Hey There.
Twenty tracks? Two cds? Has everyone but me decided to ignore the idea
that DT might tour after releasing new material? Even if a whole show was
dedicated to the new discs, DT couldn't play every track unless the show
itself was two and a half hours long. As far as live shows go, twenty new
songs is A LOT of stuff to work in. You can basically kiss ACOS, Learning
To Live, Metropolis, Scarred, and Voices goodbye, unless DT feels generous
during an encore...
Still confused about Nuggetman's "circle of fifths" .sig? Head to this
site:
http://pacificnet.net/~jravich/guitar/music.html
It's not a complete lesson, but you might get a clearer picture.
I doubt the aol spams are from America Online. There's so much animosity
directed towards aol from the entire online community, it wouldn't
surprise me if someone is masking a spam-source with "aol.com." It's an
easy target to get people upset with because aol already has so many
dissatisfied customers. Or so I've heard.
Derek in the cold signing autographs while others stay in the van? That's
exactly what he did for me after the Birch Hell show. And yeah, he looks
chilly in this picture. (I didn't send this one, D-Man)
Raise your hand if you're going to buy a Sega Saturn just so you can hear
Petrucci's soundtrack to "Necronomicon." :)
Alanis Morissette has had three albums. The first two aren't available,
and no I don't own them. As for my opinion of Alanis' music, I saw the
video for "You Oughta Know" twice last summer in Ocean City, Maryland.
When I got back to Seattle I bought the album because I liked how the band
sounded (little did I know Flea only did the bass on that one track) and I
could hear a lot of expressiveness in her voice that (I gambled) carried
through the entire album.
I wasn't disappointed with "Jagged" at all, I still listen to it from time
to time, but what really attracted me to her sound was the agression
combined with simple melodic control in her voice. There aren't enough
female rock singers in publicly-available music for my tastes.
I didn't say opera. I didn't say raspy, no-melody screaming. I didn't say
whispery, weak, crying, lazily off-key vocals.
I said rock.
It helps to know what you like, auditorily, because you can hear a song
twice and instantly know you'll like the other songs on the album, none of
which you've heard at the time of purchase.
A bunch of people have been mentioning guitar albums, wanting reviews,
wanting advice on who to look for, who's hot, who's not, etc. I have a few
lying around, so I figure I'll talk about them. Just a little. As a
service to others, of course, as a giving human being, a benevolent,
understanding soul like that nice Q.
Bafu Vai
p.s. Graham Borland is neat. I like Graham. :)

Yes, it rule, in fact it's favorite Superior song, but my computer has to

Okay, I've been reading the admittance of individuals that like
"alternative" music. I've found that althought I enjoy listening to some of
the music, it's not all what it's cracked up to be. Alanis did not write
'Ironic' just like Oasis did not write 'Wonder Wall.' In fact, I've found
that a lot of "alternative" artist redo songs from the early age of
rock-n-roll under their own name. This is my greatist dissapointment. I
love music, but not when it's a "Lie." Please, don't mistake me for
flamin' the musicians; I'm just stating fact.

<< To me this makes so much sense. Sorry if you don't like
Queensryche. I could have written alot more but a) people probably don't
care, and b) I don't have the lyrics with me.
Then again, this is coming from the same person who thinks "The Mirror" is
about a drug dealer!! (And I can defend that!)
>>
Well, I certainly care about someone's opinion on Queensryche. (That is,
unless you are mindcrimer@aol.com, who is so unbelievably ignorant that he
thinks no DT song has relevant lyrics.) I don't think The Warning is so much
a concept album as it is an album with a common theme. I think that all of
Queensryche's albums have a general theme (with the exception of the EP and
Empire). Obviously, O:M isn't an album with a theme, but a concept. I think
the whole concept album concept deals with all of the songs contributing
either lyrically or musically to a story. I don't think that The Warning,
RFO, or PL do that. They just have a general theme(s). IMO, The Warning's
theme is the takeover of technology. QR is giving us "The Warning". If you
saw the list of concept albums others have mentioned recently, take a look at
the lyrics from those albums. They solidly tie into a story. They share
more than a theme.
As for "The Mirror", IMHO, I believe that the lyrics are about someone
looking at his or her reflection in the mirror. Some feel that it deals with
losing trust in a signficant other, but, as suggested by the title, couldn't
that significant other be yourself? Sometimes, you have to look in the
mirror to realize how much you've fucked up. (Pardon my French, but you lose
emphasis when you say, "...you've done some really, really bad things.) The
"you" in this song is the person who is reflected by the mirror. The person
is speaking to his reflection.

Is it the la-la aspect of their music? I can understand that, but that
stuff's deeply engrained in my DNA from listening to it when I was a kid.

Been a little talk about concept albums on the jam again as of late. Of
course, Queensryche's 'Operation: MindCrime' got mentioned, as well it
should for being a brilliant concept album not to mention just one of the
most kick-ass albums of all time. (IMHO, of course) Then there is the
debate over whether Promised Land is a concept album, or whether Rage for
Order or Warning were concept albums.
Well, here's a point I don't think I've seen anyone bring up yet... I
admit it's a little bit shallow, but try this little exercise:
Take the names of all of Queensryche's albums in chronological order and
see what you come up with...
Queen of the Reich (Queensryche EP), The Warning, Rage for Order,
Operation: Mindcrime, Empire, Promised Land.
We have a queen coming to power, a warning issued to all around, the
beginnings of a campaign, revolution, conquer, and finally peace and
tranquility after arriving at our goal.
It's a concept _band_ in that every album they release adds one more
piece to the puzzle. :)
Okay, I'm stretching things, but *I* thought it was cool... *hehe*

On the Alanis thing; poppy songs which are VERY addictive!
I despised her at first, but after hearing and buying the album,
not bad!!
-On Mike Bahr; why don't we just set up the BahrJam, I'm
impressed!! A lot of work does pay off (he's not paying me to
say this or anything)
-On Saigon Kick; WONDERFUL BAND!! Great live show, and
terribly humble gentlemen

Take care all, and have a great summer if I fall out of
touch (I'm usually waiting in the wings anyway)

When you think about it, ACOS isn't really a 'live' album. They just needed
something to fill up space, and I guess they thought they would just touch
'em up and put 'em on there. As far as we know the real live album LatM and
LiT weren't touched up. Besides that, they might have been pressured by the
record company to do it. Think about it. They realeased a 23 min song in
response to a small group of rabid fans. Since DT is still a 'baby band' in
EW's eyes they probably thought that putting covers would be a good way to
attract new fans... and if you want to attract fans, the covers should be
well done, dontcha think (nobody wants medium rare covers :) Especially if
the only original song on the CD is so darn long...
Besides that...as far as I've noticed, only KJL and JP are the ones who
touched up their parts... they're also the ones who don't like boots...hmmmm
>Beatles: I think they suck.
OK, that's fine and dandy, but next time try saying it in a more eloquent
manner. That's the kinda stuff that starts the annoying flames...

Which DT song is heaviest you ask. What is the definition of

One large thing about Alanis and then I hope she drops along

Hey, y'all -
Well, my modem crapped out on me again and my latest retrieval of E-mail
resulted in about 1,836 Jams - all of which I deleted, except for the
latest one (#1497), so I have no idea what's going on - therefore, very
little DT content - my sincere apologies.
The Jam (as far as I know) hasn't had the pleasure of participating in a
survey for quite a while - so, if you don't mind, I'd like to conduct one
for my own personal interest and maybe yours, too...
Item #1: Who do you prefer? Dane Sonnier or Wally Farkas? (Galactic
Cowboys)
My response/opinion: Farkas is to Sonnier what Vai was to Satriani - the
student/understudy turned master. Farkas
Item #2: Favorite Galactic Cowboys album: Galactic Cowboys, Space In Your
Face, or Machine Fish?
My response/opinion: GC made quite an improvement when they were dumped by
Geffen - Geffen or not, Alan Doss did an excellent job producing Machine
Fish, and I think it's, by far, the best sounding and best produced album.
Granted, I'm not quite as familiar with the first two, but, from what I've
heard of them (and they are great, also) Machine Fish takes it for me. MF
Item #3: To those of you who caught Sepultura opening for Ozzy in recent
months: Did you dig them? Or did they just SUCK?!?
My response/OPINION!!!: I have never suffered like that through the
duration of an opening band's show...and I've seen Trixter. It was almost
painful - heck, ditch the 'almost' - it was downright painful! And, I
wasn't the only one. About halfway through their set, the audience
(Phoenix-April 13th) started chanting "Ozzy! Ozzy! Ozzy!" I've NEVER heard
that before.
("Bloody 'orrible!" - Eric Idle, Monty Python). SUCKED!
Item #4: Being a drummer, this one is of particular interest to me - and to
a lot of you, judging by past Jams: Portnoy's drum sound - which do you
prefer? WDADU, IAW, Awake, or ACOS?
My response/opinion: For myself, I would choose the ACOS sound. For DT,
however, I think the sound utilized in the recording of IAW best fits DT's
music. But, who am I to criticize arguably the world's greatest drummer?
IAW
Item #5: Finally, who is your favorite? Portnoy or Peart?
My response/opinion: I tend to prefer Portnoy, but maybe that's because I
prefer DT over Rush, but not by a whole lot. I would love to see those guys
engage in a drum duel, if they tour together - that would almost be too
much for any drummer to stand.
I'd also like for those interested to send me a list of their 10 favorite
bands (go ahead and include DT, but, I think we all know who will come out
on top).
My response/opinion: (In no particular order) DT, King's X, Van Halen,
Rush, GC, Queensryche, Extreme, Saigon Kick, Mr. Big, and Yes.
Send entries to: syoung@primenet.com with 'Re: Survey' in the Subject.
I'll be accepting entries until May 31, at 11:59 pm. Then, I'll tally the
votes and try to post the results on June 1 (my wife's birthday).
DT's new disc due out in October? Did I hear right?
Has anybody heard the CD Burnin' For Buddy (a Buddy Rich tribute CD that
features Peart)?
What's happening with the DT watches?
Thanks for your participation and refrain from flaming - wow, say THAT ten
