Check out Mike Kenneally's work, he is working with Vai on this G3 tour,
and he played Keyboards and guitar harmonies, he plays very good, you can
listen to his 3 solo albums or listen to him with dweezil zappa...
he played on the Z albums and on the Dweezil Zappa's Confessions (a very
good album), I saw a Keneally's page at http://www.moosenet.com look for
    Mike Keneally....

Okay, I think its time for some DTC! How about people who have been on this
list bring up some of the "old" threads from the past! This could be about
what Lie is about or what the is [insert DT member here] playing at x:xx of
[insert song here]. Because new jammers want some DTC let's give it to them! :-)

The most prog-ish music I've heard in a video game has been in the
old NES game "Solstice". The SNES sequel to that, "Equinox", just didn't
    measure up musically.

Super Mario 64 has some of the most fantastic music ever in a
game, but it's "jazzy". Except in the water levels, where it's downright
beautiful, something I'd expect out of Tori Amos. Not very DT-ish but what
    can you say.

The SNES game Rock n' Roll Racing has Sabbath and Deep Purple and
so forth in the soundtrack... that kicks some serious butt.

SNES Super Metroid has, hands-down, the best 16-bit soundtrack
I've ever heard, including some "slap-bass" themes varied with some
lighter, more atmospheric music, and some deep, dark, despairing tunes.
Really just a fantastic example of what video game music can be.

DT content: I just noticed that Mike Portnoy uses the exact same
drum lines in part of the beginnings of Pull Me Under and Metropolis. Most
of you already heard it, no doubt. Listen for it, the drum line is
    like..... dadadum dadum dadadum dadum.

All three members of King's X do vocals, sometimes one of the
other two (Jerry or Ty) will do the leads on a song.

Some I can think of right off the top of my head are..

    * Life Going By - probably THE best KX tune
    * It's Love - a damn strong contender
    * Lies in the Sand - how many other bands seem to use this as a title?
    * Legal Kill
    * Mississippi Moon
    * The Train
    * I Can't Help It
    * We Were Born To Be Loved

I'm sure there are more, that's just "immediate recognition".

This is my first post in this perfect world of Dream Theater. I have decided to
begin with a current controversial subject: Neil Peart.
I refuse to say things to disrespect him because I will not fall to his level.
However, did he not play on a tribute album for Buddy Rich? If Buddy was still
alive, he would probably not try to trash the ones who were heavily influenced
by him. Yes, Neil Peart is one of the greatest drummers to ever grace the
world of music but this does not make him above God. I wonder if he has even
taken the time out of his busy, no North Carolina show playin', schedule to
even listen to Working Man. Anyway, he probably cares no more than any of the
musicians that he trashed in that interview. The others are beyond insulting
each other because of their status in the eyes of themselves.

If it weren't for Carlo I would have NO BANDS left on my "Must Buy" cd list.
I find these posts interesting because I like to hear what reactions this
music gets. This stuff is not DT related, no, but it DOES fall within the
    specified ytsejam rules... so chill.

    > I try to play DT once in a while (If you've been reading any of my

    >instead of DT...I'm sure some would love it if I played DT straight for
    >2 hours..well, I wouldn't..It would be boring

There's more to life than Dream Theater. I hope people aren't boxing
themselves into this "DT is the only prog band" mentality. It will really
place you in a category among musicians. The category, whether you like it
or not is "DT Wannabe". I wouldn't want to listen to a show of all DT
material when the DJ can and WILL open my ears to new music in the same vein.

I don't mind these Birch Hill posts, and the Peart thing I understand
(though I haven't read one of the posts except Sean Malone's because if he,
as a player on the WM album, was affected enough to write, I thought it
would be worth my time) but I get far more out of a post that will tell me
something that affects me, or tells me something I don't know (I.E. bands
that I don't have but WILL want). Besides... I've always felt that Rush
makes great music, and shitty music, and they're too pretentious to admit
that they aren't the innovators they were.

DUDE You call ME ignorant and you couldn't figure out that I was JOKING?!?
Why don't you pull your arms out of your ass... you'll feel better and it'll
be easier to type. I am neither ignorant of ANY guitar related technique
nor eloquent (and I know that's a compliment, but hey, I write pretty
straight forward... I wish I could write to impress people but what the fuck.)

    >Shred- (v) to absolutely kick ass on a musical instrument, in a way that
    >is distinctive, beautiful, and tasteful.
This differs from what guitarists call shred. Shred is Fast guitar playing
usually with a pick (Paco DeLucia would be a good exception) that tends to
be modal in nature. It also includes complex tapping lines and almost all
sweep picking. It is NOT always beautiful nor is it always tasteful. It is
DEFINATELY not always distinctive. I can show you 10 shredders that all
    sound close to the same.

    >Chris, don't flame me for saying that Adrian Legg shreds.
    I DIDN'T. You're being a dick.

    >And he is not
    >country. The guy is british, and it's FOLK music. And his albums are
    >just as good. I can drive 115 on the freeway with him in my disc player
    >same as Satch, Vai, or DT.
More power to you, sparky, but I said the bends sound distinctly country.
If you want to say Brits can't play in a country style, then also say they
can't play blues. And say non Brits can't play metal. If you want to call
it folk that's fine. I listen to a GREAT DEAL of folk music and a good deal
of instrumental country-ish stuff in this vein.... this sounds more country
than folk. British instrumental folk music (From what I've been exposed to
thus far) tends to be more traditional, Romantic, Rennaisance, or Baroque in
    nature.

Listen, I'm the last person to tell you what your opinions should be. I
don't care if you want to accept the normal definition of shred. I just
want you to READ before you write. I mean, do you think I'd REALLY argue
over Planet Acoustishred? I was making a joke. You are being an insulting
    twit.

Personally, though I love Shadow Gallery, I think it makes you an _honest_
person for stating you dislike SG. I can hardly call you closed minded...
you listen to Cynic and Pearl Jam if I remember correctly... ( I hate PJ)...
that sounds pretty open minded to me.

It seems Carlo misunderstood...as did I. I thought you were implying that
the set list didn't belong on the jam... not that you were suprised to see
no DT on his list. Actually, I didn't see the original post. If Carlo
included the entire thing in his reply then I think you didn't make yourself
clear in your position. No biggie... you just pushed a bad button on
    accident... that's MY guess anyway.

For the record, I said this before I saw you say it. :)

    > However, you, Carlo, need not be so brash in your reply.
I sort of agree... but if he saw your post the way I saw it, as saying it
shouldn't have been on the jam, then I understand his anger, as you probably
do. You guys are two definate "No Shit" jammers, so me thinks this
arguement will cease. Shake hands and beg Carlo for some dubs of his
extensive Prog Metal cd collection. :)

I have every album but that one... and they are all great. Fear not when
buying a MacAlpine album. You will not be displeased by Premonition. I
personally love the turn he took on Guitar Madness. There's a few Neo
Classical elements on the last few songs but he really shines on the rock
tunes on this album. The opener is just a KICK ASS instrumental. Listen to
it before you buy if you can.

    Dude! What's his URL?
Actually... a player like MacAlpine doesn't get "Dropped" by Shrapnel. He's
one of their better selling artists. If he's not on Shrapnel anymore it's
probably because he saw that he could cut Varney out of the picture (No
offense Varney supporters) and make a LOT more money. A player like him can
make a decent living (not a lot of money by any stretch of the imagination)
by putting out independant CDs and selling them to an already well
established fan base. I think this is an experiment for him... to see if
he'll make more money on his own. It'd be great for him to get liberated
from the bonds of the corporate record industry and be able to do what he
wants for the money he deserves.

the Boston or Philadelphia areas) is associate myself with that play (or
it's author). I'll admit, I haven't read it, but I've heard enough about
it from both its admirers and detractors to form an opinion. (And it
hasn't been that long of a wait, either.) I can think of much better album
    title ideas.
I hope this is a joke. If not, I hope they change their minds. If
they don't do that, hopefully it is only meant to be taken as a joke or a
pun and not to imply that anything about the album has any relation to that
play. The band's sampled enough bad authors like James Joyce; they don't
    have add Samuel Beckett.
Let the flames begin. E-mail address is below (as well as an
appropriate quote for Election Day from a good author).

"The issue of freedom vs. statism--or individual rights vs. government
controls, or capitalism vs. socialism--_is_ the basic issue of political
philosophy. It is _the_ root, _the_ start, _the_ fundamental which is
involved in every specific measure, by which all else is determined, by the
side of which all other considerations are trivia. It is the basic--and,
today, the only--issue by which all other considerations are trivia. It is
the basic--and, today, the only--issue by which a candidate must be judged:
    freedom vs. statism."

Nothing new to report, but a few things +ARE+ going on.

            1) Rush. Tomorrow. I'm psyched. If any jammers want to meet me
after the show (it's just gonna be too hectic before it) lemme know. i'll
be in section 111, row 17..or e-mail me.

            2) Birch Hill. it looks like (one again) Birch Hill is gonna be
pakced with ytsejammers lookin' for some ytse. this is a good thing to
see such a group support something they love so much, which is the
    theater.

as an aside, i have a question that no one seems to have answer
for, so i ask mr. portnoy and the rest of the band: _WHEN_ are the
tickets for the 5th show (in long island) going on sale?

you think they'll e-mail me and tell me?

            dunno.

anyway, it's late, and i need my supper. off to the temple. ;)

    Ok guys,
Subject says it all, in the spirit of YtseCommunity(tm), I am offering
rides to the 12/4, 12/6 and 12/14 shows. For all of the shows I plan on
leaving the area(NYC/LI) around 2pm. Plenty of time to get to the area
and hang out for a while.
I have room for three people in the YtseTaxi(tm) for each show(hey,
it's a Honda). Send me e-mail and we can work out the details.

Dream Disk carries CD's by the following bands, which have been discussed
at some time on the JAM:

Angara, Blind Guardian, Leviathan, Ivanhoe, Threshold, Iced Earth

How would you classify each: progressive; metal; progressive-metal?
    Which would you recommend first?
Which CD, if more than one title is available would you consider
    best/purchasing first for each band?

Thanks for any input, since I can't afford to get everything at once.
