Well, actually I got the name from a Megadeth song, "Rust in Peace...Polaris".

This band started out as "Polaris", then changed to "Trauma" (which I ripped off of Cliff Burton's old band), then I left and they became "Salt Water" and then they finally settled on "Scrape".

Right now I'm in the process of forming a metal band and we have a cool name. We just happen to be missing one piece of the puzzle--the bass player. If any of you know a cool bass player in the Phoenix or Tucson area please let me know.

    Later,

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone out there in Ytse land had a copy of the Indianapolis, IN show from the I&W tour? You know that one where they boys didn't play LtL at the end because it was so fucking hot in that place. If so I would be very interested in getting a dub or it since I was there. Also the Milwaukee show from the Awake tour, I was there too *grin*. Heck and I will be at the upcoming Providence show so see you all there, I will be flying in from Madison, WI btw.

The best band name is TBA. Just think about it next time you are looking in the paper for shows.

Hi there once again fellow jammers!!!

Someone mentioned the band Vicious Rumors. I have a few of their CDs and would highly recommend them to anyone. For those who don't know, the singer, Carl Albert, was tragically killed in a car accident last year and now one of the guitar players now does the singing. I've heard their new CD "Something's Burning" with the new singing and it was quite heavy but still kinda cool..... "Word of Mouth" is probably my favorite VR Cd. Carl was an amazing singer and it's another tragic loss in the world.

    > From: Matthew Sirois <ms014e@uhura.cc.rochester.edu> > Subject: liner notes > > different note: can anyone tell me what the story is with Magellan?

I'll tell you about that lunatic. He died several weeks ago of scurvy or something on the high seas, but don't expect the full story because his crew's never coming back. Anyone with crazy ideas like that man deserves whatever watery death Neptune served him on the foamy squalls. That entire voyage is doomed to failure...

---- > From: acook@tiac.net (acook) > Subject: counting 'jammers > > You must have him confused with someone else, he easily blew the other > guys off the stage. (Eric Johnson)

Right. Chin on his chest, mesmerized to his hands, headphones to block out the stage noise (the life around him), I'm sure he blew the other guys off the stage. Now all he needs to learn how to do is pretend he's having fun in a manner recognizeable by an audience of people like me who know nothing about the guitar.

    > In Johnson's instructional video he talks about how his playing is a > mix of these players...

Regardless of who you're influenced by, there's no reason why someone listening to your music won't hear a bunch of styles and influences that you obviously didn't intend. Someone told me once that I sound like Allan Holdsworth. I've never heard Allan Holdsworth. I have no idea what he sounds like. The guy then said, "Yeah Allan, he's a Steinberger player, kind of like Vito Bratta. Vito has shades of Allan's style here." That's when it clicked in my mind, because I consider Vito to be a huge influence on my playing.

    > Jimi Hendrix, Steve Ray Vaughn, Wes Montgomery, Jeff Beck, and > uh...some other guy. The only jazz I see there is Wes Montgomery. > Johnson is from texas and has a lot of that in his roots, so don't > pigeonhole him as a jazz player.

Makes total sense. That's why Petrucci's style can't be jazzy. He's from Long Island, New York. Everyone knows you have to be from New Orleans to play jazz. You can't just "study" the style, you have to be from down south. The same goes for the blues...too bad Petrucci wasn't born in Mississippi.

    > Sorry but Jeff Beck truly started (and ruled long before Satch) most of > the stuff Satch is doing. Check out Blow by Blow to hear this...

Arguing in reverse like this by naming musicians from the past is a great way to completely devalue anything the musicians of the present time have contributed. I'm sure Satriani would love to hear you say this to his face. I'm sure he'd feel good about his innovations and years of selfless instructing and playing. "How productive," he'd think, "I've spent the last twenty years evolving into Jeff Beck Junior."

My Fates Warning "No Exit" with IGoD on it is indeed one song NOT separated into sections. I wasn't aware that there was another version.

Aaron "Jam Lurker" Silverman rears his head, and begins with:

    >I haven't posted in a long time, and I'm a week behind in my 'Jams, but >here's a response to Rikki's comments from a week ago, regarding the >bootleg argument.

That "Rikki" character he's refering to would be me. :)

Last week, I wrote, (on the fly, the best thing I could come up with at the time):

    |Here's my analogy: You go and buy a car. Then you go and *use* the new car |to deliver pizzas. You're now making money off of the car that the |dealership sold you. Does the dealership say, "Hey, you're using the car we |sold you to make money. We deserve to get a cut of whatever you make using |the car *we* sold you."? No, they don't. Why? Because the business |transaction between you and the dealership is complete. If you want to take |advantage of the fact that you now have a means to make a buck to pay your |utilities, good for you. Use the car, deliver some pizzas, earn a living, |whatever.

    >The problem with your car/pizza delivery analogy and with your last >comment that "a bootleg is an illegal copy of copyrighted material and a >live recording is just that" is that the live recording IS copyrighted >material! The car is not.

I'd imagine that the car's design would have some sort of protection, much like a copyright, but under some other name.

    > Although, if you bought a car, then copied >it exactly (i.e., built identical cars) and sold the copies for profit, >the car company would sure have a case against you!

Here's where your argument fails, my friend: You are comparing this process of "copying exactly" to be the same as if I made CD replicas of Awake, or I&W (for example) and sold *those*. This >directly< impacts sales of the legitimate versions, and very much so hurts the artists and those affiliated with them. I am completely against this. (Unless you're James Colberg and you're making replicas of Acoustic Dreams. Can't wait for my copy! Hee haw!)

This bootleg discussion, which was appropriately put to a close by one Mike Bahr and his authoritative description of the bootleg process, is about the distribution of live recordings, that otherwise would not *exist*, and ^not^ about dubbing already-existing material (eg., Awake, Houses of the Holy, etc.).

Of course, copyright infringement is another story, which too was discussed.

    >Sorry Rick, you know I still love ya, baby!

    And it's a good thing! :)

Oh, by the way, I'll have your COPY of the DT BOOTLEG _Classics_Live_ in the mail for you real soon. I finally got around to picking up some blank tapes. I think I'll use the leftover space on the tape to include so other DT BOOTLEG material for your L I S T E N I N G P L E A S U R E. Heh. :)

Hey, does anyone else out there think it would be cool if DT did a rock/prog. metal opera. I think if they did it would kick Tomy and Quadrophenia's butts. Or maybe they could do the entire music score for a major motion picture. That would be cool as well. I would go see any movie that had DT listed in the music credits. Just a thought. I have this one "with less artwork" :) The way it goes is that IGoD is all in one track, divided into 8 "steps". So, when the "track" changes, you see that the "step" of the track changes. At least in my stereo. So, e.g., on "Cold Daze", it says track 6 step 2. If this helps on something, the catalog number is 3984-14047-2.

That's like >saying bassists who play fretted bass are less of musicians than fretless >bassists because with fretless bass you have to watch your technique more so >you don't go out of intonation.

No, it's different. Using a whammy bar in a musical situation usually means bending something to a different pitch, ie harmonics or open strings. This is fine, however when one starts just banging on it for no aparent reason except they can't think of anything else to do in that part of the solo (my opinion of the Vai solo in Little Alligator) it gets old real fast. For instance, I like the use of the whammy for emphasis in For The Love of God, but when I saw him live he relied on it way to much. It wasn't musical a lot of the time....

As far as your using frets example...frets are guidelines for where you put your fingers to make notes. Using frets excessively does not make unusual or weird sounds that somebody might think sound cool, and then do it over and over again.

I've always liked Gary Hoey. Another one that nobody ever mentions is Ted Nugent. He's generally not fast, but his songs have a certain quality to them that just makes you wanna grab a guitar and pound it out with him. In his earlier days before he turned more hard and bluesy, back in the 60's, he was one of the original prog-rockers. The song "Journey to the Center of Your Mind" by the Amboy Dukes - that's him on guitar. Very interesting "concept" album there.

Greetings jammers, New to the jam, been lurking for a while, and finally have the time to post. I was flipping through the TV late last night and what channel did my remote lead me to?(it was the remote's fault) But the infamous eMpTyV. I would normally only leave it on MTV if maybe Beavis and Butthead were on, but I couldn't resist; the MTV Europe Video Music Awards was being replayed on the mother station. I figured that I would get a good peek at some different artists from what the good ole American station gives out in real big doses. But who wins Best Rock award? The Pumpkin people. Yes not only did the Smashing Pumpkins hoard all the American awards, MTV lets them win in Europe too. But really got me is when they announced who would be on the show performing, the same damn people they had on the American show; Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, and the like. So is MTV attempting to shovel the same stuff to the Europeans as they are doing so successfully here in the U.S.? Maybe some European jammers could shed a little light on this, because I thought nothing could get worse than MTV brainwashing America let alone going overseas with their little ploy. What next, the cancelling of Headbanger's Ball in Europe? Just had to get this off my chest... Thanks for tolerating this little pondering...
