What is the Nature of this Beast that we call the YTSEJAM? It is
by definition a semi/self-moderated mailing list about the band
Dream Theater. However, it is also (not by definition) a collection
of over 800 individuals with unique backgrounds, values,
cultures, religions, genders, educations, trainings, etc.

We have a basic set of rules that are posted weekly by the
list operator (thank you Skadz) that are neither obeyed nor
enforced. Some people think that is a bad thing and some
people think that is a good thing.

For one whole whopping day, I decided to see how difficult
it would be to moderate this list. Some of you may have seen
my self-righteous, holier-than-thou, little messages titled
"I am not the Ytse-God, but...". I sent out 10 of these stupid
little messages in response to a single YTSEJAM digest. They
were little reminders that certain topics are "off-topic".

In retrospect, I have concluded several things:

    1. Moderating this list is impossible. I predict that if
Voices is to succeed as a moderated list, Ken will have
to implement suspensions, bannings, shunnings, and public
floggings to keep people in line. I personally don't think
       that is possible unless:
       a) He finds someone to pay him for this full-time responsibility
       b) and he has the skin of a rhinoceros.

I think his list will reach critical mass somewhere around 300
       subscribers or 50 active participants.

    2. A certain percentage of this list will always be devoted
to worthless posts. I have been a YTSEJAM subscriber since
Digest number 768. These kind of posts which everyone hates
       will alway be present:
          - this list sucks, I quit.
          - watch me demonstrate what a dick I am.
          - Hear me spout some religious, political, sexist, racist,
            or other inflammatory commentary.
          - I'm bored. this is what i'm thinking.
          - your message was a waste of bandwidth.
          - how do i subscribe, unsubscribe, whatever.
          - fuck yeah!
          - blah, blah, blah rocked/sucked

Humorous and serious attempts to demonstrate the worthlessness
of these posts have failed for one reason. These posts are
inherently part of the nature of any mailing list.

    3. We all know that we agree that Dream Theater is a good band
(except for any anti-DT lurkers); to discuss this at length is
really boring. At times the non-DT content is really more
       interesting.

My initial reason for signing up for this mailing list was to get
    information. First, the intent was to get information about DT;
later, it was extended to include information about prog-metal
    in general.

Now that I have been an Internet user for over 18 months, I have
concluded that the Internet is a valuable source of information.
However, much of the information is based on opinion, incomplete,
incorrect, or out-of-date data. It is the responsibility of the
user to separate the good from the bad. It is the responsibility
of the user to compile, aggregate, and analyze information from
many different sources, including "outer-net" resources such as
magazines, tv-shows, radio, etc. The quality and the detail of
the information is determined by the effort the user makes.

This list by itself is a good source of information, but not a
GREAT source of information. Much of the information that is
posted about tour dates, new album, FAQs is found just as easy
on the web and Usenet once you know where to look.

There are mailing lists to which I have subscribed (Rush, Journey,
Styx) and Usenet groups (r.m.p., r.m.a.q.) that have provided me
with more postings than I really wanted to deal with or care about.
Each contained idiosyncratic people who, in mass, turned me off.

The personalities on this list are, to me, more tolerable than
those on other mailing lists and Usenet groups. Some people feel
differently and unsubscribe quietly or loudly. That's fine, but
I'm staying and I'm posting no matter what anyone (other than
    Skadz) says.

The question, then, is why do we remain subscribed to this list?
The answer is that some people are here for interaction, some for
information, some for mere entertainment, some because they don't
have web/usenet access and this IS the ONLY source of info. The
list serves all of those purposes, although not always perfectly.

I submit that what we need is not only rules and guidelines, but
also, parameters. Skadz needs to tell us how many digests his
server can handle per day without him getting into trouble. He
needs to tell us what kind of topics will cause him to get so
pissed off that he drops the list altogether.

This list is as good as its ever to going to get, folks. Love it,
tolerate it, or leave it (quietly please).

Yes. Those songs are sung by Ty Tabor, the guitarist. He also sang lead vocals on their big hit from Faith Hope Love, "It's Love." If you listen really carefully, you might be able to find a song or two in the KX discography sung by Jerry Gaskill, the drummer. Mighty rare. (oh alright, giveaway: Jerry sings all the vocal parts on "American Cheese" from the album Ear Candy.)

Your attention please. My post regarding Pleasure Crush was only a joke. Pleasure Crush is not opening for DT.

Pleasure Crush opened for DT last December at the El 'N Gee. They were unanimously referred to as "One of the worst, no I'm sorry, THE Worst Fucking Band I've ever heard." by Brian Cox, Andrew Keegan, and several folks who happened to catch their act. Pleasure Crush is also the reason a lot of people couldn't feel their own bodies as they entered the club after something like seventeen hours of waiting in something like two degrees farenheit.

I only have material by those bands mentioned in my subject header.

I would classify Angra as progressive power metal similar to Helloween and the like, if that helps. Angels Cry is more traditional power metal whereas Holy Land is far more experimental and by extension, more progressive in the progressive rock domain, even. Much lighter stuff.

Blind Guardian is more along the German Power Metal genre, being as they are German, etc. More reminiscent of Gamma Ray than Helloween, but this is very strong material. Imaginations From The Other Side, the latest new material release, is very complex, melodic, and speedy at the same time.

Leviathan, eh. I don't really remember. I had a dub of their latest Deepest Secrets or something like that, but it didn't impress me much. Not as proggy - more traditional metal.

Ivanhoe, in my opinion, is a cheap DT ripoff. It isn't as horrible as all that, but it doesn't have any of the spirit DT has, but shares the "whiny voice vocals" with DT (no flames!) and it has that same keyboard sound (not as good) as I&W. Just not very original.

    >Which would you recommend first?

    Blind Guardian

    >Which CD, if more than one title is available would you consider >best/purchasing first for each band?

BG - Imaginations from the Other Side. If you really loved "Walls of Jehrico" by Helloween, then buy "Tales From The Twilight World," because that is much faster and thrashier than IFTOS.

Angra - Angels Cry, if you like power prog metal, Holy Land if you like proggier, more mellow music.

I wouldn't waste 25 dollars on any other of the imports, if they are even imports. I think Ivanhoe and Leviathan are domestically available. I wasn't impressed.

    > >Thanks for any input, since I can't afford to get everything at once. >

You wouldn't be disappointed by Blind Guardian. Probably *the* best major label band not distributed in the United States. (They are on Virgin world-wide)

    1. I just got my tickets for Dec 6th show at Toad's --- yummy. Are cameras ok there? Anyone from New Haven area, what's the best way to get there from Danbury/New Milford area?

    2. I just saw a post about a Portnoy clinic in Danbury. Is this spam, or for real? I don't want to soil my shorts and change them for nothing.

Aside from the fact that he's a politician, I might actually like RL. I can't stand ppl who have to throw shit on other ppl to bring themselves up, though. Typical of most politicians, I guess that's what life's all about though.

Man it's been a long time! When is JP going to do a clinic in Charlotte?!?! I was told by a few of my friends back home that he had already been there last month, but no one can give me a straight answer!

I should know this, but it's been a long semester; just when is the new DT album coming out? I've heard about five different dates, but I figured if I wanted to know for sure then I had better ask here.

Upon returning from school from voting, I voted for Curley by the way, I heard (99.7) that there's a distinct possibility that Eric Johnson was going to do a show in Charlotte by the end of the month! I couldn't help but figure that it was for the G3 show, but according to the G3 website they aren't coming anywhere close to NC. Any ideas?

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, sorry I didn't return any of the mail I've received about bootlegs, dubbing etc., but as I said before it's been a monster of a semester. I hanen't had the time to even listen to them let alone dub any! Whoever said that your last year was easy should be shot!

thanks in advance for the help! Brandon P.

Yeah and it rules, the drum mastering is perfect in most of the songs, and Labrie adds a lot to them. Obviously. Ah, and the Keys on the YTSEJAM sound much better live.. Jalfaro@Caribe.net

I could accept you saying that WDADU is ten times more complex than AWAKE, but not better, it would be more understandable if u said WDATU, because the mastering and vocals in WDADU simply lets down anyone, including me, and makes you change the cd in a few minutes and pop in any other Dt cd or whatever.. including AWAKE. Most likely if the songs in WDATU were recorded as a real album and not a bootleg, it would be a very good and complex cd. So thats were I agree with you. If by saying WDADU is 10 times better than awake you meant WDADU and WDATU, all this jibberish I just typed is incoherent and unessesary :) Jalfaro@Caribe.net

Another new Jammer! I have been reading diligently the last few weeks and now I know the "Jamiquette", I am ready for my first post.

I am 32 years old (although I don't act it), I play guitar (like who doesn't!) and I love Dream Theater. From the instant I heard PMU on Z-Rock I was hooked. I like a wide variety of music. I love Saigon Kick. I think they are one of the more innovative rock bands around. I even like some of the more pop stuff, like The Refreshments (local band), Goo Goo Dolls and Bush (no flames please!) I am tolerant of other people's tastes. Just because I don't like something, I will not say "it sucks."

Here's my take on some CD recommendations from the Jam. 1. Lemur Voice, Insights - Great music. This is the best I have heard in awhile. The vocals are hard to understand, but I don't mind. Great guitar and keyboard work. I even love the more mellow moments. 2. Echolyn, As The World - I cannot get into this, although I have tried. 3. Steve Vai, Fire Garden - Obviously has great guitar work. The vocals are quite unexpected. I love the mix of songs. 4. Y&T, Musically Incorrect - I am a huge Y&T fan, but I do not like this CD. Quite disappointing. 5. Working Man - Revived my interest in old Rush. (I love all their stuff through MP). Highlights are Analog Kid, Jacob's Ladder and Mission. I do not like the version of Anthem. Although I like George Lynch, I think there is too much guitar in this song.

On guitars, I have had many. I still have my Ibanez Roadstar from the early 80's. I now use a Jackson PS-2. (the best $400 guitar I have ever owned!) I use a Crate head with a Jackson cabinet and a Digitech effects rack.

On racism, I am Polish/Syrian, so I have been hearing crap all my life. It personally does not bother me, but I am also sensitive to other's feelings.

On radio, it sucks. I am listening to a CD channel on my Satellite dish right now. The "Power Rock" station. It's a "different" mix of music. I just listened to Rush - Passage to Bangkok, Collective Soul, Foo Fighters, Toadies, Mettallica - Fade to Black and Skid Row.

I promise I won't post anything this large again. Thanks to all

    Michael

I would say Charlie's voice is more sort of wussie-like than anything else. Labrie is obviously more powerful ;) And it is plain cool when he screams because it is not a Mark Slaughter scream or something like that :) (Sorry for those who like MArk's singin , its just an opinion)

At first it was hard to get used to for me, but now I prefer it over his singin in , lets say, IAW.

But so help me God, if I have to walk to their home and deliver it myself, everyone who ever ordered anything from me WILL GET IT. If you still lack something from me that was from quite a while ago (as I'm still working through the Tori/Metallica discs now) let me know so I can make this right. I know that Brian Adams, Bill Youngman, and one of the Andy Millers have always had the worst luck getting packets from me, and re-sends abound, and I intend to see that the problem is solved. Possibly when I move. Which will be part of the next message.
