Okay. The jam has had posts very recently concerning progressive, and "what
is progressive?", etc. I heard an album, yes an ALBUM a few years ago with
time meter changes and tempo changes GALORE. Scott Cook has heard of them,
he's an old dude like myself. They are called Captain Beyond. They had 2
    releases that I know of.

The first release was simply titled Captain Beyond. It came out on Capricorn
records in 1972. The first song is Dancing Madly Backwards (On A Sea Of
Air). It begins with a really cool and simple drum beat that I had no
trouble playing, until I took the time to figure out what time meter the song
started in. It is 5/4. Unusual at the time, I thought. I put on the
    headphones and started playing along....

Woah! What's this? Meter change.... Sounds like 4/4. Wait, back to 5/4.
{Headache ensues} After listening to the whole album repeatedly for months,
I gave it up for some Pat Travers and digressed from there.

One day a couple years ago, on a buying excursion, I came across the damn
thing on cd. Whatta relief. I bought it, as an import, and paid the price.
(you can't tell me you haven't done the same thing. I know how jammers
    think).

I took it to work the other day and put it in the player and turned it up
LOUD!!! The guys around me just kinda stared at the "lunatic" on the
airdrums. It felt good to hear it again. After counting out the songs, one
after the other, I found that the band used numerous time meter changes
throughout the whole thing. I heard 4/4, 7/8, 5/4, 6/8, and at least a few
measures of 9/8. It got hard to keep track.

The feeling of satisfaction after hearing the whold cd again can only be
compared to, uh, well, use your imagination.

If you feel like taking a chance on some classic rock imports (this one from
Japan on Polydor), buy Captain Beyond's first one. You won't be
    disappointed.

Now, a little history on the band. The singer, Rod Evans, was the original
singer for Deep Purple. He sang Kentucky Woman and the song Hush. The bass
player, Lee Dorman, played with Iron Butterfly. Remember Innagaddadavida?
The drummer, Bobby Caldwell, has been around for years. He is a session
    drummer, if memory serves....

    Anyhow, back to the jam.

That's not what I meant at all, but I don't feel like trying to reword it. I certainly
respect her playing, cause she's definitely got skills, and I know what it's like to
spend hours in the practice room. She could be completely sincere, that being the case
    then I'm the arse.

Certainly not, I would probably sell her a couple of tunes myself (do I hear cries of
"kill the hypocrite!" from various ytsejammers?) :)

When I compose something that gets performed there is a little bit of selfishness
inside me that wants to receive due credit. I mean, in most cases I've put all of
myself into said peice and it's like you're standing there naked in front of the
audience. Your reward is the audience's reaction. I think we're saying pretty much
    the same thing.

With all due respect, Seth, you can in no way justify this statement. This is simply a
myth that continues to be propagated. If you walk into your local Lutheran church and
flip through the hymnal, you'll probably find that more than half of the hymns were set
    to music BY Bach.

I think I had a good point there with the Beethoven thing, but I couldn't get it into
words like I wanted to. I was speaking more of the possibility of a composer's music
being performed, not about the composer's reputation. Your points have been taken into
    consideration.

Thanks to Ben and Matt and everyone who contributed to this discussion. It's nice to
be able to talk about something intelligently and without flames. Usually my comments
    just get ignored. :)

This goes out to the guy who just started a band with a keyboard player that
    has no Rhythm.

I know some folks are gonna jump all over me for saying this, but after years
and years of experience with many bands/players, I can tell you this:

Rhythm is natural, and you aint got it, you aint got it. You can't take someone
that has NO NATURAL timing/rhythm and make them learn to feel it. You may be
able to get them better than they are now, but fact that they have no natural
    timing will always show.

I sympathize with your frustrations...I'm no John Petrucci, but I do have
excellent timing and rhythm. One of the guys that jams with us here at my house
has no timing...the guy can play anything right from a chordal or arrangement
standpoint, and he has actually taught me difficult songs not for note,
but put him with the band and he is all out of synch. No rhythm..UGH! I feel
bad for him, but no matter how hard we try to help him hold it together with us
    he just can't.

I guess my point is kind of a grim one: there is probably no helping your
keyboardist, and no matter how good the rest of the band is, one member with
no timing can make you sound like shit. I hope fr your sake that you find another
keybd player, and that the one you have now will understand and there are no hard
    feelings...very tough situation...good luck.

    Subject: Metallica sell-out?
    Message-ID: <960526154451_204334291@emout08.mail.aol.com>

I've been into Metallica since I was a freshman in high school (this was
at the time of the Master of Puppets release). I started my collection with
their first album (Kill 'em All), then proceeded to purchase the albums in
order of release. One of the great things about the band was the fact that
their music grew with them... changing from album to album... The Black album
(and most probably the new one) represented yet another chapter in their
careers... a new change. One thing that always disappoints me about many
bands is that they reach a point of stagnation... where they can't grow and
change anymore... Metallica obviously haven't fallen into that trap... Call
it "selling out" if you will... I call it "maturing"... "remaining fresh"...
    "maintaining originally."
Furthermore... the term "selling out" implies that money has been made
as a result of a contrived change. The reality of the situation (sad or not)
is that Metallica could put out an album of ANYTHING and still sell millions
of copies. The changes that the band has made might be self-indulgent, but
it certainly hasn't helped them sell too many more records than they would
    have already.
Assuredly there will be many flames to this post... many in
disagreement... but let's keep debate on a mature level where real points can
be addressed. If people are concerned about a lack of DT content, I humbly
apologize but the point was brought up and I felt compelled to respond.

Let's see. The first tape I remember buying was the Back to the
Future soundtrack (and I still have it). I don't remember the first vinyl,
but it may have been Weird Al's Dare to be Stupid. I think the second tape
I bought may have been "Then and Now... the Best of the Monkees" (I still
have that one, too). CD's I'm not completely sure about, but my first boot
CD was Acoustic Dreams (DT content), so I guess that should count for
something (thanks Mike - you rule!).

T-shirts for Mytse-Con get in touch with me immediately. I'd prefer you

just don't have one, e-mail me. If price is what's holding you back,
    they're probably gonna run between $10 - $12. I can't give a final
number until I know how many orders I'll be placing, though.
If you know someone who is interested in this, and isn't on the
'jam for the summer, let me know how I can get in contact with them.
    That'd be great. Thanks.
Guess that's all. Look forward to hearing from all of you. Later...

Midori. The Ytsejam's own Bafu Vai recommended her to me a while back. I
have heard Paganini's 24 Caprices done before. I was never moved by any of
them until I heard Midori play them... Buy her CDs.

Now if you're not into people who don't compose their own music, classical
guitarist Liona Boyd writes many original pieces, while she has "worked
within the system" and has built up a sizable repertiore of classical guitar
pieces. IMHO, I do enjoy her original compositions more than her repertiore
pieces, but her take on classical guitar is still top-notch. Buy her CDs.

Damn Skippy, Mr. Laussade! But I beg to differ on one point. People *do*
get pissed off for rappers sampling other musician's music and looping it.
Van Halen sued 2 Live Crew for using the riff from "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout
Love" several years ago. But yeah, be grateful for the music. Granted, a
lot of the bands we love here on Ytsejam do write almost all of their music,
performing other people's music isn't really that deplorable.

It's been said before. There is still something to be said for exectution,
and there's a lot to say. Let's just say that repertiore and compositional
skills are two things you might have to do to be considered a musician (oh
no! not that debate again!) However, IMHO, you have to do one or the other
at the very least, and of course, being able to do both certainly helps.

And yes. The composer did succeed in bringing music to the masses. A lot of
people may not know who wrote that piece, but it is still acknowledged in
    some way or another.
Do you really think some idiot is going to think Midori wrote the 24
    Caprices?

         Hello there boys and girls!!!!

In a recent post I asked a trivia question about "My dear Wormwood" I
was surprized to see how many of you knew the answer. Have any of you
actually read "The Screw tape letters" Ironiclly The song is part of a
subdivision ( shameless Rush reference) of songs entitled Letters, kind of
funny. Someone asked what the things in "Settled Land" refered to, well I
don't know, but there is a quote from Pennywise the clown "We all float down
here" maybe it has something to do with "It". Wormwood is actually contained
in the book of Revalations as a star which forbodes the end of the world, it
is also a plant, sort of a weed that grows now quite rampantly near Chernobyl.

Wedge in reference to what we talked about the other night, I forgot
to mention that I liken them to Rodney Dangerfield, and Ted Knight in
    Caddyshack.

Looks like the Detroit Red Wings are the New New York Rangers, what
do they call it? The Heimlich maneuver!!!!!!!

I just finished " The Treason of Isengard" now I get to start " The
War of the Ring". I think I have way too much free time. My book of
questions is coming along very well, if anyone would like to participate in
the stump Mithrandir contest, just E-Mail me. Karri from Finland has been a
tremendous help. Anyone who knows a lot about "The Lord of the Ring" and
    related material is welcomed aboard.

Has anyone heard this band before? I have some of their demo stuff, but I've
never heard anyone here mention them. A few years ago, the brother of someone
in the band sent them to me (they're from Norway I think... Or somewhere around
there) and said they were trying to ink a deal, but then he lost his email
access, and I havn't heard from him since (this was about 4 years ago -- he
was on the ytsejam). If anyone has any info on them, please let me know,
    they were pretty good.

mainly, if there were any out there. Mike Bahr did manage to have a list
of names to reassure this person.

Well, I am curious to know if there are any other DT fans in South

    close to me).

I'd like to hear from you if you are out there. Contact me at
