I've been listening to other things besides Superior (but only under
    duress :)):

Glass Hammer, PERELANDRA: Good CD in the art-rock sphere of prog.
Sounds like Yes in places. The only weak link are the vocals, which
sound a bit threadbare in spots, but this is a minor quibble. Glass
Hammer are, to no-one's surprise, King's X and DT fans themselves, and
this CD is spiritual in a C S Lewis kinda way. Gee, who'd'a thunk it?
:) Glass Hammer will be playing at 'my' convention, Dragon*Con, here
in Atlanta June 21st, I think.

Ozric Tentacles: JURASSIC SHIFT and ARBORESCENCE.
Both great CDs from this remarkable band. I'm so glad I discovered
them. Spacey, tripped-out all-instrumental tapestries of sound, makes
GREAT party background music and will have 'em asking "Wow, who IS
    that? That's cool!"

Aside to Skadz: Bonedance is playing at 'my' convention (see above)
on Wed. night -- and I think I have THE videotape on the way to me
    now. RAHHHHHHHH!

Speaking of bands playing, we've got GWAR playing late Saturday night
in the hotel (they'll NEVER forgive us, which is okay because we're
not gonna be back there), several local and regional bands including
(RAHH) Bonedance, and Charlie, Frank and Scott from Anthrax dropping
by at some point before their show here in town (just arranged in
email). No, this isn't a music convention; you oughtta see our author
and comics guests. :) http://www.dragoncon.org or

C'mon, that's easy. Soundgarden released a special version of "Badmotorfinger" with a bonus disc in conjunction with their first Lollapalooza appearance: that

bonus disc, or SOMMS as it came to be known, was what it was called. That was the first 2-CD in a single-jewel-box for me: efficiency at its best.

    >Here's an even better question: Why is a box of Preparation H so clearly marked >"Do Not Take Orally"? Was someone really that dumb?

What about: "Do Not Take _Aurally_"?

    >This I just heard on WYSP in Phila.: >"Due to a massive number of requests, here is 'Ear Candy' by King's X..." >(Or something like that) Anyway, they actually played a KX tune! >Congrats fans! You made a dent in corporate radio!

YES! The revolution has just begun...BTW, Phillyjammers, Rollins Band is playing the Trocadero on May 27. Lucky East Coasters...

    >PS Notice how this manages to afflict only the males of the 'jam?

Let the afflicted males speak for themselves: even the Mads of Deep 13 have got nothing on me.

    >I wish I could get a hold of some cool DMB boots that don't cost an >arm and a leg!!!

Hey Doug, if you want some DMB boots, e-mail me privately. All of mine are from tape trees or trades.

    >> Who's the greatest mudskipper of them all? >Muddy Mudskipper, of course.

    Ya lousy bum!!!

    >Why are some of you so interested in set lists from various concerts? Will you >not go see the band if you don't like what they're playing? Does it have to do >with bootlegs? Is it just a plain general interest? Help me here. People ask >what setlists consisted of and I'm not understanding the gain. Thanks!

If one is a fan of "jam bands", i.e. Blues Traveler, DMB, Phish, etc. each show is considered a one-time "performance", and no two shows are alike. Fans of the aforementioned bands trade their boots freely, sharing and enjoying as much of the music as possible. On the opposite end of the spectrum, some bands play the "same" exact show night after night, and if that was the case, I could understand if one didn't want to duplicate a show they already had.

    > Do half the people on the jam completely not notice that we >are no longer on arastar.com?

Ford Arastar: the new minivan for Dream Theater enthusiasts. Comes standard with Ibanez anti-lock brakes, Tama sparkplugs, Mesa/Boogie tires, Roland shocks, and Prism stereo system. Big Ass ham optional.

Machine is actually my least favorite of the three GC albums. I really like the first two so that is not an insult to MF in any way. MF is good in my opinion although it took a few listens to get into some of the songs. I really have a hard time choosing which one I like best betwwen their s/t and Space in your Face. "I'm not Amused," "Why Can't You believe in Me," and "Speak to Me," are my favorite songs from the s/t. "Mrs. Leslie," " No Problemss." and "If I were a Killer" are my faves from SinYF. Both CDs come highly recommended. The s/t is found in local shops down here for $7.99.

On a different subject, I keep hearing rave reviews on Superior. Where can I get a copy?

    Thanks

They ("Galactic Cowboys" & "Space In Your Face") compare very nicely. I'd recommend starting with the first (respectively). This is a great band that needs our support! I've seen both disks in the $4.99 bin at Best Buy; a fookin' steal!

Okay, we're going to try this again - for some reason the actual Top 5 from the last G.A.S. Update (Ytsejam #1553) was completely omitted. What's going on there at Ytsejam Headquarters? Anyway, here we go again.

    G.A.S. HALFWAY POINT UPDATE!!!

We are now halfway through the month of May, and the number of G.A.S. participants has reached 57! We're right on pace for the goal of 100 'jammers. For those of you who haven't yet participated, I would greatly appreciate your joining forces in this, as I find it interesting to know where the general interest of the YtseJam as a whole lies. Top 10 lists (that can include DT) can be E-mailed to:

    syoung@primenet.com

and will be received until May 31st, at 11:59pm. Lists will be tallied and a non-DT band/artist will be crowned on June 1st (my wife's birthday), and complete results (ALL bands/artists received and number of votes) will be posted on or about that day.

REMINDER: Please send all entries in a 10-band format. I've been getting FIVES and I got another entry with ONE vote. I'm not going to name names on that one. We'll just say Carlo D. No, let's make that C. D'Angelo. Anyway, let's stick to the format, eh? BTW, Carlo, your vote for Yoko Ono was duly noted and recorded. :) Also, I still need to hear from Bogie and Adam Cook - you guys only left me five bands to work with - help!

    ------------------------------

Extreme, King's X, Marillion, Savatage (3 votes today), and Shadow Gallery are also strong contenders for a spot in the Top 5.

Rush and QR have been 1 or 2 votes apart since this thing started, though Rush has never trailed.

15 days left before the deadline - plenty of time - We're still shooting for 100 participants (we're halfway there!) So, get out and vote, you guys. C'mon, it'll be fun! Muchos thankos to those who have played the game already - you guys rule.

    Hi there, Ytsejammers!

There will be a Bospop festival again this year. It will be TWO days long, on July 12th and July 13th. Tickets cost Hfl 75 for both days, 37.50 for just the first, 47.50 for just the second. Dream Theater performed last year. The atmosphere is great. A nice festival. This year's line-up includes:

Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Joe Satriani, The Gathering, Tyketto, and a shitload of smaller bands. The (Dutch) info telephone number is 0495-536800. Maybe I'll see some of you there...

Oh yeah. On the Steve Vai website is says he'll be playing a gig on Z-Rock on May 24th. I guess that's a US radio station. Will anyone be taping it? And, if so, could someone contact me for a swap of some sort?

And, FOR GOD'S SAKE CAN SOMEONE MAKE SURE THAT "MAIL ITEM FORWARDED" MESSAGE DOESN'T APPEAR ON THE JAM ANYMORE?!?!?

    Hey,

I missed 2 days on the 'Jam and I haven't had time to catch up because of that damn riddle about the words that end in "Gry". Somebody please tell me the answer. (This post is long, you may want to skip it.)

If the answer to the riddle has already been posted, I apologize in advance for the length of this post. I'm just going nuts. I know it's a trick question, it has to be. Damn it.

My opinions on things that have been raised here on the 'Jam:

    1. GEOFF TATE DOES NOT SING THE PARTS OF MARY ON SSM.

If we can't come to a decision on this issue, let's just put it to a vote.

    2. My first L.P.: "Bridge Over Troubled Water" -Simon & Garfunkel My First Cassette: Men At Work "Business as Usual" My First CD: Britny Fox "Boys in Heat" (I was in a phase)

    3. Never tell a Vorlon, "Up Yours!" (I know this hasn't been mentioned on the 'Jam, but Craig Newmeyer will get a kick out of it. He'll also get a kick out of seeing his name, Craig Newmeyer, appear twice in my post.

    4. Marillion, is a very cool group. I do, however, favor the Fish years over the Steve Hogarth, even though I first heard Marilloin after Hogarth took over the position. "Misplaced Childhood" is a great album. My roomate Doug, is partial to "Besides Themselves" is his fave, and it's still available in the U.S. as an Import.

    5. Bafu Vai. (Nothin' in particular, I just have never address the great Bafu Vai in one of my few and far between posts.)

    6. I have no F**king idea what the "Secret" may be. (Again, if this has been mention on a previous jam that I have not read, I apologize. Please, enjoy the rest of this post for it's entertainment value.)

Ok. This part is excessive, but I've become obsessed with this riddle, somebody please clue me in:

Aside from "angry" and "hungry" and words derived therefrom, there is only one word ending with "-gry" in Webster's Third Unabridged: "aggry." However, this word is defective in that it is part of a phrase "aggry beads." The OED's usage examples all talk about "aggry beads."
