It hit the airwaves here last night. It is VERY commercial-sounding (what
else did we expect?), but it also incredibly catchy and I like it a lot :-)

I went to the record store yesterday, and while I was there, I perused the
"music videos" section. They didn't have the STP video I was looking for,
but they had 2 (count 'em, two) copies of I&W- Live In Tokyo. This was
the official video put out by ATCO a few years back. Anyway, I know some
of you have yet to see this video, so I grabbed one. I've already got it, and
I'm selling it to the deprived 'Jammer who hasn't experienced this audio and
video extravaganza. All I'm asking for is the price of the video and shipping.
Also, I'd prefer to sell it to someone who has a good copy of the Birch Hill
    show,
who also has a good tape deck (at least Dolby C). If interested, e-mail me
privately, and we'll work something out.

                                                    Sincerely,

                                                    G. Jack Thetgyi

I just got 10 cd's from Columbia House in the introductory offer
(two went to a friend). All 8 of these were new to me that had been talked
about on the jam one time or another. The Fates Warning will grow on me,
and I haven't listened to all of them. DMB seems pretty good too.
What I am blown away by is Death "Symbolic". I think this is the
best cd I have got in a while. My question is: Why is their a "Parental
Advisory - Explicit lyrics"?? There isn't a bad word on the whole cd, or
even in the liner notes. Could this possibly been put here to sell more
copies?? Also, join the fan club and get an autgraphed picture of each band
memeber!! Too bad Pantera doesn't do this :)

Someone said that the new Metallica "Until it sleeps" is
progressive. I heard it, and hated it. If this is prog, then it is REALLY
    SHITTY progressive.

Personally, I think that the Avalanche are a far superior team to
the Wings. The avalanche are *so* explosive, and I can't wait to see them
knock the whole Wings team on their ass. But still, go Leafs!!

Just thoughtyou would all be interested in this....in the latest issue of The
Island Ear there is a "look back at music on Long Island". It has little
articles on Billy Joel, Joe Satriani and (drum roll please) Dream Theater. The
DT part is the smallest of all the articles in this feature, and I think it
might have been cut out of a prior interview. Anyway here it is:

    -------
Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy, Dec. '94-

Island Ear: What main goal do you hope to achieve as a band?

MP: [pauses] To be on the cover of The Island Ear, so our parents will finally
    think we're legit!
    --------

Well, thats it. I was disappointed by it, when I picked up the paper I thought
it might be something larger. Anyone who has acess to this paper, its the one
    with Soundgarden on the cover.

I hate to break the bubble that you look at music through, Wedge....
but Metallica has been involved in trends since Justice and maybe
    before...(but I never really followed them b4....
I COULD HAVE predicted that they would cut their hair 3 years ago....and
I probably could have wrote a bunch of tunes and said 'this is what new
Metallica is gonna sound like." Metallica has become the most
predicatable group ever...and It's actually kind of ironic...cause,
everytime the group wins awards....you see Lars Ulrich come to accept the
award and waste 10 minutes on how they struggled for years and no one
recognized their musical integrity...and now finally they are
accepted...(and the funny thing, is that they had to sell their souls in
order to get recognized for their integrity (which really doesn't exist))

Uh, oh. Last night I saw something that almost made me want to commit

DT, with songs from the radio and what not. There is a lot of
alternative on the tape, so needless to say, I haven't heard it in a

yep, you guessed it, DT was spelled "Dream Theatre." AAAAARGGGHH!!!!

Shit! Somehow I got switched over to the Metallica/Hockey mailing list.
I used to be on a Dream Theater list, but something strange happened.

Sure, how 'bout this - Take this crap to the

At least most of you guys were thoughtful enough to include "NDTC" in
your header, but really, what does Metallica have to do with Dream
Theater? Yea, I know DT covered one of their songs, and part of PMU
has a dino-stomp-kinda-groove going for awhile, but many of us here
can't stand Metallica and don't want to know about their single.

OK, I guess I'm on the rag today or something - just waiting for the
new DT CD and more DTC!

    Hey all ....

The new Metallica is alright. I just hear them holding back
way too much in parts. I mean I can totally see them breaking out
in to some amazing heavy stuff at points in the song and they just
don't. I really think they are targetting the radio now instead of
the fans who have been with them for 10 years and more. A friend said
something to me that scared the shit out of me. He said he heard the
album was supposedly "grungy." This is even scarier. I dunno, I just
wanna hear AJFA or MoP again, instead of the stuff from the black
album, but I just guess that might not be possible anymore. Well,
two more weeks and we find out.

Okay, we're going to try this again - for some reason the actual Top 5 from the last G.A.S. Update (Ytsejam #1556) was completely omitted...AGAIN!!! What's going on there at Ytsejam Headquarters? C'mon, give me a hand here! Can anyone tell me why this is happening? Anyway, here we go again, AGAIN!

    G.A.S. UPDATE!!!

We are now more than halfway through the month of May, and the number of G.A.S. participants has reached 61! We're right on pace for the goal of 100 'jammers. For those of you who haven't yet participated, I would greatly appreciate your joining forces in this, as I find it interesting to know where the general interest of the YtseJam as a whole lies. Top 10 lists (that can include DT) can be E-mailed to:

    syoung@primenet.com

and will be received until May 31st, at 11:59pm. Lists will be tallied and a non-DT band/artist will be crowned on June 1st (my wife's birthday), and complete results (ALL bands/artists received and number of votes) will be posted on or about that day.

ATTENTION!!!!!: Please send all entries in a 10-band format. I've been getting FIVES and a couple with ONE vote. Also, I STILL need to hear from BOGIE and ADAM COOK - you guys only left me five bands to work with - help!

    ------------------------------

Current Top 5 (non-DT) as of 5/18/96, out of 186 bands/artists received: 1) Rush (35 votes) -> It's August for their next LP - "Test for Echo"!!! 2) Queensryche (34) 3) Fates Warning (24) 4) King's X (15) -> (3 votes in the last count) New CD out next week!!! Metallica (15) -> Anyone got their Lollapalooza tickets for Tucson yet?

Extreme, Yes, Marillion, Savatage, and Shadow Gallery are also strong contenders for a spot in the Top 5.

Rush and QR have been 1 or 2 votes apart since this thing started, though Rush has never been in second place.

13 days left before the deadline - plenty of time - We're still shooting for 100 participants (we're well more than halfway there!) So, get out and vote, you guys. C'mon, it'll be fun! Muchos thankos to those who have played the game already - you guys rule.

hey, i'm the one who said the new metallica single would hit on the 27th. i didn't mean that you wouldn't hear it before then. what i meant was that it should be playing really heavily by then, since the 27th is the official add date for the single, so their record company will be pushing and promoting with the radio stations to get it on the airwaves by that date. just thought i'd clear that up. so, in other words, if you haven't heard the new song yet (and some of you have), you will be soon. i haven't heard it yet myself. i'm curious to hear it, especially after seeing their new haircuts and james hetfield's 90210-esque sideburns. yuck.

(I've been using my father's e-mail address.) If anyone could fill me in on the forthcoming album, the DT tribute we we're working on or anything else, I'd appreciate it. I'll be going to college in Boston in the fall, so anyone from that area (especially musicians), I'd like to here from you. Also, I might be interested in the Ytsecon. my first LP: Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet (no apologies, flame me as much as you want) first CD: Poison Look What the Cat Dragged In (same as above, this was a gift, though) first CD I bought for myself: I think it was Kiss Alive! (this inspired me to pick up the guitar) first concert: Aerosmith Philadephia September '93 first DT CD (was this part of the thread?): I & W (bought in '93 after listening to a my friend's for months) first (only to date) DT concert: Birch Hill, Old Bridge, NJ, 12-95 (I had to use my friend's driver's license, really annoyed me, but since I'm 18 now, I guess I'm "old enough" to go there... I'd like to see Savatage play there this summer.)

I don't post much, but I've been on the list for years, and like lurking to get info on new bands. This time my goal was Enchant, since they seem to be enjoyoed by everyone here. I went to Best Buy, and no luck (they're not even listed on their lookup system :(. So I then went to Media Play. I was shocked to find that Enchant even had their own divider in the music section. However, there was only one CD. I grabbed it, and looked at the back and noticed that the jewel case was cracked, and a chunk of the plastic was missing. No problem, I just asked if I could get a new jewel case and they took one out of a pack and gave it to me. Got into my car, anxious to listen to the CD, but when I took it out, not only was the CD case cracked, but so was the CD itself :( Has anyone else had trouble with this? Both my Shadow Gallery *and* Enchant CD cases have been cracked at the store (I get them replaced, but why is it that the Magna Carta albums are in such bad shape?). I now have to wait until Media Play gets in another shipment to hear Enchant... That really sucks :( On a(nother?) non-DT related note, I was just curious if anyone has Dennis McCarthy's CD for the TV-movie "V: THe Final Battle". I know it was up for some awards at the time, and I really really want this CD, but I can't find it anywhere (dont' even know if it's still being produced...) If anyone has any info on this, I'd realy appreciate it if you could mail me. As for the DT Secret, has that been let out yet? I skipped a few 'Jams and havn't seen any mention of it... If so, I want to know what it was(is?)! Mail me :) Chris
