    Hi all

some people have been mailing their pet hates about the jam recently, so here
    are mine:

    1. Smilies (I really hate them)

    2. Huge sig. files (The jam is bad enough, but go look at the My Dying Bride
list if you want to see a real waste of band width)

    3. People who write in abbreviations (how the hell are new people supposed to
work out what's going on when all they see is crap like ACoS, T3 and PMU?)

    4. Long quotes (one or two lines should be sufficient)

    5. Flames sent to the jam instead of to the person being flamed

    6. Distinct lack of cocktail recipies (tried a DypsoJam yet?)

    7. Distinct lack of humour (preferably politically incorrect)

    8. Distinct lack of Dream Theater content (who they?)

    9. Distinct lack of Graham Borland (where the hell are you Graham?)

    Nuff said.

    stay safe and happy listening

If anyone can find the connections between microeconomics, macroeconomics,
financial accounting, statistics, calculus, law...and Marketing, let me
know. Because I sure don't see them.

Just thought I'd post a few times since I've gotten a few e-mails asking
if I'm still alive. Yes I'm alive. The past week has been extremely busy.
For all those who have already been out of school for several weeks, my
finals aren't until NEXT week. My monstrous academics have been taxing my
mind and attitude. A month's worth of my writings was recently erased, a
small catastrophe that discourages me to no end. Plus I just haven't seen
much reason over the last 25 digests to post. So I guess I'll load up my
literary midi-gun and cap off a few rounds.

The limits are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have chain rules to keep, and
miles of functions to derivate before I sleep.

Shit! Somehow I got switched over to the Impatience mailing list. I used to be on a Well Aware That DT Hasn't Had Any Releases In Over Six Months So We'll All Wait A Little Longer list, but something strange happened.

    > At least most of you guys were thoughtful enough to include "NDTC" in > your header, but really, what does Metallica have to do with Dream > Theater?

They both play heavy music. Metallica heavily influenced Dream Theater. Dream Theater has covered a song by Metallica. What you really ought to be asking is "What does Iron Maiden have to do with Dream Theater?" since DT has repeatedly stated in interviews that they've never heard of Iron Maiden and probably wouldn't like their music even if they were to listen to it.

    > Yea, I know DT covered one of their songs, and part of PMU has a > dino-stomp-kinda-groove going for awhile, but many of us here can't > stand Metallica and don't want to know about their single.

Guess what, many of us here can't stand your complaining and don't want to know what you disapprove of.

Gosh. Bruce Lee was nowhere near 6'3" and 210lbs. Guess that's why he never challenged you to a fight. :)

Let's see, what can I offer other than reactions...

The new King's X album, "Ear Candy," ranks up there with "Faith Hope Love." "Dogman" was nice and heavy, but this album is just more filling. Plus the drumkit sounds like it's in the room with you. Some of the grooves on this disc just rock too hard, which is what was lacking from "Dogman" - groovy hooks. EC is more booty-shaking and less stomping.

King's X relates to Dream Theater because I say it does. No one on this entire list other than Ryan Skadberg can stop me from posting, so if your hatred of King's X outweighs your love of Dream Theater, unsubscribe.

I think R. Jurado raised valid points about the promotion of Mae's'image' to market her album, (BTW I have the album, and it's ok, I bought it on hearing it first, and yes because the CD cover is great ;) ).

I read an interview with the marketing/promoter of the album in which they quite openly admitted their strategy of using Mae as a Lolita with violin e.g. photo shoots of her playing the violin whilst emerging out of the sea covered in a wet and VERY thin top...AND it worked since she done tour of the UK and the album done quite well.

Does anybody remember Nigel Kennedy and his 'Four Seasons'. He is also a violin player that was marketed to appeal to the 'masses' His image was of a 'working-class, Arsenal football/soccer fan, real-lad, bloke type'. Putting aside the fact that he is talente d and professional, I think everybody just became cynical and gave up; magazines showed pictures of him as 'he really is', and he looked just like the typical precocious/bratty child prodigy.

    Thanks for reading,

I don't talk about Yes or Rush. Ever. But I was attracted by DT's technical abilities. So I'm 3/4 Group 1 and 1/4 Group 2. A ytsemutt.

I would venture to say that we were all like this at one point. What you have outlined here is the larva stage of DT fandom.

I finally got to see Twister over the weekend. Like others who have wrote reviews here, the special effects were incredible. This is one of those movies that you must see in the theater with an incredible sound system. It was awesome. The instrumental by Alex and Eddie Van Halen is played at the end for the credits. YOu must sit and watch until the end. They show all these pictures of the country and this song that rocks keeps playing. You must see this movie.

After I saw it I was like "WOW". There is a plot to this movie although it is not much of a plot...

Jimi > Hendrix is an example of this too. I've read and seen interviews of

I wholeheartedly agree. Myung, Iha, and Hendrix are talented musicians. The issue is..."Who else is also talented that can't be heard, because their minority image and, perhaps their music, doesn't make them marketable in record execs' eyes?"...not people promoting themselves or hollering about injustice. The issue I raise is one involving something more "institutional" or more "record business" than musicians whining about their struggles as minorities. It's an issue that's related to some of the following questions: Why are there so few Asian-American actors on the same pay scale as terrible actors (IMO) like Tom Cruise? Why are they relegated to groundbreaking (IMO) TV networks like Fox? Why is it that when Margaret Cho gets a TV show on ABC it's a show that makes fun of Asians rather than showing them in a more positive and human light (Yeah...I know that's part of Margaret Cho's shtick, and much comedy is making fun of people white, or otherwise.)? Why does it have to be a comedy? Why are there so few Asian-based dramas when "The Joy Luck Club" can do a decent job raking in the $$? Why are such films automatically "art house" instead of big, money making, mature Hollywood fare for mature folks?

Of course, as someone who understands that show business is a business, I understand that Asian-Americans are a niche market, one that's not going to match the buying power of white America when it comes to "openning" a movie or something like that. That's fine. Playing the "market" like that is something that is an amoral issue to me, one does what one needs to do. What I find wrong is that playing the "market" has to be done, and that while playing the market, minorities often get less consideration for a big blockbuster project.

Anyway, all I've said are the philosphical musings of a bored, overeducated individual. Nevermind me... > From: Younis Youssef Hilal <yhilal@uclink.berkeley.edu> > > > empowerment point above). Anyway...enough of my liberal-in-academia style > > diatribe.

    > Yup, no shit...Reading your post reminded me of an Asian-American > Studies class as well as late-night discussions (sometimes arguments) I > used to have last year with a few of my dorm-mates (they were all > Asian-Americans, BTW).

Like I said...the philosophical musings of a bored, overeducated individual...Not that I don't think of some of those Asian Studies or Ethnic Studies classes lack merit. I dated someone very much attuned to that "culture", and I respected her very much for what she was trying to do with her life.

    Of course, I agree...

    Evenin' Everyone;

Well, I'm new to this list, and even though I've heard tons of stories about how you guys here are fast & furious with the flames, at least I hope that being a "first-timer" you'll bear with me. (?)

What I'd like to know, is if anyone out there have any tapes from DT's covers-gig at the Marquee last year...I know that parts of it is to be found on the "A Change of Seasons" CD, which is brilliant, but I'd love to have a copy of DT doing "Easter" by Marillion, as well as hearing Steve Hogarth, Bruce Dickinson and Steve Howe performing with the band.

So, if anyone out there can help me out, I'd be VERY happy!

Dream prospect for the perfect tour; Marillion & Dream Theater! :-) In Europe DT could support Marillion, in the USA the other way around. The perfect opportunity for both bands, if you ask me!

BTW, Am I the only one that thinks the new Metallica single sux bigtime?

As you know, Metallica's "The Wrath of God", which will open orders on July 4th (why? who knows...) is going to be priced at $20 because I am experimenting with a new CD company.

This trend will continue with Precious Things. I don't plan to open orders on this for a while yet, but the price will be $18. More to come in the near future!

Hello from a Maryland obviously soiled by Mojo's visit. Glad I wasn't walking under his hotel room window. 1. Bigman You are from Racine I see from your phone number. Odd. I am from there originally. 2. Gandalf/Mithrander-whatever You have no faith in the Wings. It's not over yet. 3. Skadz Obviously we are into the "damn-my-university-account-is -gone-because-it's-summer-and-I-am-too-cheap-to-pay-cash- for-an-internet-account" season. 4. New Cd's I bought Pantera, Scorpions, Non-Fiction, Memento Mori, Soundgarden, King's X, Prong all this week. First impressions: Pantera - GSTK - Road kill? Not too bad, not too good. These guys need to go back to the Cowboys from Hell-era. Can't this dude sing??? They could be so much better. Scorpions - New One - Can't remember the name, that shows you how much this cd impressed me. I used to love this band but, man they are TIRED! I hope this grows on me, but I am not holding much hope. Non-Fiction - It's a Wonderful Lie - ABOUT DAMN TIME I got this from CD Europe. This smokes. Good production, and good songs. Why, oh why, can't good bands get US record deals? Memento Mori - La Danse Macabre - Not bad. No more Messiah Marcolin and no more Snowy Shaw. Drums are mixed the same as before. Singer sounds like a conglomeration of all of Yngwie's singers. Swedish, I guess. As a matter of fact, this sort of sounds like Yngwie, only without Yngwie's guitar playing. Imagine that. Triplet heaven. Maybe this will grow, too. Soundgarden - Down on the Upside (whatever) - Not as immediately striking as the last two, but there is enough going on to justify repeated listenings. A quality band to emerge from a bad scene. Prong - Rude Awakening - Not much new ground here. It's Prong. If you like the last few records you'll like this. King's X - Ear Candy - Dumb name, and dumb album cover. But, nothing KX puts out is bad. This is one talented band. Not nearly as heavy as Dogman, but definitely KX. Fans of older KX will like it - fans of only Dogman may not. This is not a heavy metal record by any stretch. Best live band I have ever

seen. Everybody sings and everybody can play the hell out of his instrument. Buy this. -- Kevin (kwmadden@usa.pipeline.com) GO WINGS!!! Make Patrick go ROY!!!!!
