A friend of mine is going to interview the Galactic Cowboys in about 10
days' time. He doesn't really know much about them, and neither do I. If you
have any *useful* suggestions for questions (preferably questions that will
make it appear as if he's a pro :-) ) please mail them to me personally.

Why do I prefer Van Hagar?
Well, Not only do I prefer Sammy's vocals, but I like the guitar tone Eddie
has been using since 5150. I can recognize it within 3 seconds. When I
first Humans Being (and Poundcake and whatever the 1st single was from
Balance) I missed the announcer's spiel, but I still recognized it, even
without vocals. I just love that Eddie sound. :)
Firsts:
Groovic: Never had it, never will.
Magnetia: Well, I honestly think my 1st tape was Chuck Mangione, that
cheesy trumpet player. But I wa about 5 at the time, so what did I know?
:) As far as the 1st ones I picked out in a record store, I thin it was a
trio, of VH 1984, VH 5150 and Foreigner 4 (I thought the trio of numbered
albums was cool, and I ended up only ever listening to the 3rd one once maybe)
Optica: Van Halen, OU812. Followed by Vh the album, WOmen & Children 1st,
Diver Down. Yes, Van Halen was my first favorite group, but Queen was the
first group I ever went out and explicitly quested for all their releases
until I had them (and I do, all 16 or so albums, from Queen to Made in Heaven)
Weddings: Lifting Shadows and Eve (Studio) 'Nuff said. Cept maybe Ooh Ah Mot.
Bafu on Replacing Keyboardists:
While there can be a great many people who are _technical_ masters, and can
play a piece note-for-note, you seem to be leaving out the element of style
that transcends one's ability to play the notes as written. I'm sure you
know of it in the guitar field, and it certainly exists in the keyboard
field. I can tell the difference between Kevin playing a Kevin solo and
Derek doing the same. I prefer Patic Moraz's keyboards in Yes to Wakeman's
or Emerson's in ELP. They are probably all technically equivalent, but I
prefer Moraz's style.
So, please don't say that keyboardists are easily replaceable because there
are a great number of technical masters out there. While I think Derek is a
great person and fits well with the band, I think DT lost something when
they lost Kevin (Somewhere during the I & W tour is when he was lost,
really. He certainly was gone by the recording of Awake) that cannot be
replaced.
These ramblings aside, I agree that Derek is probably the easiest to
replace, simply because he is the newest member, and I agree that Portnoy
would be the most difficult, as he seesms to be the heartbeat personality of
the band, the Eddie Van Halen of Dream Theater (Hey, his dad came up with
the name, and he's the one with the tattoos to permanently mark him)
it's f'ing 5:30 in the morning, and I can't sleep. I hate stress.

H ey John!
>EH!(Actually we Newfoundlanders use (What are ya at!))
>I'm trying to find out how many Jammers are actually from Canada. Skadz, can you give me any idea in numbers. Mariano Stalker (Lugie or Booger on IRC), i know of you , we talked briefly on the IRC jam. You,me and James LaBrie can't be the only Canadian connection to Dream Theater.
Actually, I'm sure that there are several of us about. (or is
that "aboot"?) I've been so busy lately, that I have had been somewhat
remiss about reading the jam over the last week. (Suddenly, a
thundering chorus of jeers erupts from the assembled onlookers)
I don't know how many of us are in Perma-lurk mode, taking in
the assorted Bafuvian quips of wisdom, but I would be very curious to
find out whether there are any other Jammers in the Toronto area. In
particular, it would be useful to learn of places people have gone to
locate DT collectibles such as CD singles with alternative versions or
demos of songs. I have the TSM and Lie singles and they are great.
BTW, am I the only one here who thinks TLF should have been on
I&W rather than Another Day? I love that song, especially on I&W Live
in Tokyo. The way the chords are voiced in the intro sets me to mind
of a stream running over rocks; highly emotive.
Speaking of DT, I agree that I would prefer to see them play
here as a headliner as opposed to opening for Rush. They would almost
certainly be limited to 1 hour maximum which would only leave time for
the most frequently played Canadian tracks (PMU, TTT, MET 1, UAGM,
CIAW, AMBI, ACOS). They deserve a two hour appearance where they can
truly shine.
To all of my south of the border comrades (oops! Wrong word to
use there... how about compatriates), how do the instrumentals like
Erotomania go over live? I have always envisioned the standard DT
crowd as being filled with totally loyal fans rather than
experimenters and would suspect that they would love hearing the
instrumentals. Personally, I like the overall mood of Erotomania
better, but our namesake, Ytsejam, just cooks. Kevin's keys just smoke
on that track. If only we could replace all of CDs vocals on that disc
with James. (sigh)
>Also, would anyone DUB the Live in Tokyo video for me?PLEASE ;-}
I might be able to do something like that for you. I have a
hard time getting access to a second HIFI machine, but the audio
portion would be easy. Contact me via e-mail if you want to discuss
this further.
Incidentally, many Americans may not realize how hard it is to
get the LIT video in Canada. It is not generally available as a
stocked item. I had to special order it from HMV and it finally wound
up costing me $25.98 Canadian. Ouch! On the other hand, it IS worth
every penny. Does anyone know if it is available on Laserdisc?
Lastly, as much as I enjoy ACOS (in both its incarnations
(thanks Mike Bahr!)), I really am not thrilled with the big medley. It
just isn't their sound. I would much rather have had the rest of ACOS
contain live versions of tracks from the studio albums or rare gems. I
must say that FFAF/LLB rocks on that disc and I like PS a fair bit as
well, although I have never been a hardcore Deep Purple fan.
Well, I'm getting rather longwinded here and should signoff.
All my best to all of you and with remember, with respect to flaming,
that the third dance "will only take place when the struggle between
our children has ended". Keep in mind that we represent DT fans
worldwide and the band may be judged based on its listeners. Let's set
the best example we can.
Cheers,
Rick

That's a great point. I guess I got so caught up in posting about playing
fast that I sounded like just another speed freak. That's one of the reasons
why I like John Petrucci so much. I is so well-versed in many types of music
that it's unpredictable. You know you're going to get the bursts of
million-notes-a-second runs, but you'll never know what style he'll play.
It's not always in A or E-minor like a lot of the other flashy guitarists.
Speaking of which, has anyone ever heard of Michael Angelo (great name huh?)?
He did some instructional stuff and billed himself as the fastest player in
the world. He was extremely fast and was pretty much a one-trick pony, but
man was he great to watch!

All right, I will join the fray...
1st 8-Track: Soundtrack from Star Wars 1st Album: Kiss - Love Gun 1st Cassette: Ratt - Out of the Cellar (I think) 1st CD: Triumph - Allied Forces 1st Concert: Triumph/Survivor/Harlequin (the Canadian Invasion, as it was billed)
By the way, have any of you Canadian jammers, or for that matter, anyone on the 'Jam, heard of this band Harlequin. I thought they were pretty good, but have never been able to find anything by them. Just trying to satisfy some long overdue curiosity.

Hello everyone, it's BABS (haven't done that in a while). Alright, let's admit it, there aren't any DT love songs out there. Except for their cover of Rush's Tears, but that song is rather sad (although it's one of my fav. Rush tunes). Look at it this way, there's a new release due out by Fall. So maybe they will put something on there that would work.
Eve would be a good one, if nothing else???????

Picasso #3 is the guitar that John Petrucci has at his own specs... (the above magazine was from November 1994, when they had just released the album... thus no #3 and #4)... Picasso #1 and #2 were both made basically BY Ibanez, #2 was a slight modification on #1... and then, on #3, John says that he has the controls exactly where he wanted them... Also, on the eh.... what was it.... January 1996 issue, on Petrucci's interview, they say he took the Triaxis preamps totally out of his setup, and uses the mesa mkIIC+ head, and also has a Dual Rectifier in there, although they think it's only used as backup.....

The first singer that Maiden released a record with though is Paul Dianno, and they definitely had a different sound with him. Whether he's better or worse than Bruce is a matter of opinion. Hiya, The new Joe Elliot sound is actually the voice Elliot was born with. All of the old Def Lep albums were EXTREMELY overproduced. The reason Joe sounds different is that he doesn't have like 1,345,955 tracks of backing vocals of himself and other singers. I've never really liked Def Lep all that much (never bought an album, probably never will) but I do like the new single "All this Time (?). Maybe the boys grew out of the crotch-rock stage.
Does anyone know what Sabastian Bach's connection with DT is? Has DT ever toured with Skid Row? If you havn't checked out Subhuman Race I'd highly suggest it. It's definately NOT the Skid's old glam sound (I detest glam) It's one of those few CD's where every song just kicks ass. I bought album because I heard the song "Into Another" on the radio and I thought it was a prog band with no keys. Check it out, good stuff. Bach is a great vocalist: "Give me somethin' that I fe-e-e-e-al, to be something that is re-e-e-eal! :-)
