If you read the liner notes on ACOS it says "Many thanks must be given to
the online Ytse-Jammers who helped make this recording finally become a
reality" since i wasnt on the jam at the time ...i dont know "EXactly" what
happened..i guess they swamped the label with requests for them to record acos..

Can anybody out there help me? I couldn't get Rush tickets on Saturday
because of prior commitments that I couldn't avoid. I was going to get a
ticket for the Dec. 15th at Meadowlands. Did anybody pick up an extra tht
they want to get rid of? Please put me in your address book and let me
know if any of your tickets fall through and turn into extras. (I've never
seen Rush before and I'm dying to see them!) I live in NYC, so either the
Meadowlands on the 15th or Long Island on the 14th would be incredible! I
have an extra DT New Haven ticket for Dec. 6th as collateral! I hope to
hear from a very generous and sympathetic jammer! -Adam

>statement, though, was that I don't see the band as being owed a cut from >the bootleggers. Their payment is based solely on their immediate performance.
This is not true. If you look on the CD liner notes you will see the following:
"All songs =A9 Octa Music, Inc./Ytse Jam, Inc. adm. by WB Music Corp., ASCAP= . Lyrics used by persmission. All rights reserved."
All of the songs are copyrighted material so the artist is entitled to compensation EVERY time the songs are played, printed, etc. Organizations such as ASCAP and BMI are responsible for collecting royalities from radio airplay, public performance (covers at clubs), etc.
I own several bootleg CDs, tapes and videos but I can definite see an artist point if they don't approve. Would you like for someone to make money off of your copyrighted material? To anyone who thinks bootleggers do not make money I have some ocean front property here in Tennesse to sell you. Companies like KTS records are in business to make money, not to provide us with bootleg CDs. Believe me, you would never see a CD from them if they were not making a nice profit.
My point is this. Buy bootleg CDs if you want to but do not get down on the artists for not being thrilled about it or trying to stop it.
Enough of that. I will be flying from Memphis to Philadelphia on December 14 and driving to Old Bridge for the Dream Theater show at Birch Hill!!!!!!! I would like to meet some fellow jammers there. Please post to the jam or email me and let me know what is going on!!!!!!!

Hey All ...
One quick thing. If you have emailed me in the last few days and are waiting for a reply, please me patient, I am very overloaded right now because of alot of changes in my life, but things should be calming down soon. I plan on sending the jam an update on alot of stuff tonight hopefully. Please don't mail me a repeat mail, I already have almost 300 emails in my Inbox, not including all my ytsejams and other mailing lists.

>I can't understand why anyone with a brain could rationalize the >selling of bootlegs.
Well, there are certain obvious concepts that are being overlooked by some people.
1) The reason that bootlegs sell is because there is a market for them. 2) Similar to the war on drugs and prostitution, it is very difficult to squash the market. 3) If the band does not pursue this market then others should be able to.
There is also a basic opinion and other jammers should rally behind this concept !!!
1) DT should pursue this market to strengthen their fan base (read on for creative solution).
I have long been a proponent of what Fish does (former singer for Marillion) to please diehard fans and combat bootlegging. After basically every leg of each tour, he puts out a double live CD of one of the better shows of the leg. That's right, that means a new double live CD about every nine months. (One of the best performances that I have heard of his - the New Years Eve show 1991 - is captured on one such CD.) He knows that the magic is there on one night and not on the next and can choose which show to put out. Too bad the material is just not as exciting as it used to be.
The source is a DAT direct from the soundboard. No playing around with the recording ($$) is required. The sound is slightly less than one would get from an official live CD but is still quite decent. And, so what. In general, the quality is much better than that of a bootleg. And, there are musical and technical screwups every now and then but again, so what. Does anyone want to turn in DoE just because KM lays a major boner at the beginning of LtL ??
Since Fish keeps doing this, I have to assume that the effort at least breaks even. Someone connected with the band should consider something like this. They could even run the gig through the Fan Club, which would of course necessitate a healthy raise for Neil.......

Huh?
If it's illegal, then it's wrong. Bootlegging is illegal, therefore it's= wrong.
What you are trying to do (and may in fact succeed at) is to prove whether it can be justified to do something "wrong". Even if you do prove that, it doesn't change the fact that the act itself is wrong. It may be justified, but it's still "wrong".
-----
>That is wrong >indeed. Taping a show is a breach of contract, not stealing from the band, >me thinks.
I'm reminded of a line I heard from some comedian about how the Jeffrey Dahmer case reflected the desensitization of people: "Now you have people saying to one another 'You know, I could kill a guy, maybe.....I wouldn't *EAT* him or anything, I mean, I'm not *sick* or nothing'"
Or, for another example, saying "If I'm driving and I hit a pedestrian, that's wrong, but if I just run a red light, that's okay". Yes, in that context, running ared light seems rather insignificant and no harm is done to anyone. That still doesn't change the fact that you broke the law. I'd like to see you use that type of arguement after the cop pulls you over. :)

I only post this because this definition seems to more directly apply to taping concerts, which definitely qualify as "unlawfully made".

Okay, if you're going to drag out Jeffrey Dahmer, I'll one up you and pull out the classic. Hitler made lots of laws. Some of them were rather inconvenient for large numbers of people. Was it "wrong" to break those laws? No.
That's all I have to say, find a new premise and continue your argument :)

Re: DT thread.
I too have the Silent Man single with the demo of TTT. Especially interesting on that demo is the absence of the intro samples (hold on-wait a minute-comeon-), and the spacey Petrucci harmonic. Notice that he misses that harmonic early on in the attack, but somehow the echoes regenerate and produce the pitch he was looking for in the decay!!! How the hell...? Anyway, since then the only clean version of that harmonic is on the actual album cut from I&W. The LiTokyo harmonic was especially sad-he kicked in the clean tone a bit early. Even the Awake tour live stuff-he just keeps on missing them!!!!

Yes, yes! Somebody please try to confirm this! I saw Spock's Beard last year in LA at Progfest '95 and they were everything that this reviewer and Mike said.
They'd be a great opener, although some of the DT crowd may not appreciate them. Of course, I don't mean any of you on this list...

A funny thing happened at the G3 opening show in concord. I'm not sure if anyone heard or has seen about it. First Off, VAI SHOULD HAVE CLOSED. Good God, MAN!!! I know Satch taught him and all but, FAAAAKKK!!! It was like watching a fireworks show!! If anyone wants to push for a good pairing for Dream Theater's "GODOT" (or whatever the funk it will be) tour, then consider Mr. Vai as an opening act. (NEVER HAPPEN, right?)
Anyway, the funny part was that not only was poor Mr. Johnson, an otherwise astounding performer, way out of his league with the pseudo-jizz-jazz riff-raff he was playing against Vai and Satch, his whole rig quit on his in the middle of a "burning" solo in front of God and everybody!!! I felt sorry for him. I think his ES-335 (a big jazz guitar) burned out on him--he didn't use it for the rest of the night until towards the end of his section... Otherwise he was good.
Until then, always looking for a way to snaek Dream Theater into a Dream Theater posting group (doy!!!) this is Dave Gamble (#4) Stockton, Ca.

Re: James and WDATU
--- y'know, to a new jammer such as myself, typing the anacronyms for Dream Theater references is sometimes harding that typing the whole f'in thang!!!
It defence of James LaBrie (if anyone's attacked him)- He has a marvelous album singing voice and adapts operatic music well in the studio. I could not imagine ever having that much passion and range. He rarely overkills a song or lyric with "too much" of anything-including metal.
In defence of Dominici-I'm too young as a jammer to have ever heard him sing a DT song live, but I've heard it sounds exactly the same as on the album, or at least more consistent (like Geddy Lee with a head cold to me, though). If we can be honest, James' powerful voice often gives out on him on the road. He struggles on a few things (especially on Wake UP CD's). I'm not saying that anyone could do better or that it is completely horrible. It's just that he is not indestructable.
In closing, someone will always find something shitty to say about vocalists and lyrics. Being a fan of ALL types of Van Halen, you know what I'm going through now with this Lead Singer Disease fiasco.
Take heart, all. LaBrie Is and will always BE the MAN fronting DT.
P.S. Where the hell is Dominici, anyway? I thought I saw him in the passenger seat of our Plumbers van with Nuno Bettencourt (ouch!)

At the Mike Portnoy clinic, Mike mentioned to my brother that there is a DT boot with GC singing along with them on some tracks. He said that when they were on tour together, GC used to come out and sing some songs with DT (maybe they were 'rehearsing' on the LiT video), and Mike used to go out and sing along with them on 'Pump Up the Space Suit.'
Anyway, does anybody know what bootleg has some guest appearances by the Galactic Cowboys along with DT? And, is it available on CD?
