    Greetings!

It's Nov 9 today and the G3 tour is done. We ended with a triumphant final performance last night in Seattle WA. During the jam at the end of the night, when Joe introduced Steve Vai and Eric Johnson, they came onstage (to Joe's surprise) in bald caps and sunglasses, spitting images of Satch himself. During "Red House", mebers from Vai's band and Johnson's band stormed the stage, showering the players with silly-string. It was an incredible ending to an incredible tour, and who should we have the extreme honor of meeting backstage than Al Hendrix, Jimi's father. I can't imagine a better ending to a better tour.

We're hitting the road here in America again in about a week or so. Here are the tour dates we have now...PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE DATES ARE *TENTATIVE*. That means that they may change at any time. We'll send out confirmed dates as we can, but check with local radio or Ticketmasters for more info.

It's ridiculously ignorant to say something like this. There are reasons WHY things sound good in music, and theory is basically structured around those reasons. It's there to help you get at the sounds that you want to hear melodically and harmonically relating to other sounds. Theory is what tells you what your ear thinks sounds cool over say a Eb maj+b13 chord. Once you understand something like that, it will help you write and play better. I'm sure anybody who has been on both sides of the plate when it comes to this theory stuff will tell you to learn all you can and use it in the manner that suits your music most...

He meant that they have good taste in guitars not that Ibanez guitars automatically equal cool songs. Hey guys what's the deal with some people's attitudes? All I see is stuff like "you think that? well I (being highly superior to you) would never think/say/be influenced by that!"

Come on guys we're all on the same team here.

For anyone interested, The LiT drum solo is approx 4:42, and the LiT TLF guitar solo clocks in at 7:12.

I don't know much about theory, simply because I don't have time. I hardly have enough time to do occasional noodling.

Personally, I would love it. I see bootlegs as the ultimate compliment that a band can receive. Think about it: people love you so much that they want everything associated with you that they can get their hands on: t-shirts, stickers, posters, etc. Bootlegs are included in that list. If someone is willing to plunk down $25 bucks to hear a live performance of you, you should be flattered. And as far as it being my worst performance, I'd rather have people clammering to buy an "illegal" copy of my worst performance than to have no one interested enough in my band to buy my official releases.

Wouldn't you want to have a say in whether or not people > get to hear your fuck ups?

I'm not perfect, so why give the illusion that I am? I personally get a kick out of hearing my favorite bands fuck up. It makes them seem more human.

and if you DID decide to let people hear > it..then wouldn't you want a piece of that $$$

Here is where I think you have a point. One of the common rationales of the anti-bootleg stance is that it takes away from the revenue a band might earn from the sale of official releases. I think this line of thinking is bullshit. Show me one person on this list that owns a bootleg ("Lost In The Sky," "Mind Control," one of Mike Bahr's releases, etc) that does not own a Dream Theater album. In reality, people buy the official releases, become a fan, buy bootlegs, and become even bigger fans However, the only time that I can see bootlegs taking away from revenue is if your band is planning on releasing a live album from your tour. Then maybe I can understand (although a true fan would buy the official live album as well). But shy of that, I think bootlegs are a great idea. I wish a lot of bands would be a little allowing of tapers, ala The Grateful Dead. Hell, even Queensryche allowed taping on their last tour.

Heather Powers <ladydragon@earthlink.net> wrote, >Subject: Bootleg Hatred

    >I can't understand why anyone with a brain could rationalize the >selling of bootlegs.

It seems to me that this subject has both an upside and a downside. The upside would be for the die-hard fans who are just plain aching for more more more, and couldn't give a hoot whether a performance is "subpar". The downside, I guess, is when an artist who, after a semi-fruitful career, now is broke because his/her career has gone down the tubes for whatever reason, and meanwhile some snake bootleggers are raking in lots of dough selling overpriced recordings of this starving individual's previous hard work. I've heard of people getting rich with this sort of business, and yes IMO there's a problem with that.

    >Ok i can understand wanting to hear...EVERYTHING >that a band plays, expecially bands like DT that are so talented. Yet if >you bootleg a tape, what gives you the right to make money off of >someone elses efforts?

The way I see it, the band is making money from the actual performance. You pay to see them play, you enjoy it, you have (hopefully) pleasant memories. End of business transaction. If the band wanted to make even more money, I suppose they could have every show recorded and sell lots and lots of their own live performances. But they don't. Why? Maybe the record company thinks it won't make *them* any money, or maybe they think live albums should only be released every several years just to appease the fans. Hell if I know. But some of us can't seem to get enough. And if the band/label isn't willing to keep the fans happy by making lots of stuff available, then the fans have to do it themselves. Tape the show.

So the ones sneaky enough to tape shows could very well try to rape fans by selling overpriced bootlegs. Some people do that. That's where I think it's wrong. But if someone thinks they can make a modest profit (gotta cover the costs and have enough left for a meal from time to time) while providing a service to the fans, then I have no problem with that.

Here's my analogy: You go and buy a car. Then you go and *use* the new car to deliver pizzas. You're now making money off of the car that the dealership sold you. Does the dealership say, "Hey, you're using the car we sold you to make money. We deserve to get a cut of whatever you make using the car *we* sold you."? No, they don't. Why? Because the business transaction between you and the dealership is complete. If you want to take advantage of the fact that you now have a means to make a buck to pay your utilities, good for you. Use the car, deliver some pizzas, earn a living, whatever.

    >DT aren't up there so that you can make a buck >off of them, they're there to play a great show and hopefully make some >money of their own in the process.

You pay to *see* them play and *hear* it LIVE. After that, there is no more obligation between the merchant and the patron. If you're able to record the show, great. If you can sell it at a reasonable cost to a die-hard fan, great. It's the concept of being an entrepreneur. Make a buck. Whether or not you rape someone in the process is another story. But in the long run, I think there is an even more solid fan-base because the fire gets fed. There is a desire to obtain obscure recordings of your favorite artist, and an excitement from having and enjoying this rarity. And it is available no other way.

    > Besides the dollar factor, how would you feel (considering that most of >us on here are musicians) if some 12 year old kid with a tape recorder >was walking around town making money off of tapes of your bands worst >performance. Wouldn't you want to have a say in whether or not people >get to hear your fuck ups?

    ------------------------------

With all this in mind, yes, you do have a point with an artist not wanting everyone to hear a less-than-perfect performance. The money thing, I don't think is an issue, as described by my car-analogy.

For example, let's consider the efforts of Mr. Mike Bahr. He's getting his hands on stuff that most of us could never find, he's cleaining it up and putting it on CD, and he's selling it to fans like us. Is he raping anyone? I don't think so. Is he making a profit? I'd imagine so, and he deserves to, since he puts a lot of effort into making these projects a reality. And besides, he's got bills to pay just like everyone else. Are people being made happy by his efforts? Absolutely. Is $25 too much for a CD? That all depends on what kind of CD it is, I think. If it's mass produced and costs pennies to make, then yes, a mark-up of that size is unreasonable. But this is not the case with his discs. He's printing up 500 discs each. That's it. And besides, $25 is a competitive price for a boot CD anyway. So with that in mind, I'm happy to shell out 25 bucks for a disc.

Other bootleg manufacturers also do a tremendous service to us fans by putting together a quality disc. Look at stuff made by Why Not? Records and Kiss The Stone Records. They make the best bootlegs I've ever heard, and it is these sorts of things that make me like DT even more.

The way I see it, a "bootleg" is an illegal copy of copyrighted material, and selling these copies is wrong. However, a "live recording" is just that. And since there's no other way to obtain these recordings, we have to do it ourselves.

My 1.5 cents. Thanks for listening.

    Now Playing: Dream Theater, "Antiquities".

    ..and plays drums!!!

Just got back from another cool afternoon with Mike Portnoy. He did yet another great drum clinic here at Hauer Music in Dayton, Ohio!!!

Some notes: -I guess he cut the Dallas clinic short because of the boxing match...hehe.

-Metropolis Pt II is written!! Just the middle (instrumental) section is longer than MetPt1...coolness.

-They have over 2 hours of material, and *he* is still pushing for a double album...

-Not recording yet...I asked him when he was signing, and it's likely going to come out in the summer of '97- not Jan/Feb...longer waits suck. :(

-I tried to get the album name out of him, but he wouldn't tell... :)

He saw my brother's Galactic Cowboys' shirt, and commented about it during the clinic- that was cool. Then my bro caught him in the bathroom at the same time (purely coincidence). Mike said that he really enjoyed playing with GC (cool!). He also mentioned that he's seen some of the posts on the 'Jam. (He's lurking ever so often...)

HEY MIKE!! IF YOU'RE READING THIS...GREAT CLINIC! YOU RULE!!
