This guy speaks the truth of the moment. But it wasn't always taht way.
Before, our arguments lasted about a weekend. Now we're still trying to
get over the shock of... you know who. The more you talk the shit, the
more shit is going to be talked (I figured that one out in my rocket science
class). For all you whiners who bitch about not talking about Nirvana, well
you're just as fucking lazy you assholes (this may not be refering to you).
So here's a Nirvana question. Bleach was recorded for $600. That is dirt
cheap, practically for free for cutting a record. Does anyone know how long
it took? I know that most of the lyrics were written the day before they
recorded which is ludicrous but, effective?

I don't know if this topic has ever been brought up b4... but does anybody
any idea of what TOWHTSTS is about? My interpretation is that it's this guy
who goes to see his girl, and he finds her doing da nasty w/ another guy...
however the chorus doesn't seem to fit anywhere in this interpretation so
    I'm most probably wrong...

Thanks to Kevin for the lessons. I had no idea how to spell or
pronounce any other words in Spanish other than Cervesa ( or
something like that ). I took French for 7 years and probably no less
    of that then Spanish now.
I heard a very rough recording of several upcoming songs on the
next DT album. Iwas with Kenny Myung and he had a tape John had made
for him. Mind you it was not produced and the exact album form was
not set yet, but it was cool. No radio friendly songs here. If any
one was at the Malibu show on L.I. June 13th you heard one of the
tracks ( at least a part of it ) that was played as an instrumental
lead into another one of their songs. Sorry I can't remember which
    one it was.
Kenny also said he may subscribe to the Jam to keep an eye on us.
He said that he wants to see how accurate our info was. Big brother
is watching. Peace, Love, and Hatred.

I've been thinking about the sparse popularity of DT (a depressing
subject) and the immense popularity of (ack) Alternative music. Being in
Toronto, there isn't a big support for DT, (at least not that I know of,
correct me if I'm wrong), yet bands like Oasis and Green Day have droves of
fans. It seems to me that the simpler the band while still trying to keep
some slight vestige of a tune, the more popular. Now as we all know DT isn't
exactly what you would call simple. Whenever I play it for my friends, they
think it's utter crap. Most people like tunes they can hum. DT isn't like
that. You can't easily hum a DT line. So all you people who want DT to
become megastars without selling out, good luck and keep dreaming.

                                            Sincerely, Mike

Well, I stood about 6 feet in front of John at one of the
Awake shows, and I was mesmerized at how fast he was playing
while sliding his left hand up and down the neck about every
nanosecond. I could see he was playing some very complex stuff
incredibly fast. It's just that I can't pick it out when I
listen to the songs. Maybye having a shaved head impairs my
    bass-hearing ability, I honestly don't know!

About Mr. Big: don't get me wrong. I like their first album. It
showed amazing technical ability. But "Lean Into It" is a much more
diverse album. IT was, in my opnion, a big leap forward and became the
blueprint for the next two albums. I like both the "Colorado
Bulldog"-type of song and the "Wild World" type. What I've never been too
fond of is the "Tempremental"-type, which is what the new album mostly
consists of. I totally agree with your take on "Take Cover:" I would have
loved for there to be a guitar solo somewhere in there. But I still think
it's one of the albums best songs nonetheless. "Going Where The Wind
Blows" probably will reinforce Mr. Big's mistaken public image of being a
ballad band, but I think it is still an incredible song. Personally, I
would kill to be associated with that type of song. It's on obvious
release. The truth of the matter is that hard rock bands these days are
only having success with ballads; whether this is a matter of that being
the only type of song that the public wants to hear from these bands or
if it is a matter that these are the only songs that the record companies
want to promote from these type of bands is a case of chicken-and-egg.
I probably would have released "Take Cover" first. It's not a ballad, but
it is still catchy. Then I would have gone with "Wind." Oh well.

Brian: Decaf, man. Decaf! (hey, that goes for both DreamNDay and Mr.
    "Self-Indulgent") :)

Drums: What is a note, if not a pitch? Drums for sure can be tuned to a
note. Ever play a Timpani? Well, that's the limit of my musical knoeledge
of drums. :) Except: I hate the ACOS snare. I prefer the sound on I & W.
Yes, the never-changing loudness can be annoying, but the sound of an
individual note is good. I want to sample it (if I had a sampler) and use
it in my MIDI rig. At least then I could get velocity out of it.

Theatah: I'm much into theater (well, much more or less) -- A play I wrote
is going to be produced, assuming I can find a director. (I have until
    Tuesday! Yipes!)

And now we've got cross-postings from the Nirvana list and make momey fast.
Just when the Jam was getting good. Can't we make it so that
non-subscribers cannot post? And, what the heck could they be discussing on
the Nirvana list: "And today's top news story, Kurt Cobain is still dead."

Sigh. I guess I should get back to coding, writing, music-making, playing
Duke Nukem 3d or something like that. Oh yeah, I've determined that I'm
going to learn how to play OAMOT, and eventually make a MIDI file version
(not a true copy, but a similar version -- I'm going to have to simplify
Kev's solos, for one thing) Anyone know of a good MIDI file editor on the
PC? I need one that can handle complex music. My sequencer is good (not on
the PC anyways, on an Atari Falcon) but I want something to fine-tune the
MIDI file when I finish it.

Oh, and Duke Nukem rocks. Doom is dead. True 3d.

So, to all of you who want this CD, and have been putting it off,
order it, so we can all get it sooner. If you need more info, write to

Also, In Metropolis during the timbale part he keeps the hi-hat
constant while playing the timbales which is impossible; thus he
overdubbed that percussion track too. In Caught in a Web, a cowbell
and a vibra-slap are both overdubbed. And finally and more
drastically in A Change of Seasons he overdubs a tom fill over an
intricate beat that is definately impossible to do otherwise. (I'm
not sure of exact times..., I don't have my DT CD's at work)
Otherwise, he does some amazing drumming and we can overlook his
cheating...(and his use of purple Hot Sticks...<G>)

Actually, you are partially right... We drummers don't try to find
a particular note per se, but I for one like to tune my toms in
thirds...I tune the highest tom and then the second one a third below
that and so on. By the way Mike's snare sounds very much like a
Braun Popcorn Popper on A Change of Seasons if you haven't noticed...
one of the worst recorded snare sounds to date...<G>

Well, I have a 3x1/4" piccilo snare and the trick to make it sound
full instead of flimsy or "poppy" is to tune the head lower than you
would for a deeper snare. The combination of the shallowness of the
drum with the deeper tone of the head makes for a great snare drum
    sound....

    Hey everyone,
I read this on my dad's company BBS, and thought that you all should know
    about it.

    As confirmed by Microsoft Security:

A new trojan horse virus has emerged on the internet with the name PKZIP300.ZIP
, so named as to give the impression that this file is a new version of the
PKZIP software used to ZIP (compress) files. Do not download this file under
any circumstances! If you install or expand this file, the virus will wipe
your hard disk and affect modems at 14.4 and higher. This is an extremely
destructive virus and there is not yet a way of cleaning up this one.

Repeat: Do not download any file with the name PKZIP300, regardless of the
    extension.

    Be careful out there,
                  Scott Daugherty

    >No it doesn't. Thats an assumption. More fingers will not
    >give you better speed or allow you to be fast than a pick
    >player. I know you bring up David later on so I'll bring
    >him up now. If your saying, someone with 3 fingers can play
    >FASTER than a person like David Ellefson who uses a pick,
    >your insane...1)If you've ever listened to Rust In Peace,
    >you'll KNOW that Ellefson plays faster than any DT song
    >they have ever written and probably even harder to play. I
    >mean, listen to David's past work with deth, ESPECIALLY on
    >Killing is my business (as much as I hate that cd) a 3
    >fingered player would have to bust his/her ass to play that
    >speed. I don't want to be slamming bass players but there
    >are those that are better than others and alot of them to
    >me could run circles around JM. I'll name example if need
    >be.
    >

While it's true that Ellefson does play faster notes than Myung, Myung
changes notes more often, so Ellefson moves his right hand faster while
Myung cruises with his left. This pretty much epitomizes the two styles.
This is also why I play with my fingers (mostly 2, triplets 3)

    >-For an example of the difference
    >-between picking and fingerstyling bass check out David
    >-Ellefson's bass lines on Rust in Peace as compared to John
    >-Myungs bass lines onj Images and words; both lines are
    >-incredibly fast and complex but Myung sounds deeper and
    >-fuller
    >
    >Um, the reason for that is the amps there using and also
    >the way it was mixed, also, the type of pick that was used.
    >I wouldn't call I&W extremely fast either. Complexity is
    >about the only thing I&W is.
    >

Um, Ellefson used to play with his fingers but he switched to a pick to cut
out some of the boominess of the bass to complement the metal guitars.
Myung likes the bass boominess to complement the drums. A six-string bass
played with a pick sounds like a guitar, but played with the fingers is
unmistakably a bass. When I play with my fingers on my Vantage six string
through my Eden amp it can sound just as boomy as a Fender played through a
Peavy (actually more so). But when I play with a pick through my same Eden
withought changing the EQ, the sound varies remarkably: the bass drops out,
the highs are more shrill, and the string response is faster.

    >-while Ellefson has a quicker "kick" and cuts
    >-through the mix a little better due to the severity and
    >-timbre of his picking attack. Both are amazing bassists
    >-and are two of my favorites (I am a six-string bassist)
    >-and both have strongly influenced my playing.
    >
    >Kick? I assume you mean the sound when he hits his strings.
    >What you've been talking about is the sound thats coming
    >out of your amp dude. I sound like Steve harris 80% of the
    >time and I play with my fingers and thats because 90% of
    >the work from my bass amp and the other 10% is from my
    >fingers, not anything else.
    >

Nope, I meant the amount of time it takes for the primary overtone to decay
into the weaker sounding second overtone, fingerstyle has a longer, less
defined, less clear original "kick". This is why many fingerstly players
hate compressors, because a compressor makes the note sound almost like it
    was picked

I have some Overkill stuff, the only decent stuff is the Years of Decay and

Megadeth has been described in numerous magazine articles, numerous mail
order cataloques, and by the band themselves as progressive metal. It's
not progressive rock like Rush, but it is a progressive style. I have
already recieved a private email about old fates versus nre. All I have is
Inside Out and I saw them live with DT. They are OK, not great, but OK.
Maybe I will check out some of the John Arch stuff, I've heard it's MUCH
    better.

    I stand corrected! :-)
