Someone posted about Petrucci .ra files on the Mesa Boogie Homepage:

            http://www.mesaboogie.com/US/Artists/dt/

So I had to go check it out.

On there, you can only access the Petrucci .ram files. .Ram files
are used by RealAudio players to find a .ra file somewhere on the net and
play it. You can download the .ram file, but it's only a director to the
.ra file. Do I still have everyone? :)
In other words, you can't download the .ra files, but I'm sure someone out
there somewhere has a copy (hint, hint...).

Anyway, I have had absolutely no success finding the real .ra files
because they are under a protected system of some kind. I tried to record
the playback from the RealAudio player I have to .wav format, but I found
out that the RA player uses the wave device to play, therefore I cannot
record these files directly to my PC. The only way that I can record these
.ra files is to tape (I have my PC hooked up to a stereo).

I'd like to know two things:

    1) Does anyone have a copy of these .ra files? If so I'd appreciate having
    a copy. Thank you.

    2) Where did these sound files come from? On the page, it says that
Petrucci recorded and produced them himself, but I'm strongly inclined to
believe the other DT members were playing in these sound files. Is this
stuff some new DT material? If so I'm a very happy camper because it's a
bit heavier than normal DT stuff, but still just as progressive. IMHO it
sounds like one of Pantera's first 2 albums, but played w/ style and it's
    much more intricate.

I'd appreciate any and all feedback on this. Thank you all very much.

            Later,

Peace be with you and God bless.

            ~Vince

Yeah, but I either wouldn't get people to spend their free time writing
stupid things (eg. that the sample is from BTN... it's probably from
a commercial sample disk so PE and Derek just sampled from that).
And sorry, that PE sux. Ok, IMHO. ;)

    Hiyis

I made a tape of DT songs for my brother, in an effort to convert him to
being a fan, and I think it actually *worked*!

He always criticised me for liking proggy music like DT and Rush (although
he recently admitted to liking Rush, and after I made a tape for him he said
they were cool) so I decided I would try to save his soul (and my own) by
making him see the light and become a DT fan.

If anyone's interested, here's the track listing I used (a 2 hour tape):

    Side1

    Metropolis
    Surrounded
    Wait for Sleep
    Learning to Live
    Space Dye Vest
    Lifting Shadows off a Dream
    Scarred
    The Ytse Jam

    Side2

    A Change of Seasons
    Afterlife
Ones Who Help to Set the Sun
    Take the Time
    Only a Matter of Time
    Pull Me Under

He admitted to liking DT (he said, "They're ok" when I asked him if he liked
them, then started raving about Rush) which is a better response than I
thought I could get from him.

Just thought I'd share that with y'all.

    Cya!

Strange but true: about 10 years back, my first band was called
"Anne Heap Of Frogs", and my current band's lead guitarist's first
band was called "The Mouldy Cheese Plants"... No shit... Suppose it

    Hi!

I've been in touch with one of the owners of the German label InsideOutMusic
(he's also manager of Enchant) for some time now, so maybe I can help you if
you have questions concerning their bands.

Enchant: Their new album, "Wounded", is out here in Germany on InsideOut for
some weeks now. Magna Carta will NOT release this album in the US - they
wanted to, but the band was not too happy about it ;-). I guess you need some
patience till they find an American label. Anyway, it's a very calm album,
just the opener "Below Zero" and the Dream Theater tribute "Missing" (sounds a
bit like "6:00", a weird drum pattern followed by distorted keys ;-), anyway,
great song) show their heavier side. Their third album will be more in the
vein of these two songs, I guess.

Threshold: Their first singer is back in the band. The new line-up already
recorded a new album, which is said to be a lot heavier than the previous
stuff. Their second vocalist has also made a demo (Or even an album? Don't
know.), also very heavy. I haven't heard anything yet, so that's all I know.

There are a lot of other progressive bands on InsideOut here in Europe (eg
Arena, Symphony X, Seventhsign) if there's a question, let me know.

    How about:

    Bloodgate
    Fury
    Arcane

We thought it would be cool to name the band "Pile of Chopped Potatoes." We
would abbreviete it "PCP." Then, people would ask us why we named our band
after an illegal drug and we would tell them the real meaning. Pretty cheasy
    huh!

Of course, there's always the classic name of "Free Beer" or "No Cover, Free
Draft." Other classics include "I Forgot" or "I Don't Know" in case you were
    announced on the radio.

Those were the good old days weren't they.

I remember a local band called wasted angel! Are you from the Orange
County, NY area? It's weird sometimes to think that the Internet can
put you in touch with people on the other side of the world, then you
find that some of them are also in your "backyard". Just wonderin, by
the way, my band's names were. . .

         Scrotal Assault, then
         Lost Cause
Then I grew up a little, and now I'm in NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT!
I won't go into a whole promo thing here, cause I'm not sure if you're
allowed to do that on here. If anyone is interested though, we're a
thrash/speedmetal/hardcore band, with an intelligent twist, from NY.
We play mostly in NYC! Anyone want to know more, or have I already
         stepped over the line?

Someonw wrote about Yngwie Malmstein(???) possibly being the best guitar
player in the world. I will be the first to admit that YM is incredibly
gifted, but in no way is he the best. I don't think he know how to play
mellow. He shreds great, but he does it ALL the time. Even on a slow
tune, the solo is like constant 32nd or higher notes. This is where John
Petrucci blows YM out of the water. (IMO only) JP can shred with the
best of them, but he also knows when to play slower and more melodic. (ie,
Eve, part of Scarred, etc.) I guess I just like Petrucci's more flowing
style. The deal with Voices and Ytsejam is sort of simple. People who
are actively involved with voices want just DT info. Which they will
get. I subscribed to Voices, but I haven't recieved any info which
wasn't put up on the jam. The reason there is little or no DTC in the
jam is because they are not really doing too much right now, even though
they are doing 5 shows in December. I enjoy the jam more than voices
because I get valuable info about other related bands (Hard
Rock/Prog/Metal) AND Dream Theater. This is just my opinion.
    See ya!

    Lookie people-

Now I feel bad for starting this little "spat" of people who think Vai kicks Satches ass, while Johnson kicks Vai's ass and Satch rules, or something!!! I was not looking to start anything (though it's kinda fun), but I'm sure nobody's opinion of there favorite performers (mine being DT AND VAI) by posting mudslinging rhetoric about them. Must we continue to compare apples to oranges to passionfruit? All three kick ass or they wouldn't be on stage together (just like most everybody gracing the stage of an MTV event have in common that they all suck!) I seriously don't want to make any enemies being a relatively new jammer. Thanx.

There's a band in the San Francisco area calles FUCK. The Chronicle did a story about them a few weeks ago. (My mom sent the article to me.) I was in a band in high school called "Splittin' Image" which was a horrible cheese band, then in college I was in "Nasal Jam" and "Sour Mash", now I'm in "Culture of Despair" and another project I'm working on, I'm trying to push the idea of "Free Beer," "Wun Dollah" or "Nocturnal Emissions" -Adam

    To all Ytse-jammers.

A demo of "Sanguine Surroundings - Stalemate" is set to be printed in limited edition early in the new year. This is a stripped down version of progressive metal music that uniquely combines Dream Theater and Rush prog with the fire of instrumentalists Vai and Satriani. It is in no way comparable to those artists in texture and sound quality however, due to the low $800 budget the two 19 year old musicians had to work with.

So far, the set list of the demo is as follows:

    SANGUINE SURROUNDINGS : Stalemate

    1. PAWN (7:32) 2. KNIGHT (8:10) 3. QUEEN (5:36) 4. KING (11:11)

Guitar and Bass: Dave Gamble (A fellow ytsejammer!) Drums and Perc.: Ramz

The idea is to get a small group of people to dig the music, and hopefully a following will grow... These youngins' have plenty of time and patience.

As of now, the demos sell for $5 plus $2 S/H The band looks only to break even and pay some people back for their contributions.

If you would like to inquire about the band, the demo, etc, send private e-mail to

dgamble@uop.edu and you will be answered promptly

    Thank you jammers----
