So JP supposedly lives near Northport, LI? Way-cool! My folks lived
in Northport when I was born (then they moved to Mass., then to CT,
then to GA where I am now). I knew it was Only a Matter of Time
before I became DT-connected in some small, unimportant way...! :)

Yeah, those cheating bastards. You spend weeks trying to mute the five strings you DON'T want to sound during those fast tapping runs, then you find out that the masters of the technique are using an artificial third hand to keep the open-string-interference nightmares from ever happening. Reb Beach used to just tie a rag around the first fret. Ahh, back in the days when he had a column, when people yearned for knowledge of every trick in the book and weren't afraid to take such musical ideas a step further themselves...

    > >Yngwie Malmsteen, "Fire & Ice." (1992) Clearer production and tighter > >compositions than anything done before this album. Meaning, I advise > >you to get this one and don't bother with anything done before it. :) > > I'd much rather buy Rising Force...

    Well I wouldn't! So there! :P

    And yo mamma's a pajama! :)

    > >Sign," the beginning of his move to the heavier side. Yngwie continues > >this heaviness further on "Magnum Opus" (immediately following SS), > >which I haven't heard but am told is "fuckin' heavy as shit!" > > Heavy as shit? I understand it was your basic 80's hair band metal.

Yeah, I heard that too, but I haven't heard the album yet, so I guess we're just a pair of Tweedles...

    > Did you ever hear 'The Guitars that Rule the World'? IMO Reb's was the > best song on that CD. Paul Gilbert also came up w/ a pretty cool ditty.

Yes, I agree strongly. That piece kicks ass! I constantly ask myself "What sort of style do you have there, Steve? What kind of guitar do YOU play?" Probably one of the best examples I've been able to come up with for quite some time is Reb's "Black Magic." Fast, agressive, and loaded with crazy-ass hummingbird techniques.

Paul's piece, "I Understand Completely" is so cheesy it couldn't be anyone but Paul. :) This is the song where he plays little acoustic solos, where I was able to clock him at 18nps (notes per second) because he's picking at a constant, uninterrupted pace for an extended period of time. Yngwie I clocked at a strong 16nps, which means he could probably go a leetle beet faster if he would just start applying himself a little more, trying a few more solos here and there, and for God's sake getting over that terrible self-esteem deficiency.

    * A word about Reb. He said in '94 that fans complained about his subdued soloing on Winger's third album, "Pull," so he was putting together material for a solo album with "tons of soloing" to please the shredheads. I don't know what he's up to now, but if/when he gets that project together, you can bet he won't be compromising his technique with the present trends in guitar music. ;>

    > Sorry Bafu, didn't work this time ;)

Probably because I had other things on my mind, so my Black Magic wasn't working... Hey, that's kinda cool... Reb Beach is kind of like a wizard, isn't he? Guys? Hello?

---- > From: Michael Bahr <durnik@indirect.com> > Subject: Necronomicon/Saturn/Petrucci > > Is Necronomicon already out? I can rent a Saturn and dub the > soundtrack out to DAT, and add the best stuff to Precious Things.

Let's see. From what I remember about those games in general, the music is different for the different levels. You have to do well (ie WIN) to even hear the later soundtrack pieces. OR...if it's on cd, can you listen to the entire soundtrack on a regular cd-player whenever you want? That'd be hella lucky.

All I remember is Nintendo's "Blaster Master" having the coolest sixth-level soundtrack that wildly mimicked speed metal, but unfortunately you had to go through five excruciating levels of ghastly beasts. Like GAO auditors and licensed CPAs.

That's all I can say.

John Petrucci is finally going to record all those COOL clinic-songs in the studio, and give all the desiring guitarists on the planet a free copy of the disc?

The band is going to release some of their singles in THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA???

They're organizing a Monsters-Of-Rock type tour with Extreme, Mr. Big, Fates Warning, and King's X? Hey, sounds cool. Get me a ticket.

They're going to engage in group sex on stage with Pamela Anderson Lee during the shows on their next tour? Those drum-solo strobe-lights could come in handy...

Let's see. Mike Portnoy found LaBrie's juries (final exams for voice students) from 1988 or whenever they were and decided to release them to us?

    Wait, you said "we."

Dangit, then it's probably a tour with that we-never-slow-down-we-go- everywhere-fast band. What was their name?

Or an appearance at that darn Ytsecon that I won't be able to get to. Yeah, that'd be perfect. My ONE CHANCE to box with Portnoy, and I won't even BE there...

    > Also be on the watch for Tori Amos unplugged in September!!

Whoah!! Just Tori and her piano! FINALLY something different from all that pulse-pounding death metal on her albums! What a step away!

The "SECRET" that Mike is talking about... is the fact that Rush's management has finally come to their senses and realized that they should actually OPEn for DT. Since Neil Peart has been taking lessons from MP for the last 10 years to improve on his somewhat shabby techniques, this should make for a very enjoyable tour.

Actually.. all kidding aside.. the "SECRET" is that DT, will be touring with Fates, and QR, on the Progrevolution Tour (don't I wish)...

No seriously... the "secret" is that JP is giving a clinic at Mike's house..

er... um.. dreaming again... ok.. my real guess this time..

DT will be touring with GC as their opener.. (here he comes.. oughta left field again)

Ok... I don't really care what the secret is... unless it's that DT is playing my city this time around.. on the Awake tour.. they totally bounced around San Diego, but never came here. Twice in LA, once or twice in Phoenix.. geez.. both times they've been here.. we've sold out BIG locations well in advance...

Actually.. the reason I don't care.. is cause Pantera's "The Great Southern Trendkill" comes out tomorrow... :)

I think the news is that Rush will open for DT this fall. Kind of a bummer cause I'd like Rush to be able to play more than 45 minutes, but, oh well, they know who the better musicians are!

(The previous paragraph was written with tongue firmly in cheek and the rest of the body in several layers of asbestos.) The part about the better musicians is true, though!

Aha, so the music CAN all be played one track after another instead of having to get through the entire game. Sounds cool. I'll probably wait until one of the game mags (Gamepro, etc.) has Necronomicon on its used list. Wait a month or two, the price should drop to about $30. Of course, the question remains CAN YOU WAIT THAT LONG??? :)

Damn. Well said. I think it's because DT and many bands who still play (gulp!) heavy stuff are guaranteed sales in Japan because that country has a much higher level of respect overall for musicians like DT than the majority of this one.

    > I say that *if* the songs are recorded and released, they should be > released in a manner that they can be obtained by the most DT fans > possible. I agree. But still, management makes decisions based on exactly what you said, what makes their organization money? Releasing singles etc. in Europe and Japan is a better deal as far as they're concerned than doing so in the US. Here it's much more of a gamble.

Yeah! Show Da Man! Show'im up!

I just read through that Sheehan/Gilbert interview from this month's Guitar School magazine (yes I located a copy that wasn't missing twenty pages). Those guys are really clear-headed. Sheehan mentioned that part of the reason he does clinics is to "put my thumb on the pulse" of current musical trends. The neat part is, every time he sets up his clinic-tour with the music stores, the places fill up with reservations in a matter of days and the stores are always over-crowded with people...

That's strange, I thought alternative was what everyone liked these days.

    Hello Jammers,

This is in answer to Pat's request for King Crimson info:

Larks Tongues in Aspic - 1973

Lineup: David Cross - Violin, Viola, Mellotron Robert Fripp - Guitar, Mellotron, Devices John Wetton - Bass, Vocals Bill Bruford - Drums Jamie Muir - Percussion, Chains

Songs: Larks Tongues in Aspic, Part One (13:36) (A violin driven instrumental that builds into a furious heavy riff and extremely fast picking by Fripp, repeats several times with variation, incredible guitar song)

Book of Saturdays (2:49) (A vocal oriented tune features Wetton with violin accom)

Exiles (7:40) (Starts with a distorted effect, builds into a violin and guitar accom to Wetton's vocals, a lyric about being truly alone, lots of instrumental breaks, ends with violin solo)

Easy Money (7:54) (Starts with strained harmony vocals, lyrics are about materialism and the price of fame, coy vocal presentation by Wetton, lyrics were often altered live, lots of sound effects in this song, guitar solo in the middle by Fripp, kinda moderate pace, he builds into more difficult playing, after band instrumental part goes back into verse, especially pay attention to Jamie Muir on wild assorted percussion)

The Talking Drum (7:26) (Starts quietly with sparce percussion, solo area for Bruford and Muir, alternating quick bass riff comes in and repeats with the drums, violin comes in minutes later, then guitar adds on top of violin, guitar becomes heavier, builds into shreiking peak, then into LTIA2)

Larks Tongues in Aspic - Part 2 (7:12) (Starts with heavy guitar riff, add crunchy bass a few seconds later, play main riffs and theme, then go into first movement with violin lead with doubled guitar, instruments alternate on lead theme and add percussion parts, lots of crazy trademark Fripp guitar along with violin shreading at the middle, build into loud repetative joint pulses)

I would recommend this album above Starless & Bible Black, Red, USA, and the Great Deceiver as a good starting album, I would say Great Deceiver, but it is a 4CD set and IMO too expensive to start with.

I'll review the other studio albums in later posts.

    Later,

    Mike
