Hey, it's Scott, wearily machete-ing my way through AOL's hackneyed shit
service. Man, I miss my high-speed Ethernet direct net connection. Man, I
miss Netscape and Eudora and IRC and all that groovy internet stuff. Man, I
miss intelligently-designed interfaces. This damn service is a PIECE.
Whenever I see that AOL commercial on TV, I get the urge to reach through
the screen and brutally throttle that smiling fucker and shove all those
freakin' free AOL disks up his shitter. Like I want help on my golf swing,
you BITCH. (I have been SUCKING down the crack lately... can you tell?)

But all you fellow Ytse-AOL'ers, I salute you. We shall overcome. They may
try their damndest, but not even their mindmanglingly imbecilic excuse for an
online service will keep me from my Ytsejams. THIS I SWEAR, ON YOUR MOMMA.

And just for the record: "Me too"

So I'm back from the Beach. Quite the experience. Aside from living off of
Hot Pockets (and Lean ones), Cool Ranch Doritos (they're actually "Cooler"
now, and the bag is appetizingly emblazoned with David Robinson's armpits),
and Froot Loops (including the new Smurf-Blue ones), and being totally waxed
6 nights in a row, there were a few other points o' interest that actually
show a glimmer of relevance to Today's Topics.

    1. A chilling number of upperclassmen and pep-band alums who wholeheartedly
dig Rush. Almost every night, while we were all sitting outside drinking,
playing Asshole, and just chilling, roaring out of the nearby ghetto blaster
were various Rush albums, legit releases and not. An outstanding atmosphere.
(Not to mention that Rush was the driving music of choice on the way down to
Myrtle with my ride, nor that alum Mike Fuchs played Broon's Bane while we
traded strums on the old acoustic.)

    2. While sitting around with the posse listening to some good old Black
album (oops, I mentioned them), a frantic Wade "Mr. Face" Craig runs from his
car, flips on the radio, spins the dial, and what emerges from the speakers
but the strains of Bohemian Rhapsody from The Big Medley by none other than
Dream Theater!! Yeah, on the radio! It was a truly triumphant Jammer
moment. I drank on all of your behalves. Wade himself is an AD-owning
ex-jammer of the arastar era, and there were a couple of other non-jam DT
fans lurking about (oh no, I just used an internet word to describe real
life, argh). They do walk amongst us. Like that movie, They Live.

    3. Four words: Gwar on the beach. 'Nuff said. (Ultimate Frisbee doesn't
get much more surreal. "Well, that was fun! Let's eat!")

    4. Got drunk, watched Tori Amos on the Conan O'Brien show with this girl
from Colorado (don't ask) who's also a Tori-worshipper like myself. Saw
Twister the next night, grooved to the Tori tune, feasted my eyes on Helen
    Hunt.

    5. Heard that Woo-hah tune WAY too much. Where is Koba when you need
    him...?

But all this is why we must, someday, have Ytse-Beach Week. It'll be like
the MTV Beach House, only better. I'm sure Trey Allen can get some
    Ytse-Speedos made...

I must also jump on the bandwagon and join the BBAKA (the Bernd Basmer
Ass-Kissing Association). My copy of Superior's behind [beaten-to-death joke
omitted] was waiting for me when I got home to funky old Texas, and it is
excellent. Get it. Joe Kruger mentioned the musical precision and clean,
tight production-- yes. All there. Guitars, heavy and crisp. Snare drum,
high-pitched and cutting. Piano, woohoo! Proving that piano and metal
guitar can actually go together. Nicely done, Bernd, it's a very cool
fuckin' album. And now I know what you look like... well, just the left side
    of your face, anyway.

Jason Skewes, thanks for the distribution. I especially enjoyed sucking the
chocolate coating off the CD-- I think you guys may have stumbled upon a
    groundbreaking new marketing ploy! Mmmm-mmmm.

    And that's it.

    Scott.
    More Waffles, Please.

Got a message from a friend who said that there is a possibility that
Dream Theater and Rush may tour together in the fall/winter. Supposedly,
the management of both bands are talking.

Now I would consider this a dream come true. I have yet to see either
band live, and to see both on the same night would be awesome.

When I brought this bit of rumor/news up on the IRC channel, some people
were against it, saying that DT would not be able to play long enough. I
saw, let both bands play as long as they want to. I don't mind it if
they play all night! Start at 7, have DT play 110 minutes, 30 minutes of
break, Rush plays for 2 hours, go home at 11:30 roughly. I can handle that.

Anyway, I think this would be the ultimate tour, if it happens. I would
drive/fly a long ways to see it if I had to, as I would not want to miss it.

    Well, let the discussion begin.

Listen, boy, when 'Jammers become irate over incorrect sig. files with DT
    references, i.e. "...It's a hundred degrees I can't _breath_", or which song
"Death is the first dance, eternal" is in, I have every right to bring up a
    valid
point. Who's bragging? Someone replied to your sig, and it looked like
they thought you came up with it, when you didn't. I don't care what you write
on your teeny-bopper binder, or what you sing, but when everyone else cites
the sources in their sigs, that's the least you can do. Take a look at Steven
Johnson's or Daniel McCormack's sigs, for example. The "Plagiarism Police"
    are on standby alert, Benny.

Is it just me, or did I miss it? Come forth, o ye with the secret or
I'll rile up the natives by stating that:

Over their is Dream Theatre, an Alternative group who's first album,
Images and Words, was IMHO, a packaged, commercial piece of work receiving a
lax following by the head-bangers and grunge-heads. And Charlie Dominici
was a great fit for the band and will be sorely missed...

This is only my opinion, but I think the reason Myung and Iha are
making money is because they are great musicians in great bands and
don't walk around promoting the fact that thery're "minorities." Jimi
Hendrix is an example of this too. I've read and seen interviews of
Hendrix, and I don't remember him ever talking about all the struggles
he had being a black man in rock and roll. Bottom line, he was a
telented musician playing incredible music, and that's all that
    matters.

Like I said, this is only my opinion.

Well hello there boys and girls!!!!

Obviously the D-man has taken yet another one of my comments out of
context. As was evident I was only joking. If any of you guys could really
handle some of the flames that take place when we get together I would be
    surprised.
My whole reson for writing the message I wrote was because D-man,
Mojo, and myself all played in a band called pawn shop in 1994. I was big
into DT back then and my band mates were not. We had some creative
differences and I was asked to leave without being asked to leave, actually
I had been replaced about a month and a half before I was told by Mojoman. I
wanted to go in a more DT direction, but I guess I was overruled. I guess it
was O.K. since it was not my band anyhow, but I still felt extremely pissed
off, hell I was going to leave anyway, but I felt like Sid Barret. Then when
Wedge got into DT, I just found it rather ironic. He had always loved Rush,
and rightfully so, but now he loved DT also. I just like to look back now
and have a good laugh about it. No Chris, don't go selling all your DT
stuff, we all still love you, and we'll even let you post once in a while.

P.S. Scott, that was the Lord of the Nazgul you were quoting. A more
appropriate Grey Pilgrim quote would be "You may come no further. You may
not pass. I am the wielder of the flame of Anor, go back to the darkness
    from whence you came"

Sorry to single you out Andy - a few other people have said that rhythm can't

But it was only after your post that I decided to say something...

    ------------------------------

But really. I will be the first to admit that my rhtymic chops were the
weakest part of my overall technique. But in recent months, I've paid some
serious attention to it, and now I think I've seriously improved. Compared
to the "musician" I was a year ago, I got some serious rhythm goin' on
    now!!!

I learned it, and so can Seth's keyboard player! However, it may be his
dismissal from the band that causes him to learn rhythm...

Greetings Everybody,Just getting back in regards to Vanessa-Mae.Not
always wanting to listen to the same thing,I added Vanessa's "The
Violin Player" to my play list a while ago.Was really surprised when I
saw her name pop up on here.I sum her up as a very talented lady who
has a very bright future. Her versions of "Classical Gas",and "Toccata
and Fugue in D minor" are just pure fun to listen to.Maybe because of
her age,or just the fact that it's her first solo effort, that I have a
hard time saying anything really bad about her.For the record, she did
help write one song on "The Violin Player".It's called "Red Hot",and
gives the C.D. itself a nice finish. I'm very interested in
hearing what she has to offer down the road.Something tells me whatever
it is,it will be well worth the price of the C.D.
                                                                      For
folks who like music in that vain, and can't stand John Tesh,I recommend
a band called "The California Guitar Trio".They did back-up for King
Crimson when I saw them in New Orleans on their last tour.Watching them
do "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" just blew me away.
                                                                   Got too
burned in the pool yesterday doing the old in and out.Nothing like the
great outdoors.Hoping not to run out of aloe.Later from Houston Town,
and don't tell the old lady I said anything-G.B.

You know, while I was writing, I thought about that possible contradiction,
because I'm a huge fan of orchestral classical music. So here goes: those two
situations are completely different. Beethoven wrote his 9th Symphony. It was destined
to get performed because he had built a solid reputation as being a magnificent
composer. On the other hand, Joe Blow wrote a couple of tunes to be played by a
pretty, young, Asian prodigy. In my mind that's marketing at it's finest (and sickest).

However, my main complaint is this: All of the lazy listeners of Vanessa Mae
(note that I did NOT say that all of her listeners are lazy), my parents for example,
have no idea that she did not write ANYTHING on her album. Therefore, they say things
like "Oh, she's so wonderful" thinking that she's both a fine player and composer. In a
concert setting the listener is made aware of who the composer is, and they can
attribute to him or her the respect that is so rightly deserved. Indeed, there is room
for both in a concert setting: "Boy, that Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber sure is
beautiful." "Yeah, and didn't the Saint Louis Symphony do a nice interpretation of it?"

Well, since my major is Composition, primarily in the modern classical genre,
I've got a lot to say about this topic. But since this is not the "Composition in
Modern Society" mailing list, I'll spare those who couldn't care less.

But I can't leave without saying that the reason that we all love DT is because
they are fabulous players and they write great songs. I don't know about you, but I
would feel a little guilty about liking the guys if I found out that someone else was
writing all those cool tunes. Sheesh back atcha.

    Sea cows,

Hey, I taped that one!!! I can remember when they were coming back from the
break and Metallica was on stage playing Led Zeppelin's "How Many More
Times!" It probably had to be THE BEST eMpTyV video music awards (apart
from losers like Paula Abdul, Mariah Carey, and CC Music Factory perfoming
on there)! QR did a kick-ass version of Silent Lucidity whith a huge
orchestra! VH made it start off rockin'! If anyone wants a copy (of the
good parts) you can e-mail me.

Ha ha ha, very funny. If you please, do not use that Jekyll/Hyde
thingamajig anymore, I have put up with that for years. It's not funny anymore.
That doesn't mean that I'm mad at you though...how could I expect you to
