Ill have to agree with Mr.Glenn Waterfield...I&W is a more "show off
every instrumenT" album than Awake.. i have a question..does that make
it more progressive than Awake? Well in I&W we have all those cool jams
with the keys and guitar simultaneously..,but still you being a bass
player must know that Awake contains lots of cool bass stuff..or course
all of this IMHO.. :)

Hey..what Metallica song did Dt do in the Birch Hill medley? Do they
cover other metallica songs?! Also i think DT's heaviest must be The
Mirror/Lie .. also PMU has a very heavy/fast part when James sings "Wath
the sparrows falling gives new meaning to it all" that part's pretty
heavy and mean. :)

Actually, an AOL mesg ID could be easily faked by using an AOL smtp
server to deliver the mail.
I send the headers to the postmaster at fidonet, which is where that
mirror service appears to be. The response I got back was that the
service is just as fake as the address.
I have asked Damon to bounce the add to me (he's in ack mode) if it
appears again, so I can track down the headers in the original. This
goes for anyone in ack mode: if that add appears again, bounce the
message to me. Make sure you bounce it and not forward it, bounce adds
your headers and keeps the others, but if you forward it, it deletes all
the original headers and replaces them with yours.

Just a quick note about the Ron. Scott show. I am not really familiar
with this, so I can't say one way or the other... Someone said that they
must have reworked it because you can't hear the audiance in PS. Well,
isn't it possible that that the boot of the show that's circulating is an
audience boot, and the one on ACoS is a soundboard recording? That could
account for the different sound. BTW, I have no idea if this is the
case, so feel free to correct me.

>Cold Sweat (by John Sykes, Phil Lynott)--anyone know where this song
>comes from?
*Warning - Minimal DT Content*
Cold Sweat was released first on Thin Lizzy's 1981 release _Thunder
and Lightning_. This was their last studio album before Phil Lynott
died of liver failure (hey, he was Irish, whattya expect!) in 1986. A
live version of "Cold Sweat" can be heard on a 1983 concert lp called
_Live/Life_
John Sykes had stepped in to fill the shoes of countless guitarists
that played with Thin Lizzy, including Gary Moore and Snowy White
(Pink Floyd tour guitarist in the 70's). This was a few years before
Sykes joined up with Whitesnake. _Thunder and Lightning_ as a whole is
pretty weak by today's standards....although I still like "The Sun
Goes Down" and "Angel of Death".
Thin Lizzy's music was mostly straight forward hard rock (no real
progressive stuff here...try Lynott's solo lp's for some cool time
changes on songs like "Talk in 79"). They were also pioneers in twin
lead guitar harmony (along w/ the Scorpions, of course).
I'd love to see what DT could do covering a song like "Jailbreak" or
"The Rocker". No "Boys are Back in Town", please!!
I went to see Primus in Dallas last Saturday. I wore my ytsejam
t-shirt, and had 4 different bassists (or wannabe's) come up to me and
tell me "Myung kicks ass/rocks/is a killer musician!". I heartily
agreed with theses facts. I just hope that whoever ends up doing
production for DT on their new CD can keep John M. up in the mix.
Certain parts of Awake and ACOS make my skin prickle from the bass
lines.
Sorry for the lack of DT content...the T'in Lizzy question got my
psyched...cuz I actually was able to put this aging brain to work.
Do you think that the average age for progressive music is generally
higher than for, say, Green Day?!! I'm 31, and was raised on Kansas,
Styx, Rush, and Yes (among others). Dream Theater fits my natural
tendencie to lean towards this type of music. What about the kids who
grew up with Wang Chung and the glam bands of the 80's...it's no
wonder they are listening to shit like Oasis.
Off my soapbox for now.
Tom Baddley
This song is about peace and love, and good happiness stuff.

Hiya,
>As for Ms. Morset or however you spell it, I think she's a bitter hating

Have you heard her song "Head Over Feet"? It is one of the most beautiful
love songs I have ever heard. That songs happens to my my girlfriends and
my song, and neither one of us are alternative fans. I have her CD and I
really like it a lot. It seems to me that she picks one EMOTION as the
focus of each song and runs with it. Her songs and lyrics are VERY
emotive. She is simply trying to communicate her feelings through her
voice and words. I do agree that the musicianship is second rate, but that
is alright because the lyrics are the main focus of the song anyway (don't
judge her from "hand in my pocket", that is the absolute worst song on the
album). I am hard pressed to find anotherband/vocalist/songwriter who can
convey an exact feeling with such clarity as Ms. Morrisette. I don't think
she is a bitter person because "Head oVer Feet is a song about finding true
love and it being the best thing that could ever happen to a person (I
agree). Listen to this song before you judge her as a hateful person (she
is less hateful than Tori Amos by light years)
Cheers!

You know you're a fan of diverse music if you listen to Scared by The
Tragically Hip followed by Scarred by Dream Theater, and enjoy all of it!
Any lyric-writers out there? Sometimes if I have a great idea for a song
I start to write down a few lines and then blank out. Once, though, I
actually wrote a complete song, but after a few weeks I went back to it to
read what I had written and laughed out loud at the corniness of the
lyrics. Does anyone have any pointers on how they write their own lyrics,
'cause I feel like I have some great ideas that I just don't know how to
get across, it can be frustrating....
Babs, the Spirit of Radio cover you heard on 102.1 was by Catherine Wheel,
and it's NOT going to be one of the tracks on the Rush tribute CD. It's
going to appear on a compilation put out by the radio station, called
"Spirit Of The Edge, vol. 2"
I realize I'm way behind everybody else on this, but better late than never,
right? I'm thinking about getting some echolyn CDs. I just don't want to
plunk down any cash before hearing it first. Can anyone point me to some
good echolyn sound files on the net? I found a whole bunch of AIFF files
(on the Sony site I think) but my computer can't play those. So please,
someone tell me where I can get WAV, AU, VOC, or MP2 files. Or for that
matter, a program to convert to one of those from AIFF....thanks.
A request to no one in particular: whenever you post to the jam, why
don't you do us all a favour and READ OVER your message before you send it.
It's very easy to do and should take care of a lot of typos. And yes, I
realize that not everyone on the jam speaks english as their first language.
Everyone go check out Spookey Ruben at
http://www.tvtrecords.com/bands/spookey.html
This guy is an eccentric creative genius! The music could be considered
progressive I guess, there's some complex stuff going on in most of the
songs. He decribes his own musical style as Massive Wobbly Sound.

> I'm a drummer but i'm really into guitar focused albums, some artists are:
>
> Joe Satriani
_Surfing with the Alien_ is a classic rock/metal instrumental. All the
songs have catchy tunes and great solos...he uses the wah-wah pedal and
whammy bar to the extreme.
> Tony Macalpine
Great neo-classical guitarist. Try _Premonition_ or his latest
_Evolotion_. Overall, Tony has above average songwriting...some of his
songs are excellent like "The Violin Song" off _Premonition_ and "Sage"
off the latest. His has also a lot of short piano pieces inspired by
Bach.
> David T. Chastain
Never heard of him.
> Greg Howe
Every guitar freak should bow down to Greg Howe, in my dogmatic opinion.
Greg Howe exhibits the widest range of techiniqes of any guitarist that I
have heard...and he's FAST. Try out _Uncertain Terms_. I heard bits of
his latest _Parallax_ and its good too.
> Marc Bonilla
Marc is good guitarist...his first album (name escapes me) had some great
songs, but the most part of the album lacked catchy tunes. His latest
_American Matador_ is a improvement, IMHO.
> Gary Hoey
I would vote Gary Hoey for the coolest guitar player. Hoey is not the
fastest, or the most technically proficent guitar player, but he puts out
some great tunes. He has wides ranges of style in his albums--metal,
country, jazz, blues, mellow stuff. I like his choice of guitar tones.
_Animal Instinct_ (my album of choice)
"Mass Hysteria" Straight ahead metal with lots of energy.
"Hocus Pocus" Hard rock tribute to the 70's band Focus.
"Texas Son" Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughn
_Endless Summer II_
"Low Rider" Hard rock remake of some band (?)
"Linus and Lucy" Hard-rock version of the Charlie Brown theme song
"Surfdoggin'" Cool, cool country song. If country music was this good,
I would be listening to it.
_Ho! Ho! Hoey_ Christmas Album
"Twelve Days of Christmas" Metal version
"Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer" Bluesy version
"Jingle Bells" Country version
"O Come all ye Faithful" Acoustic version
"Auld Lang Syne" Alternative version Guitar sounds like RHCP "Under the
Bridge"
> Blues Saranceno
Blues has a lots of cool tunes...he has some neat vibrato techniques that
gives him a unique sound. I like his latest _Hair Pick_.
other great guitarists...
Stuart Hamm well, he's a bass player but he plays his bass like a guitar.
Check out "Quahogs Anyone" off _The Urge_.
Richie Kotzen His latest _Inner Galactic Fusion Experience_ is amazing.
It's jazz/rock fusion with unorthodox playing.
Greg Howe/Richie Kotzen Two guitar gods team up on the album _Tilt_.
I haven't heard it yet--my friend snagged it out
of my hand at a record store.
Scott Henderson I have _Dog Party_ which has some great
country/jazz/blues hybrid playing. The rest of the album
has standard blues songs. _Illicit_ is rock/jazz fusion
and I like it a lot. Scott is underrated, IMO.
I'm sure there is lots more out there, but all these are the ones the
best. I would like to hear some recommendation for some of the jammers.
Walter.

>Cold Sweat (by John Sykes, Phil Lynott)--anyone know where this song comes
from?
John & Phil were in Thin Lizzy (check out the CD "Jailbreak" for an intro to
T.L; still sounds fresh after 20 years).
>The other cover was something like Coming To My Home by I think Mark Farmer. I
didn't recognize the name, but I did recognize the song. It is a song from the
70's.
Mark was (is) the singer for Grand Funk Railroad (c'mon, remember "We're An

>Beatles: I think they suck. I certainly wouldn't bother buying any of their
albums. I do agree with that one guy (don't remember your name, sorry) who said
they should be credited with inventing a lot of shit
(stuff about guitar chords or whatever, I'm not a guitarist). So, I give them
that much, but not much more.
Tell ya what, I'm not a Beatles fan either, but if you were able to transport
yourself back to circa 1963 and listen to the music that was played on the radio
during the early 60's, you would see why they were so different (and popular) at
that time. Personally, I'll take the Stones/Who anytime over the Fab Four.
And now for something completely different.......It's....[add Flying Circus
theme here].

Oops, forgot about them. :) Allow me to rephrase: The Beatles were the first rock and roll band. A real partnership, not a guy with a backup band. In this sense, they were the first Rock and Roll Band. Also, however, I think that the Beatles are sufficiently different in that either 1: They had separated off from R&B and were doing something different, or 2: They were British white guys playing R&B. (I can't really tell which one is true, however. :)
