over and she had this look of horror on her face... It was cool! :)

Her name is Pamela Moore, and she really did sing "Suite Sister Mary". She sings professionally in a band in the San Fransisco area, I seem to remember reading.

YO YO YO!! I'm back. d00ds.
I had a little problem with the internet provider (we forgot to pay them) and had no access for about a week. But I'm fine and dandy now. And, quite happy too.
Dave Matthews Band is now my favorite band. Sorry if that's sacrilege, but they are (notice I didn't say that they were BETTER than anybody. That means you can't flame me). The new album, "Crash", is simply amazing. DMB has expanded themselves and embraced even more styles in this album. It also takes the best stuff from the previous album and has more of it. Anybody else have it?
So. Did I miss anything important while I was gone? Nope? Oh yeah..nothing important happens here. Cool things have been happening lately with the lack of internet access, so, now that I have it back, if things get worse, I'm unsubbing and going home. But, that is yet to be determined. Ta ta for now.
Hm...I don't think I ever got a post in that told you that both school bands I'm in (symphonic and jazz) got first place at a competetion in California. Just thought I'd leave with a lil' bragging.
Dave Matthews Band kicks the hell outta Dream Theater. The Proudest Mr. Cool you ever seen.

Oh great, this guy is leaving, so he sets us up with a thread that will probably have us all hating each other within a month. My response is: I refuse to try to answer such a subjective question, which can only lead to divisive consequences. >Another question for all...If one of the members would leave due to >"creative differences", who would be the hardest to replace?
Jeff, when you leave the 'jam, you will be the EASIEST to replace.
Dave King Wrote:

I'm sorry, what planet was this tour on? I saw FW open for DT during the Awake tour (in Denver, November 22, 1994) and FW couldn't even get the crowd's attention. I wish I had listened closer (after reading all the praise you jammers heap on them) but NOBODY was listening, and only the last few songs sounded interesting.
and: >>Sorry. What's wrong with ACOS? IMO there's more in its 23 mins than >>in whole AWAKE >
Huh? You GOTTA be kidding! IMHO Awake is the best album EVER recorded, at least until next fall ;^) and though I love ACoS too, it's much further down the list.
To all you college types lamenting about having no net access during the summer, I got news for ya - they sell computers (and modems) in the stores now! Or go "used", and you could get a crappy 286 or 386 and a fast modem for a couple hundred bux and keep on 'jammin wit' da crew.
p.s. This offer does not apply to Jeff DeCoste :-)

> > >In DT, who do you think is the best player at his respective > >instrument? > Once again we are forced to debate this question... well. here's my answer... ALL OF THEM. Each of the members of DT are equally adept at playing their respective instrument (DS & JLB as well) or they wouldn't be in the band in the first place. Also, It's impossible to compare different instruments like this. Sure.. JM, and JP play strings.. but they're completely different, both in tone, and arrangement, hence.. no comparison.. were there 2 guitarists in the band.. ok.. I can see it..
Having said that.. I enjoy, and focus on, JP's playing, but that's because I'm a guitarist as well. But music.. (how many times have I said this now..) is a subjective ART FORM.. and therefore cannot be made to fit a mold that everyone agrees with.
As for who would be easiest or hardest to replace.. I think MP would be hardest.. then JM. There are plenty of really good guitarists out there.. great keyboard players abound.. singers are everywhere... but quality drummers are hard to find.. partly because I think when you're young.. most people want to be on the front of the stage.. not stuck behind a drum kit.. as for bass players.. it's really hard to find someone who can riff, and play with the technical ability of JM, and then drop into a simple (but necessary) bottom holding groove like he can.
Bottom line... I hope NONE of them leave.. but rest assured... if JP leaves.. I'll be send them a demo tape the minute I find out.. :) Then.. once I have the job.. you can all say you knew me back on the 'JAM. Course.. I'd have to let Mike Bahr have the DAT's from the soundboard.. and of course.. all Jammers would get in free to the show... and... (got ahead of myself there)...
See ya... :)

If that's the case are they going to release the cleaned up version (very likely) or the real version (not likely). I'm not climbing up on the box again, but I just hate it that they studio-ize this and release it as "live" material. It isn't live, it's studio with multiple takes. Hell, most of his vocals on the ACOS version aren't that difficult. Give me a week and I'll duplicate 'em, but forget about it live. And don't anyone get started on that "well, you've gotta expect bad nights." Of course I expect bad nights, and have heard boots of some very bad nights. However, if you have a bad night....don't release them.
Ok, I'm done. Sorry, just against my religion to lie about your material. :)

The sound quality depends alot on the media you got the recording on. His master was on DAT, which has a much higher dynamic range than analog tapes. My copy (off tree) came from a DAT but was copied for me onto a Type II cassette. If people with the DATs were complaining about distortion on the bass imagine the people who got Type IIs that were completely saturated with bass. I have portions I can barely hear due to the saturation. Remember, though, that this is _NOT_ Brian's fault in the least. It's the media's limitations. Just remember that the people who are bitchin' might have these analog copies and have a legit gripe... Adam Pye - alpine@negia.net - http://www.negia.net/~alpine - IZZC #1426

i seriously can't agree with the notion that Tate sung those parts. i just finished listening to SSM, and that is _definitely_ (IMHO) a woman singing. there's just tonal characteristics in her voice that Tate simply doesn't have. put on some good headphones and *tell* me that that is a man singing, let alone Geoff. i don't think so.
then again, everyone hears things differently. let's just say i'll be damn surprised if it turns out to be a proven fact that he sung the parts. >I was just wondering if JP's instructional vid was actually worthwhile >for those of us who don't play as articulately and as quickly as we might >wish. > >What I mean is...does he just show licks or does he actually get more >into the actual doing/practicing/techniques type stuff?
JP's video is for ANYONE!!! anyone at any level of guitar will learn from this tape. he covers stretches, warm up exercises, scale fragments, and a whole lot of other stuff i can't think of right now since i'm working too much and my brain is frying as i speak. he *is* into the actual doing/practicing/techniques, just as you ask. he runs through all the exercises slowly, totally explaining everything, then plays it at frightening speed to show you what *can* be done with them. wow. cool.
i highly recommend this video. i've only been playing the guitar for 5 years, and i'm learning *alot*.

Hi Jammers!
I just have a few things I want to say:
1. About Mike Portnoy being the second most disposable in the band- I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you there, Jeff (and I have a feeling I'm not going to be the only one). I have a strong suspicion that you are not a drummer. Since I'm not a drummer either, I can only partially fathom how unbelievable Mike is, but since you feel percussionists like him are a dime a dozen, I'm curious to know where you've heard drumming like that before. I don't know if you're familiar with Rising Power, Jeff, but that's the band that Mike was in before he went to Berklee and met the Johns. What happened to them was Mike went off to college, and they didn't even THINK about trying to replace him. So that was the end of Rising Power (and that's when he was only 17).
2. Suite Sister Mary vocals: Sorry guys, it's a woman. Not Geoff singing in falsetto, not Geoff singing with his balls cut off. It's a woman.
End of story.

I just went out to pick up a couple of CDs. I got what I thought was Rising Force and instead got "Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force - Odyssey." Are the lyrics on all of his albums this atrocious, and does he have solo albums with just instrumental work? This sounds like hair band w/ slightly more complicated guitar work.
Also picked up King Crimson's "Red," which is good so far but I haven't had time to get into it.

You guys can flame until your hearts are content. I am asbestos and the flames do not bother me at all. You'll also notice that I do not flame anyone on the jam, You ask why? I guess it just has to do with the fact that I can accept the fact that people have different viewpoints then me. I may not agree with someone on something, but that does not mean that I have to kill there family. To be quite honest I don't care if you guys flame, it just goes to show you that most of the flaming individuals are a bunch of immature baboons. Some of you think this is a contest? " Oh man I know more than you, no you don't , I do" Who cares? I know that I don't have trouble sleeping at night worrying who's going to flame me next. If Mike really is interested in subscribing, I hope he does it with a grain of salt. Dream Theater is supposed to be the reason we are all here, and I think we can all agree that they are a really cool band. Let's just realize that some of us are going to have different opinions about music. You'll all notice that several jammers have disagreed with me about QR's SSM, that's fine. My personal listening experience has been enough proof for me, plus when Geoff Tate said that he sang the parts, that kind of clinched it for me. Listen to Live crime and you'll notice that "her" voice is the same as on the album, while Geoff's has that Live sound, why you ask? It was lip synched! If you don't agree, fine.
