tell him not to play when he is singing"? You guessed it folks you grin and bear it and recieve electric shock therepy for the sake of the fans in the audience. This is exactly what Seth did! And let me tell you he sounded great especially with the harmony vocals. I have watched and listened to these guys progress since they put out their first tape. I used to have them down to WNHU for interviews on my Progressive show. Most of the songs are 10 min. or so and hold your attention throughout without getting boring. Ok, now, recorded material they have two demos plus a Full CD coming soon. When I get info on ordering I will let you know.
2) SOUNDSCAPE - You may have already heard about these guys. They released a 2 CD rock opera "America the Beautiful" last year. They are about to release a new disc "Discovery" and let me tell you it will blow you away! It is over 78 min. long and the tracks I have heard are just incredible. The singer/ Keyboard player has a very emotional theatric stage presence and is Mr. Range as far as vocal ability. The drummer sets his kit up SIDE WAYS! He is Mr. Finesse and I kid you not when I say he ranks right up there with one Mr. Portnoy. If you would like to find out more about this band check out this Home Page from Angel Thorne Music: http://www.e1.com/ATM/ATM.html At this point I don't think they have samples from "Discovery" but they do have some from the rock opera "America the Beautiful" which is a beautiful piece about the life of M. Monroe.
3) ALTER EGO - This band is on the heavier side of Prog and was quite good. I am afraid I don't have any info on them as far as recorded material but will post again when I do and review what I get.
4) IMAGE BEYOND - This is FATES WARNING's original drummer STEVE ZIMMERMAN's band. Need I say more? Ok probably not but I will! This man is incredible and also incredible is his ability to choose musicians to perform with. This band has all the energy and power of pre-moody Fates and I had the chills throughout their show. As far as recorded material, I ran into John Arch at the show and he has gracefully agreed to get ahold of what he can from Steve so keep your fingers crossed! What ever I can get my hands on I will review and if there is a way to order such items I will be sure to supply all with that info.
Bottom Line, if you see a show with any of these bands listed GO!!!! I am hoping to make a cheesy little web site with my free 2Meg page from AOL and upload sound samples when I get some recorded material.

I am 15 years old. Just said that for whoever asked who was under 18.
I have determined that anyone who stayed home to watch MTV spring break is a loser, and The Grind is the worst show on TV, period.
About Rush and the Hall of Fame - I heard from my guitar teacher that Rush is the overall most sucessful band in the world, as far as total album sales. He says this is due to the fact that they have a steady fan base, they never quit, and they release a lot of albums. Can anyone justify this?
About the library. I have been screwed over by friends when I have lent CD's out and I have become very stingy about lending my CD's. There really has to be something in it for me to convince me.
To whoever complained about the immaturity on this list, try the White Zombie list. They never talk about the band and I have never seen the word Fuck used more in one sentence in my life. Language doesn't bother me at all, but there is a point where you quit sounding cool and start sounding pretentious. This list is a breath of fresh air. At least we try to talk about the band.
DTC: Just a little anecdote. When my band played this Sunday, our drummer found an ugly old vest in his basement and wrote Space-Dye Vest on it and wore it live. He showed it to people all night and got many looks of confusion. Not one person outside of the band got it. Inside jokes rule.

It's pretty damn sad. And VH1 was only decent for a few years (of course, I've never had cable (hell, I watch MASH reruns when I get home from work at 11:30 on a 4" screen)), but I only see the music channels occaisionally at other people's houses. I was in Houston in ~ '85 and they started up a new *local* music channel (5) that had videos 24 hrs/day. After 2 weeks, the only sponser they could get was Marine World. Needless to say, I don't think it survived for long (I was only there 2.5 weeks). That's okay, you can only play Pat Benetar and Dead or Alive videos so many times before dudes start to riot.
You know, Though I cringe at the clothing styles (like when I see repeats of _My Bodygard_ late at night or the "Subdivisions" vid.), the 80s were pretty bitchen.
