     Hi there, 'Jammers,

I've got the DT CD bootleg "Skyway of Nightmares" for sale. It's an OK
quality recording off the I&W tour from Germany (Augsburg Rockfabrik). It's
over 70 minutes long. If you're interested, please mail me privately with a
bid. I'll accept bids from US$ 25 (including postage), but if there are
multiple bids I'll pick the one that's highest.

Let me begin by saying I like players who shred. Let me end by saying I
like players who shred. Got it? Okay...

Now I'm gonna list four of my favorite guitar albums with no description
whatsoever for those of you going, "Yeah, I have all this money, and I
want to buy some guitar music, but don't know what to get! Help me Bafu
Vai Kenobi, you're my only hope!"

    1. Joe Satriani, "Surfing With The Alien." (1987)
    2. Steve Vai, "Passion & Warfare." (1990)
    3. Blues Saraceno, "Plaid" (1992)
    4. Gary Hoey, "Animal Instinct." (1993)

Those first two albums were on the Fucking Sellout Records label. Some of
you might know of this label by its other name, "Relativity Records."

Now I'm gonna talk. In detail. Big descriptions. Wild adjectives the likes
of which you've never seen. Please secure all loose articles, such as
hats, wallets, children, guitar picks, limbs progressing through the later
stages of leprosy, and random aol.com spams. There is no DT content here,
but I heard that John Petrucci plays the guitar, so this is as a related
    topic.

Jennifer Batten, "Above Below & Beyond." (1992) Featuring a faster-
than-it-should-be-played excruciatingly-precise version of "Flight Of The
Bumblebee." If guitarists married based on similar technique, this woman
would marry Reb Beach. Her style is straight-ahead agressive, and not once
on this album will you hear a wah-wah pedal. Speaking of pedals, she was
the first guitarist I can think of to make serious use of the Whammy
pedal. We're talking tapping frenzies on Pluto, folks. Produced by Michael
Sembello ("she's a maaaaniac, maaaaaniac"), this album is also drum-heavy
with some truly thumping double-bass work.

Yngwie Malmsteen, "Fire & Ice." (1992) Clearer production and tighter
compositions than anything done before this album. Meaning, I advise you
to get this one and don't bother with anything done before it. :) Pinnacle
of his neo-classical guitarwork, spectacular vocals on par with LaBrie.
His last grand-production, big-orchestration album done before "Seventh
Sign," the beginning of his move to the heavier side. Yngwie continues
this heaviness further on "Magnum Opus" (immediately following SS), which
I haven't heard but am told is "fuckin' heavy as shit!"

(For those of you completely unfamiliar with the term "neoclassical," it
means this music is like Beethoven with crunchy electric guitars, whirly
squirrly basses, thunderous drums, heavy synth-layering and accompaniment,
and an opera-like vocalist. Occasionally it even features (gulp!) actual
classical instruments like cellos and violins...)

Dweezil Zappa, "Confessions." (1991) Boy is he underrated. This album
features writing, production, mixing, backup vocals, and guitarwork by
Nuno Bettencourt. Also a cover of "Staying Alive" with Donny Osmond on
vocals, guitar solos by Zakk Wylde, Dweezil Zappa, Steve Lukather, Warren
DeMartini, Nuno Bettencourt, and Tim Pierce, with rhythm guitar by Mike
Keneally. Hell of a lineup... If you can get past the "Earth Day" slant to
much of Dweezil's writing, this is a fun album full of humor and
incredible guitarwork. The sweet little opening neo-classical (now you
know what it means!) piece is in a major key, so you won't get any Yngwie
    nightmares.

Vinnie Moore, "Meltdown." (1991, Fucking Sellout Records) This fellow is
in the Neoclassical Club, right alongside Malmsteen and MacAlpine. This
album is a bit heavier than most instrumental guitar albums I've heard,
because unlike most guitar soloists, Moore accentuates the chunky rhythm
guitars throughout the entire album right along with the leads, which
makes it a powerful effort overall. He likes arpeggios, and uses them
constantly to create a sparkling spring of notes. Like Tinkerbell dancing
across the fretboard. Featuring Joe Franco on drums, one of the better
studio drummers in the instrumental guitar biz. (Vinnie's new album, "Out
Of Nowhere," is out on Mayhem Records, not Fucking Sellout Records.)

Gary Hoey, "Animal Instinct." (1993) As someone mentioned before, not a
stellar speedhead nor a whammy-bar addict, but one of the most tasteful
guitarists around. He goes from blues to jazz to country slide to metal to
neoclassical to bebop...wait, he doesn't do neoclassical. :) This album
has more variety than any of the four I mentioned above. Hoey is one of
those players with seemingly endless creativity, and WITHOUT the usual
thousand-licks-up-my-sleeve formula. He's a virtuoso not because of
tremendous technical flash but because he plays in so many styles on this
single album, which if you think about it is what a virtuoso should be. He
even does an acoustic track, "Jamie," dedicated to his baby daughter, who
does a few guest vocals (gurglings?) here and there.

(And if Reb Beach and Vito Bratta ever get their slated-for-1993 solo
albums released, I'll send you a review first thing in the morning, if my
fingers have the strength left to type...)

Yeah, that's all. Want me to do more, e-mail me. You might have to
special-order Batten and Zappa since they aren't quite as well-known as
the other ones. CdNow probably has all of them. And with that in mind,
this post will probably be the first on the next digest, since really long
posts often get bumped as opposed to automatically making End-Of-Jam. Thus
the prediction stands that this post will not be at the end of the next
    digest...

    Bafu Vai

p.s. yes, Scotch, some of this was lifted from the review I sent you. :)

Hi everyone! A friend of mine is hard up for cash and he has no
net access, so I'm relaying this for him. He wants to sell his Dream
Theater "Acoustic Dreams" CD #003 (he is one of the people who helps to
do the mailing and such, so he usually gets to grab one of the first
ones). This CD is a real prize... we're talking number THREE of 500. The
downside is that he believes he can sell this piece for $100 US. I have
my doubts, but the persistence and devotion of DT fans never ceases to
amaze me, so it just might happen. If you missed out on Acoustic Dreams,
this may not be the ideal way for you to get one, but it IS available,
and you might not get another chance for quite awhile. The masters have
been recycled and I've been refunded my deposit so I cannot make more. If
you decide that $100 is not worth it but you're willing to buy for less,
let me know what your offer is and I'll pass it on to Justin. You'll be
making your check/MO out to Justin Poulter.

(cut him some slack.. he's unemployed. :)

Oh yes, he's also selling his copy of Rush "Cygnus", but since he
knows there are still a handful available at regular price, his asking
price is the original $25 for that one.

    Hello 'jamanoids.

Got some things floating around...last Friday I was to see
Bruce Dickinson and Helloween. I had my LIE longsleeve on me
and about every ten minutes someone comes to me and starts
raving about DT. My girlfriend was totally dumbfounded, as she
has been very annoyed with my fanaticism about everything that
concerns DT. She was like "It seems there's more of you
messed-up sonsabitches!" and I responded w/ a very wide conceited
     grin....

I got a VHS copy of DT at Warfield, San Fransisco sometime
back in 1993. It was audience-shot, but the guy evidently
was a major fan, since he did all the zoomings and close-ups
according to the songs. The image quality wasn't the best
possible, but it was cool. The best parts of it were Eve and
Status Seeker. Not that they're the best songs, but they
are those DT doesn't play on every gig.

For the ones who care, Blind Guardian has just released a new
CD called "The Forgotten Tales". It has some of their earlier
stuff as orchestrated versions and some pretty hilarious stuff
including a killer rendition of "Surfin' USA."!

For everyone who likes Gamma Ray, Helloween and Angra, check
out Stratovarius. You definitely won't regret it. Believe me.

Can someone verify me if DT ever played "The Trooper" by Iron
Maiden? I can't grasp where the hell I've got this impression
from, but it's slowly starting to irritate me. Please?

Skadz, big thank you for the acct.

Spam mailers: Let me get to them, let me get to them! Please?
at least unlock the cage, will you...and what are going to go
     with that syringe....

Kill my RESPONSE mailer too. There's actually a chance I
invented a way to get rid of the mail item format warnings.
We'll see in a few weeks.

the biggest and best piece of advice i can give to you is NEVER EVER
THROUGH ANYTHING AWAY! what may seem corny now, you may like later. even
if you end up never liking the piece, you may be able to rewrite, rework
it, or be inspired by it to create something different.

usually when i write it's on the spur of the moment. i've never sat down
and thought "hey, i'm gonna write a song". always keep a notepad and pen
with you at all times. you never know when inspiration might hit. and
write down everything that comes to mind. just getting the ideas down on
paper is the hardest part. you can go back and rework things later.

well, that's my 0.02 of advice. anyone else??

oh, and my 0.02 on the Alanis thing. she is a pre-packaged, paid in
advance pop star. her entire career, as i understand it, was shaped and
molded by Maverick (?) records so that it could reap the most materialistic
financial rewards possible for the time in which it was released. (not
that that's anything different these days) while i respect her talent, i
feel her entire sound is the result of a factory-line approach to the
music. know what i mean? it just sounds TOO packaged.

i recall a number jams back, someone mentioning a web page dedicated to bad
traders. well, if someone could give me the location of it, i've got an
addition for it. this dipsh*t has owed me a video for over two months.
(don't worry, he's not a jammer). the worst part about it is that i work
with him. i told him yesterday about the bad traders web site, and that i
believed the minimum time that had to go by before a person's name could be
added to the site was 2 months, and he just gave me a cocky smile and said
    "well, i guess i'm a bad trader".

to be completely honest, and i hate to admit this, if i didn't work with
him, i'd just kick his ass with the hopes of deterring him from pulling
this shit with anyone else. if it didn't change his outlook, it would sure
change the appearance of his face. but alas, i need my job so perhaps the
bad traders page is the more appropriate action to take.

sorry for venting at you all. if someone can give me that address, i'd
    appreciate it.

Relating to the QR debate and the fact that some believe them to be
boring, unimaginative etc when they play the note for note versions
live, didn't people go to see them because of that album version in
the first instance and not just to see them improvise.
I say QR last year in Sheffield, England and was blown away by the
quality of the show. I was thoroughly happy with their performance
and didn't feel let down due to a lack of originality live.
Anyway, transferring this idea to other people, I think most of us
agree that Joe Satriani is an amazing guitarist, and some of the
stuff on albums like The Extremist and Time Machine, sounds almost
impossible to recreate live. Does anyone object to him playing almost
note for note to prove his ability, or do they prefer improvisation,
which he also does anyway on some songs.
A couple of months ago I saw Satch and while there seemed I slight
lack of originality and impro, just hearing him recreate the album
    versions was an amazing experience.
Just thought I'd let you know my thoughts in that I believe excess
deviation from the true form covers a multitude of sins and lack of
    true ability

Excuse me for butting in (I have read the last few posts but have
only posted once so far), but I am a little confused about some of
the comments about ACOS. Someone (don't know who) seemed to be
complaining that it is a live recording with overdubs. If this is
not what was intended, my sincerest apologies. I was under the
impression that ACOS is a wholly studio recording. The liner notes
do say that it was recorded at Bear Tracks Studio. Did I just
misunderstand the initial post? Flame me if I'm wrong, but please
try to be nice about it.

Aha! Finally an answer - thank you. I have been trying and trying to get a hold of that station with no luck (I have a feeling that Canada has been hit with a lot of the crap that we have on the other side of the border where these radio stations are owned by one major corp. and then are parceled out to the public). Can anyone explain this to me? We have three radio stations in Rochester that have a little blurb about how they are an American Systems Radio Station - what the hell does that mean?

A friend of mine just acquired "Black Rose" an old Thin Lizzy album that was digitally remastered and re-released in Germany last year. He said that it sounds pretty good!

    Hi there!

This is Gabor Balla of After. All from Hungary. Beside I am a great DReam Theater, Fates Warning, Rush and Queensryche fan I have a band called After.All. We play such music as the bands above but it is not the copy of the songs. In Hungary a band must play songs from other bands because next time the band will have no people to play music. So thats why we play from the followings:

Dream Theater:Pull Me Under Surrounded The Silent Man Rush:Stick It out

By the way this yesterday we finished our first Demo Casette. The title of that is Before Daybreak. The songs: Too Many Pieces Latido del Corazon,Part 2. - Heartbeat Has Become My Life Daybreak ... ... In Beyrouth

We will be on internet pages from the near future.

OK< hi everybody and send emails if you want tto speak with me about DT, etc.

Ok people, as the IRCers now know I saw Tori Amos last night in concert, and I feel that it is more than nessacery to share the show here. Well first the opener sucked, like every other show he made should to inculde Phil-ah-del-phi-A or THE MIGHTY TORI, just so the crowd would react. But anyway, who wants to talk about that guy. Tori kicked some major ass. The crowd left a little to be desired from the Under the Pink tour though, every 14 year old girl just made sure to scream out at the wrong time, it's like not like they were into the music but they just wanted to here themselves. During "Silent all these years" Tori commented on someone who shouted "I love you Tori" with "Ok great, I love you too, Can I just finish this song?". Tori can really handle a crowd I have to hand it to her. And of course for you horny guys, as I stated on IRC, Tori did play with her breasts at the show, I'd rather not really go into, rather give you the setlist or something, I'll leave with this though, GO SEE TORI, this could be your last chance, the crowd just gets less and less bareable. Later andy

In no particluar order (I can remeber stuff like that)

Silent All These Years Precious Things Happy Phantom Tear in Your Hand Me and A Gun Baker Baker Cornflake Girl Beauty Queen Horses Blood Roses Caught a Lite Sneeze Hey Jupiter Little Amsterdam Talula (chasing tornados mix) ---> questions on that e-mail me Doughnut Song In The Springtime of His Voodoo Putting The Damage On A Case of You Take to the Sky

That's basicly the set, I might have missed one odd song, she might have played Past the Mission. I don't know, whatever. Note this set will change all four nights here in Philly, only about 5 songs will stay the same over all the nights.

    later, again, andy

Andrew Miller Real people get mail from my other account, andym@dreamt.org only there will you see the true signatures --or-- of Andy Miller. Thanks go out to Ryan, for ytsejam@Udel.Edu without him this .sig would not be possible.
