Hi, guys! This is my first time actually posting to the 'jam. (I'm
Nicole, Ken McWatters' fiancee!)
First thing's first. I need your ***HELP!*** I'm conducting an informal
survey for one of my college writing classes, so if any of you are
interested in participating, please send me a mail at:
stachowic_n@dt3.dt.uh.edu
***PRIVATE MAILS ONLY PLEASE*** And I need queries by Wed., Nov. 13.
Thanks! :)
Now to the drum clinic... Mike was in great form! :) It was my second
of his to attend (the first being in Houston a while back.) Ken and I
met Ryan Webb (the guy who told us about it) -- KEWL Ytsejam shirt,
Ryan! :)
Mike played 2 new songs titled "Just Let Me Breathe" (kinda poppy) and
"Raise the Knife" (REALLY good!) He said DT had over 2 hours of complete
music, and they were working on more! He also said he helped write a new
drum book (?) called "Lessons With the Greats Vol. 2" and he'd have a
video out soon.
One other thing.... Ken asked Mike if we should write the record label
folks and push for a double CD for their next release. Mike said that DT
would have to decided that first, but it wouldn't hurt for us to write,
so start sending those letters in!!! :)
Jam on, and don't forget to let me know if you want to participate in my
survey! :)

Has anyone heard Enchant's new CD Wounded? I know it's available in
Germany and through musicexpress.com(for $25!) and I just emailed Magna
Carta to see if they were releasing it in the US, but I was wondering if
anyone here had heard it.

Right On! Where do we send them? I'm sure someone here knows the address for DT's management. I don't mind sending email or formal letters for this kind of stuph!
Let's do it! We pulled it of for ACoS, didn't we? Let's show them the power of the YtseJam (power trip, RAH!!!!!)

Here's my quick take on the guitar theory thing before it gets beat into the ground:
1. I play mostly by ear, and learned to play by watching others.
2. After years of doing that, I hit this brick wall so to speak. My guitar playing sort of peaked out, and I was running out of new areas to move into with my music.
3. I hated the thought of trying to learn to actually read music, so I found a great local player who happened to also teach theory.
4. I took a whopping *4* lessons regarding the 7 scale mode cycle in A Minor, and it did more for me than you can even imagine. It opened up a door to guitar playing that had been locked shut and holding me back.
Well, I'm no JP still, but with the basic theory concept under my belt I was soon able to fly up and down the neck soloing and not run out of notes to hit OR go out of key. I was suddenly able to make sense of things and peice the notes together on the neck like a puzzle, and I started writing my own harmony leads.....for those of you considering it, learning some basic theory will really put your playing over the edge. Just practice the 7 scales for about 2 months, remembering to alternate pick each note, and watch your playing blossom to new hieghts!
The moral? A few simple lessons in theory and some practice, for those of us who dread the thought of learning to read sheet music, works wonders. Your fretboard will welcome your every approach, and everyones ears will thank you :)

Hey,
I recorded the two new DT songs from the MP clinic in Dallas into .ra format, and have uploaded them to an ftp site. The first one is Just Let Me Breath, and the other is Raise The Knife. The sound quality pretty much sucks, because it was recorded onto video tape, then copied over, and made a .wav file, and converted it into .ra to conserve size. Both files are the complete songs that Mike played at the clinic. JLMB is about 5.5 mins, and RTK is 12 mins. saveur has been kind enough to keep the files at his ftp site.
It can be found by ftp'ing to: www.cais.com loging: ftp pass: email init directory: /jjens/outgoing
(I accidentally recorded my modem dialing in the middle of JLMB, and I'm to lazy to go back and re-do it, so sorry for that.)
e-mail me and let me know what you think of the files. Also, let me know if anyone else wants a copy of the Portnoy clinic on VHS tape.

First off, two posts in a row of mine have gotten chopped....the same paragraph, it seems. There's this line of dashes like this....
-------------------------------
and that's where the chopped part was. Also, the TOC lists a blank spot immediately after my listing. I thought maybe the first one got screwed up because it was too long, but the second time the post was short. Hm.

Pat Sullivan kindly pointed out,

>Okay, assuming you want to look at attending a concert as a business >transaction, then both parties must live up to the "contract"...and here is >a direct quote from the back of one of my DT ticket stubs (10/20/94 at the >Strand for anyone that's keeping track. :)) > >"Holder agrees by use of this ticket not to transmit or aid in >transmitting any description, account, picture or reproduction of the >game or event to which this ticket is issued"
Yes, this is true. The rules are indeed broken here. My point in the above statement, though, was that I don't see the band as being owed a cut from the bootleggers. Their payment is based solely on their immediate performance.
Shedding light on the contractual aspect of the transaction brings attention to the legal aspects of bootlegging. But we already know that bootlegging is illegal. My overall effort here has to do with whether or not bootlegging is wrong.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Here, let me try to attach the lost paragraph. Not that it's the most important thing ever written, but just so my original statement is complete. Wait a second! The first word in the lost paragraph is "From". I bet that has to do with the paragraph getting treated like a header. Let me try this.....
|Based on my own experience, I have a lot of fun trying to track down DT |bootlegs. And I enjoy them greatly. Whether JLB is having an off-night, or the |fidelity lacking, or the mix is weak, I enjoy them and my being a fan is not |swayed by an off-night. I know we are all human, and I expect imperfection. |Matter of fact, I actually like to see that people are human and make mistakes |from time to time.
(There. I changed the word "from" to "based on". Maybe it'll work now.)

Miss LadyDragon commented,
>Ok Let's say that a "bootlegger" does a phenomenol job at cleaning up a >recording. If in fact, his work is that great, then why not attempt >permission?
If only it were so simple. Getting permission is something I can't defend, seeing as I've never taped a show illegally (yet), so I can only speak as a consumer, and try to defend the subject from that aspect. It would be great if people could get permission from the artist, and in many cases you can. Look at The Dead, Phish (I think), and most recently, Queensryche. Tapers were welcomed at the shows, and I think that's great. If I could go to a DT show knowing that I'd be able to go backstage and say, "Hey Mike, you guys are the best thing to come along since sliced bread. Would it be alright for me to tape the show tonight?" I would. But the chances of that are remote.
>Bootlegged means stolen. End of story. you buy a bootleg, >then you've stolen.
You buy a bootleg, then you've purchased something that someone else taped. I don't see anything as being stolen. Sure, the contract between the band and the taper has been broken, as pointed out by Mr. Sullivan, but the band loses nothing. If the show were never taped, no money would be made by the band. If the show is taped by someone else, again no money would be made by the band. Nothing minus nothing equals nothing. The band loses nothing, and stands the possibility to make current fans.....huge fans. That's what happened to me, that's what happens to a lot of people. That's why I think calling a live recording of this sort a "bootleg" is a misnomer. If I made CD copies of Awake and tried to sell them, THAT would be bootlegging, and the band would definitely be losing money because of it. That is wrong indeed. Taping a show is a breach of contract, not stealing from the band, me thinks.

Mind Control, which is off the Awake tour, has a 4-minute drum solo in the middle of CiaW.

Nick "ProgRockBoy" Guadagnoli asked,
>wHAT HAPPENED TO THE STRING ABOUT THE DEMO VERSION OF TTT VERSUS THE >rELEASED VERSION?? > >I'd like to know the input of others.
First, that echo on the harmonic-dive at the beginning sounds kind of corny to me.
The sample in the I&W version just before "Just let me catch my breath" fill in that empty space nicely. It's absent on the demo version.
The vocal doubling at "I think it's time for a chay-eee-ange" sounds kind of neat.
The backup vocals "It's time to take....the......tiiiiiiiime." sound weak and the cutoffs seem a bit short.
Again, I dig the vocal doubling at "I can see much clearer now, I'm blind."
I recall someone once mentioning that it sounds like MP "messed up" at some point. I never found the so-called mistake. All the playing sounds great on this version, as usual.
The tone of Kev's keyboard during his solo sounds a little thin.
Otherwise, this version is really cool. I like the I&W version better, but this one's still fun to have.

Seeing as there a lot of northeastern Jammers on here, I'd like to just point out that I'm originally from Holyoke, Massachusetts, if any of you know where that is. I'll be home for the holidays if anyone wants to get together.

Actually, MindControl which is off the "Awake" tour has a pretty sick drum solo by Mr. Portnoy. Actually, a damn good boot all around, excellent sound and not alot of audience noise. If you have troubles finding this one, e-mail me and I'll get a copy of it for ya. It's a double disc boot and runs for about 30 to 35 buck. Definatly worth every penny.

Hi all
**WARNING: THIS POSTING CONTAINS INFORMATION ABOUT DREAM THEATER. I AM NOT THE ORIGINATOR OF THIS INFORMATION. I AM JUST PASSING IT ON IN THE HOPE THAT SOME OF YOU MAY FIND IT INTERESTING**
The following is a translation of a review of the Spock's Beard album in the latest catalog of the German mail-order company EMP. Please pay special attention to the statement by Mike Portnoy at the end of the review.
<<< SPOCK'S BEARD - The Light Now we come to a special treat, that should please all the fans of the old heroes in particular. According to the press release, this band is a revelation for all fans of Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd and Dream Theater. I can only agree with this 100%, but when I listen to 'The Light', other names such as ELP, Gentle Giant or Jethro Tull also spring to mind. Malicious tongues could say that the album is just a collection of old quotes in new clothes, but that would be completely wrong, because the firework display that these Americans set off is much more than that. A smile keeps playing across my lips in view of the ease with which this band plays, and the fun that they have doing so. The band plays with such superior competence and confidence that the magazine Rock Hard awarded tops marks of 10, and that even people like Mike Portnoy say that Spock's Beard (what sort of dumb name is that, anyway) is "the best progressive rock band since Marillion". He even asked the boys to be Dream Theater's support band on their next tour. This is an album that you've got to have. >>>
So how about that - Spock's Beard as support on the next Dream Theater tour? Can anybody confirm this? Perhaps somebody going to a Portnoy workshop in the near future?
Definition time: according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary (the only one I can lay my hands on at the time) the verb bootleg is defined as follows: smuggle (especially of liquor), sell illicitly. It does not mean stolen. Perhaps the most (in)famous bootlegger of the 20th century was Al Capone, and as far as I know he never sold CDs of Dream Theater's music (it would be fun to see some steroid pussy security wankers trying to bounce Al and his band of merry pranksters out of Birch Hill, though).
Friday was a lucky day for my CD dealer: he finally had Lemur Voice in stock, so he got to keep his teeth. In fact, he was so impressed by the album, that he even bought one himself for his private listening. I also ordered 'The Light' by Spock's Beard, 'Diva' by the Portugese band Heavenwood, and 'Kveldssanger' by Ulver. I will post reviews when the albums turn up in a week or so.
(A whole post and I didn't mention one single book title or even say fuck once...)

There are two ways in which John Petrucci might solve this problem:
- Get Mike Bahr arrested, and beat up anyone who brings a tape recorder to a DT show
OR
- Don't play any sub-standard performances.
Which do you think would be easier?
