I don't think Afterlife is a mediocre song (as for SS, well...). As far
as WDAJU goes, fan interest or no, I really don't think DT would be
interested in rerecording those tracks. They seem to enjoy playing some
of them live, but not all of them, apparently, so I just don't see this
    happening at all.

Although this isn't anything we non Dream Theater members could
possibly answer accurately, I would have to agree with the Digital Man's
evaluation. Derek is a great musician, but he hasn't co-written any of the
band's released material, at least to my limited knowledge I hope this will
change when the new album is released. I hope to see all members trying
their hand at writing, singing, or even swapping instruments...

    >I would have to include JM in a 4-way tie. No offense again Derek, but
    >he is the new guy, and as such, isn't ingrained into the workings of the
    >band yet. An album and a tour from now, and it'll be a 5-way tie for me.

Thanks to Skadz for the dreamt.org account. I can now be reached at
spector@dreamt.org. Does anyone know what times the Dream Theater IRC is
    busiest?
I thought of this a few days ago... At Ytsecon, for the benefit of
those unable to attend, maybe you could set up a large TV screen connected
to an IRC, so people attending (and the band, maybe?) could be harrassed by
those of us in distant places, such as the Ohioan corn fields.

Thanks to whoever it was that posted their opinion on JP's instructional
vid. Wow...I got an EoJ for that post! Any other opinions on the JP video?

Now to join in on the "Firsts" thread...

    First vinyl:
single - "Kiss On My List" by Hall & Oates
album - Star Wars Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

    First cassette:
"The Ghost In the Machine" or some other Police album.
I can't remember because I seem to have gotten pretty much
all the Police casettes up to "Ghost" over the course of one
summer in the early 1980's. First casette could have been
            Def Leppard's "Pyromania", I don't remember

    First CD:
            "The Joshua Tree" by U2

it is with regrets that i wish to say farewell to the ytsejam.

things have just been constantly getting worse and worse in my life at school
and what not. try musically directing a show when your keyboadist calls you 3
hours before the show opens and tells you he's got tendonitis. try waking up
with this insane depressed feeling, and being hyper and trying to smile is
all you have to hide your true mind.

try dealing with 22 credits, finals, and the lsat's that i don't even want to
    take.

i mean, i'm not dead. yet. but when you get a lot of ytsejams, and all you do
is delete them, that just means that you don't get what you used to from
    them.

not that it's personal. i've had an awesome time. it's just that now i miss
    out on all of it.

if i survive finals and the lsat's, i might come back for the party, but for
now, i just need to chill.

some notes to some particular folks.

mike bahr- wanted to say thanks for the ad and wdatu cd's. they are
excellent. if you concoct any new dt things, i'd love to know about them.

digitalia, mojo, gandalf, itz; i'm hoping maybe we can still jam over the
summer. if interested, let me know. dig, i'll finish your tape in about a
couple of more weeks (our little swap), so email me with your home number,
    and we talk more.

to the folks running ytsecon 3- i've been trying to find info on where it's
at and when, but i never found it. jeff, dig (you guys are involved, right?)
please let me know what's going down. i'd like to go if i can.

bafu- you crazy guy. keep the jam hoppin funky fresh in da house. live long
    and prosper.

to anyone who cares- you are all welcome to email me with any news or
whatever (as long as it's not spam, or i'll fracture your scrotums). you
might run into me at the tori amos show in syracuse, the macintosh new music
festival, pfunk in central park, alanis, tori, and/or jethro and elp at jones
beach, and you may never know it. if you do know it, say "what up? funky
fresh in da house." and i'll respond.

and no matter how depressed i am, or whatever, with or without a jam, i still
have dt in my ears. that ain't going anywhere soon.

to anyone who doesn't care- fuck you too.

maybe i'll send a postcard. farewell, at least for now.

    godspeed,
    david the magical kobayashi

    peace out.

with all this talk about who's the easiest member of DT to replace, i
    thought i'd jump in.

    no one can be replaced.

when Kevin left,he took with him all his influence. never again will we
see a new DT song with lyrics written by Kev. Derek isn't a replacement
for Kev. he's a completely different player than him. Derek will bring
his own influences into the band.

IMO a band changes with any members that leave, no matter who they are. if
James left, the vocals would be drastically different. if Myung left,
you'd lose his playing style and his lyrics (which are my personal fav).
the same goes for Petrucci and Portnoy. it's not simply musicianship that
makes a band. they are incredible writers, and they have a chemistry
that's tough to match. when the band's line up changes, so does the
    chemistry.

i personally think that the new album will be a change from their previous
stuff. not just because they're progressing, but because they've a new
    influence in the band (Derek).

try to keep this in mind when you're deciding upon the expendability of the
    individual band members.

this is all IMHO, of course.

    >didn't think it was anything special. Why is everyone going nuts over
    >Carter Beauford? It's not like he's the next Dave Weckl or anything.

Until I'm as good as him, then I'll think that he is amazing. He plays and
looks like Dennis Chambers...kinda scary. :-)

Mike Portnoy uses the same thing over and over and over again...that's what
I've learned. More noticible on Awake, where he was on an
    end-every-fill-with-two-cymbal-crashes-instead-of-one...ex:

                    Usually you'll hear:

                    dub dub dub dub crash

                    MP on Awake:

                    dub dub dub crash crash

I can't really find a common thread such as this on I&W...but the
beat he uses for the verses in PMU and the beginning of Metropolis is the
same. And, his solo on LiT is pretty much the same thing all the way
through. That's not the kind of drum solo I like. That was just
chopschopschops and morechops. I like a complex one....where it sounds like
he has 5 and a half hands and you can't figure out what the hell is going
on. That's the good kind. Minus the beginning of the LiT solo there was
almost no rhythm in it. A drum solo in a tape of an MP clinic that I have
is great. It all has rhythm...none of it is just chops. Good schtuff.

    >"If you were
    >forced to kill one of the members of DT, which one would it be and why?"
    >Enough said.

That's the easiest question of all. Mike Portnoy, so I could replace him. :-)
But, since listening to helped my drumming so much, I'd make it quick and
    painless. ;-)

    >For all we know, he might also be the one responsible for deciding each
    >concert's setlist, with some input from the other guys, of course.
    >Just a little speculation about what makes DT tick.

I think that MP said he made the setlists somewhere. Which gives me another
reason to kill him. Why would you end a concert with Perfect Strangers?! Blech.

    >I just prefer the in-your-face style that's a big part of his
    >playing. Subtle stuff like ghost-notes are a nice touch, but there's too
    >much subtle drumming out there.

I hate to sound old fashioned, but sometimes the drummer's job is to
play behind the band. That's what I have to do in the jazz band at school. I
have no trouble with being both complex and behind the band at the same
time. Mike Portnoy's kind of a show off...in a good way of course, becauses
he is amazing, but he does show off a little.

    Argh! saw=say

About playing fast....I agree with Bernd. Fast AND melodic makes a good
    guitarist.

    >I think I'm happy you're getting out with your bullshit split speculation
    >questions. And hey, who gives a fuck who's best on his instrument? Anyway,
    >in my band, I'd never think about coming up with shit questions like these.
    >Who really cares?

    Sheesh...who pissed in YOUR coffee?

    >I think that at least James can do a little more communicating and moving

detracts from his singing in this one.

    >"Why do heavy metal guitar solos have so many notes in them? Because they're

    Hey all .........

Well, I just emptied the ytsejam error mailbox. It had about
3150 emails in it, so I basically just wasted my Friday. A few bitches,
    moans and whatnot now.

If you are going home for the summer from school and will not be checking
your email, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE unsubscribe. I don't need
100 bounces a day about exceeded mail quotas. So if you are not going
to be checking your mail over the summer, unsub before you leave.

Another thing, if you are switching accts, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
unsub the old one before you leave the service.

I may have unsubbed people who shouldn't have, but they looked like they
needed to be unsubbed from the error messages. I have a list of who I
unsubbed, so if there are any questions, just ask.

Question: Who has the mail thing on their page that sends the
mail which says (WWW Generated Email) Please Email me if this is you.

    The important part:

How to Unsub from the YTSEJAM

    mail ytsejam-request@ax.com
with the subject being exactly: asdf
and in the body saying: unsubscribe ytsejam

TO EVERYONE WHO HAS A DREAM THEATER WEB PAGE:

Please update the information on your page with the exact info on
ax.com. Please remove any references to arastar.com. I plan
on telling Ken to kill all ytsejam@arastar.com mail soon.
This info is in the FAQ, so if you have a copy of the FAQ, make
sure you update that as well.

Another note for Web People, there is no way to allow people
to subscribe from your web page. I may make something you can
link to on my site soon, but that is only because I have
    special privs on the list.

    Ok, I think that's everything.
