My dad, probably unknowingly purchased a CD entitled:

*Us & Them: the Symphonic Works of Pink Floyd*

It has orchestrated versions of PK songs from Dark Side of the Moon & The
    Wall.
If you know your classical music, a lot it sounds like Vaughn Williams,
with his infamous double string arrangements. Its actually quite good.

One interesting thing is that the cover art work is by Roger Dean (*the
famous **Yes** cover artist*). According to the liner notes, RD once
shared an apartment with the equally (in)famous Syd Barrett.

If you like classical, you'd probably like this album and the PK
arrangements-they're not straight-forward, but rather more
impressionistic-like PK music. Somewhat like the Symphonic Works of Yes,
but without any band participation in any of the pieces.

yeah, Intellivision was the thing, but what about the Texas Instruments TI-99, or the Colecovision (which I never got :( ). Our first computer here was an old Radio Shack TRS-80. yeah, we had some boat anchors.

Now some DTC: Actually, i dig that idea for the new album title. Godot. whatever the band is really considering for te title, I do dig the idea of a literary twist. it was all the literary references that got me into Maiden big time (I already liked the music). Really, i don't care much what the title is, as long as the music is true to DT's talent. And yes, I am MUCH more anxious to hear the tunes than to hear the title. Actually, now that I think of it, knowing the title will probably only make me more anxious to hear the tunes, since it'll get me thinking about the new album more.

I haven't actually VANISHED....I'm just unbelievably busy at work, which is where I get my mail. So I haven't disappeared, but I'm barely keeping afloat. I DID want to say a couple of things, though.

First, bad press from Rush has appeared here yet again. I guess I don't want to go questioning the integrity of other list members, but it's one of those things....it's like all the talk of the album getting banned here in the US. The last time I walked into the local Tower records, they had perhaps three digits worth of the record in stock....a HUGE number of "Working Man" CD's, even featured in the listening station. So I'm really questioning the validity of all of this.

Sean Malone and Marcel, obviously, would know a hell of a lot more about the situation that I do. That notwithstanding, I'm wondering about that "bar-band" thing, especially since Neil's TOURED with guys on the tribute. More than once. I mean, the Alex Lifeson/Neil Peart/Billy Sheehan soundcheck jam is a famous part of Rush touring lore. Does this really make sense? I dunno....Neil sometimes strikes people as a harsh guy -- an asshole, if you will. And I'm sure there are reasons for that, but, until I see something that really seems like it's from the source, I'm gonna hafta consider it POSSIBLE incorrectness, rather than ACTUAL incorrectness.

For what it's worth, "Working Man" is hardly filled with "bar bands," but some of the finest musicians ever assembled for any musical project. Most of the songs on there are pretty damn strong (I even like Devin Townsend on there...). I guess we've all given our reviews by now, though, eh? Most of us, I'd say, would probably recognize that some hellacious musicians are on the record.

Other thing: Awake vs. The First Record

Very close, I'd say, but I'd lean to "Awake" as the stronger effort. Too many good ones on there, I'd say -- "Scarred," "Space Dye Vest," "Caught In A Web." Though I'd take "Only A Matter Of Time" before anything on "Awake." I guess, when you get to thinking about it, it's just these kind of issues that make you realize how talented the band is -- after three releases and an EP, you've got a wealth of great material to pick from.

I've noticed a lot of talk about Neil Peart and his insultary remarks towards those "bar bands" that performed on the "Working Man" CD. I've also read that interview somewhere on the net, and I must say, it was a typical Neil thing to say. I honestly think that Rush would be a much more popular band if he could learn not to be so arrogant! Don't get me wrong, I love the music, (I'll be seeing them in Boston, Nov 9), but this kind of self-importance is what gives progressive music the "uppity" attitude for which it is so often criticized in musical circles (especially rock reviewers, who for the most part, don't like Rush.) This most recent "Criticism," however, is nothing compared to the kind of dribble he used to spout back in the 70's when he ripped on bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones (like 'em or not, you have to give them credit.)

Seriously though, try not to let Mr. Peart's personality stop you from enjoying Rush's music. They are easily my second favorite band (No need to mention who's number one), whose live shows are outstanding! If they are playing in your area, I totally recommend seeing them!!!

I would tend to agree with that. When I first subbed, all the conversation was about what Voices was about or how the last part of The Mirror demonstrates the couples frustration with the bends and harmonics. I would be very interested to hear other people's views on what DT songs mean to them.

Yes he has a certain arrogance about > him but actually listen to him and he provides much more meaningful > information than anyone else in the media. > > > Randy Unfortunately, you are right.

It seems that the truth hurts more than we like it, too. I think that's why I jump in defense. He has a point, fair enough. We pull the shades down over our eyes to cover up the fact that we are afraid to see the light. Neil actually has his reasons for saying the things he said. He also referred to them as barbands in his own defense without realizing how he hurt the people he was referring to. We're all guilty of this. I am especcially. In my defensiveness I trashed on some people for their way of thinking and not realizing what I was saying. I offer my apologies and will think twice before I do that again. Let's enjoy what we will and not bash on other people for what their likes and dislikes are.

That's why we have politicians. :)

My apologies once again. If you cannot accept them, then I can offer no more. IbnzRG570 aka Mr. Chuckalupugus

The production on the original with Dominici is better than alot of songs on the LaBrie Version. cuz there are some songs that couldn't be recorded from the soundboard. (Seeing as how the band didn't have a soundboard then). I recommend WDADU whole=heartedly. I didn't like it to well at first, but it grows on you. Charlie handles himself quite well, IMHO. If you don't get it, you'll just wonder what your missing forever. :)

I can't believe I've read about four posts involving the use of "country-ish" when referring to Adrian Legg, and not once has the term Blue-grass popped up....

Is anyone else going to the Prog Nite show at the Rock n Roll Cafe? If anyone knows who will be playing, please post it. The idiots at the club never know who's playing if you call on the phone.

    Thanks.

I did see it like that Rick (thanks for helping to clear it up Chris). I heartily apologize for coming down hard at first. Upon reading your initial post I was so angry (that someone criticized me for posting those bands to the jam) that I couldn't contain myself. I know see it in a different light in that you were wondering why i hadn't played DT (not flaming my posting the list to the jam)..answer is that I have a lot of CD's (over 400 last time I counted) and many songs near and dear to my heart. I still can't believe that I go weeks without playing HELLOWEEN...but I simply don't have enough time. Once again..sorry for the explosion...it must be that I'm getting anxious about my 13-hour road trip to Chicago for the JASON BECKER BENEFIT concert!!!!!!! 2 more weeks!!!!!! :-) I'm not worthy.....

How would you classify each: progressive; metal; progressive-metal? Which would you recommend first? Which CD, if more than one title is available would you consider best/purchasing first for each band?

Definitely get the new Iced Earth, The Dark Saga. It's a little harder and tighter than the previous, Burnt Offerings (which is awesome, too). I love it; it hasn't come out of my player for the past two weeks. Influences of Metallica and Queensryche are evident. I brought it over to a friend's house last Sat. night and he liked it, saying that it was "very listenable metal". During the song "Vengance is Mine", he said, "wow! that's some tight stuff!" I'd describe it as "gothic prog-metal", I guess. I like it better than Ivanhoe's Symbols in Time and the live Threshold album I have (Livedelica)- though both of these are excellent. The first song is reminiscent enough of Enter Sandman to make me wish that Metallica had put out an album this good. Get it. Now.

Btw, I've seen a bunch of stuff from Angra at the local store. This is the Brazilian band, no? To reinforce Randall's request, can anyone give a good description of what to get and which albums?
