I stand corrected.....I never knew IM had a singer before Bruce
Dickenson....
BUT!!!
My point still stands....Iron Maiden WAS not popular with Dianno....as
the person up there just stated...(I'll cut and paste)
>A lot of my friends have not even heard Dianno

Not many people knew that...including I!
I can only think of two very sucessful bands making it with a singer
replacement after a point of success has been reached....

G.A.S. UPDATE!!!
Due to lack of participation, the first part of the G.A.S. has been
eliminated. We will now concentrate only on the "Top 10 Favorite
Bands/Artists" segment of the survey, which has generated responses from 41
'jammers to date (5/13/96).
I would greatly appreciate your participation in this, as I find it
interesting to know where the general interest of the YtseJam lies. Top 10
lists (that can include DT) can be E-mailed to:
and will be received until May 31st, at 11:59pm. Lists will be tallied and
a non-DT band/artist will be crowned on June 1st (my wife's birthday), and
complete results (ALL bands/artists received and number of votes) will be
posted on or about that day.
Current Top 5 (non-DT) as of 5/13/96, out of 144 bands/artists received:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------
1) Rush (26 votes) --> I hear August for their next LP - "Test for Echo"
2) Queensryche (25)
3) Fates Warning (16)
4) Extreme (11)
Marillion (11)
King's X, Metallica, and Yes are also strong contenders for a spot in the
Top 5.
18 days left before the deadline - plenty of time - I'd like to shoot for
100 participants (about halfway there!)- it's feasible, right?
So, get out and vote, you guys.
C'mon, it'll be fun!
Muchos thankos to those who have played the game already - you guys rule.
Steve from Tucson

beverage." - David Letterman
P.S. Of course, James, Mike, Derek, and the Johns are more than welcome to
participate as well. I think it would be of great interest for the 'jammers
to get an idea of what DT is listening to nowadays. Whaddaya say, guys?

> My vote goes to the mute, John Myung. A close second being Petrucci.
I haven't heard enough of Sherinian to make a decision about him.
I know LaBrie is an extremely talented vocalist, and for some reason, most
fans of progressive metal would rather compare him to Geoff Tate than
praise him for being so DAMN GOOD. He's very good at his respective
instrument, but I wouldn't give him high marks for versatility. I don't
think he could sing like Philip Anselmo of Pantera...well, maybe he could,
but he might really ruin his voice for the night...whereas Philip Anselmo
can growl like a demon and sing high and clear.
So if you're grading based on total abilities, I wouldn't say LaBrie is
"the best" at being a vocalist because there are several styles of vocals
I think he'd have a problem with, in rock vocals that is. I'm tempted to
say he's one of the best at being an "operatically-trained rock vocalist,"
but unfortunately he is a rock vocalist, and there are many who could sing
his style and several others.
Mike Portnoy is extremely talented. I don't know who to compare to him.
Obviously there's Neil Peart and Mark Zonder, but otherwise can you think
of anyone who could even come close to his ability? Okay, there are
probably a few who can rip through Metropolis...now, do you think they
have Portnoy's virtuosity as a rhythm section? Being able to play
something note-for-note is cool, it proves your technical ability, but can
you write like that? If you and the musician you're playing along to were
in the same room and had a cutting contest, could you keep up with them?
I'll admit that jamming to Steve Vai's "The Audience Is Listening" is fun,
but if Satan told me that the only way I could keep my soul were to beat
Steve Vai in a jamming competition, I wouldn't even plug in my guitar.
For that reason I think Portnoy ranks up among the best drummers anywhere.
Myung is in a small class of bassists who get mighty technical, like Hamm
or Sheehan. I'm not much into bass, and I wouldn't know who to compare
Myung to to see if he's the best in his field. He and Sherinian you can
basically throw out of this question for me, 'cause I got no idea what
their skills are or who to compare them to.
Then there's Petrucci. He covers all the bases. Not a lick he can't play.
I put him above many many many, and equal with few, few, few.
Ergo, I would say Portnoy is the best at his respective instrument for his
immense wingspan, followed closely by Petrucci who probably has more
equals than Portnoy on his instrument.
Below it all, I think this whole question is kind of infantile, just like
asking about the speed of guitarists. But unlike most humans who would
rather ignore this shit and pretend answers can ever be arrived at, I'll
talk about it all I damn want. De antwoorden zijn altijd al aanwezig.

Okay, keyboardists. There are THOUSANDS of classically-trained pianists in
this world. Many of them learn stuff like Chopin and have chops to blow
yer ass outta the room. Some of them even play Alkan. !!! These people are
the masters of the instrument. Sight-reading geniuses. You put any piece
of music in front of them, they can play it instantly. Then there's the
jazz pianists, who ask you to play a single note on your guitar while they
perform a solo around it, with chord changes and vocal skatting included.
For these reasons, I think any keyboardist or pianist anywhere could be
replaced. Not slamming Sherinian or Moore's abilities, they have talent, I
know this, you know this, but I don't even have to hear their best work to
know they have technical equals roaming the planet.
As for writing lyrics and actual keyboard parts to compliment a song, no
one can replace anyone because all humans are different. I didn't say
"most." I didn't say "lots of." I said ALL. Learn this fact quickly. There
are no "replacements" unless someone fills in for someone else on tour and
plays all their parts note-for-note like a machine. As far as the creative
process goes, No Mind Can Replace Your Mind.
And with that point on the table, I think the rest of the dinner looks
pretty unappetizing.

Hi all,
I believe Pat (?) was asking about what DT song you could play at a wedding.
Well, at what was gonna be my wedding (we broke up before going through with
it) I planned on having Eve played. Mind you it starts off sounding a
*little* sad, but I still think it's a great song, and one you could actually
slow dance to. Whenever I do find that special someone, I still plan on
having that played at the wedding, perhaps as *the* wedding song (may have to
do some arm twisting on that one). At any rate, best wishes!

I have many CDs above 78 minutes. I also encounter different durations depending on which CD player I use. It's also normal that different "batches" have different durations, especially if you don't go to the CD factory with a CD-R (this is the only way of being sure that ABSOLUTELY nothing will be altered during the pressing stage), but with a U-matic tape.
In fact, what the hell does EoJ stand for????????????????????????????????????

Hey now, tornados can lift trucks, etc. Just depends how big they are. But perhaps your problem with suspending disbelief stemmed from watching humans in a truck voluntarily driving within fifty feet of a swirling cone of 150mph winds tossing machinery and buildings around like toys...
Anyway, I happen to know the director, and he secretly told me that the movie is based on a FICTITIOUS story!! It isn't even SUPPOSED to be factual!! :)
My personal favorite line: "Cow!"

The Crichton/Spielberg team is not without its trademarks. Fans of ER will notice the stunning similarity between the startup-scenes of the this movie and ER. Every time someone shouts "Let's go!!" and begins running for their vehicle, you just might get a flashback of Mark Green hollering down a crowded hallway, pushing a wheelchair at breakneck speed.

I think I'm paraphrasing Painful Truth, but I could be wrong:
"Why doesn't Bob Dylan use more notes in his guitar solos? Because he can't."

Ahh...another entry from the "They_don't_look_cool_so_they_aren't_good_anymore" crowd.
I get so sick of people judging bands by their looks. Hey, if DT all decided they were tired of the whole "metal/long hair" thing, would you stop listening to them? Would they no longer be "cool" to you?
Granted, I have a sneaking suspicion this album is going be pretty mainstream, but at least wait until it comes out and then knock the music itself.
Remember - to an alien, Michael Bolton might look like a cool rock singer..... :)

I think he meant Bruce replacing Paul Dianno, not Blaze replacing Bruce. That being the case, I would *definitely* say they survived that particular transition (at least better than they did when Adrian Smith left. :))
