On Jam #1510 John Estok said:

    > Then again, this is coming from the same person who thinks
    > "The Mirror" is about a drug dealer!! (And I can defend that!)

    Itchy says:

Well, there is a sample on "The Mirror" from the movie 'Light Sleeper'
which is about a drug dealer... I sent a message about that a while
back, here it is again :

    > I think the woman's voice ('everything you need is around you, the
    > only danger is inside you') is Mary Beth Hurt in a movie called
    > Lightsleeper. Here's some info on it:
    >
    > Light Sleeper (1992, 103 min.)
    > Rating: ***
    > Director: Paul Schrader
    >
    > Cast: Willem Dafoe, Susan Sarandon, Dana Delany, David Clennon
    > Mary Beth Hurt, Victor Garber, Jane Adams, Paul Jabara,
    > David Spade
    >
    > Review:
    > Quintessential Schrader Lonely Guy film, with Dafoe an aging
    > sadsack who wants more out of life than his dead-end job taxi-ing
    > cocaine to upscale users in N.Y. Well performed by all, and with
    > surprising dashes of loopy humor--though leading to an inevitable
    > bloodbath given the standard blueprint for most Schrader movies.
    > Quite the image-altering showcase for Delany.

Unfortunately, no one confirmed this for me, or proved me wrong for
    that matter.....

I also found out where the other samples came from:

    > Damage (1992, 111 min.)
    > Rating: **1/2
    > Director: Louis Malle
    >
    > Cast: Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche, Miranda Richardson, Rupert
    > Graves, Ian Bannen, Leslie Caron, Peter Stormare, Gemma Clark
    >
    > Arch-to-a-fault adaptation of Josephine Hart's minimalist best-
    > seller, about a middle-aged Brit politician who squanders his career
    > and family when he embarks upon a hot-sex affair with his son's
    > mysterious girlfriend. Binoche is frigidly one-note as the latter,
    > sinking what in some ways is dispassionately accomplished filmmaking.
    > Richardson is spectacularly good as Irons' spurned wife. Screenplay
    > by David Hare. Fine music score by Zbigniew Preisner. Unrated version
    > available on cassette and laserdisc at 112m.

I even turned it into a transcription with the times on which the
    samples appear on 'The Mirror'

    > The sound bites are in capitols, so put in your earplugs ;-)
    >
    > (Jeremy Irons in Damage)
    > The feeling that (3:23) I HAVEN'T BEHAVED AS I SHOULD.
    > You know, what you were saying in Hartley about passion...
    > You were right. I was distanted. I know I was.
    >
    > (Mary Beth Hurt in Lightsleeper)
    > (3:26) EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS AROUND YOU, THE ONLY DANGER IS
    > INSIDE YOU
    >
    > (Jeremy Irons in Damage)
    > (3:34) YOU SEE, I THOUGHT YOU COULD CONTROL LIFE...
    > (3:39) BUT IT'S NOT LIKE THAT... There are things you...
    > (3:42) THERE ARE THINGS YOU CAN'T CONTROL

I'm still not 100 % sure about 'Lightsleeper'. Anyone ?

    > BTW, does that mean my name will be mentioned in the FAQ?
    > That would be sooo cool !!!

IMO, 'The Mirror' is clearly about the events that happen in the
movie 'Damage'... Watch the movie & read the lyrics...
Then let me know what you think...

    Bogie said:

Itchy's thoughts on the 'Heaviest DT-songs'-topic:

    * Metropolis - Part I (Nintendo-stuff)
Try letting a 'DT-Virgin' sit through that one !
    * Lie (chorus + kick-ass guitar-solo)
    * Space-Dye Vest (real *heavy* in the other sense of the word)
    * Voices (LaBrie's vox during that 'Fuck This Whore'-bit)

    ---

Just another thought on QR-fans dumping on DT... Maybe they mis-interpretted 'TAKE HOLD OF THE FLAME' !

    ---

    > And about The Beatles. I know they're supposed to be the fathers > of all pop music and thus all rock, and we're all supposed to like > them, but am I alone in saying they suck?

COOL! A "Beatles vs. Dream Theater"-thread... Hope those Beatles-fans aren't gonna flame us now...

Congratulations to Corey E. Cleary for posting his first real message (check it out! it's on jam #1511!)... There's hope for you yet, kid ! --> IMO <--

Yup, me too. That's probably because that's one of those many links DT put in, to connect the songs... They do that a lot (listen to 'Wait For Sleep' and 'Learning To Live')...

*** START OF SHAMELESS MARILLION PLUG ***

Marillion does that about a Zillion times (give of take a few) on their Fucking Kick-ass Brilliant 71:08-long Epic Concept-album BRAVE! Examples: Track 4 starts where track 1 ended... Tracks 4 and 10 both share some melodies and lyrics... well check it out and let me know what you think... They're in serious need of US-Freaks (Marillion-fans)

I have been a HUGE DT-fan since '89 (WDADU) but Marillion is & will always be my #1... I bet a lot of you guys would really dig their stuff if you gave it half a chance... but you probably won't... (this is a dare!). It might take some time to really get into them. My advice is: "Take The Time"... You won't be disappointed... Mail me privately if you want to know anything about Marillion or how to join the Freaks mailinglist...

I NEVER thought I would see the name of this band cross the jam...

I have listened to them since my pre-highschool dayz - I have

"Stop the bleeding" "Psycho Surgery" "Pathogenic Occular Dissonace"

If you want them, any of 'em, they're yours. They have new stuff out, but you have to look hard, and in some not so common locations - like your gospel music bookstore. Yep, tourniquet is/was the frontline metal band of the God-Rock genre. Anyway, you asked, I answered. Mail be back privately at

To the guy who wants help deciding which QR CD to get first:

OPERATION MINDCRIME hands down!!! I've been a Ryche fan since their first album/demo came out. I love all of their stuff, but this is why I recommend Mindcrime:

    1. Best mix of all Queenryches styles. Heavy, mellow, acoustic, electric, all vocal ranges, etc...

    2. Mindcrime is at their peek...they had learned much from the previous albums, and this one has the total "fire" of Ryche!

    3. Mindcrime is a big time concept album. It's too much to write about, but here is the basic jist of it:

There is an underground political organization called the order. They are kind of like a mob. They people of the country are rallying in "Revolution" like movements. The Order takes advantage of a couple of poor souls to perform their assasinations and other plots. The two "victims" are Mary (a teenage runaway hooker), and our main character Niki (a young rebellious punk/drug addict). Dr.X of the order manipulates Niki with heroin and Mary. After using Mary to manipulate Niki, Dr.X tries to convince Niki he must kill her also. (there's something to do with a preist here that I dont quite understand. I know the priest helps Mary off the streets, but then uses her for sex) Niki goes to Mary in confusion, then tries to warn her and get her to unite with him and bail. Niki wakes up in Mary's apartment after a heroin jaunt, handcuffed with police around. He has been framed for Mary's death! Niki ends up in a psycho ward or hospital, completely warped from everything that has happened, to the point where he doesn't even really know himself anymore (Eye's of a Stranger)!

You'll notice that in the beginning of a CD you hear a nurse giving a guys a shot. Listen carefully to the news on the TV in the background..it gives you a clue about all this. Welp, that guy is Niki...and as he nods off from the shot, you relive the entire journey...OPERATION MINDCRIME!

It's a very exciting album to me, and when I saw them do it live I was amazed! My favorite part was "Niki" and "Mary" singing back and forth to each other in their most desperate hour.

    I'll shut up now :)

    buster

    Jammers,

Just wanted to pass on some information on Savatage, Al Pitrelli, etc.

The Savatage Fan Home Page has posted a number of new Savatage related pictures, including pictures of Al Pitrelli. A number of these photos where taken during the video shoot for "One Child" which just finshed shooting 2-3 weeks ago. The pictures of Al are killer!!! In the two close up pics of him at the video set, he has a full beard, looks pretty tough....

To check them out go to

Other pics are from the DWD tour in Greece, Poland, Germany.... and plenty of others.

Remember when Guns N Roses was really big? The catch-phrase was "heavy metal." Any rock that was popular was at that time was called "metal." GnR was referred to as "metal" all the time. IMHO, GnR is not metal. It's much in the same manner as today's popular rock bands get stuck with the "alternative" tag.

Everybody seems to be seeking out and soliciting recommendations for other prog-rock bands. C'mon, people. There's more to life/music than prog-rock/metal. Granted, it's a great genre, but enough can be enough sometimes. By only listening to prog-rock/metal, as expansive as the genre is, you are in fact closing yourself off, and you're just as guilty as the MTV generation that a lot of people are so fond of bashing with utter vitriol.

I'm glad to see the occasional reference to jazz-rock fusion. Hell, in a recent jam, someone mentioned DiMeola, McLaughlin, and DeLucia. But was Buck right? Are we all just a bunch of metal-heads? I've seen references to neo-classical shred/prog/whatever ever since I joined the Jam. If you're into that, how 'bout checking out some "real" classical? If you dig the jams da boyz do every once in a while in concert, then check out some jazz-rock fusion, or even straight-ahead jazz. Many of those jams are not unlike anything that fusion guys like Scott Henderson, Al DiMeola, John Scofield or Mike Stern would play.

Check these guys out, like Scott Henderson or Al DiMeola if you haven't done so already. You'll discover a whole new world with a small footing in one we're already familar with and extremely fond of.
