show, that i will never forget. This Sunday i get to work with I Mother
Earth, as they are coming to my town, and I have the lovely job of setting
up for them. But G3, if it comes by dont miss, it or you will be sorry

Recently I saw a concert and I'd like to tell you about it.

Picture if you will, a bald English man sitting on a stool in the center
of the stage cracking jokes and telling of music from the time when music
    was music.

He then begins plucking his rather largish and strange looking guitar.
The acoustic tone if this thing is HUGE! It's so clear it sounds like it
has to be electric, but there's no knobs or whammies on this thing. It's
just him playing bass line, melody and harmony at the same time, making
it look like anyone could do it. Seeing him perform is amazing because
he sits there so still and lets his guitar speak. His hands move
dexteriously across the instrument like it's a part of his own form...

And then the most amazing thing happens. While he's plucking and
strumming, he reaches over and cranks one of his tuning knobs (at the top
of the neck of the guitar) DOWN A HALF STEP! When I first saw this, I
was in utter shock. I mean, usually people touch those knobs BEFORE the
concert, not during. It's like, that's the one part of the instrument
that the guitarist seems to HATE to touch, but they must, yet it's still
a chore to tune. Anyway, I figured either my eyes had deceived me, or
maybe he had gotten into another part of the song where it was required
of him to tune down. (Possibly a key change?)

But then he did it again. On another string. This is WHILE HE'S
PLAYING, mind you. He just nimbly gave it a twist and it went down a
half step and he seemed to think nothing of it, as if everyone could do
it. Well, as the song went on, he CONTINUED to re-adjust his strings,
tuning them up and down, giving the note that was played a sort of swoop
up or down (Kind of like a trombone's ability to do so). The at one
point in the song, he had one hand strumming while the other was
CONSTANTLY changing all 6 strings. Each note he played was "swooping" up
or down and it sounded PERFECT!

This man has single-handedly taken one of the most dreaded part of
playing a stringed instrument, tuning, and turned it into a plus, and
actually a joy to watch and hear! The one piece of the guitar that has
been neglected since the dawn of time suddenly is a new aspect to be
explored! Without the help of machine or gizmo, this man took his guitar
playing to a new and amazing level.

    Who is this man?

    Adrian Legg.

    The " O P E N I N G A C T " of G3 in the Midwest...

The rest of the night consisted of blistering guitar solos and amazing
tapping sequences but in terms of innovation, Adrian took the cake.

Now if you plan on flaming this post, saying that this isn't truly
innovative because Raphael Smo-and-smo from Helsinki or whatever did it
first, well fuck me in the goat-ass! Don't burst my bubble. Adrian rocked
and there's nothing you can do to change that. Pbpbpbpbpb!!!!!

    That's all. Bye!

How can you NOT have everything Dream Theater makes readily
available to us for little cost? It was worth it in '92 when I had to buy
it as an import, and it's even more so that it's available for $10.99 at
Best Buy. I personally think Charlie is exellent on the album... his live
stuff is the only thing that I find flaw in. He's very accurate, just not
James LaBrie. As someone else said "Do not fear Dominici" The album has
IMO the best lyrics DT has done.

    >that makes it worth picking up? I've heard so many nasty things about the
    >vocals that I've avoided it like the plague so far...

This is a very subjective issue. It seems as though a handful of people
really like Charlie's voice, so I can't say "His voice sucks", or "His voice
rocks", because neither statement is based on fact. Personally, I don't like
his voice, but that doesn't stop me from listening to the album. The music
on it is WELL WORTH owning. It took me many, many listenings before liking
the majority of that record, mainly because I was coming from being a cured
I&W fanatic. The two albums are quite different, but WDADU has it's own charm.

What really got me into the album was hearing the tunes that were redone on
LatM. Those older songs rock so hard on LatM that I came to a new awareness
that I actually *did* like the songs on WDADU. Also, if you find the music
minus vocals to be desirable, check into obtaining a copy of InstruMental I,
which has four WDADU songs recorded without vocals. I think Tim Lodge has
copies of that one at axe@nai.net. And like I mentioned above, Live at the
Marquee has a couple of tunes from the album, but of course with JLB on
    vocals. Smokin'!!

    Hi,

yes, I know the "bar-band"-segment of the NP interview sounds kindof harsh. I should've added the (laughs) and (pauses) in the interview but didn't really have the time to put them back in, since the document i used was already a bit edited. Anyway, Neil paused a couple of times during that part of the interview and seemed a bit displeased talking about it. "They're just a bunch of... bar bands doing it (laughs) you know..." I think was the exact sentence, if that makes it any less harsh.

I don't really think he completely meant what he said, I mean i think he's got some respect for Steve Morse and Billy Sheehan (the've toured together) and hopefully Mike and the DT-guys as well. I think he spoke of these tribute albums in general, and let's face it: the Magna Carta-ones are mass produced "all your favourite prog hits from the 70's done by all of your favourite groups of the 90's" even if maybe the intention is not as evil as it sounds here. OTOH, I've got very little respect for Shadow Gallery and some of the other progmetal-bandwagoneers that seem to crop up everywhere recently. Lemur Voice has got a good instrumental song on their album and Altura has got some good tracks, Elegy's half-acoustic thing is cheesy by nice, Laberinto is great! but generally this "second wave of..." lacks severly in soul, feel, songwriting and most other things that'll make music good. And c'mon, I mean, the line-up for the tribute was not that amazing, nor the covers themselves. DT, FW, Steve Morse, the Cynic-guys, Devin, Billy and Deen were good. Working Man is okay, Analog Kid is flashy but ok, The Trees is completely awful, La Villa... is very good, Mission is so-so, Anthem needed vocals, Jacob's Ladder is ok, Closer To The Heart is good, Natural Science is great, Yyz is so-so, Red Barchetta is very good and Freewill is kinda boring. All IMO. I think the covers are done too stylisticly strict with far too much flash from people that need to lay back. However I don't think Mike overplays, which some people have said. And Deen rules and swings. As do Billy-boy and the Seans. I would have appreciated some real re-arrangements or innovative things. Now there's almost "all flash and no smash".

    Putting on the asbestos-suit...

I have noticed that some other guy sings some of the songs besides Doug. Am I right in this? For instance, he does vocals for "lies in the sand", "life going by", and "legal kill." Is this another band member or is it really Doug?

I have just received confirmation of my un-subscription to this newsletter, because in the dozen or so issues I received, the only place Dream Theater was mentioned was by someone who said they were a fan.

If this is an e-mail chat room, then fine, but just to let you know, a true DT fan waded through a lot of crap waiting on some DT info (or even conversation).

I won't see any posts that are on this mailer, but if you have comments, feel free to e-mail me.

    ---------------------

Just for those of you who are REALLY interested in what the band is up to, Mike said at a clinic in Denver that they have over 2 hours of material ready for the new album, which does not eliminate/imply the chances of a double album. He also said that rather than the Februaryish date we've been looking for, we will more than likely have to wait until late Spring or early Summer for the new release.

He jammed to a recording of Peruvian Skies, which is pretty straight forward but was still unbelievable. He played another (the name escapes me) which will rival some of the other biggies, and he also claims that the Metropolis Part II will put the first one to shame. Hard to believe, but I will wait with bated breath to find out!

OK. Here's a question that I would love to challenge the masses on. Christmas is approaching, and for my progressive rock radio show, I want to do some christmas prog tunes. Here's what I know so far:

Yes: Run with the Fox, (YesYears box set, disk 3) ELP: I believe in father christmas (Only have the version on the box set, and don't like it much, compared with the old version, what album is that on anyway?>) And for the Dream Theater fans, a version of Oh Holy night, but it is of poor sound quality to play on the air.

What am I missing? Sorry that this may be off-topic, but ... I figured that the progressive fans could help me here. Email me at

    Hey all!

Just got ahold of some Winter Rose live shows on tape from a couple of years back...WOW!

I gotta say that Labrie hasn't changed a bit since...he was as powerful then as he is now. The music I think is like a cross between old Skid Row and Whitesnake! Not bad, but definately Glam-ish. Actually, the songs sound great, albiet some are a tad cloned.

Altogether the best is just listening to Labrie go on inbetween the songs...he STILL uses the same material:

"You guys are really loud tonight!" "Awwwwlrhight!!" -and- "Check this one out..."

I really loved the "We're havin' a fuckin' good time tongiht!"

I guess the show was a live broadcast on some station out of Toronto. Overall the sound quality is good for a bootleg. Everythings clear and clean!

Does anyone know if this band actually released any studio material?

If anyone wants to make a tape trade, e-mail me privately....

Hrm, I sense another Mindcrimer attack coming to this fellow. You said it, bub, not me. You also fergot the magic "IMHO" so's ppl are gonna take more offense to it cuz the ppl who haven't actually heard this "Bandwagoneer" stuff could be turned off to it. You sound like another closed-mind Frederico tom me. The only thing setting these bands back from Dream Theater, Rush, etc. is that they've mostly only had one (Whoah, Blue SweetTarts Rule!) album that was IMHO <---(Notice!) poorly produced. Setting that aside, the music is as intricate and as unorthodox as old prog. Remember, DT isn't that old, either, and their first album is great but poorly produced as well. If you've tried them and don't like them, that's fine, I won't argue with you there. Just don't defend some lame-ass comment that Peart has because a group of bands got together one say and said, "let's play some RUSH!", got it on CD, and produced them. I can think of no bigger tribute than a group of people getting together and jammin' out with someone else's tunes. Especially when they have plenty of thier own they could be playing. These guys took time out of their schedules to do this and I don't think it's right for Neil to knock 'em. Even "bar bands" deserve some credit. Neil's a nadlezz crybabay. :P
