I thought this'd be my last post on this subject, but the latest
post on this forced me to write. I can think of few bassists who compare to
JM. I've never heard Ellefson, but (don't bother cluttering the jam with
angry mail, send it to me) I've heard very few metal bassists who do more
than hold down the bass parts. While this is a bassist's primary function,
it doesn't take much of a player to handle it. Take me. I'm 16, have very
little rock experience, but after only playing a few years, I've acquired
the skills to hold down a rhythm section. This does not not make me as good
as all those heavy metal bassists, but I could easily do a bare bones
version of what many of them do. Again, this does not make them any less of
musicians, but the low end melodies get ignored more often than not. JM is
extremely good, comparable to Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Stanley Clarke, and
(his idol) Tony Levin. Check out his work in Metropolis and at about 12:30
into aCoS.
Speaking of bass, I get to see Stanley Clarke in Cleveland in April.
He's playing at the Tri-C Jazz Fest. I'll be there playing bass for the
Toledo Youth Jazz Ensemble. Stan is a phenomenal bass player. For you
Cleveland area bassists, if you haven't heard him, CHECK HIM OUT!

Glad there are Mr.Big fans on the list. I dig 'em as much (well almost) as DT
because of their musical abilities. Only through this list did I know they had
a new disc out and I bought it yesterday. My thoughts? Tied with "Lean Into
It" for second. I disagree with Richie on a number of things. I think their
first album was by far the best. It showed excellent songwriting and
arrangement abilities, definitely chops and had a real fine edge to it. Since
then, their albums have had too much "Wild World" and not enough 'Colorado
Bulldog."
I was waiting for at least a "throw the dog a bone" blisteringly fast groove
on the latest disc and found none. It does have a better base of blues
-influenced songs, but not enough edge. If "....Wind Blows" is the first
single, it blows as a choice. All it does is perpetuate the myth of Mr.Big
being a ballads-only band (like Boys II Men). I'd suggest "Toyland" as a first
single. It stirs up the speakers a bit. Very lively. And for the second album
in a row, Paul Gilbert is acting like he doesn't want to acknowledge his
shredding past. "Take Cover" BEGS for a solo that combines phat sustains with
shredding fills and we don't get SHIT!!!
It's bad enough that mainstream music today lacks any guitar wizards...or ANY
masters of their instruments. It's all open chord crap. These guys have the
chance to blow minds away with their talent and songs short enough to get
radio play. The "best of both worlds" as some may have it. It wish they'd go
back to the "girl done me wrong", chunky, chops filled, good-time songs of
their debut release. It easily outpaces every other release! LATER-

p.s Seeing Mr.Big in concert is a killer show. Being able to share a vodka
bottle with 'em after the show is even better. Ah...the days of college gone
by.

Yes, he does use some drum samples on Images and Words, but maybe he's just
talking about how he makes other drum tracks that lay over the original
ones. Like for example, in Learning to Live, he plays some sort of Timbale
or something over his normal drum part...if you listen closely you can tell
that in order for this to be possible he would need four arms...so yes he
does lay down other percussion tracks on top. This takes nothing away from
his drumming though...he is still one of the best drummers I've ever heard.
He just did that in the studio to build to the song. Live, he sounds just
great and plays everything, except for a few sound bites (ex. the Pantera
"By Demons Be Driven" bit that he put into his solo) he has programmed into
drum triggers, so there's nothing bad about it. talk later.

I just got some cool videos from Scott Cook. Two are from 1989. One was from the MCA Showcase, the other was from Sundance (yes, the one where John P picks his nose) Charlie was great! If you liked him on WDADU, but you heard Consciously Unreal amd thought he was no good, think again. He just had a bad night. He sounded real good. The band seemed real tight. Anyome know if Charlie is still friends with the band? Anyway, after the show, I heard one of the biggest pieces of bullshit I've ever heard! John P says "I should've never switched to guitar. I can't fucking play this thing!" and then, I see the same Mike Portnoy that I saw on the japan ppv: "(frantically) Anyone got a light?!?!?!" Cool vid.

the theme for the trasformers movie was done by a group called 'lion'. i got the soundtrack and it is pretty good. the vocalist for 'lion' is pretty impressive, but not as good as james. :)

Various people have posted about Mike's snare. It's all fine and dandy what you think. But there is one glaring misconception that has popped up.
Drums can be tuned to a pitch, but not to a note. You don't try to find a Bb or whatever. There is no note you tune to. With drums, pitch describes the frequency range that the drum or cymbal emphasizes, not a note. Your drums and your cymbals are in tune with a song, no matter what key signature it's in. Think about it. If drums and cymbals produced notes, you would either have to limit yourself to a few key signatures, or have an out of tune drummer.
A drummer friend of mine explained in great detail what I tried to explain. Any of you drummers out there care to back me up on this and maybe clarify what I just said?
BTW, I'm a guitar player [who wishes he had either stuck with piano earlier in his life, or took up drums instead of guitar...]
