What about the first track on the new Pantera disc? It's not pleasurable,
but it is cool as shit, kick ass music!

A little behind on your 'jams, Dave? This has been covered ad nauseum

Not really, I haven't done that stuff in a long time. Anyway, sorry

But seriously, folks, "Symbols of Time" is still available on the
Avalanche Records Web site (www.bonaire.com) and with any CD ordered,
you get another one free, till May 31st. Somebody else mentioned this
on the 'jam - I checked it out and ordered SOT plus Threshold's
"Psychdelicatessen" just as he had done, both for US $18.95. Cool deal,

and more so response doesnt necessarily have to be pleasure... just look
at Fear Factory's 'Replica' i mean, when you look into that song, its
very depressing, but its music... just look all those depressing goth
bands... thats definately not pleasure... its more of getting an
emotional response, not necessarily positive or negative, IMO... music
*is* emotion to speak bluntly... and emotion can get pretty pissed off
    at times ;)

    Hey everyone.

I borrowed a few CDs from friend of mine...

    - Tales From Yesterday, the Yes tribute on Magna Carta. All I gotta say is
HOLY SHIT!!!! The new, fucked up, totally, re-vamped, totally cool version
    of "Roundabout" rulz, d00d!

    - Trevor Rabin, Can't Look Away. I won't make fun of Trevor Rabin ever
again!!! He's an incredible guitar/keys/bass player and singer too!

    - Asia, Aqua. Very good, although not the Asia I'm used to. Besides, they
have an Al (Pitrelli) AND a Steve (Howe) playing guitar in this lineup. ;)

And after I got home from my friend's place, I realized what all three CDs
    had in common...

To the one who posted about Death's lyrics being un-original:

I understand the point that you are trying to make comparing each
song off "Symbolic" to another song, but I disagree. Though I haven't heard
most of the songs that you compared, the few I did contradicted themselves.
Savatage's "One Child" came out AFTER the Death song. As for Fear Factory,
I'm not sure which one came out first, but my cd's each read "1995".
Therefore, those two FF songs were released and probably written fairly
close in time to the Death songs. So how could they possibly be
    regurgitating old ideas?

For some reason though, when I listen to this cd and read the lyrics
along with the music, it really annoys me and I can't listen to the whole
thing, probably because of the voice and lousy vocal arrangements. But when
I put the book away and just lay back, I am blown away by the music, and to
me that is all that matters.

Bernd: White Zombie's "Astro Creep 2000" was No. 1 on some charts
here when it came out. Many people say it is alternative, but I think it is
just metal with a bit of a weird streak. But, more importantly: THEY ARE
TOURING WITH PANTERA THIS SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!! Later,

I like Candlebox a great deal. Klett is one of the better guitarist in
"alternative rock" (in quotes b/c I dont like the term). Anyway, their new
record "Lucy" isnt horrible, but it was a let down. Their first record is the
one to get. Im hopefully going to see them at Malibu on June 11th. Cant wait.

I just received my copy of Echolyn's "Suffocating the Bloom", and I
must say I am impressed. Although the production is not quite up to "As the

fan. It is a little more progressive than ATW. Really kickin!!!!

This is a trivia question for any Echolyn fan:
What is the song "My Dear Wormwood" about? Anybody know?

ItCotCK is rather mellow (sometimes exceedingly so), so if you want to see a
rocking Crimson, this disk may not be for you. I think 'Red' is a great
album to start: terrific songs, an epic 12 minute track that's hauntingly
beautiful, John Wetton when he still had the most wicked bass sound this
side of the universe and more. The CD is 23 years old but it could have been
recorded yesterday, this one hasn't dated a bit.

If you want to get a taste of modern Crimson, get the double live CD
'B-boom' which contains tracks from all KC incarnations played by the double
trio (2 drums, 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 Chapman stick). I'm playing this now and
tracks like 'Red', 'Vroom vroom', 'Lark's Tongues in Aspic' sound great.

If you've got money to burn, get the Great Deceiver box. I'm still not a big
fan of the improvs, but there's plenty of other good stuff on there.

John Petrucci gets thast sound on ACOS with a PHASER. It's similar to a

first there was the already mentioned y(x)=Acosx + Bcosx. Then there was
d(t)=.... And now (and this is the best one) the teacher taught us the

and then obviously I start hearing Dt songs in my head and I don't pay
attention...as if i ever did in the first place:)

that's about the best thing i've heard yet. but if anyone cares, here's
what Webster's dictionary has to say about it:

"one skilled in music." and "a composer or professional performer of
    music."

i might as well throw something in while i'm at it. i understand that
we're in between DT albums and all, but let's PLEASE not let this thread
become a flame war again. have you noticed people posting their 'opinions'
with no reference to "IMHO, IMO, this is what *I* think, etc.?" to the
guy that originally posted the question about singers being musicans...
answer it for yourself. there IS no true answer. everyone has their own
opinons about music AND what they consider to be a musician. i think
people that sit around and truly try to analytically define music and
musicianship are missing the point. IMHO it's about FEELING. it's
EMOTION. when do you consider a song to be GOOD? for me, it's when i'm
moved emotionally. when i heard Metropolis for the first time, i nearly
drove off the road. it MOVED me. i didn't analyze why.

my suggestion: just relax and listen to the music. don't try to define
it, or the people that create it. some people on this list get over
critical about genres of music outside of prog/metal. i find it kinda
funny that DT, which consists (IMHO, of course) of 5 of the most gifted
musicians alive, has openly stated that they listen to all kinds of music.

    just something to think about.

    >what I mean? Lots of death metal, to me, is no tougher than Green Day and
    >don't repsect them as musicians AT ALL. Next?

why do i hear a fire starting somewhere........

    > If fingernails on a chalkboard pisses you off, is that music?

well..... if it actually produces a recognizable note and is done within a
certain rythmn....... (that was joke. laugh dammit)

If y'all forgot, this is Dr. Teeth's new account. Dat's me.

Here's a kind of refreshing viewpoint on the trends of music.

First, in the 80's, there was the first glam bands: Van Halen, Motley Crue,
Ratt, Poison, Def Leppard, Guns and Roses, and AC/DC (though they aren't
exactly glamourous..) These were the big ones, at least. Anyway, they got
big because they had a fresh new attitude that fit with the times and every
highschool kid adored them! Raw, uncut, pure, hard, brand-new Rock. (With
apologies to the Fresh Prince on that reference...)

But then, the high school kids in their bands started saying, "Yeah! This shit
rocks! Our band should sound like THAT!" And thus the second generation of
glam bands appeared: Slaughter, Warrant, Mr. Big, Bad English, Jackyl, and
about 50 other copycat bands without a whole lot more to offer than the same
old tired formula. They were cool for a while, but then the kids got tired of
the same old recipe. So they moved on.

    Insert Seattle bands here.

Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots (I know they're not from Seattle),
Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and to an extent, Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Also, NIN and Ministry became more radio-worthy...

These bands came through with a fresh new intensity that drew the masses to
the "alternative" side. Ya gotta admit, the first albums by these guys pretty
much kick ass. Some more than others, but it was new and it was cool. Kids
threw themselves into the whole "I hate myself, but I hate this world even
more" mentality. I wonder if they suicide rate has been going up recently?

But then the kids started saying, "What a great band! I want our band to sound
    like this!"

(Do you see where I'm headed with this?)

Silverchair, Hole, Bush, Oasis, Letters to Cleo, Sponge, Wax, Filter, Crash Test
Dummies, Ween, Presidents, Toadies, CIV, Candlebox, Korn, KMFDM, White Zombie,
Foo Fighters, Marilyn Manson, Dink, Faith No More, The Cranberries, Frente,
    Green Day, Blind Melon, Rancid...

I really don't want to step on anyone's toes on this, because the above bands
do have talent, some more than others (Namely FNM, KMFDM, Korn and Filter).
If you look at each band, you can say they have something there, but if you
look at the whole list, you might be able to see what I'm getting at. It's
basically a bunch of bands sticking with a formula. Gotta be "alternative" to
    be cool, ya know?

My point is, this is a cycle. Just like Glam died in the 80's, Alternative will
die out too. The sooner the better if you ask me. 80's music was about having
fun and living dangerously. 90's is introspective and often sad or depressing.
Quite pessimistic. I'm thinking that the next wave of music will be a more
positive sort again. People can be depressed for only so long.

What will the next wave be? I'd like to think Progressive, but somehow I don't
see it happening. First, it's an intellectual thing. Only a certain type of
person can REALLY appreciate prog. A lot of people will only listen to the
lyrics no matter WHAT is being played, and frankly, songs like DT writes don't
exactly relate directly to your average Joe Blow. I mean, if you extract them
and find their meaning, some prog stuff is amazingly meaningful and heartfelt
but the average person wouldn't put that much effort into it. They'd take the
songs for what they hear "Watch the sparrow falling?" What the hell's that all
about? Though I'd like to see Prog-rock catch on, I just don't think it'll be
next. Maybe a few more generations down the road. Society will be more
educated by then. (Do I sound snooty?)

Actually, I'm thinking along the lines of the music of bands like Dave Mattews
Band and Blues Traveller. The grunge feel is gone and you have a more perky
feel and message from these guys. I guess you could put Hootie in with this
group too, but their music is too damn simple for me to give much respect to.
But that same sort of spirit is there. Unfortunately, these bands have a
lighter feel to them (except for non-radio Blues Traveller) and I don't know if
this is a GOOD direction for music to be taking. But if it's away from
Alternative, then I guess anything's good. And I see Alternative dying out
within 2 years. In 5 years, we'll roll our eyes at the thought of us listening
to "Peaches" and "No Rain". I mean, we do that with glam rock, don't we? And
at the time, wasn't it pretty damn cool to see David Lee Roth prancing about
talking about women and drinking? The same'll happen again...

To conclude this, everything above this is my opinion and if I offended anyone,
deal with it. If you don't like my opinion, come to my house and we'll settle
it with a good ol' thumb-wrestling match.

    Hasta!

    Ytsefriends,

I haven't had the chance to read this digest for the past couple of days for
reasons that will become clear later on in my note, so please forgive the
    possible tardiness of this post.

Kevin Gilbert, a dear friend of mine & a brilliant musician/producer who had
many fans in DT circles (including the band members themselves), was found
dead of accidental asphyxiation in his home in Eagle Rock, CA Saturday
morning. He was 29 years old, only a few months younger than me, and was one
of the few people I've ever know whom I would categorize as a musical genius.
He was one of the kindest, gentlest men I've ever known and like a brother
to me, and I will miss him more than I could ever possibly express to you in
    words.

There is an unfortunate DT sidenote to this story. As of last Wednesday,
Kevin Gilbert had agreed to produce the next DT album. As you might imagine,
the project will now be delayed indefinitely because of this horrible
tragedy. Kevin was the only producer they had in mind at this time, so now
they have to start looking from scratch all over again.

Mike Portnoy called today to try to make some sense of all this. He had
originally called me a couple of months ago to discuss the possibility of
Kevin producing the album since he knew that Kevin & I were friends, so I
gave him Kevin's phone number, wished him good luck, and Mike took it from
there. I knew that they'd been negotiating this production deal between
them, but didn't know for sure until today that Kevin had actually said
"yes." I know it would have been an amazing collaboration and it's a shame
that now we will never know what it would have sounded like.

Mike is in total shock right now, as am I and everyone else who knew Kevin.
This is the first time I personally have ever lost anyone like this and I
never thought anything could hurt so much. He was so young, and so full of
life, and still had so much to give. I just can't believe he's gone... all I
can hope for is that he's in a better place now, and that he's in peace.

Thanks to all of you who have sent your condolences. Your support means a
    lot to me.

    Take care everyone,

    Jennifer
