Don't ask, it was on my Evolution exam, and I didn't know either.....
    1) Showing my ignorance:
What exactly is a soundboard (and keep it as non-technical as
possible or you'll see this question again next week)?

    2) To the guy expecting flames for calling I&W out-of-control, or
something like that: I&W is my all-time #1 favorite album, and I think
that sorta-out-of-controlness is a big part why....

    3) Next Album speculation: Need a bit of help here:
I am NOT expecting much out of this next album....would anyone care to
explain to me WHY that is? Because I really don't know. For some
reason, I'm extremely pessimistic about whether or not I'll 'really'
(whatever that means) enjoy the upcoming effort....it's not because I'm
worried about the DS effect (Sherinian), nor am I worried about
    commercialization....just an over-all low expectancy.....any help
    appreciated.

    4) "I just don't grok with all the political posing."--Cool, a
Heinlein reference....I started reading this guy because he had books
titled "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Starship Troopers".

Okay, after all the recent buzz (I heard about the new album on this list)
I went out and purchased "Hey Man," the new album by Mr. Big. I have to
agree that it goes between "Lean Into It" and "Bump Ahead." Less memorable
tunes a la "Green-Tinted Sixties Mind" or "Never Say Never," but a lot
more hard 'n heavy bluesy stuff than ever before. It's not furious like
the first, nor chugging like the second, nor drifting/ripping along like
the third, but stomping and tromping. (not to be confused with romping and
stomping, which is the first album)

Sidenote: I like the first album because it's a good album, not because it
features "Addicted To That Rush." There aren't any blistering freight-
train rhythms on the new album, but I still think it's much more cohesive
and booty-shakin' than, say, Bump Ahead.

    > It wish they'd go back to the "girl done me wrong", chunky, chops
    > filled, good-time songs of their debut release. It easily outpaces every
    > other release! LATER-

Me2. But I still like "Hey Man" because to me it seems like Mr. Big have
truly found their sound/selves. I can't imagine them playing any music
other than what's on this album. And I have to congratulate Eric Martin
for his vocal consistency. You listen to the first track from "Mr. Big"
("Addicted"), and the vocals sounds exactly the same as on the last track
    from "Hey Man."

As for the geetar-work, it's not really here. The solo to "Out Of The
Underground" is pretty cool. I just might attack it.

    > p.s Seeing Mr.Big in concert is a killer show. Being able to share a
    > vodka bottle with 'em after the show is even better. Ah...the days of
    > college gone by.

Not to mention a whirlwind guitar solo followed by a cerebrum-bustin' bass
solo. I don't care how cheesy "To Be With You" sounds to some people, I'd
pay $25 to see the Paul Gilbert/Billy Sheehan Show---I mean, to see a Mr.
    Big concert.

Maybe they realize that most of the time, unless you're an extremely open-minded person, someone outside of you can probably critique you most objectively. I can't review what I post here and call it "good" or "bad," and most musicians figure out that someone "else" is a better choice for harnessing all of the sounds of their work and putting it all together in a spectacular way. Want an example of a band who hasn't figured out how to balance their sound OR realize that an outside producer would be a good idea?

    SLAUGHTER.

    > do they have any plans to do so in the future?

I would venture to say probably not. Remember that it's also a lot more work for the band to do it all. But if DT ever gets their own studio, they just might...

That isn't what John Petrucci says. He switched guitars for the last song they played. What he says is, "I NEVER shoulda switched guitars." followed by "that's all I have to say" or some other out-of-breath thank-God-I- survived comment. And yeah, Portnoy says, "Got a light? Anyone got a light?" Kevin Moore shows off his animated side, too. Heck, the whole band shows off their animated sides.

Especially Charlie Dominici, who did his best to let the deaf people in the audience know exactly what he was singing. Clenched fists, arms raised, "Hold tight!" Feet out, point to spotlight, "Limelight!" If you ever find yourself laughing at what LaBrie does on stage, you obviously haven't seen Dominici. The LAST thing I'd do when singing a line like "Would you like to sit and talk to me?" would be sit down on the drumkit-stage and motion to the crowd.

---- > From: Elliott Kim <shredder@guitar.rules.com> > > BTW, I'm a guitar player [who wishes he had either stuck with piano > earlier in his life, or took up drums instead of guitar...]

No way man, not me. Too expensive, too much. The day you can pack a drumkit into a backpack and take it home for the weekend is the day I take up the drums. :)

someone mentioned steve digiorgio's work on bass with death. he was with death for the "human" and "individual thought patterns" albums. impressive stuff. his main band (which, from what i hear, he has since left), sadus, is definitely a band to check out if you want to hear some impressive bass work, especially the "a vision of misery" album. one of the few death metal bassists to use a fretless, and this man can pull sounds and textures out of a bass i never knew were possible (granted, i'm a synth player, but great, skilled musicians are great, skilled musicians nonetheless).

oh yeah . . . napalm death rocks! as i said once before, get driving music, good for running pedestrians down by. ;)

-Just because John Myung never played that fast in a song -doesn't mean he can't. I'd like to see Dave Ellefson (he's a -great bassist, believe me) or anybody try that really cool -Metropolis bass solo thing with a pick.

I wasn't goin after John M's speed in DT at all, this little piece came about due to the 3 fingers comments etc...I need to listen to Metrolopis again but you can play any guitar or bass part with or without a pick, if you say you can't, thats bull and your placing limits on the "ability" of that instrument and the player as well by saying that statement. Hell, with a little bit of practice, I could play that part with a pick and behind my back.

About the person who was talking about Overkill, asides from myself: I was commenting on the bass playing actually, Overkill's bassist is excellent. The music is also great, I only have wrecking your neck and I don't plan to get the other studio albums but I almost picked up the new one today, didn't have the cash tho. If anyone has it and digs it, let me know about it please. I also think Blitz has cool vocals. Has anyone ever seen them live?

This is part of the welcome message we all receive when we subscribe to the 'Jam:

    > Welcome to YTSEJAM, the Dream Theater mailing list! This list > is for fans of Dream Theater, and will discuss them and any > related topics. (Related topics include other progressive > metal bands like Fates Warning, King's X, Crimson Glory, > Inferno, etc.)

Lately, I've been seeing quite a few posts about Mr. Big and White Lion. I'm not going to get into the whole "(insert band here)" is prog thing, but I don't think either of the two aforementioned bands qualify. Don't get me wrong, I've discovered some good bands via the 'Jam, but they were _prog_. If you use the "JP uses a Paul Gilbert technique" argument, cite it (i.e. which DT song and where), like some people have, but don't argue about Mr. Big's songwriting abilities here. Someone mentioned Slaughter, and I don't want the 'Jam to degenerate to "Slaughter has x amount of

albums, not y amount". If that's not possible, how about incorporating content markers in the Subject fields again? For example, if you have a post about DT, you would put (DTC) after your Subject field. It would look something like this: Subject: Myung plays bass with his toes (DTC) If your post isn't about DT, it may look something like this: Subject: Weird dream about Nirvana, Poison, White Lion, Mr. Big, Winger, and Slaughter in ER (NDTC) I'm not trying to make enemies here, I'm just trying to make the 'Jam easier to read for those who aren't regulars: newbies, people who only want to read about DT, people who have to pay for Internet access, people who want to know about good prog music. No one wants moderation, and yet more and more people want the quality of the 'Jams to increase. This is a possible (and feasible) proposal. Comments? To quote Jim Beavens, "Differing opinions welcome, flames promtly ignored".

    Sincerely,

    G. Jack Thetgyi

I agree. The only one I don't own is the greatest hits, 'cause Vito speed-picking a single note at a live show for three minutes (or however long that mind-blowing example of stamina was when I heard it) isn't worth $12-16. Then again, bargain bins may have the disc for $4...

Yes sir, one of the keys to transcribing (or learning for that matter) fast guitar runs is the ability of the ear to hear the highest and lowest notes. Something about how our eyes retain the image of lightning even though it lasts 1/3000 of a second, our ears similarily "hold" that high note in a run of fourteen.

Take an upward rush of notes that instantly reverses direction without stopping, and I'll bet you can retain what that top note was if you listen. The lowest is the same way. It's the stuff in-between that makes me hate cd-players for their inability to pause immediately and re-play from the exact pause-point. (Paul Gilbert's 36th notes don't wait for anything. Speaking of which, I Attacked It. I'll bring the carcass when I'm done.)

It's just going to be louder. Whack a tuning fork > hard and you get whatever pitch it is. Just tap it and it's the same > pitch, just a lot softer. The same holds true for a drum head.

Actually, if you're playing a floating-tremolo guitar and you hit a string really hard, the pitch will go sharp for a second before levelling off. Dealing with this for extended periods of time creates a subconscious delicate touch among us trem-players that makes it very difficult to pick aggresively on locked-tremolo guitars. Or acoustics. (bleah!) Likewise, I wouldn't expect a strictly-acoustic guitar player to play with as much control or intricacy as someone like Joe Satriani.

Oh, and Steffen, the acoustic guitar is not the same thing as an electric guitar. They both have six strings and a neck, but please don't confuse skill on one with skill on another. I've never met Kevin Moore, but I'll bet I can type faster on this here keyboard than him, even though he plays keyboards for a living.
