Ooh..I'm gonna have fun with this one....but before I do...I'm going to
clarify "survive"...taken in the literal context...I can name more than
just five bands that have "survived" after a singer change...but I don't
call breaking even on the club circuit in an indie label after being
dropped from a major 25 million deal, surviving!!

    > 1) Iron Maiden, with Bruce Dickinson

years ago....everyone knew who, and what IM was about...if you heard IM
(as a music listener, not musician) nowadays...not many people would
guess that it was still IM ( I know many of you would be able to, and you
may even have the new album on CMC records....BUT can you say that about
the passive listener??).....the Bruce Dickenson voice was too heavy an
    identifying factor!

    > 2) Genesis, W/ Phil Collins

OK...I'll give ya this one John...

    > 3) DT/ James Labrie

Dream Theater vocal sound is defined by James....a not so recent post
described the story of someone going out and getting WDADU and going 'holy
shit, when did they fire LaBrie' .... DT was NOT a label supported band in
89 when Domicrappi was aboard....I would chance a bet that of the 722
someodd subscribers, 90% of you didn't know DT till I&W...so it's like
    they never existed before 92!

    > 4) Fates Warning W/ Ray Alder

I'll give you this one too!!! BUT, many people will say FW changed with
Ray Alder at the helm...the band was a different group with Ray
singing...listen to their Greatest Hits disc...the Arch stuff is different
than the Alder stuff....and John Arch should recognize that before anyone
that the sound of the band changed after he was replaced...

    > 5) Marillion

Don't know squat about em....only heard some of Misplaced Childhood in
    your room, John...

    > These are just a few, I'm sure there are plenty more.

Like I said...yes, there are....BUT the point I was trying to make was
    this:

Music Listeners will remember the singer before anything else!! If I
played Deep Purple's, 'Slaves and Master' from 1990 (with Joe Lynn turner
singing) most people would NOT think its DP....Jesus...when I first heard
it, I thought it sounded like Old Whitesnake with Steve Perry singing....

Getting back to the point....Van Halen was, is, and always shall be about
Eddie Van Halen....the singer, yes, is important.....but not
integral....Sammy is a better singer...he has a wider range both lyrically
and physically! Van Halen was doing well with Dave, but it is fact that
Van Halen is more successful today with Sammy.....
I can't think of one group that survived for 8 years with a certain
singer...to loose the singer, and be replaced with another, only to
surpass the accomlishments of the 'old' band with the new one....

    Cya!

Does anyone out there know where Midnight of Crimson Glory is these
days. That dude kicked some butt when it came to singing. He was cool.
But.....WHERE IS HE NOW???? I checked the Crimson Glory page but it
doesn't definitely say Anyone from Florida? Supposedly there is a band
called Zen containing CG members. I know there was(is?) a band called
Crush with Jon Drennings in it. he was also an ESPN sportscaster. Ben
Jackson is in a cool band called Parish - check them out. But no
Midnight. I may have to call Gordon Elliot and tell him to find my hero.
As for Enchant, I have their CD. It's really cool. Nice vocals. Awesome
drum work. It's cool. Their song on the Yes tribute album was cool
too. Another cool band I heard recently was Ashen Dawn. Serious bass
    player. Cool band.
Some more cool bands: Ivanhoe, Kamelot (the dude sounds like Midnight),
Galactic Cowboys, Z Lot Z, Vanden Plas, Edwin Dare (real cool),
    Nevermore, and Royal Hunt.

There's been talk lately of shredding and stuff like that. I'd like to clue
y'all in to some of recent discoveries:

A 2 CD bluegrass sampler - Yes. Bluegrass. These guys fuckin' WAIL!!!! As
far as pure speed (notes per second, insane tempos) goes, this is another
    place where it's at.
While some of it can get kinda hokey at times, there are some real wailin'
instrumentals. Bluegrass is a form of music indegeneous to America. From
bluegrass, we get country. Rock n roll got it's start by mixing up blues,
country and American folk music. This is where it all began!

Django Reinhardt - I can't stop listening to this guy! He lost the use of
his ring finger and his pinkie, so he's only using two fingers to play some
really fast, jazzy lines and he even plays some chords! He plays fast, he
plays a lot of notes, but they're all the right notes. :)

Neil Gallop recommended Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire. So, Neil, if
you're reading this, take delight in the fact that I went out and bought it.
:) All you Dixie Dregs fans take note, MO featured Jerry Goodman on violin.

That's all for now. I've been on a horizon expanding kick lately. Don't get
me wrong, I still love progressive-metal, but I think I'm into enough rock
bands... While progressive rock is quite expansive, there's a lot more you
can do with 12 notes and a bunch of rules you don't necessarily have to
    follow.

I did it!! I finally Ytsefied someone with a great deal of sucess!!!! One
of my best friends had his CDs were stolen recently, and he's built up a
small library of 15 CDs again. It didn't take long for him to get burnt out
on those 15 CDs. So for his birthday, I bought him I&W and Awake. I thought
he was a perfect candidate for Ytsefication. He's a big Rush, Yes,
Metallica, Megadeth and Queensryche fan, and he just loves music in general.

I spoke to him recently, and he's listening to I&W and Awake non-stop! He's
got DT on the brain big-time. And if he ever gets off his ass and gets some
net access, he'll be one of us.. Muhahahahahahahahaha

To contradict some of the previous CD length posts, Metallica's new
album, "Load," will last 79 minutes--the average song being 5:39 long.
Also, the remastered version of Black Sabbath's "Live Evil" is 80:01, and my

    Hey, 'jammers.

I have received here at the home office in Tucson, Arizona, several entries
that included just 5 bands or artists.

First of all, I'd just like to say to those persons "Muchos Thankos for
    your participation in the G.A.S."
I have recorded the entries, but, as the survey instructions pointed out, I
need your Top TEN favorite bands/artists.
I apologize if my instructions were not clear on that matter. I realize
that the G.A.S. Update includes a Top FIVE and that may have confused some
people. Again, I need Top TEN lists, please.

    Thanks again for your participation,

    Steve from Tucson

19 shopping days until the deadline and I've received entries from 39
'jammers, as of 5/12/96. I'd still like to reach 100 'jammers before
months-end, so Rock the Vote, eh? I'll post another G.A.S. Update on the
night of the 13th - um, yeah, tomorrow night.

    >world!

Sorry, GHS Rocker, I'm going to have to disagree with your opinion here.
I don't know which stations you listen to, but I would never expect to hear
    "Another
Day", or any other DT song for that matter, on 92.3, 93.1, 96.5, 104.7,
    106.5,etc. If
that particular song were to receive airplay, I would expect it (in order of
    most likely
to least likely): 106.9, 97.5, 98.5, 100.7, and 107.9. Notice that some of
    these
stations had different formats at the time, now quite of a few of them have an
    "alternative" focus.
Another interesting point was brought up: the other 2 aforementioned
singles were also on movie soundtracks. "Kiss From A Rose (KFAR)" was on
Batman Forever, and I think you're also referring to The Bodyguard soundtrack.
    I
am as much of fan of Seal as I am DT (if not more). Yes, "KFAR" was overplayed,

but IMHO, it's a good song. It was one of my favorite songs way before I even
knew it was on the Batman Forever soundtrack, and I still like it. Also, IMHO,
    I
think Seal put on a better show at the Nautica last summer then when I saw
DT on the "Music In Progress" tour in 1993. Flamer disclaimer: remember, this
is my opinion, and if you don't like it...tough salami. Anyway, the 2 songs had
the luxury of receiving video (i.e. the movie itself, trailers, etc.) in
    addition to
radio airplay. I think you'll agree that "KFAR" was somewhat justified in its
excessive airplay when compared with box office receipts for the movie itself.
If DT could get on an upcoming movie soundtrack in conjunction with a single
from the forthcoming album, it would be more productive than petitions, Dial
    MTV,
etc. I still think DT would make and excellent choice for a Jackie Chan or
cult following-type movie: the upcoming Crow sequel, for example. So,
to sum it up, there are certain externalities involved with what is (and isn't)
    played
on the radio. BTW, I hope I sound of favorable disposition: you're the first
'Jammer I met in person, and I believe in veneration for elders :)

I have a Branford Marsalis CD that is 77 minutes long. It has 6 tracks, and
    each is
separate, i.e. you can use random play or program particular tracks. I'm going
    to
do some research on this topic; someone mentioned that strictly-music-CDs could
hold up to 80 minutes. I think a couple of my box sets could support this
    statement.

    >So, would you recommend getting Crash by DMB? I almost bought it today...

Don't bother: it will be in the record clubs before you know it. I would
    recommend
obtaining some legitimate (through other DMB-fans on the Internet) bootlegs of
    an
entire show. I was fortunate to be on the New Year's Eve tape tree, and it just
    kills.
Quite a few songs from the new album are on it, in fact. What the hey- if you

Sheesh. Let the music do the talking. June 4 for the U.S. June 3 everywhere

Most definitely darn tootin' CDs can be longer than 75 minutes. I know of
one specifically (The Secret Garden Broadway cast album) That is 77 minutes,
and I think that I've got one that measures at over 80 minutes somewhere.

The 75 minutes os probably a reliability issue, in that the standard madium
is only quality controlled to a certain length, and if you start recording
farther around the outside edge (CDs start in the center and work outwards,
right?) there may be problems. Just like old Single sided 5.25" disks can
be double sided, excepting QC on them, and that the 486 chips without FPUs
are just 486 chips with faulty FPUs so they disable them.

Anyone know what the REAL, all-time, every possible second you can cram on
the platter limit of a CD is ?

    Hello 'jamanoids.

Storm Warning! Prepare to be swept from your feet!

Anyone who's ever liked Helloween, Gamma Ray, Yngwie or Angra
or any neoclassical or melodic speed metal, be sure not to miss
     S T R A T O V A R I U S !!!!

I've listened the band for years and I've never been a real fan
of theirs before, but as I saw them live last Friday, they
kicked ass like nothing I've ever heard before (w/ the possible
exception of DT and Queensryche, but they're gods, so they
don't count...). Especially German jammers, take note!!!

The band introduced their new members, Jens Johansson (yep, the
same guy who keyed for Yngwie back in his heyday) and ex-Rage,
ex-Running Wild drummer (incredible kicking machine) Joerg
Michael. Their bassist Jari Kainulainen and guitarist Timo
Tolkki are good enough to qualify in anyone's neoclassical
guitar heroes list. And the vocalist, Timo Kotipelto reminds
me of Michael Kiske but has a little higher vocal range.

Anyone who's interested about them, contact me for trades
or CDs. I assure you, you've never heard anything like them
before. Their new CD "Episode" gets my vote for the best CD
     of '96 this far.

Ok, calm down, jackass! And so I will.

To Mike Bahr: I'll take one of those kittens off your hands for a copy
of Precious Things... (Hmmm... Love animals.... love DT... can't lose :)

About the End of Jam thing. I think it's all just a subconcious attemp
to be more like Bafu. No one wanted one until Bafu was getting one every
three posts, and now everyone rejoices just because their post was at the
end. Hmmm... wonder what would happen if Bafu started to get the first
post every 'jam... Geez... that's not just a race to fill the buffer,
that's a race against RESPONSE at IBMMAIL! :)

    >during the guessing period for mike's secret, someone mentioned a studio

    >Ones..., and OaMoT. now _that_ could conceivably happen, though still
    >not likely.

That's just your opinion, Keith. Nothing more.
Status and After are at least as good as LFaGA. That's just my opinion.
    Nothing more.
    Ya see?
    See ya.
