Heya...Long time no read. Time to open my mind again....err mouth
of course =P
1. DT's heaviest song. Well...IMO heavy is entirely in the ear
of the listener. I came up with 3 sounds that most people connect.
with heavy: Raw, Fast and Dark. Of course I might be bs'ing but 'tis
just something I came up. So basically some people hold that the
raw stuff is heavier that fast etc.. etc..not going to argue
for or against any of these. I think that more of any or all of the-
are on the song the heavier it is =) Sooo...My vote goes to 'The
Mirror'
2. Double cd thingy. Errr...I dunno if I'm all on top of this since
I've skipped a couple of 'jams lately (don't kill me =). But
if ...remember *IF*... this is true and JP himself asked for it
I'm there right now ! And someone was concerned if this creates a
monster..IMO not. If they have the songs ready the input of us
'jammers is only for the record company for allowing it to be.
We all listen to the type of music that sometimes NEEDS the lenght
to come thru. And the dudes are so great musicians that I defini-
tely don't think any fill-up's are forthcoming or problems with
quantity vs. quality =) ....20 songs...that MIGHT blow my mind tho =P
3. Umm my last post never got through but if it did disregard this.
Anyways what I wanted to say that it's cool to have some real lite-
rate talents here like Paul W. Cashman. I have Tales From the White
Wolf and I know how hard it actually is to create a good cohesive
story. You rock =) ...Now somebody tell Iain Banks to stop lurking
and post I'm happy =)
DISCLAIMER: On the last point I never in any way tried to put down
our own talents in the 'jam. Bafu and the rest....keep on
posting ;)
Ack...was that too much ? Anyways take care y'all!

I believe that John Sykes and Phil Lynott were in a band called Hawkmoon.
I think this same band also included Gary Moore at one time. It's a
seventies band.

I know what you mean, me being a student I had the same thing last year
when I was in halls. I thought the problem would go away when I moved into
a flat with another 4 students. Well it did to the extent that nobody
listens to Britpop.. Now I get either Iggy Pop, Frank Sinatra, Eric Clapton
or soppy love shite! :-)
Seriously though, I can put up with Oasis. IMO Noel Gallagher is a good
songwriter, yes we've all heard similar songs before but they're catchy and
easy to listen to, which I think accounts for their success. As for other
Britpop stuff such as Pulp, well the less said the better really!!

Is that not because this part of Erotomania is the same as that part of
TSM? I know music from TSM is in Erotomania, but I can't remember where
exactly. I think this will probably be that bit.

Also I worked out the intro fill to 6:00 last night. I sampled it then
slowed it down by 2 octaves to work it out. I think this is what it is..

t1>t5 = octoban 1>5 (I think he only has 4 but there's definitely 5 different

bd = bass drum(s)
r/l = right/left foot (up to you if you use this or not, it just means the crash
R/L = right/left hand (after the fill is with your right hand. more natural.)

Hi all
some of you will have heard of Vanden Plas by now, but even if you haven't, go
out and get a listen of their album "Colour Temple", or even better, go and see
them live if you happen to live in France or Germany.
I caught them live in Wiesbaden, Germany on Tuesday night. It was the third time
that I had seen them. The first two gigs were great, and I was wondering if
their live show was really as good as I thought it was. I was not disappointed,
in fact, I was nearly blown out of my boots. You could really tell just how much
fun these guys were having up on the stage, something that I sadly missed the
two times that I saw Dream Theater. Excellent music, fantastic sound, amazing
musicians. They played two new tracks (The Rain Maker and The Day That I Die),
the first of which is certainly the most knock-out prog/metal song that I have
heard for years. After the show, my girlfriend said that she suspects Vanden
Plas broke into the studios where Dream Theater are currently recording and
stole some of the new stuff. It is *that* good. Very subjective, of course, but
one of the best/most enjoyable concerts I've been too (and I've been going to
concerts for 24 years now).
Before the show I was chatting to the singer and the guitarist. They said the
new album won't be out until early next year, but there should be an acoustic
CD coming out later this year (where did they get this idea, Mr. Bahr?). The
band use the same studio and sound engineer as Superior (should be a well-known
name on the jam by now), and both bands know each other (Bernd Bassmer asked
me to pass on best regards, which I did), so I asked a question that has been
on what is left of my mind for a while: how about a double feature with
Vanden Plas and Superior (with Dream Theater as opener - joke). After a few
seconds the answer was "why not. It would be great, and musically we would
suit each other". Possibly something to look forward to.
Now a couple of random thoughts and comments.
1. What are some of you going to listen to next if prog/metal becomes popular
and gets more coverage? All that crappy exclusive attitude and the "I-listen-to
something-that-you-can't-understand" posing will be out of the window. Just a
thought that amuses me.
2. If you don't like what's on MTV or the radio, stop whinging, turn it off and
listen to your tapes and CDs: that's what I buy them for.
3. Another concept album that hasn't been mentioned yet (see past jams) is
"Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by Alan Parsons (and, of course, "The War Of
The Worlds" by various artists).
4. Vanden Plas are an amazing live band.
5. I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy (how's the
head these days, Graham?).
I'm off (well, something round here smells rough).
stay safe and happy listening

A lot of people are strecthing to make there favorite albums, all of a
sudden, concept albums. BTW, I like what I read about Queensryche
"Waring" and the entire Queensryche collection as a concept. But in
places it is a strecth, you have to admit it.
My point is that all album must have a certain concept to them. Album
that don't have a cnocept from the get go, are very disjoint and don't
flow well. These are the "Singles" albums. As much as I like it, I
think, Collective Soul's most recent effort is such a Singles ablum. I
don't see as unity between songs, which I feel is nessacary to have a
excellent album.
Does anyone agree with me here, that all album seem to have some
reoccuring theme which helps them flow better, or am I just blowing hot
air, or something.

Isn't it 'go down on you in a theatER' ? ;-)
About that male perspective... Last time I checked I was still a
male... For me that's not enough reason to like a female singer
'cause she sounds like a 'fuckmonster'...
> 'Nuff said - male perspective!
Guess so...
> It's just one of those things you gotta be male to understand... ;-)
/me is a male and doesn't understand
At least Tori Amos takes the time to giftwrap those thoughts in
some nice words. For instance, on 'Icicle' she's singing about
masturbating as a young girl... But at least she's trying to make a
point about the hypocrisy of religion (or rather those who 'enforce'
it). She's not just saying 'Fuck' for Fuck's sake...
Even when breastfeeding a piglet, she's trying to make a point...
Wish I was that piglet, though (that's my male perspective)
Btw, I taped a concert of hers on Dutch TV last week or so...
I've never ever heard any of her music but I thought I'd tape it
anyway... So I don't really have an opinion on her music, yet...
But IMO you can't knock what you haven't heard, so I won't.
> Gimme a break already.. Alannis is a bitter, whiny psycho-bitch..
Hey ! Maybe I *will* like her... psycho-bitches are cool! ;-)

absolutely and INCREDIBLE concept album. IMO, Promised Land is a close
second to it. i truly think that Promised Land is the most progressive of
all their albums, but to buy it first would be misleading, since it's so

billboard sounding material, stay away from Empire. while there's some
great material on there, the whole album is very, uh, top-40ish. i don't
really care for any of their material before mindcrime. it's too metalish

I just bought a CD called Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance from
Tourniquet and it's pretty cool. Their drummer is killer. Their guitar
stuff kind of reminds me of Megadeth in terms of heaviness and stuff.

It seems like the petition to get DT to release a 2CD set is dead in the
water. I have a different idea though. I'm sure everyone here has heard
of Mortal Kombat. I say that we petition the people at Sega who are
making the pinball game, and ask that they release the soundtrack on CD,
as was done with the music from MK! I think that could potentially save
alot of us about $250. Of course we won't tell them that we'd buy the
Sega Saturn and the game just to hear the music, or they'd never release
the CD! :)
Just a thought. If there is enough response to this on the 'jam,
I'm sure Skadz will set up another petition on dreamt.org. :)

on the contrary (i just love saying that :), smashing pumpkins did a
double cd and theyre touring, and in fact they have about as many
previous cds out as dt does. so what if we have to cut out some of the
old favorites, we'll get more new ones!
another thing- alot of bands with a strong fan base (not big
necessarily, but strong) dont always play alot of the new album anyway,
when i saw ozzy in oct he played NOTHING off of ozmosis, for reasons
that he wanted to give the fans the stuff they could rock along to
live, and he'd do the newer stuff when people got to know it more, so
theres no obligation to do the whole album in concert.
and i just noticed, one of my posts is cut off in the beginning, what

First, I saw Joe Satriani last night. I've never been a huge fan of his,
but I wanted to see him live at least once because he's one of the
"greats." I was really impressed by the show and for those who haven't
seen him live, I would reccommend it. I could've done w/o Stu Hamm's

Second: I can't help but think of Alanis as Axl Rose with ovaries.
Just a fun little thought that makes me smile.

I've occasionally heard people talking about JP's acoustic guitar playing.
IMHO, he is primarily a (phenomenal) electric player. I'd love it if he worked
on some of his acoustic stuff (I'm sure he could become an amazing acoustic
player fairly quickly) and showed off a new side of his playing on the next
album... Then again his electric playing kicks every ass so maybe not!! =)
For anyone interested in hearing the most unbelievable live recording of an

dissappointed..
