    Idiots.

In the past, we've been successful in defending DT against
the infidels. Now that "Mindcrimer" is on the scene, that's
changing. I think I'll just stay out of it unless someone
says something really inane. Kasia is a fool, anyway.
Oh well, let them live their little illusions...

    >On the Metallica subject.....I won't say anything until I hear the new music.

That's all I'm asking of the other 'Jammers. I don't expect or want everyone to
like it, but at least listen to the entire album first, with an open mind.
    Then,
    criticize all you want.

    > My reference to them cutting their hair is in reference to my feeling
    >that they cut their hair to 'jump on the bandwagon' so -to-speak....
    > I find that many bands nowadays are forced to cut their hair to remain
    >viable...because if you have long hair, your considered non-alternative,
    >non-grunge, or worse yet.....retro...
    > Im not concerning myself with style having anything to do with music...I
    >am only pointing out that it was a very bad time for those guys to shed
    >the locks if they didn't want to be viewed as trendy...

Hetfield was recently quoted as saying, "We don't give a f--- what other people
think". I don't think Metallica cares about the critics. Take a look at the
    program
for the "Wherever I May Roam" tour, and you'll see what I mean. Also, Newsted
shaved his head at least 2 years ago, so I wouldn't consider him 'jumping on the

bandwagon'. I still can't get over that.

    > Wow man....I think you have to listen to what is Comercial Music...and
    >not Adult Contemporary.... I couldn't turn on MTV 2 years ago without
    >seeing Metallica....and Ill bet it will be the same for Load...

Define "commercial music". All music is commerical. If you buy an album in a
record store, you're paying for the cost of production, lawyers, accountants,
    the
record label, etc. I turn on MTV now, and I see bad game shows, cartoons, and
a lot of hip-hop videos. If you define "commercial music" as what's 'on the
    charts',
that would be Hootie, Alanis, Bush, and even Rage Against The Machine. Why
RATM? Because the album debuted on the Billboard Top Ten that week.

    >> You also forgot "IMO".
    >
    > No, I did not....

I still think you did :)

    >> I hope none of the quoted 'Jammers think I'm flaming them: I'm not.

Sorry. Thank you for replying in a civilized manner, Mojo.

    >Settle down Gilbert!!

Don't tell me to settle down. At least get my name right, it's Jack, dammit.

    >All this "IMO" stuff has got to stop! If you are the one writing it, of course
    it is
    >your opinion. I learned that in Junior High English. Writing IMO, IMHO, or
    IMVHO
    >after everything we say is redundant and simply states the obvious. It is also

    >annoying to have those letters follow everything we write. Let's try not doing
    it and
    >see what happens---I'll bet everyone still expresses their opinion, just
    without
    >telling us that they are expressing it.

Well, "chase", if you'd actually read some of the 'Jams instead of deleting
    them,
you'd know that many a flame war could have been averted had people stated that
they were expressing their opinions on piccolo snares, triggered drums,
    producers,
    'what is a musician', playing live, JP/DT is/are god(s), etc. I once made a
    comment
about a band that I disliked. I was promptly flamed for it. The situation was
    resolved
before things got ugly. All of which could have been avoided with the use of an

"IMO". If you don't like my posts, tough. Delete them. I'm not going to
    change for
you or anyone else. Carbon copy that where the sun doesn't shine. Of course,
    all
of this is _in my opinion_.

    Hi jammers:

Thanks for all the responses to my "What is it with jammers and Tori"
question. I'm going to go to Hear Music to listen to some Tori and perhaps
purchase the CD. I may end up just getting LatM since it's my B'day, and I
haven't bought myself a present yet.

I'm inclined to agree with the 4 types of DT fans theory. I'm not so
sure that the categories aren't oversimplifications, but I think there is
some definite truth to them. IMO, the jammers that seem to fit most
cleanly in the mentioned categories are the metal fans and the prog fans
(What was that I said about oversimplification??? :) Sorry to
pigeonhole people. It's just that I noticed the metal fans and the prog
heads first). I'm really neither. I respect a lot of those bands
(i.e., 'Ryche, Yes, Metallica, Rush), but I'm not really into them, but
I do want to pick up Mindcrime (not before LatM, though). I guess
I'm in the musician/likes-music-whatever-genre "half" of the DT fan base. I
mean I'll listen to Sting, Chante Moore (R&B vocalist), Metallica,
Soundgarden, DT, Extreme, Ani DiFranco, Michael Hedges, Tuck & Patti, RH
Chili Peppers, Steely Dan, Vai & Satch, Van Halen/Hagar, Tribe Called
    Quest, whatever.

I'm bummed that Derek said that DT won't have another album out until
1997. :( The same thing happened to me with Extreme when "Punchline..."
was pushed from late '94 to early '95. The good thing is that I found DT
in that time. Maybe I'll find a new band while waiting for the next DT. :)

            Yup!!!!!

    > and Are Death Metal singers musicians?

Depends on the singing...if you're not singing, but screaming a monotone
anger phrase....no!!! I don't think thats singing.....beacuse there is no
    melody in it....

Same with RAP singing.....I wouldn't call rap, singing...There is no
    melody in the singing....
So I get really offended when I see Rap 'musicians' claim they are
    musicians!!

    >>Thanks. Oh yeah, Red Wings in seven!<<

Not if Paul Coffey has anything to say about that :-)

I hope I'm wrong, but I think the Red Wings suffer from the "always
a bridesmaid, never a bride" syndrome. They can't seem to win the big
ones. They remind me of the California Angels. In 95 They played their
asses off all season then decide to choke the last month of the season
and end up watching the post season at home.

I'm listening to the new Soundgarden at the moment. This is about
the fifth time since I got it Tuesday. Every time I listen to it it
keeps getting better and better! I strongly recommend this LP. It's
similar in it's sound to superunknown but IMO is much better. The
reviewer in Entertainment Weekly who said that Soundgarden shouldn't
produce themselves is full of shit. They did a better job than the last
    guy did.

That's it from here. Till next time.

Mr. Hoglan has two ride cymbals. One on each side. Takes care of that

have heard that he left Death and is now drumming for Slayer. Is this true
or is the source a dumbass?

Why do we assume that the music changed for popularity reasons? Maybe they

    My bad, homey G-Funk. :-) I shouldn't have said anything...I haven't heard

I have to agree with him actually. I originally got in to DT ( well,
bought WDADU) because my Mom said, my friend Mr. Petrucci's son just
    released a tape.

Once I&W came out, everyone knew them :)

    As for Metallica......

I have to agree with Paul on the concert thing. They definately
put on a good show, even with the new softer stuff. I just hope
that the Metallica crunch is back in at least some of the songs on
the new album. The new song has some of the crunch in it, but is just
way too held back. It just doesn't stand out like it did in the past.

    Well, enough from me

Ok. Here we go. Opinions on various subjects discussed recently. 1. Hockey and Metallica versus DTC Please. The one reason many people subscribe to this list is because of the musical and ideological richness it lends. The other list (that we never get - Metropolis) is for the impartment of hard "news" and "information." If you don't like the spectrum of this list - hit the road. You are, however, more than welcome to disagree. 2. Metallica I heard one of the songs on the DSS metal station and it took me a few minutes to realize it was them. No real opinion, but one could catagorize me as a "pre-Black album Metallica fan." Let's hope this harkens back to the AJFA days, but I am not holding my breath (or any other part of my anatomy) for that. 3. Long Hair Hmm. I used to have long hair about six years ago. (Has it been that long?) It took about three years to get used to not having it, and now I wouldn't go back. I know you care. 4. Explicit Lyrics Didn't they once sticker a Frank Zappa album which was an instrumental recording? Explicit lyrics indeed. 5. Drive (The Group, Not the Verb nor the Noun) I have both of their releases and the better of the two is entitled "Diablero." Unfortuately, the first one "Characters in Time" is more easily available in your local cheap bin. Hold out for "Diablero." Something about them is sort of cheesy, though... 6. My Dying Bride Seth Hatelid wrote about this band. I have a bone to pick with him, but that comes later. I agree with his assessment that the singer sucks. The music is ok. I need to listen to this more. 7. Blind Guardian I finally got to listen to my new disc. Wow. They do covers of Mr. Sandman, Surfin' USA, and more. This is a very cool band, and I can't believe - repeat - CAN NOT believe that these guys are not released domestically (USA). If you like Gamma Ray or Helloween, or Judas Priest or...these guys are probably better. 8. My Bone with Seth (To Pick, Wise-Asses) He wrote: >DEATH: Symbolic-after all the hype about this disk I expected something to

    >cure cancer and premature ejaculation in donkeys-sadly I was VERY >dissapointed in this piece of crap. Chucks voice is almost as annoying as

I >really hate Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and other crap that is just noise. >The musicianship on this disk is pretty good but the songwriting blows and

    >the lyrics are sub-standard. Last Death disk I'll shell out $15 for. WHAT???? I realize you do point out that you are not really a fan of so-called "Death Metal," but to label Death's lyrics "standared" (sic) and "trite" just blows my mind. They don't sing about Satan and body parts and revolution and rain forests, etc. The lyrics are quite original for the genre. The musicianship is what sets it apart from "1,000's of other death metal bands." No one in this heavy a genre makes this complex a record. Like someone said, just listen to the drums alone, and you should stand in awe. To compare Death (modern-day Death, I must add, because they did use to suck circa "Scream Bloodly Gore") with such bands as CC, Sepultura, Korn, FF, Deicide, etc. does Death a grave (no pun intended) disservice. However, you are entitled to your opinion. It just so happens I disagree. 9. More Hockey-Related Material Follows in the .sig. Too bad! -- Kevin (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) GO WINGS!!! Shot down the Jets. Outlasted the Blues. Fly over the Avalanche!! (or as we like to call them: Nordalanche) 8 down, 8 to go.
