i think you are right, Max. I also seem to recall reading something about
this woman (a Canadian) singing some songs on Alex Lifeson's Victor
album. At first i thought it was a guy, but it does sound the same as
"Mary", and i don't think her name is Pamela Moore.

Has anybody else noticed that this CD is really, really, hard on stereos... It's production is so heavy, that some of the low end is really killing my car speakers.. Especially songs like Drag the Waters. That just beats the shit out of my car system. I had to dub the CD onto tape to clip some of the high and low end just so my car could handle it.. on a different note... Darryl just keeps getting better and better.. He's definitly earned the title "Most Dangerous Guitarist".. The riffs this guy comes up with... just when you think the whole song is going to fall apart... it drops into this groove that makes you just shake your head.. (at least I do)

I think you need to listen to SSM again. Pamela Moore if definitely singing on this song. Geoff's voice is great.. but even he can't change the tonal characteristics that much. The vibrato is completely different, and is the phrasing. Sorry.. but that's not Geoff singing it.. besides.. I was at the LA show when she came out and sang those parts... it's quite obvious who sang what.

Just a few things I would like to say before the end of the semester and I won't have access to e-mail:

In DT, who do you think is the best player at his respective instrument? My vote goes to the mute, John Myung. A close second being Petrucci.

Another question for all...If one of the members would leave due to "creative differences", who would be the hardest to replace? IMO, in order of easiest to hardest to replace: 5. Derek 4. Portnoy 3. Labrie 2. Myung 1. Petrucci They replaces KM pretty easily, I think Derek could be replaced pretty easily also. I gave the edge to Petrucci over Myung because I think he's a better song writer lyrically.

    What do you think?

Hiya Itchy and others, I personally like hearing about cool bands on the jam-if it wasn't for the jam I never would have even considered buying any Savatage (I thought they would be cheesy 80's crap-metal). Learning about other bands is a positive by-product of the jam. I have never heard any of Marillion's music so I don't know if I like them or hate them, but the more good things I hear about them, the greater my chances of searching through the "M" section of the local music store. Itchy, don't unsubscribe just because one person was a jerk, hopefully the rest of us jammers make up for that.

    Cheers!

i see where youre coming from. alot of people can go just for the music, but many also like a little spice eh? i havent seen DT live (yet) so i can't place any judgements on how they were or anything, but wouldnt it rule with all sorts of explosions and cages n stuff? :) a problem though is for when they play small venues, well, ya just cant do that stuff... also remember theyre working their asses off on concentration up there. its EXTREMELY hard to play all that stuff and they're most likely concerned with not bombing the gig rather than running around and starting fires onstage. :)

I've been meaning to get some marillion for a while now. honestly, theres nobody i have a problem with. i dont care how much or how little or what about anyone posts! if i disagree with some things, i may respond and say what i think, but in no way do i want them off the list, nor am i angry they posted it.

    Hi

I just want to apologize to Pat 'Gabbo' Griffin... As it turns out, he really wasn't flaming me, he was just warning me for a flame-war 'waiting to happen'. So if anyone is considering sending a private e-mail to Pat or posting something to the jam in my defence, thanks, but please don't...

I realize that I do get a bit lyrical when I'm talking about 'them'. But I didn't notice I was bothering anyone... I would have stopped if I had noticed.

I'm still getting messages from Jammers who are interrested in 'them', so I at least have the satisfaction that my posts weren't just wasted bandwidth... So far the responses I got were great ! I would still love to hear from those who've recently checked 'them' out. What do you think ? What are your favourite tracks ?

Thanks to those who supported me on the jam and through private E-mail.

    Funny thing:

Did anyone notice Aaron K Silverman talking about 'them' and Arena on Jam #1530 ? Did you also Arena's label ?

    > Griffin Music Inc. <---- Pat ? Care to explain ? ;-) > PO Box 87587 > Carol Stream, IL 60188-7587

Btw, I have that Arena album (or course!) and it's great, although IMO they're trying to hard to sound like 'them' during those first albums. But, since I love those albums I don't really mind...

i just don't see anyway that tate didnt do mary's lines. i'm about thisclose to going belligerent, but i won't because then its a real bitch if you're wrong. the points that have been made on the pro-pam moore side are: 1. she's listed in the credits as playing sister mary 2. she's _obviously_ singing them on livecrime. 3. the tonal characteristics and accent sounds are totally difference. 4. geoff couldn't have done them in the studio, and pam live because they sound the exact same as for point 1, anthony valentine is credited as playing doctor x, and operation mindcrime, i believe, is dr. x speaking, yet valentine isn't doing the singing. as for the credits in livecrime where it says sister mary, and the rest of the contributors are just listed as voices of. that is because they don't appear on stage. 2 & 4- she's lip-synching. thats why their is the layered vocals on livecrime and why they sound _exactly_ the same. in the cd, the sound of those vocals (as in the source) is different, as if its not come from a microphone. 3. not a singer, know little about singing, but all i hear geoff singing in falsetto. actually i should just go looking in some QR faq's and see if anything turns up, but that would take effort.

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! I'm DONE WITH FINALS!!!! YES!!!!! That means, I can devote a LOT more time on the YtseCon III, the Dream Theater web page, and the informal get together over the summer.

First of all, I just finished yesterday, and I won't be settled until I move out of my dorm, so next week I'll be calling people up like a storm!

Right now, the YtseCon III looks like it'll be on October 12th, which is the Saturday of the Columbus Day weekend. I still have to relay this bit of info to management, so don't mark your calenders just yet! I'm still waiting for a response from the travel agent, that way I'll be able to get some good airline/hotel deals for those of you who are flying in. Right now, I'm looking at East Rutherford in New Jersey, but that can definitely change at this point in time. To answer those questions that I've gotten over e-mail, I haven't picked out a hotel yet.

Things will probably end up being more formal this time around, meaning that since I'm starting to work with travel agents, such and such, those of you who plan to come will get a registration package over the mail, so you can send out your reservations and money over the mail. You'll have plenty of time to send them back, I just need to set them up within the next month. Latecomers can also come in, but I haven't made any money arrangements yet, so I can't tell you guys anything about prices now.

To remind you guys of the tentative events at this convention, the biggest events that are planned will be a listening preview of the new Dream Theater album, followed by an autographed session. To answer some of your questions, I am not certain as to whether you guys can buy copies of the new album at the Convention. I'll keep you guys informed!

I just want to take the time out to thank all of you jammers who have been so patient with me (because finals took up too much of my time!), and definitely to the awesome guys who are working with me on this whole thing! You guys rule!

Well anyways, I'll keep you guys informed on everything when everything happens. A lot of things will start happening starting next week (when I'm all settled in at home). So news will be flying on the jam more often in the near future.

As for the informal ytsejam get together, I suggest having a Q-Zar get together on Long Island. If any of you guys are interested, then email me! I might have some pretty cool surprises in store for you guys for this informal event!

Also, I've spoken to Josh Sager at Red Sector A (he's in charge of this whole DT page thing), and I think that it'll be something to definitely look forward to! That's all I'm gonna say about that.

I'd better send out this letter, it's getting too long! I'll talk with you guys later!

    Yours, Jeff =)

You forgot a few bands on Magna Carta. First of all, I have the Enchant CD and they really sound different from the tracks they did on the tribute CDs. They sound somewhat like Rush to me, probably due to the drummer's heavy Peart influence, even down to the Moving Pictures-sounding drums. Great shit. In the tribute cD department, you forgot The moon Revisitted, the Pnk Floyd tribute. Good, but not as good as the other two tributes. Remakes the Dark Side of the Moon Cd in its entirety. There is also Tempest, an IRish sounding folk prog band, which sounds like prog and irish folk music. I don't like it myself, but others might. Slight Tull influence, but I can't really be sure because I can't listen to it. Cairo sounds a lot like ELP in places to me. And if Magellan doesn't have a drummer, who does the drums. Three guys? keyboards, guitar, and ... what else? If that is sequenced drums, I'm even more impressed than I was and that's a lot. World trade is good as well, but not as progressive as the other bands. By the way, in June, MC will be relasing new material, including the Jethro Tull and Rush tribute CDs, some new bands debut CDs, and I think some follow-up releases from already signed bands. Keep an eye out, MC is a great lable and I hope they get some more exposure soon.

D.T. sucks live? Man, I've got to disagree here. I've only seen D.T. three times and never once have they disappointed me. Are you saying that they suck because they reproduce the studio CD live and that there is no visual "show"? For me, just seeing D.T. pull those songs off live is show enough. I also saw F.W. open up for D.T. and no way in hell did they blow D.T. off of the stage. As David St. Hubbins (of Spinal Tap) would say, "Is This A Joke?".
