Wilmo asked about the difference in the booklets for LATM between the
Japanses and European versions and of course the Japanese booklet is
different. There is a page of stuff written in Japanese. anyone ever
    translate this yet?

I don't get it. Bootleg recordings are not competing in any way with major
label releases. The record companies do not loose any money whatsoever ! Did
anyone NOT buy the DT live video because they already some bootleg.....of
course not Etc...Etc..Etc.... If anything, they strengthen the fan base. The
people that buy bootlegs will go out of their way to support the band. If DT
had a million fans like us, East West records would make BILLIONS and would not
    LOOSE a cent !!

When you buy bootleg CDs, you're paying a lot of $$$ ($50 for a double CD)
Next time you find a store that sells bootlegs. You'll find bands like
DT, Metallica, VH, a lot of bands that do not allow taping at shows. So,
a lot of the recording is done on a "stealth mission". You probably won't
find bootlegs by Phish, though, because they sell "taper tickets" at their
shows and allow taping. It's not a secret at their shows. Hence, finding
a Phish bootleg (for instance) is not hard to do on the internet, and
nobody SELLS them. What's my point? If DT doesn't want people selling
bootlegs, maybe they should just allow tapers into the show. It would
produce a much better recording of their shows, and you wouldn't find so
many CDs in the stores with ridiculous price tags on them. Just my
    opinion.

I have a video from the Warfield in San Francisco in June 1993 and GC came
out on stage to sing backups on TTT. Also at that show, Mike Portnoy came
out and moshed around the stage during GC's set before stage diving right
over my head. I also met him that evening in the lobby just after they
opened the door ;) Ahh, what a night.

Excuse me, but can we please be spared the chain letters? This kind of
mindless bullshit has absolutely nothing to do with the band the list is
associated with or music in general, and is just a complete waste of time
    and effort.

    Hey all,
So when do you think we'll hit #2112? At the present rate, I think
we'll hit it about mid December. I'm not after a poll or anything, it
was just a thought. Anyone have an idea when TNMS will hit 2112? Way
after we do, I know that. This should piss them off. But hey, if they
would only clutter their list with meaningless bullshit then they too
could reach it sooner :> And I'm a fine one to talk....

First off, I want to thank Mike Bahr for posting that stuff about
bottlegging laws. I have always wondered about the exact nature of
the laws surrounding copywrights and stuff, and that seemed to clear
it up some for me (not to mention some of the other discussion on the
topic). This is a thread that I have found particularly interesting
    and informative. Thanks.

I just wanted to let all of you know that last night my band, Room 213, got
airplay on the radio show Texas Trax on KISS FM here in San Antonio. We
just gave them our DAT like last thursday or friday, and they played it on
Monday! The whole band is really psyched. Did any of you SA-area jammers
catch it? It's called Firefly. We're not exactly progressive, but
definately more complex than the average grunge or alternative band.
Thanx for listening to the ravings of a crazed fiend!

That song would be "Through Different Eyes". It's on the 1989 release (the
one before Parallels) Perfect Symmetry. They have this thing with geometry,
    so don't ask me :)
It's more DT'ish than Parallels I would say, especially the song "At Fates
Hands". Lots of time changes, great drumming, extremely high vocals....all
the trademark good stuff that we jammers like (sorry to make the
generalization for all you who don't like that).

Ok well first I need to ask you what your knowledge of fretboard theory and
experience with the guitar is. Have you ever examined each of these players
styles? I haven't gone in depth, but judging by my ear and my limited but
sufficient theoretical knowledge I truly find Johnson to be the "best"
player of the 3. I know, I shouldn't say best because you're going to say,
"don't compare! they're both great! it's not fair to compare!". But there
are things that make one player better. Listen to the solos in Camel's Night
Out compared with Satch Boogie for example. Or if you're going to say, "Well
this solo by Satch is better!!", fine, listen to any Satch solo. You will
find repetitious licks and phrasing mostly based on pentatonics. While
rocking, he rarely constructs melody in his solos. Flying in a Blue Dream is
a great song. But listen what happens after the verse and chorus melodies
are playing, he just goes off in his own direction and it adds nothing to
the song. This is where Johnson is different, he will incorporate the
melodic idea of the song into the solos and bend and twist the ideas. You
can never get sick of his solos, the solo at the end of Pavillion is my
favorite example of this as well as Cliffs of Dover obviously. Much of this
is due to EJ's use of appregios and guide tones within the phrasing. When
used diatonically they fit along with the progression, but he'll also stick
some non-diatonic stuff (Camel's Night Out) to spice things up in the solo.

    >This opinion was formed watching the final jam at the G3 concert.
    >Vai would come in on these blues songs and play his typical shred solos,

You must have him confused with someone else, he easily blew the other guys
    off the stage.

    >And Joe would play the blues. (yes, probably in a minor pentatonic.)
    >

Maybe my problem is I find the blues boring most of the time...

    >if you are a jazz player, as I feel Johnson truly is at heart,

    >

In Johnson's instructional video he talks about how his playing is a mix of
    these players...
Jimi Hendrix, Steve Ray Vaughn, Wes Montgomery, Jeff Beck, and uh...some
other guy. The only jazz I see there is Wes Montgomery. Johnson is from
texas and has a lot of that in his roots, so don't pigeonhole him as a jazz
    player.

    >but Satch still does, and always will, rule.

Sorry but Jeff Beck truly started (and ruled long before Satch) most of the
stuff Satch is doing. Check out Blow by Blow to hear this...

anyone remember Cacophony and racer-X??? does any one have the tabs to altitudes
by Jason Baker? I always wanted to play this one.

my all time five " will Play" (it's like I can't play them yet but someday) list:

    1. Altitudes : J Baker
    2. Conversations : S. Grappelly <sp?> & L. Subramaniam
    3. juice: S. Vai
    4. Metropolice 1: ha ha!!!
    5. the solo to practice what you preach: Testament

of course there are other tits and bits but may be some other time:)

    to that thing about Ibanez:

i think what I heard was Ibanez was producing better custom made stuff
at a lower price then the other manufactueres when the 80's guitar thing
boomed. so a lot of people went for Ibanez. and unfortunately thus came the
vibe of " if you're playing an Ibanez then you're a shredder". one
of my friends asked me, if all the les paus guys are sloppy piece of shits.
I played the ozzy tribute to him.

IMHO all true musicians pick up their instruments according to the need and
requirements of the stuff they are trying to produce.

I wanted to say something about the theory thread but I guess I wont :)

last of all, one more request, can someone tape me wdatu 'cuz I don't
think i want to spend 30 bucks right now (sorry mike) . please e-mail me
    personally.

and Pleeeeeeaaaaaaaasee, let us know where to send the mail for the new dt
    double cd.

If you don't have "Handfull of Rain" you should get it, as well as
the one prior to it (title ??). It is dedicated to Chris. Did he die? It
is a little more artsy than the other two mentioned, and a lot more musical,
they do a few more Dream Theater-esque time changes and the like. But the
    sound is definitely 'Tage.
