Having just got my tix to the Providence show (on the 12th, by the way), I
noticed that the tickets say "all ages". Could this be true ?? I recall
many younger fans really being pissed at the 18+ thing last time around. I
hope they still sell beers .....

And, will there be a mini Ytsecon like before the show in New London ?? If
so, could it be a bit more lively this time ??!! Nice people for certain,
but it had the feeling of a morgue.

    Later,

i'm sure it would rule, but they'd have a tough time competing with the mind
and work of Jon Oliva, IMO. :)

i went out and bought Bug Alley a while back the first second i heard it
came out :) gary hoey is my all time fav solo guitarrist. and surfdog
records is one amazing record company with a great cause. The soundtrack to
the endless summer II is IMO his best release, and also my favorite cd :)
for a while i had him ahead of DT in my collection.. the only guy ahead of
them. the endless summer is also my favorite flick, which happens to be
(you guessed it) right in front of live in tokyo in my video collection :)

    hey,

    time for some friendly conversation

    >
    >> Jimi Hendrix, Steve Ray Vaughn, Wes Montgomery, Jeff Beck, and
    >> uh...some other guy. The only jazz I see there is Wes Montgomery.
    >> Johnson is from texas and has a lot of that in his roots, so don't
    >> pigeonhole him as a jazz player.
    >
    >Makes total sense. That's why Petrucci's style can't be jazzy. He's from
    >Long Island, New York. Everyone knows you have to be from New Orleans to
    >play jazz. You can't just "study" the style, you have to be from down
    >south. The same goes for the blues...too bad Petrucci wasn't born in
    >Mississippi.
    >
    Yo Bafu,
Please don't put words in my mouth, you seem to be taking my
statements out of line. I said don't pigeonhole him, or confine him, to
being a jazz player. By stating that he's from Texas I was implying that he
had a lot of that in his roots, and his sound, which is something he talks
about a lot...I never said he's not a jazz player or anything...

    >> Sorry but Jeff Beck truly started (and ruled long before Satch) most of
    >> the stuff Satch is doing. Check out Blow by Blow to hear this...
    >
    >Arguing in reverse like this by naming musicians from the past is a great
    >way to completely devalue anything the musicians of the present time have
    >contributed. I'm sure Satriani would love to hear you say this to his
    >face. I'm sure he'd feel good about his innovations and years of selfless
    >instructing and playing. "How productive," he'd think, "I've spent the
    >last twenty years evolving into Jeff Beck Junior."
    >

I never said Satch is a Beck junior either, I said Beck started a lot of the
stuff Satch is doing, which is the truth....

I hate having conversations through the jam like this because no matter what
you type you can't seem to represent yourself as a whole. For instance I
originally stated that I feel Johnson is the best of the G3 players and was
jumped on because people took it as ragging on the other 2 guys, even though
I enjoy listening to all of them. Not to mention what I say gets taken out
of line, as with what happened above.

    >
    >so i'm confused. is the providence show on the 12th or the 13th?
    >

It's the 12th, I just got tickets for it :) Also, does anybody know if
Strand is a seated place? My tickets say GA, which would most likely imply
standing, but I know it's an old movie theater place, so I thought it had
    seats. Anybody know???

You bastard! :) I called the day before they went on sale, and they told
me to come into the store (East Coast Music Mall) the next day. I did, but
the ticket-printer was messed up, so they told me to come back later, which
I couldn't do. I did get them the next day, #22 and #23. I asked her, "Am I
only the 22nd and 23rd tickets sold?" She said, "No, because we just
started numbering them." Oh well. In talking to them, I guess they were
getting phone calls like crazy about the clinic. Cool. I hope you all make
it there (Mike and John P. to be there, this should be beyond excellent)!

okay. i am going to the shows at the Chance and at Toads. I am curious
to hear from those of you who have seen DT at a club show before - how
early is a smart time to arrive? how many people usually show? and where
is the bestest place to be during the show. personally i had planned on
cramming myself as close to the stage as possible, but i have heard that
the balcony/patio/other spot is the best place to be.
    thanks -

Hopefully this will be my last post about those stupid polls of mine...
My ISP keeps phuqing up... Please E-MAIL your entries to me, instead of
using the forms :-< The worst thing that can happen (I hope) is that
your mail bounces... Right now, I keep getting HALF entries, and I hate
having to ask people to mail me the rest after they've gone through the
trouble of participating... I'll just have to enter everything myself...

Anyway, check out the temporary results on my homepage and mail me your
votes if you haven't done that yet ! I'll add your name to the list of
participants, so you know your votes made it to the poll :->

I'll be updating the results pages every day, until December 1st, when
the polls close... I need *lots* of votes to make this thing *really*
interesting :-> So mail me your Marillion and Dream Theater top 10
lists :-> Here are the categories again... (last time, I promise!)

Marillion poll : Dream Theater :

    1. Favourite Fish/Marillion albums 1. Favourite album
    2. Favourite Hogarth/Marillion albums 2. Favourite WDADU songs
    3. Favourite Fish solo albums 3. Favourite Images & Words songs
    4. Favourite Fish/Marillion songs 4. Favourite LatM songs
    5. Favourite Hogarth/Marillion songs 5. Favourite Awake songs
    6. Favourite Fish solo songs 6. Favourite ACOS songs

I saw the European Music Awards, too. I figured I'd stick around and
see what Metallica was going to play. I figured it'd be Until it
Sleeps or something new. Boy, was I ever wrong. They actually
played, yes, Last Caress, which segued nicely into So What. I don't
really care for either song, but I was definitely surprised. It was
also hilarious hearing all the empty spaces in So What where they
took out the certain words (though they did fail to take "cock" out
    once).

Oh, and Rip, My Fates CD is the one with IGoD as one track (when I
first saw it had only, like, six tracks, I was wondering, but then I
realized that the album was about an hour or so long, and realized
that IGoD was over 20 min. long, so I was very pleased :). Cheers.

    You're being overly literal. ;)

    >Photographs are. You can't transfer thoughts and memories to other people
    >by thinking at them, so no one's worried if you "watch" or "listen to" a
    >performance.

Commonly, though, photographs are what we take to hang onto and remind us
of our experience. (If you want to be completely literal yet again,
psychologically speaking, we don't relive anything, we reconstruct it.)

    >> There are other businesses that allow me to create mementos of my visit
    >> for personal, non-commerical use.
    >
    >What businesses did you have in mind?

Not any one in particular...but we could use, say, Universal Studios as
an example. It's a business, and, technically, you could photograph
their sets (for what's it's worth, Warner Brothers claims that any sound
stage they create can't even be used for another show on their lot
because it's now a copyrighted item). They don't mind...as long as the
photos are not used for *commerical* purposes. See, the difference
between what I brought up and what most people here have been discussing
is the right to sell the experience; I'm speaking only in terms of
    something one keeps for himself/herself.

    >Anyway, to begin with, in my opinion everyone owns themselves. They own

Just this past week, my local paper had an article on photographing
people without permission. Some photojournalists argue that if you're
out in public, you're part of a public scene, and, hence, up for grabs.
The examples brought up in the article were all those famous photos like
the burning girl in Vietnam and a student huddled over a deceased
classmate at Kent State. No express permission was ever given or asked
for. I'm not stating my own opinion on the issues, just speaking of what
    I've read.

    >Did you know Warner Brothers owns the melody we refer to as "Happy
    >Birthday?" If you sing it aloud and someone from Warner Brothers hears you
    >and is really bored and wants to damage your simple pleasure they can take
    >your birthday-loving ass to court.

Talk to the Campfire Girls then. They fought and won a lawsuit about
singing songs such as "Happy Birthday." This was just in the last month
    or two.

I'm very interested in hearing if anyone out there has heard the new
Nevermore. I've heard nothing but good from this CD. There are some
serious elements of progressive with lots of complexity on the CD
from what I'm told. I imagine it's pretty thrashy like "Death", but
yet more melodic, but alot better vocals...Let me know if anyone has
heard it yet. I'm still trying to find it....

I'm a guitarist who has been playing since Junior High (I'm 19 now).
I have pretty much been in the same band, through its many various forms,
functions, and lineups from the beginning. The weird thing is that other
than me, the only common thread between all its various incarnations has
been the name, The Max Rebo Band, a name that we stole from Return of the
Jedi. We've played every style of music from jazz to 70's folk to funk to
classic rock to progressive. We even had a country song in the old days.
Sadly, though, the highpoint of our career, gigwise, was covering "Pull me
Under" on the same stage where the boyz themselves once played that song
(Chapter II Sailsbury, MA). I say sadly, because it was probably the worst
performance of that song anyone will ever see anywhere (Though at the time
we thought we were the nut). It was still cool, though, because it was one
of our first "real" gigs. Anyway, that's my little "bands I have been in"
anecdote. I will leave with the question, have any of you musicians out
there attempted to tackle a Dream Theater song in the band you were in, and
if so, how did it turn out?

    Later,
