C'mon! As a fan of both bands (I think that Fates has
finally edged out QR in my "Top 5 favoritebands" list),
it's pathetic to see you guys go back and forth this
way. Some bands have off nights (i wasn't too impressed
with DT on the IAW tour, but the Awake tour was awesome).

I saw them both in SFO and I thought FW was one of the
best opening acts I've seen. The crowd, at least those near
the stage, were really into them. I can die happy now that
I've seen 11th Hour live. I thought both bands had tremendous
energy that night. Of course, the DT part was a little better
because of the lights and such...
    ______________

I agree with the guy who said Darryl's guitar work is his
best yet. Really killer stuff. I especially love the end
of Floods (after the vocals). If only Terry Date could've
produced WDADU this way. I also think that Pantera's
songwriting has improved. I thought FBD kind of sucked in
that category (except for Slaughtered, which is a great song)l.
Songwriting on CFH was pretty good. I don't have VDoP, so I
    can't comment on that.

    hey jammers,
I was just reading some back jams trying to catch up with what's going
on since I've been in hight study mode for finals. I noticed that Def
Leppard has been getting some serious flames on here recently. I know that
they aren't progressive and that's why I haven't mentioned the fact that I'm
a die hard fan of the lepp's. I do however happen to think that they are
seriously changing the direction of there music, not nessessarilly to a
progressive format but they are giving up the glam sound that made them so
popular. I've heard a couple of the tracks already for the new album and I
must say I was impressed. Athough they do not compare to the bands we talk
about on here they are making some serious strides to get to a new level of
musicianship. Their Drummer, although no match for Mike Portnoy, has more
heart and determination than most drummers out there for he now plays on a
completely accoustic kit with still only one arm. I find that personally
amazing. I think that Vivian Campbell has also been a great influence on
the band and will bring them closer to that progressive sound that we all
love and respect. I'm not expecting any of you to run out and buy the album
but at least give them some credit for trying to break there glam rock mold.
I know I'm going to get pleanty of flames for this so to make the jam flow
better send them to me personally rather than cluttering up the jam.
Sorry for the out of context post, just had to get it off of my chest.

    >As for who would be easiest or hardest to replace.. I think MP would be >hardest.

First of all, do you mean replace like 1. would be able to play a concert and nobody would know that it wasn't Mike because he did everything exactly the same OR 2. replace Mike and add a new aspect/refreshment to the band...which is hopefully what Derek will do.

With #1, I could do it. :-)With #2...I wouldn't do it. I don't really have my own style yet. Right now I'm just taking in all types of drumming and seeing what develops when they get mixed up. But, I can think of lots of drummers who could hold their own in the DT style, and add new things...Terry Bozzio..Tim "Herb" Alexander...Neil Peart...Mark Zonder...Bill Bruford....among others, I'm sure. BTW, I didn't mean that I was the ONLY one who could do the #1. :-)

    >but quality >drummers are hard to find.. partly because I think when you're young.. >most people want to be on the front of the stage.. not stuck behind a drum >kit..

I bet if you asked Mike Portnoy if he'd like to be at the front of the stage, he'd give you a big, enthusiastic YES. That's the way he plays, anyhow. There's ONE Mike Portnoy thing that I really can't get down. The ghost-note-a-plenty groove under the first verse of Scarred. Up until "Can't hear it..". And, that's also one of the few times where he is not doing something that's inconspicuous....he doesn't put it out there right in front of your face. It's very subtle. Those kind of things are my favorite things to play. Most everything else may be hard, but he makes it so OBVIOUS what he's doing, just to make sure you know he's there. Whoa...I kinda rambled. Cool.

    >.P.S. Drummers are real musicians too!!!! >

I hear ya loud and clear! Especially ones that play piano and french horn too, though.... :-)

    Buhbye.

Celebrate we will, because life is short but sweet for certain. The Proudest Mr. Cool you ever seen.

    Hey gang,

I have Seed Ling also. (Picked it up for $2 at Nuggets, nya nya! :) ) I agree that it belongs in the same genre with Echolyn, although I think it's more alternative than progressive. Some neat fretless bass I hear in there, though. I like the second half of the album best; they seem to rock out more. First album: A breakdancing record which came with a how-to poster! I think my sister might have it somewhere. The first music album was Weird Al In 3-D, and the first album I desperately NEEDED was Live After Death, by Iron Maiden, who don't suck balls by a long shot. (I even like the Fear of the Dark album.) For those who also have seen them recently, did Janick Gers always play leaning sideways with the guitar resting vertically on his hip? :) First CD was Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe.

    Party on,

Hi all, I haven't posted much lately, been pretty busy. I just wanted to bring up the fact that there is such an effects processor called a Gender Bender. I believe that you can get them in some Eventide products. It can make a male voice sound like a female and I would imagine vice-versa. I think Geoff probably used one of these items to sing the Sister Mary parts.

Thats it for now. I've been jotting down a list of topics that I've been meaning to write about but I haven't had time to post it. Keep an eye out for a whole jam from me sometime in the future. :) At the very least I will get one of the treasured EOJ's.

Well I was only kidding guy. But you know, I think that after a certain speed, I pretty much place them as equals. what I *really* care about is how clean they play, and how well they control their phrasing while go off into shred-o-la-la land. You notice it especially if you listen to it at half speed...Yngwie is fucking incredible... everything is SSOOOO detailed, no matter how fast he plays...even vibrato.... I haven't tried that w/ Mr Gilbert yet, though...

The other point I have is that really, you'll never know if anybody is faster than anybody than anybody else, because you never really know if he/she is playing as fast as they can...

Check out the actual 'Rising Force'... it has his guitar being held by a womans hand.. sorta like the lady in the lake that holds Excalibur... 1. About Mike Portnoy being the second most disposable in the band- I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you there, Jeff (and I have a feeling I'm not going to be the only one). I have a strong suspicion that you are not a drummer. Since I'm not a drummer either, I can only partially fathom how unbelievable Mike is, but since you feel percussionists like him are a dime a dozen, I'm curious to know where you've heard drumming like that before.

There are plenty of excellent drummers out there. My opinion is that Mike *is* Dream Theater, with J.P., perhaps, as the XO. _That_ is why I think he is irreplaceable. His personality has everything to do with it. Charisma, yeah... that's the ticket.

Of course, we all know that John Myung runs everything behind the scenes :>)>

In lieu of some discussion on the DT IRC, I've decided to write the following Dream Theater Purity Test. Do you want to know how much of a Dream Theater listener you are? Take the Test!

(BTW, these are just coming of the top of my head right now...I'll organize them much later.)

    1. Have you ever heard of Dream Theater? 2. Have you ever listened to Dream Theater? 3. Have you ever purchased a Dream Theater album? (Album in this case would be something the band released.) 4. Have you purchased more than 3 Dream Theater albums? 5. Have you purchased a Dream Theater video? 6. Have you gone to see the band in concert? 7. With Charlie Dominici on vocals? 8. Did you go backstage? 9. Did you talk to the band members? 10. Did you get John Myung to speak? 11. More than 1 word at a time? 12. Did you ever hear a Dream Theater song in F#? 13. How about F-sharp? 14. Can you play a Dream Theater song on any instrument? 15. Are you in the band? 16. Can you out-perform John Petrucci on guitar? 17. James LaBrie on guitar? (Even if you don't play guitar, answer yes.) 18. Is DT your favorite band?

Well...Scotch told me to stop at number 69. Maybe when I get a chance, I'll organize this preview into something more. But, it's just a taste of what's to come.
