Don't flame me if this has already been identified earlier, I haven't

With my band, I've also experienced two separate "firings" where not only
two musicians were lost, but also two friends. However, this was true for
the other band members only. I always stayed friends with them.
I just can't understand why musical difficulties and problems should turn
into personal ones. They're two different things, no?

    Now hold your breath...

    Dream Theater Fanatics,

I've just started receiving YTSEJAM and this is my first post. I'd
like to share my introduction to DT... It all started at a music
event in Milwaukee, WI known as Summerfest. Summerfest runs for
about a solid week and has at least half a dozen different stages
sponsored by brewers such as Miller, Leinenkugel's, Old Style, Pabst,
etc. In addition, there is the Marcus Amphitheater which features a
"huge" headlining act each night. On this particular night, there
was a really lame headliner.. probably the Judd's or someone like
that. On the Miller Mainstream Rock Stage I saw that there was a
band called "Dream Theater" scheduled to play. After seeing all the
black T-Shirts in front of the stage, I knew I was in the right
    place.

When the band hit the stage I was completely blown away. I am a
decent guitar player and I pride myself on how great my Marshall
full stack sounds cranked to the max... but when I heard John hit the
first couple notes I almost started bawling. There are a lot of
great players out there but I don't think I've heard anyone as
precise and smoking live as John Petrucci. Mike's drumming was so
dynamic and awesome sounding that I would put him in a class with
Neil Peart. It's easy to just pound the double bass non-stop
through an entire song, but Mike played very tasteful and was very
musical in his approach. Of course, the rest of the band also kicked
ass. I would like to thank Dream Theater for giving me something new
to go out a buy... they actually got me to take Operation: Mindcrime
out of my CD Player. No small feat.

Hello again. So soon, I know. Mike Bahr wrote concerning the Fates compilation and mentioned that it was worth it due to the new song "Circles" and an acoustic version of "We Only Say Goodbye." If I recall correctly, it wasn't an acoustic version so much as a remix. Not trying to be nit-picky, but I would really liked to have heard some Fates acoustic material - so don't get my hopes up! Unless, (pause), *you* have some tape somewhere you are planning to release as a new cd... -- Kevin (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) Patrick Roy was reminded last night why he was run out of (or, ran himself out of ) Montreal. Heeeellllllllooooooooo eeeeeverybodeeeeeee!

Just figured that I'd unlurk for a bit to say hi. I have been in Arizona for the past two weeks. Someone had mentioned about LI being hot lately. Ha, ha, ha try AZ. :) People say "It's the humidity and not the heat." Bullshit, 103 is still friggin' hot, humidity or not. :)

Anyway, while I was out here, I had the chance to hang out with Mike Bahr. I met him at the Dec BH show and we BS'd a lot over email but didn't get a chance to hang out with him. MIKE IS ONE OF THE COOLEST GUYS I KNOW. You rule, dude. Friday night, I got the chance to hang out with him and his friends from Scoobacca. Johan, Taz, Jeremy and Drew. Had a great time. Hey, Mike, no more drinking 'waffles', OK?

Here is a wee bit o' trivia for you all about Mike's CD's. It lists a Michael Weiland. Who is this guy and how did he get this name?

All in all, a cool trip. :D Next stop, LA!

    Greetings to all-

Before this Vanessa Mae thing goes away, I want to say a few things about it. A few days ago everybody was talking about how all these popular alternative acts were just factory-made imitations created to appeal to the "flavor of the month"-loving public. Well, IMO that is exactly what Vanessa Mae is. She just popped on the scene with a gimmick (the fact that she'a a prodigy) and now she is preceeding to capitalize on the popularity that was given to the Yanni/Kenny G/John Tesh crowd. Aside from her technical ability, I have no respect for her. Just check the credits on the CD and see how many of the tunes she actually wrote or arranged, zero if I remember correctly. And does the guy who wrote/arranged the tunes ever get to be in the spotlight? Not a chance. Another thing- why is the listening public so wrapped up in being "entertained?" Vanessa Mae plays these terribly cheesy arrangements of Bach's "Tocatta and Fugue in D minor" and Paganini's "24th Caprice." They've got drums and electric guitars and a funky beat. I mean, come on, why can't people just enjoy the music as it was written? Call me a purist, but I've loved these pieces for years, and a funky beat ain't where it's at when it comes to them.
