That fuckin' John Petrucci. He goes and uses a wah wah pedal on
Awake and ACoS. That's soooo self indulgent.

I'm gonna hafta throw in my spare change (the pan handlers sure
ain't gettin' it....) on this "Mike's snare sound on ACoS" topic. I
thought we kinda finished this thread back in OCfuckin'TOBER, but hey,
let's dig up a corpse! Mike's snare drum sounds like a snare drum.
Period. "It's like he's playing a loud Bbmaj7add#11 every other beat...
It's like a melodic snare.... It's self indulgent on Mike's part...."
Uhhhh, no. Sound travels in waves. Snare sounds, too. Differences in
frequency of these waves produce different pitches. Since the sound
produced by a snare drum is very short, it's difficult to really hear a
definite pitch. So I'd have to disagree with Larry ("the old geezer of
the ytsejam" or whatever) on his belief that the snare "pitch" ruins
everything in ACoS. Larry, if your ears are really that sensitive to
snare drum "pitch," then why don't you hear a change in the pitch when
Mike plays it softer? Weaker snare hit = less of a tension increase in
the drum head = different period of oscillation of the drum head =
different frequecy = different pitch. Or is Mike such a precise machine
that all of his snare hits are a perfect "Bb?" And about the use of that
snare sound being "self indulgent," I just have a few questions for Larry:

    1) Did you write that Guitar for the Practicing Musician review of ACoS?

    2) Don't you think it's awfully self-indulgent of Mike to have written
    the lyrics about his life?

    3) Shouldn't he have written them about them about current American
politics or something much "more important?"

    4) Isn't just the entire album incredibly self-indulgent? I mean,
they're all playing their instruments!!! They're probably thinking to
themselves, "Hey, check me out!" the whole time! What head-cases!

    5) You know that guy who wrote an entire novel without using the letter
e? Isn't that incredibly self-indulgent? He probably records all of his
snare drum sounds without reverb and tuned to a perfect "Bb," too.

            Answers?

My damn dog started barking along to ACoS today, but he wasn't in
pitch!! Talk about a self indulgent dog! It's a good thing I kicked him

    again!

Didn't White Lion do the theme song to "Transformers: The Movie"? I
think it sounded really cool.....really 80's but really cool. There's a
wicked guitar solo in it too. Dream Theater should cover that song.

Oh man, i'm leaving for spring break today so that means i'm going to come
back and there's going to be like seven hundred jams to read when i get
back. Anyway, how come no one has said anything about Derek being on TV? I
was watching "Friends" yesterday and all of a sudden i see Chandler's new
roommate and it's like whoah! I'm telling you, that's Derek. Or at least
what he would look like on crack. Too bad they got rid of him. Oh, and
another thing, how many of you have seen "Dead Poets Society"? That part
where Robin Williams is wispering "carpe diem" at them when they're looking
at the old pictures totally freaked me out! It sounded just like the
wispered part in ACOS. Did they sample that or something? Does anybody
know what I'm talking about? Ok, I'm outta here. Peace out, biatch!

Issue 13 of Metropolis Watch is now complete and printed, sitting on my desk
and waiting to be addressed. The first bunch will hopefully be in the big
blue box with the eagle Monday - no mail here on campus on Saturdays,
    unfortunately.

It contains DT news as up-to-date as I had it (nothing you guys don't already
know, but not all my subscribers are online, donchaknow ;), live photos,
Hairball's take on the Birch Hill show, and some reviews - Savatage, Gamma
Ray, Blind Guardian, Shadow Gallery... you get the point.

If you're interested (hint, hint), it's only a lousy buck an' a quarter for
the issue - that covers, postage, printing, and stuff like that. This is
entirely nonprofit... You can send it to the address below in the form of
cash (well hidden!!!) or checks in US$, but PLEASE, no money orders - the
campus PO won't cash them, and I haven't seen the inside of a federal PO in
months. Any inquiries should be directed here to my AOL address, not my
school account - you'll get a faster resonse here.

    Jammers,
I was talking to a friend the other day and he said something that
was very interesting. He mentioned to me that he ordered I & W from BMG.
I said "Cool, you'd like that the drummer is excellent." I should mention that
my friend is a drummer and he is pretty good. Anyway, he said back to me:
"Yeah, I've heard the album before. He is a good drummer. He's a really good
drummer even though he samples some of his stuff."

Could this be true? I never heard anyone on the jam mention drum sampling and
even though I son't have a trained ear for that sort of thing, I don't really
hear any instances where he did sampling.

If anyone has any feedback on this, pleae post it. I'm interested in what you
drummers have to say about this.
                                            Thanks,

    Hey,

Here's MY responses to some of the things said here:

    1. Pyramid Schemes are illegal in most states. The people who first start to send out money, make all the money and as the scheme gets larger, the more people end up losing money.

    2. White Lion Rules! Vitto is an idol of mine, one of the players to inspire me to learn the guitar. I loved his use of harmonics.

    3. I like the sound of the snare on ACoS.

Ans last, I pose a question:

How many sarcastic responses does it take to become a Ytse-Celebrity?

Let's not start any inter-list fights here. I know many of us are upset about the chain mail thing, but the listadmins for each of the lists should do whatever they see fit to do. It's over, so let's go back to our respective lists - I for one have no reason to get into a war with members of the Nirvana war and I'm sure people on the RATM list don't want to watch us fight.

Let this be the last crosspost, with my apologies.

    >1) The whole ropas thing is this: Ropas is the Spanish word for >clothes. Ok, as resident degree-holder in Spanish (ha! I remember what happened to the last guy who claimed that...) I think that it should be known that the Spanish word for clothes is "ropa" not ropas. See clothes, like pants, and other fun things like that are collective. It is impossible to say "Donde esta tu ropas?" You could say "Donde estan tus ropas?" because the verb/pronoun/noun all have to agree in gender and in number, but it wouldn't make much sense. You should say "Donde esta tu ropa?" Maybe the Panamanian list member could chime in. Ok, now that I am through with saying elitist, stupid grammar-related things, we can get on with the DT-related material... Oh. There isn't any? Oops. Ok, now for some brief new release reviews! Helloween - The Time of the Oath Typical Helloween. Some fast songs, slow songs, boring songs...quality musicianship, if not standard silly lyrics. I miss Michael Kiske, but I don't mean it in a "Blaze Bayley sucks, bring back Bruce" sort of way. Andi Deris is competent. Markus "big head" is still pretty interesting as a bass player, and Uli, the ex-drummer from Gamma Ray, plays some nice material, too. Better on headphones than out loud. Bruce Dickinson - Skunkworks Naming an album with the word "Skunk" in it is always a dangerous proposition. Fortunately Bruce doesn't put out a sub-standard disc, unlike a certain band from whence he came. If Bruce was the reason you kept liking Maiden, even after you realized people like DT (see! there was DT content!!) could play circles around them, you would probably like this disc. The music isn't as cheesy as Balls to Picasso was, ie no lyrics like "shoot all the clowns, shoot, shoot, shoot" Thank God. His voice has matured (euphemism for lost range, I guess) but this still runs rings around the X-Factor, but then it wasn't intended as a Maiden record. If he wanted to play that type of slop, he would have stayed. Some people have detected a grunge influence at work, but honestly, I don't see it. Worth the 12 bucks, in my opinion. Sepultura - Roots Well. How the once mighty thrashers have fallen. We are starting to hear more and more industrial influence. Plus, an over-abundant reliance on the "tribal drums-in-the-jungle" thing. Once was interest- ing. Twice was ok. Three times (keep counting up to 16...) and it's old. Very old. I guess it's heavy, but so what? Same death grunt/growl singing, which was fine circa "Arise," - a killer thrash album. If you thought "Chaos AD" was a trip down the wrong path, then you will hate this record. If you liked the subtle movement towards industrial screaming, then I recommend this album. It isn't horrible - just too long. Track 16 clocks in at over 12 minutes. AND IT'S JUST DRUMS IN THE JUNGLE!!! No song. Just chirping insects and tribal beating. Overkill - The Killing Kind Somewhere, someone put Overkill on autopilot. Still an outstanding live act, their last three studio efforts have been questionable at best. Traditional Overkill run through the Xerox machine. Not bad. Not great. Overkill. If you have listened to them, then you know what I am saying. If you haven't, may I suggest "Horrorscope" or "The Years of Decay" instead? You wouldn't be missing anything. I promise. P.S. Don't take anything too seriously. -- Kevin (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) GO PACKERS...GO WINGS!!!
