    Hi all

let's get this straight. Metal vocalists (especially death/thrash/hardcore) are
also instrumentalists who make a contribution to the music. They don't have to
be singers. Don't believe me: check out the cover of 'Chaos AD' by Sepultura -
Max is listed as 'throat', not singer or vocalist. These guys throw in a lot
to the feel and atmosphere of the music and it works well in most cases, because
they aren't pretending that they can sing - otherwise you end up looking a
complete jerk like that new guy from Iron Maiden (yuk IMHO).

Just off to get my head shaved: who gives a flying fuck about hair, colour of
leather jackets, brand of underwear and deodorant? Let the music do the talking.
If hair is sooo important to play/like prog metal, how come Damon likes Dream
Theater when he's never seen the guys?

If taking a long time to get a new album out (metallica=5 years) means selling
out, then Dream Theater had better hurry up...

    stay safe and happy listening

This has maybe been mentioned, but probably deserves repeating. Did
anyone see DT at the El 'n Gee in New London in December. "Pleasure
Crush" has got to be the worst band I have ever heard. It has turned
into an inside joke with my friends at school-when ever anyone does
something stupid or one of us thinks something is lame, all we say is
    Pleasure Crush. Unbelievable.

I am really happy to see Death so much in the Yste-Posts. This is a band
that IMHO is really skilled in what they do. Also IMHO, Gene Hoglan (my
favorite drummer and yes I am a drummer so I know my drums!) could eat MP
for lunch and Steve DiGiorgio and Myung in a bass contest would be the
equivalent of utopia. I give the edge to SD, though. I know very
little about bass, but I DO know that there are sounds that come out of
SD's bass that make me shake my head. And Hoglan is f**kin'
incredible! Don't worry, DT is my fav. band. I can see how some cannot get
into Chuck's voice, but if you are a trained Death metal fan, you learn to
tune him out =). I don't own Symbolic because I heard that SD was not on
it, but if you don't believe in the skills of the aforementioned music
gods give INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PATTERNS a try. People like the 'jammers,
prog fans that appreciate complex, thoughtful music, WILL like this one,
I PROMISE! (if you can tune out Chuck; his songwriting is top-notch,
though) IMHO, you can't be the innovators of a music as complex as Death
Metal without being gods yourself. Human is pretty good, too. No Hoglan,
though. I am curious if any 'jammers have rocked to the bands Sadus, Cynic,
or Dark Angel. (Death's roots) If so, e-mail me!

P.S. Death fans: Imagine a Death/DT tour! WDADU=When Dream and Death Unite!
P.P.S. Sorry for resurrecting the 'what is a musician' thread. I just
wanted to know if the 'jammers thought singers were musicians. Plus IMHO
there was not much going on on the 'Jam.
P.P.P.S. Here's a new thread: Do you 'jammers think that JL looks like
Fabio? IMHO I think that he does.
YKYADTF: if you're trained to include IMHO for everything that could
    even slightly be considered subjective.

    G.A.S. UPDATE!!!

We are now more than halfway through the month of May, and the number of
G.A.S. participants has reached 70! We've lost a little momentum with
respect to the goal of 100 'jammers. For those of you who haven't yet
participated, I would greatly appreciate your joining forces in this, as I
find it interesting to know where the general interest of the YtseJam as a
whole lies. Top 10 lists (that can include DT) can be E-mailed to:

    syoung@primenet.com

and will be received until May 31st, at 11:59pm. Lists will be tallied and
a non-DT band/artist will be crowned on June 1st (my wife's birthday), and
complete results (ALL bands/artists received and number of votes) will be
posted on or about that day.

    ------------------------------

    Current Top 5 (non-DT) as of 5/21/96, out of 212 bands/artists received:
    1) Rush (41 votes) -> It's August for their next LP - "Test for Echo"!!!
    2) Queensryche (40)
    3) Fates Warning (29)
    4) Metallica (20) -> New CD out in 2 weeks!!!
    5) King's X (16) -> New CD out TODAY!!! (Anyone pick it up yet? Could one
of you 16 KX fans E-mail me their critique on the disc? I'm going to buy it
anyway - I just want to know what to expect. I saw it today, but I ain't
got the cash at the moment - it's killin' me, too - I was kind of
disappointed to see the pic on the back of the CD: Doug, Ty AND Jerry have
done away with the long hair - that really bothered me and I don't know
    why.)

*** Yes, Extreme, Marillion, Savatage, and Shadow Gallery are also strong
contenders for a spot in the Top 5. Others with 10 or more votes: Tori
Amos, Galactic Cowboys, and Van Halen.

I guess I spoke too soon on the RUSH/QR battle - it has heated up again and
they are back to within one vote - it might be a close one after all

10 days left before the deadline - we're running out of time - We're still
shooting for 100 participants and we still lack 30 (three a day).
So, get out and vote, you guys.

Yes, I know I should have brought this onto the Metallica list, but I am no
longer a member of that because I felt the people on it were to crude, too
stupid. So here is some news.
In the Netherlands, three different CD singles were released of "Until it
Sleeps". One is a 2-track cardboard thing with "2x4" on it as well (live
Donington 1995). The second is a flat jewelbox with three tracks - title
track, "2x4" live and a demo version of the title track. The third is a
regular jewelbox with three tracks. The second track is a "Kill/Ride Medlez"
(live Donington '95) and the third is "Until it Sleeps (Herman Melville
Remix". This last song is a hardcore kind of house remix by Moby. I have a
hard time liking it, but I am determined to have prejudices. I like the
title song, but "2x4" is a bit better. Still, I think I'd like the new album
once it's out. The thing I hate most is that they did *three* CD singles,
    damn it!

Sorry, but revisionist history does not work on me. the copyright date on
all 3 albums (Black, Ten and Nevermind) is 1991. Check it. I did. And, I
distinctly remember, when Nirvana and Pearl Jam were first played (DJ:
"Here'a new group!" sort of thing) thinking "Hm. Now that Metallica's new
album is popular, heavier groups are getting airplay." Even if the other
ones beat Metallica by a few months (at most) they got NO airplay until
AFTER the black album. The Black album was about Metallica deciding that
they didn't have to be these angst-filled teenagers anymore.

right - this guy will be missed. Besides co-writing a couple of Sheryl
Crow's big radio hits (big deal, right?), he also appeared on Magna

What law says it's stupid? The same law that says that the entire Kill Em
All album is lame, which is why I've (maybe) managed to sit through it once.
It's got about as much intelligence behind it as your average grunge band by
    today's standards.

To someone else: Faith No More was out before grunge hit. Epic had already
been a hit for a while when I saw them as one of the opening bands for
Metallica on the Day on the Green show (also had Soundgarden and
Queensryche) So they are definitely a first generation or pre-grunge band.
I don't even think they sound grungy at all. But, I only own Angel Dust, a
    fantastic album.

only album I've heard by him is "Parallels," and to be honest, I was

what he does with them, but I wouldn't call it "super-complex". It's

TWO ride cymbals? Whew, glad to hear it, that explains a lot:). Anyway,
you're right about Hoglan, he is definitely into the double-bass thing.
Listening to "Symbolic", sometimes I think he's too much into it. He is
clearly capable of doing a lot with other parts of his set, but I get the
feeling he's just more interested in his bass drums. Some of his tom
fills (like in the guitar solo for the 2nd track, and one in the first
few seconds of the last track) are so rapid and so smoothly-executed they
actually reminded me of Weckl (don't know why, maybe it was just the way
the drums sounded). I like his work, I just wish he'd mix it up a bit
more; I'd love to hear what he sounds like then.

So let's talk about something outside Metallicrap. I'm a lead
singer/bassist and I've been for more than 6 years now, done a CD etc. etc
(I know you don't care). I believe that whatever your style, your voice is
an instrument as long as you think of it as an instrument, i.e. you take
care of it and are aware of parts of your body that make the singing
actually possible and non-random. If you don't care about how you sing, if
you don't try to shape your voice, whatever the style, then you should not
consider yourself as making use of an instrument.

    ------------------------------

Concerning the "Death vs. Sepultura-like bands" argument, it's just a
matter of taste. I love DT and I love Death. I love Death not for the
lyrics, but for the technical/melodic part of their music. Comparing to DT,
the lyrics are effectively sub-standard, but they're also less out front .

BTW, apparently Death has split up and Chuck has already recorded and
issued a new album under the name "control Denied". Can anyone help me with
    this?

I know you didn't mean anything by it, but you shouldn't have even
dignified that fucking joke by spreading it around. Did you ever think
that someone on the Jam might have had relatives on that flight...?

I have never seen or played the original JPM100. I have spoken with every
Ibanez dealer in Memphis, TN and 4 mail order houses around the country and
none of them have ever had one nor can they get one since the JPM100 was a
limited edition of 100. However, on May 10, 1996 I received my JPM100P2 via
UPS. This guitar is identical to the JPM100 except the guitar features the
new color scheme (which is on one of the guitars in the JP instructional
video). It even came with an autographed certificate of authenticity
identical to the one with the JPM100. I absolutely love this guitar but I
have always been a fan of the Ibanez guitars based on the JEM series. I had
to order the guitar from Sam Ash Music in New York. They had two coming and
I got one of them. The price was $1050.00 plus $75.00 for the case.
Shipping came out to be about $15.00. The number for Sam Ash is
(800)4SA-MASH. Ask for Mike Ruzzo (spelling?) and tell him Richard in
    Memphis sent you.

It seems I can't get to clean these jams it time. I do a whole bunch every
3-4 days, That's the reason you don't hear from me for 7-8 jams then I come
down cluttering one with my crap.

I don't like Metallica, but I condone (no, not condom) it being talked on
    the jam, that's all.

BTW, what's the problem with your name, anyway?
