I've heard a few good comments about an almost 'hard disk recorder':
Samplitude. Anyway, I don't have that but I have Cakewalk Audio 4.0
and I like it cuz it's not just about recording audio tracks, but
the MIDI sequencer part is also great. If you need it I can upload
to an ftp site or send in e-mail (hey, it's illegal but who cares).
The number of the recordable tracks depends on your processor, memory
and soundcard (I have a GUS so I can't record and playback at the same
time since GUS is not a full duplex card).

Somebody told me, that the sample from CiAW drum solo from Mind Control
(Heardadrummagetwhicked) is from Public Enemy's Bring The Noise. It was
a long time finding a lamer who has a Public NME cd that has BTN but
there is not even a similar sample on the whole shit cd. Fuck! Could
you explain there is a maxi cd or something?? Ok, my friend has the
PE/Anthrax version, and there it is, but I can't sample from there
since there is a drum track behind... If you know where can I get
the clean sample, it would be great to let me know finally. The
perfect thing would be if you do the sampling and send me the wav. :)

I have his first solo album and it's great. It has two songs from his
setlist on the G3 tour, including the "tuning knob" song, although he does
it all over the album. It's all fingerstyle and varies between folk, that
medieval stuff, and some good blues boogie. I strongly reccomend it.

This is what I said 2 days ago...

    >> I haven't gone in depth, but judging by my ear and my limited but
sufficient theoretical knowledge I truly find Johnson to be the "best"
player of the 3. I know, I shouldn't say best because you're going to say,
"don't compare! they're both great! it's not fair to compare!". But there
are things that make one player better...

    And this is what happened...

    >
    >Not a flame, but this is totally a silly thing to say. Each of these
    >players has his own style... fuck! These three players are responsible for
    >starting THOUSANDS of guitarists, and are three of the most copied players
    >in the world. I would NEVER dare to say Satch is mostly Pentatonic in
    >comparison with EJ. I mean... I've done a lot of EJ licks (from his videos)
    >and they're almost ALL pentatonic... whereas Satch plays mostly in lydian.
    >Eric doesn't do much tapping, no, but to say that the fact that Satch and
    >Vai DO tap puts them behind is also sorta... weird. Eric excels in
    >alternate picking. Satch excels in legato, groove and melody... Vai does all
    >of this and more... but they are at the core equals. They can all do lots
    >of things the others can't.
    >

Do I know the jam well or what? :)

Anyways, I don't want to continue on with this so I'll end on this
note...Yes they're all great, I've already said that when we started this
discussion. But no, I do not feel threatened by them since they're so
successful that it's unfair to compare them. I'm sure there are better
players out there anyways, these 3 are just the most successful and got the
most media hype over the past 10 years. If these were 3 street musicians who
were completely unsuccessful (unlikely) and you walked by wouldn't you
    compare them?

cover played. I believe they pay a flat rate to allow bands to play covers

Its obvious those who critizice him dont know the meaning of the word
FEELING... I saw G3 in DC (from second row), he speaks with his guitar,
always getting the perfect tone... I liked him more than johnson or
    vai...

pentatonic???... ok, his fastest licks are pentatonic, but the solos are
    mostly lydian...

    just my opinion...

Mike is probably of Russian descent. The reason I say this is because Ayn Rand, who was born in Russia, had American relatives (who presumably immigrated in the nineteenth century) whose last name was Portnoy. She stayed with the Portnoys when she arrived in the United States. (That was before she established herself as a novelist-philosopher and strange people like me quoted her in their signature files.) I used to wonder if Mike and Ayn Rand were related, but it was probably a pipe dream of mine. Portnoy might be a common name in Russia.

All of this Johnson vs. Satriani discussion is, actually, quite interesting to me. Some of the facts have certainly got mushed, and I may do some of that myself, but I thought I might have a little something to add to it....

First of all, we're talking about two tremendous players....arguably, the two best working today (I'D say that, anyhow -- possibly adding David Gilmour, Alex Lifeson, and John Petrucci to that mix). Any discrepancy between the two players is pretty minimal, in terms of talent....the difference seems to be mostly stylistic. And, interestingly enough, I've seen them together twice, the first time, Eric Johnson smoking Satriani, the second time (on the G3 tour), Satriani having the better night. And I've seen them both on their own, Satriani in '90 and Johnson in '92, and both shows were amazing...among the best I've ever seen.

Johnson's playing is probably a little more lyrical and melodic, on average, than Satriani's. He's got more of a country and folk influence to the charged blues-rock that's at the foundation of both of their styles. EJ uses pedal tones a lot and hops between octaves quite a bit in the context of a short lick. Uses very, very wide arpeggios. But yes, he's absolutely pentatonic. Sometimes he plays MAJOR pentatonic lines, which is relatively unusual in the blues-rock context. It's another thing that defines him. And he's a master improviser...I would say that he's on par with guys like Coltrane and Pastorius, where his ability to THINK musically, to come up with good ideas, is just amazing. And Johnson, especially on the "Venus Isle" tunes, as explored Eastern modalities to a far greater extent than he had.

Satriani is clearly more of a rock player than Johnson....and he DOES play a lot of hot-rodded blues lines. He also has a thing to exotic scales....aside from his Lydian playing, he does things like "The Enigmatic" which is based on ths use of on the Enigmatic scale. He plays Phrygian and Locrian lines, which are pretty exotic, fairly often, though perhaps not as often as someone like Marty Friedman. He's a schooled rock player, combining the appreciation of Hendrix, Clapton, and Beck with modern, wild ideas.

At any rate, both guys are awfully good players, as I said, with fairly similar backgrounds, considering that Johnson's a Southern guy and Satriani's a Bay-Area-by-way-of-Long-Island guy.
