Andrew Miller makes a good point about the size of a drum kit relative to what
one can make it do. But I think the initial post (concerning Lars' 5 piece set
as lame) has to do with the alternabands trying to keep the cheap garage band
look and going minimalist. I agree. Lars is a 70 piece player! To go to 5
pieces is a pretty good indication of stylistic sell-out. I haven't seen the
vid, but am looking forward to it. IMO, many alterna-drummers don't need big
kits because they can barely perform on what they've got already. LATER-

Yeah...could be. Whatever...It's not like I'm trying to unravel some
huge significant mystery of our time (i.e., how to have world peace,
cure to AIDS, end to poverty). It's no big deal. Anyway, at the risk of
being obtuse, I still think it's the talk box. :) Thanks for your

yeah...I forgot about that one. I'm sure fuzz wahs sound far different from
    my old crybaby.

Oh...did I say that? Didn't mean to. Meant to say that the sound during

Don't like industrial??? Ummmm .. I do :) NIHIL is alright but definately
KMFDM's least industrial album. Try something like Money or even Angst if you
want a more industrial sound. Even better is Front Line Assembly's Tactical
Neural Implant. That is an awesome industrial disc. Or even try informatik
or din_fiv (check em out at http://www.sinless.com) Yes, friends of mine,
but they do some great stuff. informatik did an industrial version of
Immigrant Song by LedZep. Real cool :) The din_fiv CD just came out
today or yesterday, so I haven't heard it yet, but have heard its amazing.

Well ... that's all from me fer now

    Hey all,

First a short review of Soundgarden's newest. Then a political diatribe
on Vanessa Mae (Flame me if you like. I won't give a shit. I'm
entrenched in my views. You probably are too. So let's just meet on
common ground like DT & music, the reason we're all here. I'm just a
little pissed about Vanessa Mae. If you're not entrenched in your views,
maybe I can offer something new to think about.) Lastly, a shred of DTC...

    > Has anyone heard the new Soundgarden disc yet??? Is it worth getting? I=
    > would appreciate any reviews of this. =

Umm...I just got it. Don't like it incredibly much. I was kind of bored
by it. Maybe that's because I was listening to Metropolis right before
I popped Cornell, Thayil, Cameron & Shepard, Esqs. into the CD player. :)
Man...Is it true that DT is working on Metropolis--Part II. Damn...if they
are...Back to Soundgarden DotU: I liked it better the second time I
listened. Right now I don't care for it much, but it sounds like an
album i could get into. Definitely wasn't blown away on first listen like
with I&W. But that's kind of a given around here. :)

I think that you're absolutely correct about her marketing situation.
She seems very gimmicky, but, I think, there is a more ominous side to
all of this. Being an Asian-American myself, I was ill-at-ease with the way
she was being sold to the US record buying public. Okay...here I go on to the
soapbox. I'm ready to be flamed for my politics:

It seems to me that often when those of Asian descent are "packaged", they
aren't just plain old people. There's the "cute little prodigy" to bank
on that kind of "model minority" stereotype: "oh those Asians...Man,
they're smart. They all play classical piano before they can drink from
a sippy cup, and they move on to the violin before they can even tie their
shoes! Don't get too close, though. They're geeky. Oh and those Chinese
and their raw fish and dog meat! Eeeeww!" It's pretty fucking dehumanizing
to put Asians into such categories, and, of course, to make $$$$$$
Vanessa Mae is getting packaged like that or is packaging herself like
that. Both are scary. Why: why should she have to be packaged like that?
why would it be profitable for her to do that? That's just plain wrong.

Now let us turn to something even more insidious. It touches
upon women's AND minority issues: a double whammy for women of color.
The "cute" part of Vanessa Mae's image is problematic. BTW, I'm a
painfully heterosexual male, and I think she's darn good-looking! :) Back
to the point, it's kind of weird to think that maybe the "cute little
virginal Oriental girl" part of her image is also being used by a label
that doesn't have much sensitivity for such issues. There is, of course,
the spectre of the Madonna/whore dichotomy: "Oh she's such a cute little
thing, so pure and wholesome, but you know...those exotic Asians...
they sure know lots about making you cum like ain't never cum before".

I don't think any minority should HAVE TO play on their stereotype to
make some cash. I'm not criticizing her, because hell, if it pays the
bills, fine. Take the stereotype and ream the fetishizers and bigots up the
ass with the price of your CD. Take your revenge in the form of taking
their disposable income out of their wallets. Turn the wrongs into
positives. How's that for empowerment?!? Maybe that's what Madonna's
Boy Toy thing was all about.

    DTC (told you so...):
I'm sure John Myung probably doesn't think about it often, but he's one
of the few Asian rock musicians to make any $ in the US market. You have
your James Iha and your Shonen Knife, who are still pretty underground, I
imagine. Why do Myung and Iha make a living without scary "packaging"? I
think that's because they've got some pretty enlightened fans, in general.
Probably, it helps that Myung and Iha are male and they're actually from
    America (unlike Shonen Knife).

    > Aside from her technical ability, I have no respect for her. Just check
    > the credits on the CD and see how many of the tunes she actually wrote or
    > arranged, zero if I remember correctly. And does the guy who wrote/arranged
    > the tunes ever get to be in the spotlight? Not a chance.

    See...that's just it. She's pretty. She's a model minority. She's young.
She can use the Madonna/whore dichotomy. Of course, she's Asian and
looks really young; that way we can pull in the pedophilic folks. Woo-hoo!!
What wide demographic appeal Vanessa Mae has!!! Hooray for those who
stand to make money exploiting her. She's marketable. My main point is that
she's marketable in frightening ways. If she's exploting
herself, that's a little bit better to me (see my revenge and
empowerment point above). Anyway...enough of my liberal-in-academia style
    diatribe.

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! Sorry I haven't written in so long. But anyways, here's
little bit of info. First of all, I spoke to my travel agent and
basically, all of the hotels in NJ near the NYC area are all booked, so my
apologies to the people in NJ! Secondly, the ytsecon will be held on
Columbus Day Weekend. The event itself will be on October 12th, which is
    a Saturday.

I already found a place for the con, but I will not release that info
until I get all of the prices and when I talk to all of the guys I am
working with (aka the YtseCon III staff) =). So far, it looks really
good! I will post again in about a day or so with a lot of more info
(including prices). Until then, keep posted to the jam!

    Yours,
    Jeff =)

    Hey ytse folks-

As I was listening to "and justice for all" last night, I though of some
people who look like some of the guys in Metallica:

Well, the bassist, Jason Newstead (sp?) looks like Kevin Moore.

Kirk Hammett looks like the 1-2-3 Kid of the World Wrestling Federation.

And the best one I thought (even though it's not related to Metallica):

John Petruuci looks like David Grohl of Foo Fighters/Nirvana.

I'm sure no one will agree with my analogies since no one ever does, but
    who cares.

Ok, enough of that IMHO crap...on with the spam.

This is true. I suppose I ought to hang my head in shame, as I am no
longer worthy to post among you. There was once a time in my life when
I would not drop everything for Dream Theater. (I remember having a
friend named John around then, too.) The two hour drive to see a show
I had already seen at the Malibu just didn't appeal to me. Then again,
I wasn't born in Kings Park.

Dream Theater eventually grew on me. Now, I can honestly say that Dream
Theater is my second favorite band (another sin!). I suppose that the
more intelligent posers - er, posters - like Mithrandir here, were
genetically coded to realize that Dream Theater is the reason for
existence. But, I am only human. It took me a while to appreciate
everything involved in Dream Theater. I know, I know. I should have
been sleeping in front of the record store the day WDADU came out. But
I wasn't. I became a fan sometime between Awake and ACoS. Horror of
    horrors!

You managed to play the Lars-ish line in time, for once. You couldn't
handle the Mike-ish line you came up with. But I digress.

All bow to the wonderful Ytsebeing that is Mithrandir! I shall go hide
in the corner like the second-class Ytse-citizen that I am. I suppose,
too, that I should sell all my DT albums and boots, since I'm not a
"true DT fan." Would that make you feel better, John?

    P.S. There's a reason I don't return your phone calls.

(Friday, people should just bug around the music scene) is the Chicago Draft
House...a pretty cool bar that is available and more entertaining than a hotel
meeting room could be here in Chicago...plus Bigman might be able to hook-up!
:) This location MIGHT change, but looks extremely promising.

Hotel: Day Inn on Diversey (where many bands stay while playing Chicago). A
laid back, clean hotel right in the middle of the busy Lincoln Park area. One
mile from Wrigley Field and 3 miles from the Magnificent Mile. It's $84/night
for a four person room (sneak another in to cut costs! :) ).

You must call and reserve via credit card YOURSELF. The rooms (15 as of now...
do we need more?) are under my name...Steve Johnson. You must reserve no later
than July 12 and cancel no later than 4 p.m. day of arrival. Parking in around
the corner for $7/24 hrs. EVRYTHING is a walk or short cab away..even Lincoln
Park Zoo!. The general manager's name is Kat. (312) 525-7010...646 W.
    Diversey.....WRITE IT DOWN!

Please e-mail me when you make your reservations (for head count). Also lemme
kno if you DO NOT have four or more in your group so we can find you money
saving roomates! If you need e-mail addresses of other's who've expressed
interest in attending for rides/roomates, etc. lemme kno where you're coming
from! I'll do what I can to help and make this not only a cultural blast, but
    as economic as possible!

I am working with the bar owners to get private space with pool, darts, etc.
as well as drink specials (non-alcoholic, too) and a bunch of food. It could
be a very good Saturday night. There are also some great brunch places in the
area as well as killer ribs/gyros..all the good stuff ya find in the big city.

I look forward to hearing from ya and hope the turnout is EXCELLENT! LATER-

    Steve

to a point, maybe. like i said, *in my experience* rythmn cannot be
taught. i've been playing for 18 years and i've known alot of musicians.
i've never seen anyone go from playing with absolutely no rythmn to being
able to play in 4/4 time, or even prog, such as Seth is doing. i think
rythmn is something that you either have or you don't. perhaps someone
with some rythmn could improve with the help of a metronome, but i've never
seen anyone learn how to play in time. it's something you feel, ya know?

but like i said, that's just been in my experience. i never said that was
the rule, or that it was a fact written in stone.

Which you just about did! And, if anybody purposely reposts a whole digest,
I'll rip their (not there or they're) throat out and shove it up their left
    nostril.

    > Aside from her technical ability, I have no respect for her. Just check

    >the tunes ever get to be in the spotlight? Not a chance.

What about musicians that play in a huge symphony orchestra? They
didn't write the music they play. Do you have no respect for them either?
Maybe the person who wrote it is completely unable to play a musical
instrument. Should he just write music and let it sit there collecting dust,
or give it to somebody like Vanessa Mae to play (rhyme!)? She was doing him
    a favor! Sheesh.
