What instrument were they referring to? I'm sure alot of people would
find it really easy to play a gig doing continuous double kicks a la
MORBID ANGEL. By the way MORBID ANGEL are not fairly simple riff oriented
slop - maybe you sure first listen to one of their albums (especially
Domination) and check out the arrangements for yourself. It is not an
easy task to play really fast for the majority of the time. Morbid Angel
have one of the best guitartists and drummers in metal. And some of
CANNIBAL CORPSE's material has a fast, technical edge to it too - check
out Tomb of the Mutilated or The Bleeding. Finally - who said that a song
has to be complex to be good?

Actually, it was very common for classical composers to rework
other peoples pieces. Church hymns WERE used often (as quoted in my
college muisc theory class, which was unfortunatly rented, not purchased,
or I would use the examples from the book) as a BASIS for classical
melodies. Classical composers even reworked each other's pieces in order
to "improve" upon them. It is not uncommon for modern rock songs to borrow
the melodies of other songs to create a new song. For example, Sting uses
Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kij=E9 Suite as the melody of a section of "Russians.=
    "
Savatage used Beethoven's pieces in "Dead Winter Dead". Mozart's students
reworked Mozart's pieces (Requiem). Dream Theater using the Wheel of
    =46ortune theme.
The Lutherian church (whose hymns are Catholic in origin) does use
Bach's name on many of the hymns because the Catholic church commissioned
Bach to compose AND transcribe church pieces. The secular music had never
been written down so Bach took certain pieces and 'added his own flavor to
it". Same melody, differnt harmony/counterpoint=3D different song. This ha=
    s
been a well known fact and has been taught in every music theory course
that I have been presented. I hope I properly justified my statement.

Excuse me, but Beethoven was not an average "joe blow". His
playing impressed Bach (who was already held in high favor by the
courtisians) so much that Bach wanted to take on Beethoven as an aprentice.
Unfortuneatly, Bach up and died befor he could take on Mr. average child
prodgidy beethoven so Beethoven studied under another highly favored German
composer (the name escapes me). He was about as average as Michael
    Crawford!

Anyway, just my humble opinions and useless tidbits of trivia.
Can't wait for it to warm up so I can hit the lakes at a gallop!

    Cheers!

    Hiya folks,

Are any of you aware of the existence of alternate studio
versions/demos of any of the tracks on the albums. This would not
include edits for eMpTyV or versions which appear on Mike Bahr's CDs.
No offense intended Mike. I love SUB and AD.
I have the Take The Time demo from the TSM single and wondered
if there might be anything else like that floating around.
BTW, has anyone heard if there is to be any touring prior to
the recording of the new record? Since Kevin Gilbert was to produce
and recently passed away, the album is likely to appear in the distant
future. Hopefully, DT will take pity on us in the interim. Forgive me
if this sounds petty, but I've never seen these guys and, as far as
I'm aware, they haven't played Toronto since 1994 when the infamous
"Bad Back Jam" occurred. I wonder if the chiropractor who worked on
Mike's back was touring with them? If not, there's a guy out there
somewhere whose claim to fame is cracking Mike Portnoy's spine! :)
As far as guessing "The Secret" is concerned, I think that DT
will be releasing an OFFICIAL live video from the AWAKE tour or an
OFFICIAL release of the Ronnie Scotts show. Failing that, my guess
would be that Kevin has been signed to a major label. Well, what about
it Mr. Bahr? Was I close?

great band: Napalm Death. He claims that they are JL and JP's favorite
band. He can't explain to me their music, so I was wondering if any jammers
are familiar with this band, and if it is worth buying. Also i am surprised
that it is JL and JP's fav band. I was expecting something different.

    Hi all

this may already have been mentioned on the jam, but a lot of you are into
Fates Warning and I picked this info up while surfing the web today. The
    information is dated May 9th:

"US prog-metal band Fates Warning has recruited former Armored Saint bassist
Joey Vera as their new guitarist after the departed Frank Aresti. Vera was also once offered the job as the new bass player in Metallica after Cliff Burton's
    tragic death..."

Just thought some of you might like to know.

Does anybody know anything about the new band of ex-Kyuss frontman John Garcia?
The band is called Slo-Burn and started gigging in California. Are there plans
for an album, do they have a record contract etc? Any news on the other guys
from the band? Every scrap of information gratefully accepted.

    stay safe and happy listening

Something I came across a few days ago (and still can't take it out of
the stereo): an album called "Crimson" by a Scandinavian band called
"Edge of Sanity". I had already heard some of their older discs, and
wasn't particularly charmed, but this is something completely different.
What drew my attention was the back of the cover: the song list
    looked like this:
            Crimson 40:00
and instead there was a short poetic text, introducing the listener
into the spirit of the music - kinda like Peter Gabriel's poems-in-prose
in the early Genesis albbums. The music itself is breath-taking,
multilayered and elaborate. You can't possible take grasp of all the
details from the first few times you hear it. I still keep rediscovering
new themes and variations after 20+ hearings. The vocal is a decent growl,
not like Chuck Schuldinger's high-pitched scream (which doesn't really
    appeal to me).
Strongly recommended for fans of the heaviest reaches of prog-metal.

    cu.
    Assen

    Hi!

    WARNING: This message has DTC!

    [Multi-quote following]

    >>> Q: Wasn't he a drummer?
    >>> A: Yah... and I'm a piano player ;-)
    >>Was Portnoy being sarcastic here (as if he were responding to a rumor)
    >>or not? I couldn't tell for sure, and I've never heard of him playing
    >>anything but the drums.
    >
    >No, see that winking smiley face after Mike's quote - that means that
    >he was dead serious! ;^)

Absolutely... No, he really plays piano, guitar and everything, but he knows
that he's best on drums. James was indeed drumming a bit before he
concentrated on vocals. I was thinking of that when Mike said James does not
play an instrument, I just wanted to confuse him a bit, but no chance ;-)

    >Why does he get writers credit for all the songs, then?

Everyone in Dream Theater gets credits for the music. That's it.

    >Mike Portnoy mentioned Bob Rock as a possible producer for DT`s new album
    >in an interview some weeks ago!

That wouldn't be THAT bad, because Rock is one of the producers who just
gives the band the sound they want, and not the sound HE wants...

Just think of Purdell/Baron. Imagine you just knew that they had produced
Heart. You'd think immediately, they would produce a sell-out-DT-album.
They produced Awake instead, and they did a HELL of a good job!

you know, is he just dicking with me or is he telling the truth? is this
true jammers? am i more ignorant than a dumbass?

btw, the nice lady who APPRECIATES dt said that she filled out an order
for some dt stuff (shirts, stickers, etc.). if she is able to get this
stuff then this will be the first ANYTHING i have seen that is about dt
in any store i have been to in my life. never shop on mill in downtown

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! What's up? Anyways, the prices are in for the YtseCon III!!

First of all, the YtseCon III will take place at the La Guardia Marriot,
which means that those of you whoa re flying in won't have a hard time
    getting to the hotel!

Anyways, the date has been set to October 12th, in the afternoon from 1-5.
The prices for those of you who are staying at the hotel will be $99/room
per night. This is the same price as the first YtseCon, so I'm really
happy with the price considering the location of the hotel! I'm sure that
a bunch of you will be rooming with each other, that's cool! However, I
need to know how many of you will be taking a room. Can you please e-mail
Chris Merlo at cmerlo@cs.uvm.edu to let him know that you plan to take a
    room?

Also, the admission price for the YtseCon will be $17 per person. This
will cover the cost of the conference room.

If any of you have any questions at all, feel free to e-mail me at
jc309@columbia.edu. Please get back to us VERY SOON if you plan to take a
room! Anyways, I'll talk to you guys soon!

Yes, I do listen to classic rock at times. If you like hard rocking (not
borderline metal) get yourself some of Pat Travers early stuff. Putting It
Straight was one of his better releases. Crash and Burn was another good
one. I know what you are thinking, "Didn't he do a song called 'Boom, Boom,
Out go the lights?'. Yes, he did. It was on a live album called Go For
What You Know. Run out and buy it. Put on your Koss headphones and turn it
    up!!!!

More on Captain Beyond. I have gotten 2 personal e-mails from fellow
jammers about CB. It turns out that there were 3 releases. I only new of
the first 2. If you are feeling adventuous, go out and try to find some of
their stuff. It will be worth it.

What sort of wack-assed dictionary are you using? Racism? Are you
merely trying to draw attention to your posts (as if sheer magnitude
wasn't getting the job done), or are you as dumb as you come off? Look,
    the guy's not running a country, he's not hiring a secretary, he's
trying to decide whether to keep his friend in his band. That's a tough
place to be in. Been there? I have. With a few different friends.
You know what? I kicked 'em all out (some twice), and we're all still
friends. And not because I'm Irish/Italian, either, but because we all
came to grips with the art that we practice.

    English, motherfu... oh, never mind.
