First of all, a big THANK YOU to those of you who visited the Lang Music site
as a favor to me...the page (www.langmusic.com) got over 30 hits last night,
and I'm willing to bet they were all Jammers! I *really* appreciate your help.

Second I'd like to commend Bafu on the Steve Vai review. I haven't bothered
to join the petty arguements over "who was better in G3", but I must say that
Steve Vai is without a doubt my favorite, and Bafu managed to describe all
of the reasons why: He can blues, he can metal, he can whammy, he can acoustic,
he can compose, and he can definitely entertain! The man is a showman beyond
all guitar showman I've ever seen. Anyway, I had to quote
    some Bafu on this one:

    >One word: outrageous. Nevermind the obvious auditory aspects of his
    >persona, this guy had MOOVES. And he never repeated any of them, not once.
    >Moove after moove after moove. What a clown. He should release a videotape
    >detailing his on-stage antics.

    NO DOUBT!

    >What really struck me about his style was his freedom of movement while
    >playing. It was as if he would only put his hands on the guitar when he
    >had to. He was so loose and free, he was a pleasure to watch.

Total control...he *is* one with the guitar :)

    >Someone I spoke to at the show thought Vai "relied too heavily on the
    >whammy bar," which makes little sense to me because the whammy bar is
    >attached to Vai's guitar. It's a permanent fixture. Why this person didn't

This bullshit with people whining about the
whammy just makes me laugh...Vai helped me develop my whammy technique, and
    there
are hundreds of guitar players out there that can't use it properly. Vai
    goes beyond
using the Whammy bar properly...he turns it into another instrument and can
    do things
with it that the people ragging on him can only dream about.

Next I have to commend/quote Vince:

    >From: "Vincent G. LuPone" <vgl@u.arizona.edu>

    > I'm sick to death of all these people saying bad things about
    >Satch's playing. Ten to one you guys can't even come close to what he's doing.
    > And about comparing him to EJ, or Vai, please! This is what they
    >did the G3 tour about! They did the tour to show that there is no
    >competition between the three guys. They all love and respect each other's
    >music. To say that one is better than another is ludicrous IMHO. There is
    >a point at which a guitarist becomes ELITE. All these three have that
    >status; rightfully so. They kick ass, all three of them. Now that's
    >something that really can't be argued. They're good. Real good.

AMEN VINCE! You totally have your head on straight man! It's good to have a
    favorite
of the 3 (mine obviously being Vai), but they ALL kick major ass, and I bet
    they can
all play much better than *most* of us on this list...but better is not the
    point. The
point is they each bring a new and different aspect of approaching the
    guitar, to us,
and each of them has something special that should be heard and induldged
    in...and
most of all; SHARED, which is exactly what they're doing.

    Peace,
    buster

Just for the record, the version with PE and Anthrax is on Anthrax' "Attack of the Killer B's." The PE-only version is on a PE album whose title escapes me at the moment (but I have it at home and can look later, if anyone wants to know. E-mail me if so).

Yesterday I was watching a video of Extreme live, this was a video of their last tour and Mike Mangini was with them (people who saw any G3 show knows Mike is great) and before Play With Me, Mike plays a solo, I was with a friend who is drummer, and he was really amazed of the way Mike played the drums, he said that he is very fast, that he can play like left and right handed and that he never saw anybody play like him (he is a great DT fan) he said that the only person who can play like that is Castronovo, can anyone say whats better on Mangini and whats better in Portnoy? that would be interesting...

Enough with the G3 tour already. We all know that they are the three top players in the world, regardless of who is better. It's just personal taste. But lets keep perspective here folks. None can compare to John Petrucci :) The man is lightning. And if your going to insist on "worlds greatest guitar player" titles, what about Yngwie Malmstein??? Is that spelled right?

While not always true, a very large percentage of Armenians have names that end in *ian*, unless they've changed them (*ian* means *son of...*, if I'm not mistaken); Cher is an Armenian who grew up in the Fresno area. Fresno (& the San Joaquin Valley), California has one of the largest population of Armenians outside of Armenia itself. My unit manager is Armenian Cool diversity! Now is the time to kill the legality issue of bootlegs, AGAIN. We've gone this path at least once before our latest Y'Jammers logged in. And I won't mention it again, however...

The Majesty series offers many of us (who have never had) the opportunity, to hear DT in live performance. This enhances (at least for me) the chances that I will make a greater effort to attend a live performance, should such occur within reasonable distance of my residence. The Majesty series also offers a historical perspective on DT, i.e. *Oliver's Twist* as the musical origins of PMU & Erotomania, etc.; it also offers us the many changes throughout the evolution of *A Change of Seasons*, since it occurs at least 3X in the Majesty series. It also offers us some of the DT tunes that will probably never be recorded for various reasons, but offer us insight into DT versatility & musical interests/abilities (I like the jazz of *Long Island Expressway* and the piano inclusion at the end of TTT on AQ.) And now that Christmas approaches...we have the different versions of *O Holy Night* (I'm glad James didn't alter the lyrics at all on AD).

    That's my opinion, at least.

Eric "No Eye Contact" Johnson went on after Vai, which I felt to be a rather uncomfortable shifting of gears. He had his mannerisms, yes, but as for stage presence I can only offer this analogy...

    Johnson : Vai :: Bleach : Ebola

He played fantastically though, and while Vai's music could hypnotize just from the visual spectacle exploding before your eyes and the sheer intensity, Johnson's music actually got my head nodding. I don't mean nodding forward or backward, I mean nodding like moving my left ear closer to my left shoulder, then my right ear to my right shoulder, etc. It was a joyous set. He did an extended acappella solo which lasted I think ten minutes. It was beautiful and tranquil. It really showed off his mastery of the two-notes-per-string techniques (the most well-known example being the pentatonic scale). And I thought Steve Stevens and Zakk Wylde were good at this stuff. Shit...

"That's Eric Johnson, the guy in black?" --man sitting to my left, regarding the motionless fellow playing lead guitar during Johnson's set.

I didn't see him use his whammy bar once. It really floored me that all of his quick whole-step bends were done with his fingers. He played with his thumb visible over the top of the neck, something I've never been able to do. During vibratos, the only part of his left arm touching the guitar was the tip of the fretting finger. I didn't understand how he could do this. There was a lot about his basic technique that was over my head. His technique made mine look like tar (thick, sloppy, and with no fluidity whatsoever). Boy was he graceful, moving those chords around, those trademark intervals...plus his voice wasn't bad either. His backdrop was several large white sails stretched out to cover the entire back wall, upon which were projected an array of warm and cool splashes of lighting, blues and greens that would shift to deep reds for different parts of the songs. It was very intimate despite Johnson's meditative state of playing.

He bowed politely after every song, even if the stage lights died before his final note. You could see his silhouette split vertically in half then re-form to a standing figure. A musician with true class.

I have to skim over the 'jams, (not much time) so I must have missed it:

How do you subscribe to voices? or is it still a concept?

I don't know how many of you got the little joke, but those "sails" in the background weren't sails at all. If you looked closer, you'd see that they were in the shape of G-strings (the women's bathing suit). Being that the concert was called G3, there were 3 Gs up in the background. :) Peace be with you and God bless.

This is a letter straight from Trent Gardner:

    > >The last studio sessions are in December.I expect TOW to be available > >by the end of the first quarter of 97.Check back around the middle of > >January and I should be able to give you an exact release date. > > > >TG

Now, on the ICE magazine, they list the new album as Janruary 28th. I don't know if that's correct, but i'll ask trent first chance i get
