Yeah.... Eric's on tour OUTSIDE of G3 either during the G3 tour or
immediately afterward. He's playing Chicago in about a week or two. G3 was
    only this past Friday...

Actually, I really didg the demo version. It's shorter in time because
its tempo is about 7 beats per minute faster, and the texture difference
is noticeable right away byt the fact that the bass ostinato in the
beginning "da-dadada-da-dadada...." is done on JM's bass, rather than
    synth.
However, the vocals are great sounding, but only as a result of very poor
production: the texture shift comes from a detuned sound because of tape
speed difference during vocal-doubling, or possibly LaBrie singing about 4
    cents #/b when overdubbing.
A few of the guitar fills are shifted up an octave, and that is cool, but
petrucci did that on Live In Tokyo, so it may have been mixed back on I&W
    so it is less noticeable.

No, I do not recommend emperor for probably the majority of the jam's
readers...it's black metal (someone correct me if I'me
screwing up subgenre names)...definitely not for everybody. the best black
metal I've heard though (although my experience is pretty much limited
to emperor and bathory). Love their use of keyboards...the speed...the
entire atmosphere...the singer (not an entirely accurate term)...

So THAT'S Adrian Legg... I've seen many photos of a man similar to what you have described, always playing an acoustic guitar. Okay, now I can attach all the reviews and comments I've heard to a real-life image.

The at one > point in the song, he had one hand strumming while the other was > CONSTANTLY changing all 6 strings. Each note he played was "swooping" > up or down and it sounded PERFECT!

Aha! :) A trick near and dear to my heart, practiced by Nicolo Paganini during his performances so long ago. (I refuse the practice of awarding credit based indirectly on the existence of memory and the fact that existence as a whole never ceases. Time moves forward, nothing to date can change this byproduct of this reality, so I'm not shooting down Mr. Legg for using this technique, just pointing out that it's a subject I've thought of while playing but have rarely discussed.)

Paganini would do this (knob-rotation) constantly during his performances to (a) keep his violin constantly in tune, which not only made his playing sound better (uh, really?) but also (b) allowed him to move rapidly into his next piece without stopping to bore/annoy the crowd with the usually-obligatory instrument re-tuning that a violin soloist as aggressive as Paganini would have had to do.

He would also incorporate these sudden shifts in pitch into the passages of his actual playing, to allow for a sudden odd stretch where needed or a convenient economizing of his hand motions. Of course, the combination of his incredibly long fingers, unnaturally elastic cartilage, and tuning-knob acrobatics made some of his improvised stage numbers kind of impossible for other violinists to even approach. Too bad he didn't write more stuff down. And of course no one had the sense to smuggle in a DAT recorder or something...I mean the security in those places was what, ZERO? Heck, even the moshpits served tea.

Point for string-players: Paganini performed with a violin tuned up a half-step. He observed, and was correct, that when tuned up, a violin's tone suddenly becomes much brighter. For some reason a lot of guitarists choose to shift their instrument's tuning by moving everything DOWN, and while that's neat for rhythm (Nuno Bettencourt's super-thwacky/muted rhythms), it's amazing what you lose in tone when a string that's supposed to be set at a certain tightness to produce the best overall resonance at that gauge is loosened. If you have a really good effects processor this practice is kind of futile since chorus and other neat sonic augmentors can give your guitar a bright tone regardless of how taut the strings are. Not to mention if you happen to be playing though an 80-watt amp...

    > The rest of the night consisted of blistering guitar solos and amazing > tapping sequences but in terms of innovation, Adrian took the cake.

Another practice I refuse is assuming that what is familiar is understood. Or that what I've never seen doesn't exist until I see it. That would mean Ben Laussade is just a will-o-the-wisp or something...

    > Now if you plan on flaming this post, saying that this isn't truly > innovative because Raphael Smo-and-smo from Helsinki or whatever did it > first, well fuck me in the goat-ass! Don't burst my bubble. Adrian > rocked and there's nothing you can do to change that. Pbpbpbpbpb!!!!!

Right now? Type O, no contest. After Neil's latest-posted comments, I wouldn't buy a Slush Puppie from Rush -- and I've been a fan since PERMANENT WAVES. Type O, on the other hand, were excellent at two headlining gigs I've seen here and quite good at the other show (opening for Danzig). Didn't see the QR show -- another conscious decision on my part -- but half of that show was a joke on the band's part anyway. :) I'm very pleased with OCTOBER RUST -- start it on track 3, please -- and right now it's my 2nd-favorite CD of 1996, behind only, well..... Superior's "behind." :)

Howdy fellow jammers.. been reading for a while and haven't replied to anything and figure I'd go and save it for one post. Who knows how big this is going to get.. or where it's going to go.. First off.. This "WDADU vs. Awake" stuff is bullshit. Granted both are DT albums, but it's comparing apples to oranges. Both albums have their "pros's and cons" (ie: Production quality on WDADU isn't great compared to that of Awake) but look at it this way... WDADU was done back in 89 if my memory serves me correctly and the band was fresh out of Berklee. So they wrote probably to date one of the most intricite, prgressive albums of all time... "Awake" on the other hand was two albums, one new lead singer and 5 years later.. The band has grown, and matured into what I consider one of the most "complete" bands of the 90's that can do anything. So of course "Awake" isn't as complexed as "WDADU", but if you compare the two.. you'll find that "Awake" is a more complete album and I think it's a perfect example both lyrically and musically on how the band has grown...So comparing the two albums is almost like comparing two different bands. While on the topic of WDADU... I used to hate "Uncle Chuck".. I thought his vocal style was both annoying and typical of 80's cock rock.. I just thank god the music wasn't.. But now.. totally different attitude. I like his singing and think it fits the music almost perfectly. Granted, it (the album) could do with a few less of those high pitched screams like in "The Killing Hand".. but overall, I think it fits the music and the music fits it. I almost find it annoying when I hear LaBrie singing "Only A Matter Of Time" and "AfterLife". I'm pretty sure I can get used to it though. Ahh.. the infamous "bar-band" comment.. well, this is simple. People say try not to take it personally. For me this is kinda hard, Neil has been part of a band that I have "HAD" alot of respect for in the past. I consider him to be without a doubt one of the most phenominal drummers and one of the best lyricists on the face of the Earth and now we can probably add errogant to that list also. I don't like "bar-bands".. never have never will. If you ask me to name a band that I consider to be a "bar-band" one that pops into my head right away is Green Day.. it's not because they're another cheesy alternacrap band.. it's because thats what they strike me as.. a cheesy bar-band. So to call a group of musicians that I listen to and admire a bunch of "bar-bands".. thats a slap in my face. He might as well spit on my dead-grandmothers grave, or say some bad shit about my mom, because thats the way I feel. Since I have that out of my system... all I have to say is "FUCK HIM". If he wants to be an arrogant pompous, snobby, musician.. thats fine.. so be it. One thing I do NOT believe in is the "one member speaks for everyone" theory. I firmly believe that Geddy and Alex, although may not like the album or the thought of it, respect the musicians on it for both their talent and contributions to the music industry. I don't percieve them as being that shallow. ***While on the topic... Kudos to Malone for one of the most amazing posts I have seen regarding this issue.. I'm just sorry I couldn't be as elequent*** Hmm... here's a fun one...politix, and "lack of DTC" Very simple... When a band hasn't done much in terms of music in over a year... What are we going to write about to keep this newsletter going?!? Certainatly not the same boring threads that almost everyone and their brother has read, re-read, replied, re-replied, and read again. Maybe for some of the newbies we'll re-iterate some of the exhausted ones, but none to dwell upon. And for those that bitch about that, got a solution? Should we go and start including the FAQ as a weekly post so noone gets pissed at "re-runs"? hm.. just a thought.. so what to do.. what to do. Well, since people don't like politix (which seems to be about the only thing to talk about these days) and want DTC.. why not make it interesting. Which member of DT would you vote for as President and Why? Plus, who could be his running mate? I for one DID NOT vote this election.. For three reasons. One, I don't care about politix. Two, I totally forgot it was the presidential elections, and three... I had more important things to do.. (like drive for over 3 hours to go get my Poughkeepsie tix) Oh.. hehehe... For all you people thinking about unsubscribing to the Jam becuase... "your too cool". Go ahead, leave, and try not to let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!" The sad thing that has struct me is that come Feb or sometime in the spring (whenever the new album is due out) You guys will come flocking back like a heard of rabid hippies at a granola convention so you can fill your DT fix. I just hope Skadz doesn't let you back on because you were too impatient with some of the people on hear and the subject content. December shows.. Well, as I said before.. I'm going to Poughkeepsie to see the boyz at "The Chance" on Dec. 4th. I just can't wait. I'm sorry to those who can't catch atleast ONE of the four shows.. but hey, what can ya do. Hopefully someone will "boot" it. When I talked to the owner of the chance.. He told me that for that night.. there will be NO opening act. The doors open at 7pm sharp and the band goes on between 7:30 and 8pm. From what he's been told by management.. the set will run in the neighborhood of about 2 and a half hours.. not bad in my opinion, especially when tix were only 15 bucks. To those going to the show.. We are trying to form a little "mini-con" before the show.. so all those that are going to the show that wouldn't mind meeting the rest of us irc and internet DT wierdos and phreaks... e-mail DreamNDay at DreamNDay@dreamt.org and tell him your interested. About the new album title "Godot".. I'm afraid I'm totally ignorant in this field and haven't done my "literary homework" you could say and am probably not the only one. Could someone please elaborate on this album title and fill us in on it's backround. It would be greatly appreciated. Well, I just picked up "Careved In Stone" be Shadow Gallery..I'll spare you my lengthy review on it. All I'll say is, as a musician.. I enjoy it alot and this along with a couple other prog bands, should tide me over quite nicely till the new album. Till next time...........

Just thought I would clear up a little point of confusion. Depending on where you live, the tri-states are all different. When I was in Connecticut, they were CT, NY, and NJ. Now that I live in PA, they are PA, NJ, and DE. The tri-state area is just a general term referring to a border area of three states. Sorry no DTC.

Interview: "by the way, have you listented to "working man?"

Alex Lifeson: "To tell you the truth, I didn't even know it was coming out, but I"d like to hear it. My first reaction would be: While I am kind of flattered that people actually take the time to make such a thing, I also wondered "why would somebody want to do that?" because I'm a bit embarrassed. I feel most tributes are made for bands that don't exist anymore, too. Or in other cases it would be by young musicians paying tribute to a band that they were influenced from. However, rush is still heavily active, and hasn't reached a stage like that. We're moving towards the future.

Brian Falk responded to my question of "who cares about titles?": >I don't see how it's asking like what a set list is (they're not >related) What I meant by the comparison was that the deep need to know the set-list won't keep you from the show a la the title won't keep you from buying the disc so why sweat it. >it does have something to do with the album as one totality, >as well >as how I think of it. The album's cover does also. It doesn't mean >I won't buy it. I might like the music as much if it really has a >bad title. I agree with you here 95 percent. It is part of the package as are books, movies, etc. >But if titles are so unimportant, why have them at all? Why not just >call the album _Dream Theater's Fourth Album_ or number them like >Chicago did? And here's my 5 percent dissent: album titles aren't end all be all especially with music (vs. movies and books). Many bands HAVE just used numbers because the title doesn't need to convey the content. "Beethoven's Symphony #9"....catchy, huh? I just can't comprehend people actually even _thinking_ "What a dumb title! Why would they do that? Why didn't they use a James Joyce reference?" It's not like the titles offensive or off-color. Speaking of Chicago :), does anyone else on here like 'em? Given the various and sundry definitions of prog, I think they fit in. After Chicago V, they seemed to stray a little too far towards the popular for me although there are still some gems in there. I find the brass sections on some of the older stuff to be about as close to _my definition of Prog as I can find. Check out the song 'Mother' from Live at Carnegie Hall to find out about what my mind is having trouble putting into words.
