Just to piss off even more those who hate metallica.

A lot of people seem to be forgetting that the Black album came out in 1991,
meaning BEFORE Nirvana, before Pearl Jam, before any grunge was popular.
There was no bandwagon to jump on, no trend to follow. Metallica opened the
door for grunge by making Metal that didn't have the "Heavy Metal" wall of
intimidation to scare fans away ( ;) ) Dream Theater has the same thing.
I've played it for several people who said "This isn't Heavy Metal" There
was no way that they could have sold out because they were doing something NEW!

As far as comparisons to other albums, I like AJFA best because at the time
it meant something to me (Senior year in H.S. when I bought it, 1990/91) but
now, as I'm older, it really sounds like a bunch of kids playing long songs
about the latest thing on CNN (Which is how it was written) and te Black
album sounds more like a group of mature musicians crafting well-written
songs. (It also sounds much better. Bob Rock is a cool producer. No thin
    sounds here)

In fact, Metallica's older stuff (Pre-Black) has _MUCH_ more in common with
crap groups like Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam than the Black lbum does.
After all, it's all about Anger, The World Sucks, etc. Oh wait, I'd better
go put on my fireproof suit before I send. ZZZzzzzZZZZiiiip. Okay. Here I go.

OK, now we've got a debate to sink our collective teeth into - the singer/ musician thing.

I think music is in the ear of the beholder. You can make whatever divisions and decisions you want as to what constitutes music, but there will always be things that slip out of your definition, and the more you tighten your definition, the more musics will slip through your fingers (to paraphrase Princess Leia). Somebody said that a singer has to sing with a melody or else he's not a musician - tell Mike Portnoy that and he'll kick your ass! Mike, like myself, is a rap fan and I'm pretty sure he would agree that rap is music. If I had to make a definition of music, it would have to be something along the lines of, "any sound that elicits an emotional response from a listener". One of my favorite bands is Praxis, a bizarre free-metal group centering around Buckethead, drummer Brain, producer Bill Laswell, and occasionally the great Bootsy Collins. Their music has very little form, to say nothing of melody. But I very much enjoy it, so it's music to me. I also enjoy intelligent rap artists like Lucas, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and BDP. I would also consider them not just musicians, but talented, creative, and original ones.

Anyway, I'd also like to take this time to let James Arin know that I am VERY INTERESTED in DT promo picks! However, I don't even have the money to buy the new King's X CD tomorrow.

I apologize if I offended anyone with my Geek references in an earlier posting. I should have said that my definition of a geek is someone who, for whatever reasons, doesn't comply with or fit into societal norms, and who also doesn't take categorization easily. "Geek" often equals "Freak".

That's quite enough out of me,

Friday was indeed a milestone of my life.

A friend and I drove one and a half hours down to Monterey Friday night to see "Heavy Metal" at the Dream Theater (aww, yeah!)

    Now I've seen it all!!!

Anyway, I called in ahead of time for directions to the place and guess what? This lady picks up the phone and says "Hello, Dream Theater." YESSSSS!!!! It's so rad! If you want to hear this just call (408) 372-1331. It might cost you long distance, but so what?!! You get to hear "Hello, Dream Theater." That's all that matters. And when she asks why you called, just yell "I'M YOUR BIGGEST FAN!!!!", which will confuse her even more, then hang up. So anyway I ask for the directions and talk to her a little bit afterward. I was kind of surprised she hadn't heard of the band. I asked if she knew a Howard Portnoy, and she replied "A Howard used to own the place, I don't remember his last name."

We passed the time during the drive by popping in my "Ultimate DT Mix" and headbanging, singing, and pounding away on the steering wheel(my personal drum-kit). We also documented the entire trip through photographs. Yes, yes, DT freaks we are.

An hour and a half later, we were there. DREAM THEATER was this rectangular building with "Dream Theater" logos in stain-glass on three of the sides. Inside the theater, we asked some people of they've heard of the band and much to our surprise, no one had. Kinda weird if you ask me. I showed everyone there my awesome DT navy blue hooded sweatshirt (thanks, Trey!). And they all smiled, but I knew they were probably thinking: "What a freak..." Anyway, we'd arrived a little early so we *took the time*, so to speak, to pick up some souvenirs...

Sitting in my room right now is a sugar packet, a coffee stirrer, a creamer, two sweet-n-low packs(I'll sell the extra to the highest bidder! :p) , a paper towel, and a napkin all from Dream Theater. As I was picking up my various souvenirs an employee looked at me and smiled (Once again, probably thinking "What a freak...") I took this opportinuty to get him to sign my napkin, to which he happily obliged. He wrote: "awesome, Dream Theater". I have no idea why in hell he wrote "awesome", I guess because me and my friend kept using the word every five-or-so seconds during our visit there.

They had this antique video camera on display there and various old magazine clippings decorating the place. We took advantage of the facilities, using DT toilets, DT soap, DT running faucet water!

The actual movie screen area had a "dream-like" effect (Hence the name, I guess) It was very colorful and the seats were nice and comfortable.

The movie was okay. But who cares about *that*!

Who cares about the meaning of life?!!! Who cares about true love?!!! I have been to the Dream Theater!!!!!! I can die content now.

Has anyone ever noticed how effective an opening band can be to getting your musical attention? Personally, I saw videos from Alice in Chains & Type O Negative and wasn't terribly impressed until I saw them open for bands that I like (Van Halen & Queensryche, respectively). Alice was booed for the duration of their set and yet they still manged to put on a brilliant show. Type O played to a pretty much indifferent audience at the QR show and I thought they had a great sense of humour and there music was a lot of fun.

The thing is, everyone enjoys making fun of opening bands yet I think they make us catch-on to their music a lot more effectively than the radio or videos.

    Anybody else experience this phenominon?

    by Me.

A simple four-step process to eliminate your initial feelings of rage when someone flames you on the Internet.

#1 - Compare the flame-job with the rest of the mail you receive, or the rest of the responses you receive on a mailing list to which you post. If you receive ten e-mails a day, and only one of them is negative, is that such a damaging ratio that you have to reply hatefully? Who cares about the one guy? If you post ten times to a mailing list, and only once out of those ten does someone call you an idiot, what's the big deal? (Unless, of course, you happen to be a Fucking Idiot, in which case people will call you that all the time.)

"Well, I get about fifteen e-mails, and none of them are really flames. Usually about once every couple of days someone pisses me off."

#2 - Compare your e-mail with the rest of the things you do on the Internet. Ever check out an IRC channel? It's much more anonymous there if you're worried about tarnishing your name. Ever web-surf? That's a solitary activity as well, and occasionally more interesting than, oh, I don't know, reading through a mailing-list digest. :) Plus, it's almost as colorful as some of the posts you read. ;)

"Of course I look at websites now and then. E-mail isn't all I use my account for, and it isn't all the Internet has to offer."

#3 - Compare your Internet usage with the rest of the things you do on a computer. Do you use WordPerfect or some other word-processing program? Are you writing up spreadsheets? What percentage of everything you do on a computer is comprised of e-mail, or interactions with other people over the Internet?

"Probably about one-fifth of my time on the computer is spent reading and writing e-mail. Not that big a deal."

#4 - What significance does the computer have with the rest of the things you do during the day? (or night?) Does it hold the same importance as the calculus mid-term you're facing tomorrow? Is it as lovable as the person you're supposed to call later? Can you watch it as intently as that team, the one you hope wins because you've got money riding on the game? AfterDark Screen Savers can be very entertaining, but is your life focused on this monitor? Of course there are people who would answer "Yes!" but the purpose of this is to put flames into perspective.

"Most of the time during the day, I'm not even thinking about the computer. Usually I have too much economic theory and law cases to read over. Then there's my job."

    Summary:

Flames < Total E-Mail < Internet < Computer < Life, Assuming You Have One

    Life > Computer > Internet > Total E-Mail > Flames

If you spend all of your time concentrating on other people's negative impressions of you, you need to either gain some self-respect, or gain a life. Find something else to occupy your time with than what everyone else thinks of you. Example: What do You think of You? Whatever your answer, it shouldn't be dictated by another person's opinion.

I don't think thats singing.....beacuse there is no >melody in it.... >Same with RAP singing.....I wouldn't call rap, singing...There is no >melody in the singing....

i have to disagree with this. yesterday i heard a rap group called "bone= thugs-n-harmony" or something like that. their rapping has melody and is= done in harmonies, yet is still most definitely rap. and besides,= something does not have to have a melody to be expressive and convey= emotion, imagery, and feeling. because it has no melody like other music= does not mean it does not add to and accentuate the music. besides, a key= part of death metal vocals and rapping is RHYTHM, which, if i am not= mistaken, is a key part in much music we listen to. the vocal should be= taken in context of the whole, not isolated and dissected, because that is= not how the vocal works. it does not operate alone, in operates in the= framework of the song. besides, o say that something with a monotonic= tendency is not music is a statement of opinion. remember that whole "what= is a musician" thread. this strikes me as being very similar. how can we= stand up and defend the integrity of the musician against academic= ramblings and then put down entire categories of singing?

    >Mr. Hoglan has two ride cymbals. One on each side. Takes care of that >awkward reaching problem, but adds to the expense problem. ;-) BTW....I >have heard that he left Death and is now drumming for Slayer. Is this true >or is the source a dumbass?=20

i don't know about the slayer thing, but gene has left the band. i also= hear that the band was dropped from it's label? someone care to verify= this? i do know that chuck has a side project, "control denied", in the= works as well, which is apparently in a more traditional metal vein.

    >Why do we assume that the music changed for popularity reasons? Maybe they >just had a change of taste.

right on. i have met chuck schuldiner and have spoken to him at length, and= i can attest to the fact that he has great integrity as a person and as an= artist, and would never "sell out" or cave in to any outside pressure. he= is a truly independent person. if you don't like the newer stuff and think= it's selling out, don't listen to it. chuck is simply growing as a= musician and this is how he chooses to express that. don't slam the motive= until you know something about the individual you are slamming.

    >6. My Dying Bride=20 >=20 >Seth Hatelid wrote about this band. I have a bone to pick with him,=20 >but that comes later. I agree with his assessment that the singer=20 >sucks. The music is ok. I need to listen to this more.=20

really? i love this band. actually they are one of my three favorite= bands. while i agree that the singer is not a textbook singer in terms of= approach and does not have the best timbre in the business, he is still= conveys an incredible amount of feeling and the emotion really comes= through. you can here the suffering in his voice. especially on "the= angel and the dark river."

well, sorry so much preaching. later.

Hey Dave, Thanks for the set list from the Fates/DT show. After seeing it though, I am glad I saw the two bands seperatly. Fates played as the main act in November 1994, they played a bood mix of old and new. 1) Guardian 2) Silent cries, and Anarchy Divine 3) Nothing left to say, Through different eyes, 4) Life in still water, Point of view, Eleventh hour, Eye to eye, and Don't follow me 5) Outside looking in, Pale fire, Monument, Face the fear, Shelter me.

It was an amazing show which the only short coming was the 6 opening acts, which caused fates to go on at 2:15 a.m. Anyone who has seen a show at a place run by Frank Cariola can attest to this. Sorry Mr. Cool. The article was from August 1992 with Mark Zonder. You should listen to him some more. He is absolutely amazing.

OK,/me asks for advice from any King Crimson fans on the jam... which CD do you think I should get first..."In the Court of the.." or "Discipline"? I want to hear something really edgy and aggressive, yet really out there. I've heard 21st Century Schizoid Man already on the GD boxed set,and liked it, but a lot of people have recommended Discipline... what do y'all think?

I don't care if metallica is as heavy, as fast, writes songs as long, have thier hair shorter than they used to... I just want the music to be good... period. People change and move on to different things...I don't listen or play the same music I used to 5 years ago. Do you want DT to make another I&W or Awake? I don't, I want it to be new, refreshing, and surprising so that it kicks me in the ass that much more:)

    >Same with RAP singing.....I wouldn't call rap, singing...There is no >melody in the singing.... >So I get really offended when I see Rap 'musicians' claim they are >musicians!! >

    I don't get offended... I just laugh because I can't take them seriously :)

Greetin's from a schizophrenic (all 4 types!) DT fan, with a nice Metallica opinion fer y'all.

I first got into Metallica when Ride The Lightning was rereleased on Elektra around '85. I still consider Master of Puppets to be one of the all-time definitive Metal albums, and one of the most important rock albums of the 80's. I saw them at Lake Compounce(anyone remember that place?) on the Justice For All tour, and they were fantastic. Then the Black album came out, and I wondered what had happened to the number one speed metal band. I saw them in Hartford that tour, and we were REALLY excited about getting tickets in the taping section(still have those tapes somewhere. . .). Unfortunately, the band was so drunk they couldn't play. Lars couldn't keep the beat for one song. So yesterday, my wife and I heard that new song a couple of times on the radio, and I almost fell asleep at the wheel. I'd like if the person who found this "progressive"-sounding could explain what he meant, exactly. It sounded like every other band out there today. I realize that bands change over time, sometimes for better or worse. Bands like Rush and Iron Maiden have gone up and down, going through different sounds and phases. But Metallica seems to have lost all their energy and creativity. I'll wait to hear the rest of this album before I judge (any more, that is!), but I can't really say I like this new direction so far. It's a shame that there are only a few bands around today playing anything that could be called metal; hopefully this dull alternative phase will pass soon. (I do like some currently popular acts, but most of it is pretty dull.)

Hope you enjoyed my depressing whining,

    DJKA
