I have to agree with that. No one plays like Mike, first of all.
Second, any drummer adds so much character to a band, that replacing a
drummer is almost exactly like starting a new band.

That's not his fault. You just can't hear what he's doing, and how
important he really is. :)

I would have to include JM in a 4-way tie. No offense again Derek, but
he is the new guy, and as such, isn't ingrained into the workings of the
band yet. An album and a tour from now, and it'll be a 5-way tie for me.

Same with AC/DC. Now, if they had to replace Angus... (Also, don't
forget that DT once had to replace a vocalist, too. They seem to have
survived ok. :)

I don't remember hearing anybody whine about the tape tree except you.
I think people just gave their honest opinions about the sound quality.
What are we supposed to do? Lie about it? I thought the bass was a
little heavy too, but I am very thankful that you were generous enough
to distribute the show. Please reconsider.

I remember catching them on Sat. Night Live (does anybody watch that any
more?) a few weeks ago. I listened pretty carefully to the drumming and
didn't think it was anything special. Why is everyone going nuts over
Carter Beauford? It's not like he's the next Dave Weckl or anything.

I agree with you right THERE, man!!! Everybody's gonna leap to defend
his/her instrumentalist, and it's all pointless. They're all amazing,
they'd all be tough to replace, and it should be left at that. Besides,
if you're trying to answer this question, there's two things to
consider:
1) Are there a lot of instrumentalists whose technical abilities match
those of the DT member in question ?
2) How valuable is that member to DT (meaning if this member left DT,
would DT cease to exist)?
The first question could be answered by somebody familiar with the talent
pool out there. The second question could only be answered by somebody
very close to the band, someone who, say, has literally watched them put
a whole album together. I really doubt that there's anyone on this list
who can answer both parts conclusively, so this whole question should be
ignored, lest we get into debates about "Myung is more expendable than
Petrucci" or somebody asks the million-dollar question "If you were
forced to kill one of the members of DT, which one would it be and why?"
Enough said.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That reminds me of something that occurred to me about DT. You all have
probably noticed that whenever DT is involved in some public function
(magazine interview, meeting up with fans, IRC, ytsecons, etc.), there's a
really good chance that Portnoy is involved. He just seems to be more active
in that stuff than the other guys. Anyway, I just sort of get the
impression that Portnoy is more into the "band" thing than the other
guys, meaning he is focused on all aspects of the band, including
composing, touring, publicity, the whole bit, whereas the others (don't
know much about Derek, though) seem to be more interested in just the
music and performing. A post that, for me, reinforced this idea came
from some guy a few months ago who said he'd watched DT in a soundcheck
and noted that Portnoy was the one "calling the shots", meaning he was
like the taskmaster. He decided what the band would work on next, and
all that sort of thing. On top of that, we all know that Portnoy always
has a DAT recorder running during soundchecks (that's how they got the
intro for "Voices"; according to interviews, he also uses it to evaluate
his concert performances) and is probably sitting on a DT bootleg empire:).
For all we know, he might also be the one responsible for deciding each
concert's setlist, with some input from the other guys, of course.
Just a little speculation about what makes DT tick.

Agreed. I've never heard Bozzio or Bruford (heard enough about 'em from
other drummers, tho!!!) but I think Alexander, Peart, and Zonder would
all make the cut in DT. The thing is, though, Portnoy has a sort of
unique way in putting grooves together, and he's fond of cramming lots of
notes (cymbal- or drums-notes) into what could otherwise be just a
straight groove (the "Scarred" ghost-notes thing you were talking about is a
perfect example of that). That sort of thing always gets a thumbs-up from
me. I just prefer the in-your-face style that's a big part of his
playing. Subtle stuff like ghost-notes are a nice touch, but there's too
much subtle drumming out there.

Heath,
I am very postive about the shows on the 16th and 17th. I was talking to
Paul O'Neill shortly after he got confirmation on those two gigs.
Very little (if any ) ads will be done for the shows, except maybe day of
the show radio ads.
I am not sure of the prices.
There are two other show which I have not been able to confirm. These
are the Long Island shows on the 18th and 19th.
Surprise Savatage Shows (in the US !!!)
Savatage will be doing some warm up shows BEFORE going to Europe.
May 16 Danbury or Tuxedo Junct, Conneticut
May 17 at the BirchHill in Old Bridge, NJ
May 18 Long Island, NY
May 19 Long Island, NY
After the European/Japan tour Savatage should be touring the US from mid to
late summer!!!

Hi.
First post, yadayadayada [life story omitted]... Anyway, I just
finished plowing through several back issues (stupid finals), and I have
to ask a question to whomever it was whose .sig file misquoted James
LaBrie as saying, "Death is the first dancing turtle." Why did you do
that? I can't hear that line now without hearing your version of the
lyrics; you've ruined it. On the other hand, I break out laughing every
time I hear it. I don't know whether to kill you or thank you (-8
Later,
John
PS: I wonder what the odds are of getting an EoJ on my first post.

Man. Maybe I'm just really good, because the majority of Portnoy stuff
doesn't seem that hard. Only speed-wise...easy to figure it out timing wise.

Hi there,
Just few things:
- Derek plays on two songs of the Jethro Tull tribute done by Magna Carta
(new release date for Europe: June 17)
- DT will definitely NOT play on the Judas Priest tribute done by Century Media.
- The new release date, for Europe, of the Rush tribute on Magna Carta is
July 22.
That's all for now...

Message-ID: <9605100754.AA23012@krzsun.med-rz.uni-sb.de>
Hi all!
I just wanted to tell all the European (especially the German) jammers,
that Vanden Plas and Ivanhoe are playing together on June 1st in
the Kammgarn in Kaiserslautern!
I just want to give a little comment to all the posts that were
sent from Bafu and other people about how fast guitarists can play.
Is it really so important that you can play FAST? In my opinion,
a guitar player is a good guitar player when he has a nice TONE
and can play some solos, that fit into the song where they're in.
Somewhere I read that someone said that "A solo should be a song
in a song" and that's how I like it. Naturally there can be played
some fast scales in solos, that's not the point I try to make.
But there also has to be melody and that is what a solo makes
tasty and good, IMHO. At least, that's the way I play my solos. :)
That's the reason why I like JP's playing: He somehow makes it to
play fast AND with melody and he can play ALL he want. But not
in every solo I like his style of playing. The end of the 'Lie'-solo
for example just is a bunch of fast scales for me. Not more. Not much
feeling in there IMHO. Well, but that's just me.
Bye.
Bernd.

Re: To RipZero and Dave Fernquist:
I think that at least James can do a little more communicating and moving
around on stage. He's so cold. IMO he's much less of a frontman than FW's
Ray Alder. And prog or grunge, that doesn't make a difference: you have to
have someone up there that means something to the crowd. I'm not into birds
in cages, pyros or anything like that; I just expect to get more than just
music when I go to a live show (now I think that's normal). That's all.
Their music is very demanding (as a bassist, I was blasted when JM did his
tapping stuff on Metropolis), o.k., but I hope they're not too concentrated
on not having fun up there.

G.A.S. UPDATE!!!
Due to lack of participation, the first part of the G.A.S. has been
eliminated. We will now concentrate only on the "Top 10 Favorite Bands"
segment of the survey, which has generated responses from 21 'jammers (9
today!!!) to date (5/9/96).
I would greatly appreciate your participation in this, as I find it
interesting to know where the general interest of the YtseJam lies. Top 10
lists (that can include DT) can be E-mailed to:
and will be received until May 31st, at 11:59pm. Lists will be tallied and
a non-DT band will be crowned on June 1st (my wife's birthday), and
complete results will be posted on or about that day.
Current Top 5 (non-DT) as of 5/9/96, out of 105 bands/artists received:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------
1) Rush (13 votes) --> I hear August for their next LP - anyone else?
2) Queensryche (10)
3) Fates Warning (7)
4) Yes (6)
5) Superior (5)
Metallica
Extreme
Marillion, King's X, and Death are also strong contenders for a spot in the
Top 5.
22 days left before the deadline - plenty of time - I'd like to shoot for
100 participants - it's feasible, right?
So, get out and vote, you guys.
C'mon, it'll be fun!
Muchos thankos to those who have played the game already - you guys rule.
Steve from Tucson

beverage." - David Letterman
P.S. Of course, James, Mike, Derek, and the Johns are more than welcome to
participate as well. I think it would be of great interest for the 'jammers
to get an idea of what DT is listening to nowadays. Whaddaya say, guys?
