Definitely go for Red and the Larks Tongues In Aspic. Red is
incredibly bleak but also quite awesome... Larks tongues has its
amazing parts as well, but its not as consistantly cool. its a little
more experimental, though. well, a lot more. but Red is a real
monster... Wetton's vocals are very elegant. the mood of Red
throughout is kinda like walking through the snowy, empty streets of
the city on christmas eve all alone. larks tongues isn't quite as
    dark.

starless and bible black isn't bad, but it doesn't really have
anything that sticks out. go for Red first, then Larks Tongues. then

    Hello Jammers,

Part two in response to Pat's request: (note that I recommended Larks
Tongues in Aspic as the best starting disk, but I like all of these
albums... Starless & Bible Black is probably my favorite of the studio
albums with Wetton on vocals, it has some of his best singing

Starless and Bible Black - 1974

Lineup: David Cross - Violin, Violia, Keyboards
Robert Fripp - Guitar, Mellotron, Devices
                    John Wetton - Bass, Vocals
                    Bill Bruford - Percussion

            Songs: The Great Deceiver (4:03)
(Basically a song about the Devil, crazy lyrics, heavy
with cool bass riff during the refrain, segues into
                     Lament)

                    Lament (4:02)
(A song about the exploitation in the music business,
from the hopes of a young band, to the realization that
it is only a matter of time until you get screwed.
Begins with a bass, violin feature along with Wetton's
                     vocals, best Palmer-James lyrics (IMO))

                    We'll Let You Know (3:41)
(An instrumental improvisational piece, kinda funked
at times due to Wetton's bass)

                    The Night Watch (4:42)
(A song about the famous painting of the same name,
depicts the life of a city guard... and the description
of the town, good Fripp guitar parts during the lyrical
                     delivery, kinda soaring, nice solo)

                    Trio (5:41)
(Violin, Bass, Guitar trio song, nice and peaceful, kinda
song for mourning loss, Bruford is given credit on the
song for not playing, hence no drums.)

                    The Mincer (4:09)
(Bass and drum rhythm over guitar solo and dense chords)

                    Starless & Bible Black (9:14)
(Improvisation, lots of wierd playing, as in any improv,
lots of Fripp shreading on this one)

                    Fracture (11:17)
(Fripp lays down an intricate guitar lead in, met by a
bass riff, into and into a variation on Fripp's lead
part from the beginning of the song, lots of percussion
                     going on)

    Part III coming soon... Red

    Later,

    Mike

    Hello Jammers,

This is part three of my posts on King Crimson...

            Red - 1974

            Lineup: Robert Fripp: Guitar, Mellotron
                    John Wetton: Bass, Vocals
                    Bill Bruford: Percussion
(guests on violin, sax, oboe, cornet)

            Songs: Red (6:16)
(Heavy instrumental, still played live by the current
incarnation of the band, the riff is repeated by the
different insturments in turn and other band members
follow around the riff, bass chord progression about
                     3:00 into the song)

                    Fallen Angel (5:58)
(Starts to heavy riff, leads into vocals by Wetton,
kinda melodic for a while, nice woodwind background
accompanyment, sounds like the oboe, guitar builds into
the refrain, cornet solo during refrain)

                    One More Red Nightmare (7:07)
(Starts to heavy theme riff, into wild drumming by
Bruford who is in fly away jazz mode on this one,
Wetton comes in on heavier vocals, themes end to wild
drumming over sustained guitar chords, then back into
                     lyrics)

                    Providence (8:06)
(An improvisational piece long violin solo at the
beginning other instruments add color, lots of crazy
violin through the first three minutes of the piece,
continues with wildness and guitar and bass have solos)

                    Starless (12:18)
(starts with Mellotron and bass riff, with drums, guitar
plays the theme of the song, Wetton comes in on passion
filled vocals shortly afterword, sax comes into the
refrain and solos, continues during next verse, song
breaks into an insturmental break for several minutes
with a later reprise of the lyrical theme, really
                     nice "epic" Crimson piece)

Well for those who have survived this stuff, please check out this group,
they are incredible musicians. The other two sets with Wetton on vocals
The Great Deceiver (an incredible 4CD live set from this group)
USA (an out of print live album featuring same group, overdubbed violin
            by Eddie Jobson (UK))

    Later,

    here are my (far-fetched) guesses...

    -dt to record concept album
    -dt to tour with rush
    -dt to allow taping
-dt to hand out soundboard DATs at every show
-dt to pay me to tape them :)
-dt to get kevin moore back
-dt to play college station, tx

(these are in decreasing order of likeliness to ever happen in
            this lifetime) ;)

as much as i hate to say it, i really hope they dont allow taping
because i know i would get fired for taking 3 months off to follow
    them around :)

if you wanna see the beginning of this go back a few jams and look for
it... getting on with it ->

    >Point #1: Smashing Pumpkins' song-lengths don't even come close to
    >Dream Theater's. If the issue is a time-constraint based on a sudden
    >ton of new material, it's DT who will be playing less in the event of
    >a double-disc, twenty-track release. Capice?

no, dt will still play the same amount of their songs... even if they
didnt do a double album they'd still play the same amount of songs, i'm
saying with the double album (btw this is really outdated because i
like the idea of one album and releases on singles and stuff by now,
but to defent my previous point) there'd be more new songs to play, and
the same amount of songs would be done.

whats more, they'll still have the same amount of songs, just some wont
    be on the new album.

    >Point #2: Smashing Pumpkins aren't in the 1% of good alternative
    >bands. They're in the top 5%, but they can't break into the high
    >levels until Billy Corgan grows his hair back.

or james iha puts that dress back on

    >"Now I have a machine gun. Ho ho ho."

"Moo moo i love cow cow milk."

    >Gee, Ozzy only has what...63 albums to choose from? So what if he
    >doesn't play the new material, he's got years of classics to jam on
    >for four hours. His setlist of "possible songs to play live" far
    >outnumbers DT's. I still think a twenty-track release is crazy, unless
    >they include the card they did in Awake so fans could mail in which
    >songs are their most/least favorites.

exactly, which was the point i was making... doing a double album
shouldn't affect their touring much at all. tu capice? besides,
putting a card in after is kind of like

<POW!> "FREEZE!" "sometimes they just never listen..." :)

no. this is wrong. i don't buy it at all. i think she is clearly
_lip-synching_ but i dont see any wayshe is actually singing. those

I hate to say it but Hysteria SUCKED COW BALLS, as did all Def
Leppard. This was a band that was competing in the club circuit
during the late 70's and early 80's with Iron Maiden. Maiden blows
away DL anyday. Plus DL was the real Spinal Tap except with
Guitarists instead of Drummers. I never owned Hysteria and never will.
The first Album I ever bought was Iron Maiden's The Number of the
Beast back in 1982. That was like pulling teeth to get it from my
    parents back then.

    6) DT will play Atlanta on this next tour! (Well, they probably will
        anyway, but jus' makin' suuure....)
    7) Bernd Basmer is actually John Petrucci in disguise and Superior is
        a carefully-disguised side project. :)
    8) Ben Laussade is actually Mike Portnoy in disguise.....ahh, you get
        the picture. :)

    .....and my "real" guess....

    9) DT will play either ProgDay or Progscape, or both. :)

My guesses on this secret thing

1- A real concept album. 2- Ronnie Scott video 3- Itchy turns 90% of DT fans onto Marillion and they will tour together. 4- All future DT songs will be in F# instead of F-Sharp. 5- Mike Bahr's CDs will sell for $5 each. 6- Petrucci will buy Sega Saturns for all Jam members. 7- John Myung speaks and utters the third word in the 'gry' riddle. 8- Berklee will start giving out guarantees with their diplomas 9- Necrophilia will also be released as a music-only CD at regular price. 10- I'll get an EOJ with my only post this month.
