Wow, cool, -someone's- been doing some quality reading. :)
This is a reference to the great Horatio Hornblower series of naval adventure books by C.S. Forester, set during the Napoleonic Wars (roughly 1800-1815 plus afterwards). They are widely regarded now as the second-best series of historical novels of ther period, maybe ever. The first-best? Why, the books I'm reading now. :)

'Jammers,
I've been lurking for the last few months, tied up with work and busy with a new girlfriend. Frustration and anxiety have brought me forth and made me write, in hopes of receiving an answer from you, my enlightened brethren and fellow 'Jammers. So here's my question (flame away if it's been overthreaded in the past): I'd like introduce my new girlfriend, Jenny, to DT in a manner that best guarantees her coming to like them as I do. My experience with my last g/f leads me to wonder if there's a better way to expose a new listener to their music. It would be great if Jenny started to like them, I'd be sure to have a great date for their next Austin show, not to mention being able to enjoy them anytime I'm with her. She's 24, and listened to some great bands in her high school years; Van Halen, Whitesnake and Rush being her favorites from back then. Now she's broken away from listening to rock, and her CD collection contains mostly country artists like George Strait, Neal McCoy, and Alan Jackson. (She's a great girl, don't let her current taste in music fool you...) She hasn't liked what I've played for her from some of my other favorite bands; namely old Metallica, Megadeth, and Soundgarden. I want to start her on DT the right way, and maybe build up to some of their heavier stuff once she's heard and liked the softer side of DT. Do any of you have any suggestions as far as a playlist, order of songs, etc., which may have worked for any of you in the past?
In the truth of my confusion,

While we're at it, the history of my old bands:
Origin (teenagers without a clue as to what we were doing - Saratoag Springs NY)
Axiom (commercial mainstream late 80's metal - Saratoga/Schuylerville NY - we were good! some originals, mostly Maiden, Dokken, etc...)
Icy Ballast (mostly metallica and megadeth covers - 1987 I think - Saratoga/Schuylerville NY)
Widowmaker (BEFORE D. Snider stole it - Venice Beach/Hollywood CA 1988 - AC/DCish..I was bored)
Pappo / Widowmaker / The Riff (toured in Argentina for a few months, many Hollywood club gigs - 1988-1990)
Maxx Thrust (was never "in" the band, but I managed them in 1990 - awesome "Queensryche like" band in Albany NY - these guys should have made the big time..really. all original material)
Mr. Potatohead (Saratoga Springs NY - summer 1991 - everything from 60's to 90's rock - best freakin party band I was ever in! FUN! BEER! PARTIES! - we used to take songs like "American Band" and make them "Asparagus Band" etc...we played for beer & bbq, so everyone in town had us at their summer party...ahh the good ole days <G>)
Dream Theater (and then I woke up! alas, it was only a Dream...)
I think Mr. Potatohead was my fav. name, but there were times when we would change the band name during every show to coincide with what was happening at the party...think we were "Jeff's Nose" one night... :)

I said bootleg AKA live performance. I would purchase a boot based a a couple of Jammers recommendations. I would be more clear by saying, any fan with half a brain is going to get information about a bootleg before making a purchase, either listen to it or get some reviews. It is too risky, you know that you like the band, it isn't like when someone is recommending an unknown band (I do that all of the time). The concerns are sound quality and the material on the disk. Not whether or not you like the band. I wouldn't make a boot a first purchase by a particular band.
Later,

You think spelling Dream Theater, Dream Theatre is funny. When Jake E Lee played there solo they wrote Badlands featuring Jack Eilee :) By the way, for those of you who are preying not to be packed in again..don't hold your breath, The new owners are even cheaper then the last owners were. One tip: (that doesn't always work) They used to charge for valet parking...well, now occasionally they try to charge for ANY parking! There is another entrance to the lot in back. If you drive past BitchHill to the light and make a right...follow the road till you see the Art Stock Birch Hill Swim Club sign and make a right. That'll put you in the back of the lot on top of the hill. The parking guys never seem to notice when you come in that way :P Yeah like Im gonna pay those bastards to park there...I'll walk first -Lady Dragon alias the little blonde you'll see walking in way too late already drunk as hell :P

Hey all,
I just stopped home for lunch and what do I find in the mail are my DT tix for Birch HIll!!! Funny thing though, It says "Dream TheatRE." Does anyone know if another similarly named band is playing, or are these tix actually going to be good ;) ?? BTW, I may have an extra one or two. Contact me directly if anyone is interested.
I don't know what the pre-show festivities are shaping up like for those of us NOT seeing RUSH that night, but I was thinking that since this place is also a bar, we should just show up real early (doors open at 8:30 according to my tix) and hang out. I should be seeing RUSH the following night, so it is going to be a weekend to remember.
I will also HOPEFULLY be able to go to the Poughkipsie show as well, depending on whether or not my changing jobs interferes or not, so I hope to be able to hang out there as well. Is there anything being planned for before THAT show???
Gotta go back to work, I'm gonna miss being able to come home for lunch...

Sometimes even Vai, yes I agree. I agree that Johnson is leagues ahead of Satriani too when it comes to improvised soloing. I say improvised because "advanced" implies that some style or sound is actually (hahaha) BETTER than another. Music defies such classifications.
Now I'll tell you why I think this. Johson cranks his style out at 100%. He gives his all. All the time, every time. He's on, he's full speed ahead, he plays from his heart on every album and taps into his soul every time he's on stage. Plus I don't think I've EVER heard Johnson repeat himself during an improvised solo, or from one solo to another for that matter.
Satriani and Vai do not. Most of what they do in an "improvised solo" is comprised of exercises and techniques that they've been through countless times before. For them to break new ground on the instrument known as the guitar would actually be difficult considering all that they're capable of already. It's like expecting Darth Vader and Obi Wan Kenobi to suddenly expand The Force to new levels of power, when everyone knows they're both Jedis of the highest order.
As far as "giving all," Satriani and Vai don't even come close to Johnson. It would take a minimum of seven hours to sit and listen to Satriani exhaust every technique he is capable of doing. Vai's bag of tricks is irrelevant in this discussion because there are only so many years in the life of one person and wasting half of them listening to a man solo would end up being a waste. I say these things because THAT is how these two musicians, in my opinion, would "give their all." It's not about the one-way expressiveness Johnson incorporates into his playing because that's just not Vai or Satriani.
To Vai and Satch it's not so much about channeling emotions through a guitar as it is about splashing the air around them with a sonic tapestry of "incomphrehensible vastness and timeless infinity." They're into communicating and exciting, not baring their souls. Just look at the difference in their stage shows. One concentrates deeply while the other two hang loose, yet all three are simply amazing.
I'm not saying Vai and Satriani don't express themselves. To "give all" means different things for Johnson than it does for Satriani or Vai or a number of other players who don't use the guitar in the same fashion as Johnson. A friend of mind mentioned putting Brian May on the G56 tour, when we both suddenly agreed that he's much more Johnson than he is Vai or Satriani. Do you see what I'm getting at? Turning the dial to FULL POWER does different things for each of them, even though in their own minds and fingers they're performing at their ultimate capability, at their most electrifying level.
Johnson's style ISN'T comprised of individual techniques that are twisted and distorted into every possible direction and sound a la Satch and Vai. His style is simpler than Vai's and Satriani's, and at the same time much, much more complicated. He doesn't jump from technique to technique with terrifying fluidity and accuracy like Satch or Vai, he does everything he can, all at once, which doesn't make sense yet is the only way I can describe his style. He just flows. He's like a cork in a flowing river, riding the peaks and troughs, not a spider dancing across a web like Satch or Vai.
Mapping out a spontaneous Johnson solo, and by that I mean predicting what he'd play, would be to my mind impossible. His sense of intervals and note choice is so original and constant that the only person who can play like him is him. I can imagine a "Vaifest" with guitarists lining up and playing like Vai, sure he has licks that repeat and favorite techniques that can be found on all his albums. The same could be said of Satriani. (this isn't a bad thing, I'm setting up a point to cover the three of them)
But Eric Johnson? I can't even begin to imitate his style because I simply don't understand how his mind works. He can hit any note in the world and it'll work because just when you think he's hit a wrong note, what he's actually done is changed the entire key of his soloing...which inevitably somehow WORKS with whatever he's soloing over. It's like the man is immune to screw-ups. Just listen to the intro to "Cliffs Of Dover" to catch the instant shifts from major to minor to whatever that all end up working in harmony, which is a huge part of how Johnson moves his solos along and is another aspect of Johnson's style that's completely over my head.
In my ever-humble opinion, THAT'S what puts Johnson in a different league from Vai and Satriani. It's not about skill. He has more at his fingertips in that he gives his all, all the time, and does whatever is appropriate, his style being not what he does technique-wise on the guitar but his mental ability to CHOOSE what is appropriate and what follows what. At the same time this style could be called "limiting" because he has no set repertoire of licks and certainly doesn't cover the virtuosic ground of Vai or Satriani...

I love how people use the word "trick" to mean "something very easy which anyone can do and which deserves no attention or awarded merit when exercised." It's like how people tie "excuse" to "lie" as if they're synonyms. Using five fingers, ANY five fingers, at the speed Satriani can, and with the precision he possesses to hit the notes he does in whatever scale or mode he wants, is NOT a "trick." It's an incredible skill that takes YEARS to develop. It's not a magical ability you can suddenly gain by drinking a little potion that comes in a box of Crackerjacks.
> That "pseudo-jizz-jazz" you're referring to is called putting melody > into solos instead of jerking off on the whammy bar all night.
Pardon me. I don't think Eric Johnson could utilize the whammy bar like Reeves Gabrels if he tried. That's not calling him lacking as a musician, but I refuse to call something a diamond if it's missing obvious facets.
> Don't get the wrong impression, I love all of them almost equally > composition wise, but I USUALLY find Johnson takes the cake when it > comes to pure guitar playing.
Define "pure" guitar playing.

All a copyright means (and I'm not a lawyer, but I have read up on the subject) is that you have the song in some tangible form. It can be sheet music, tab, performance recording, whatever. There are some benefits with doing the things the official way and sending your stuff to Washington, but that's neither here nor there for the moment.

Man, talk about your regular landslide of responses!!! Looks like Tapestry will be a winner. IF you didn't hear about it yet (fat chance of that) then check the website: http://www.columbia.edu/~jc309/archives/ginfo/mikebahr.html for the latest, or e-mail me.
I just can't WAIT to get this and PT into all of your hands. The sound on these two releases is just amazing. I'm so proud to be releasing Tapestry at last. Here's how it came about.
Most of you know that a Japanese label released Uncovered earlier in the year: I got it and was disappointed that the sound wasn't as clean and crisp as I had heard it on a certain friend's cassette at Con II. Plus, that friend was (wisely) holding the show away from me because I wouldn't promise not to release it. Since I would never betray someone's trust, the show just had to wait. I felt that simply releasing the Japanese copy would not do much, even though people would save money off the price of their version, because of the slightly lacking sound.
Flash to last month, when I get hired by a rapidly-expanding environmental company called Equinox International. (this is in addition to my CD work). A lot of musicians have turned to Equinox to make them enough money to further their musical careers, and I meet one person who claims to have a connection with Elektra entertainment. I decide that if I can't get a tape of the Ronnie Scotts gig from my connections to the band, I'll try and go in the other way and get it from the opposite side: the label. I explain what the RS gig was, and how much I wanted it to possibly offer on the net as a fanclub CD, and sure enough, 3 weeks later, I get a DAT in the mail from the guy's contact at Elektra. It is a SOUNDBOARD DAT, pre-mixed, of the RS gig!! complete!!! I about jumped out of my clothing. The enclosed note says "I heard you wanted this. Have fun with it. It is not slated for release at any time, so it will probably be a real collector's item in the future." Wow!!!!!
And so it goes. I find out that if I cut the ACOS stuff, about 73 and a half minutes of covers gig material remains on the tape, just perfect to fill "Tapestry: A Cascade of Covers". Furthermore, I had just finished pressing all the Inside the Storm discs, so I figured it was time to press forward once again. And so it goes that this fantastic release will finally reach you. I hope you all enjoy it.
Orders are open!! Let's sell this sucker out in two weeks! IT CAN BE DONE!! Take it easy all...

Anybody know where that comes from?? :-)
A few other local (Western Mass) names I've run across are:
-Plastic X -The Trim -The Sighs -Johnny Quest -The Blur -Kyruss -Stranger -Rain -Time And Place -Felony
Some names while in school in Miami were:
-Kick The Cat -Real Life Sketchbook -The Jongleurs -Mary Magdalene -Zen -Second Coming -Jennifer Culture -Load Face -Day By The River -Ocean Juice
Obligatory DTC: I notice there's a guitar solo by JP called Schitzophrenia. Perhaps he's the one with the interest in this topic, considering one of the interpretations of "A Mind Beside Itself". Just thought I'd mention it.
