His sense of humor reminds me of Vai.

His stage presence reminds me of Johnson. (well, JP bares his teeth more)

His innovation reminds me of Satriani.

I usually don't compare unless I'm being forced to make a choice.
Paralleling the merits of people who aren't competing among themselves is
to my mind a waste of time. I'll be alright if I refrain from envisioning
Johnson and Petrucci in a cutting contest. If you hold a gun in my mouth
and place a six-pointed star in my left hand and a cross in my right, I'll
compare those two symbols and choose between them. Otherwise, I see little
    point in comparison.

All I can muster here is that Petrucci has the versatility and chops of
Satriani and Vai, combined with the ability to choose his licks extremely
tastefully and truly improvise like Johnson. (The key word here is
    "spontanUity.")

I saw him in August. I agree with his face being fat, but I don't
think he looked quite as bad as you say. He looked skinnier than he did in
fairly recent pictures that I've seen. It did appear that his hair was
thinning slightly. (I thought the pirate-style shirt he was wearing was
the worst thing about his appearance.)

    >Got DT tickets for the Providence show - who else is going?
I don't know if "who else" means me, but I'm going.
Did anyone else get their ticket from Strawberries? They gave me a
little slip of paper that was filled out by hand; I was expecting something
    like what TicketMaster gives you.
I was just listening to _Antiquities_. Does anyone else think
James's performance on "Take the Time" is awful? I'm glad he didn't sing
it that way when I saw the band (Birch Hill, 12-29-95). (And why did Mike
Bahr list "The Mirror" as "Puppies On Acid" when the entire song is
    played?)

My old band, Blind Justice, played with these guys at a small club in
Salisbury, Massachussetts years ago, and they were a GREAT band and a
bunch of GREAT guys. I think I still have the band picture they signed
for me hiding in the closet too. Definitely check 'em out!

(IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU ARE SEEING THIS POST, PLEASE
READ IT THROUGH COMPLETELY, THERE IS ALOT OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION)

    Hey All ....

Here is my new weekly posting about how to get the most
(or least if you don't like us) out of the ytsejam. This will
be coming out weekly (hopefully) at least for a while since we are
quickly gaining subscribers since school is now back in session.
I may post it less often after a while, but for now, it will be
    weekly.

To get on to the Dream Theater Mailing List:

    Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com
For the subject of the message put:

            asdf

In the body of the message put:

            subscribe ytsejam Your Name

replace Your Name with your real name (eg: Ryan Skadberg).
You should recieve a confirmation letter in the your
mailbox within 24 hours. If you do not, mail
ytsejam-owner@ax.com and I will help you out as soon
    as possible.

To change the mode you recieve the Dream Theater Mailing List in:
There are two ways you can recieve the ytsejam. The first is in
digest which is the default. This sends you a large message which
contains 15-20 emails each. The other is ack mode, which means
you recieve each piece of mail as it comes through. To do this:

    Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com
For the subject of the message put:

            asdf

In the body of the message put:

            set ytsejam mail ack

            OR

            set ytsejam mail digest

If you have any problems, please mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com.

To get off the Dream Theater Mailing List:

    Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com
For the subject of the message put:

            asdf

In the body of the message put:

            unsubscribe ytsejam

You should recieve a confirmation letter within 24 hours.
If you don't, once again, please mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com
and I will help you out as soon as I can.

To recieve files from the Dream Theater Mailing List:

There are many files kept by the mailing list server.
The biggest group are old issues of the jam. It is
archived since 1275. If you are looking for an issue
earlier than that, please mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com and
I will see what I can do. There are also other files
kept on the server. These include Mike Bahr CD Updates,
The "UnOfficial" Dream Theater SongBook and some others.
Any time I add something I usually send a post to the
jam so everyone knows about it. To get a list of the
    files available from the server:

    Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com
For the subject of the message put:

            asdf

In the body of the message put:

            index ytsejam

This will send you a list of all the files available from
the server. To retrieve one of these files:

    Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com
For the subject of the message put:

            asdf

In the body of the message put:

            get ytsejam filename

In place of filename, put the name of the file you
    want.

    Basic Rules:

There are some basic rules to the jam which make everyone's
reading alot more pleasant. Please try and follow them as
closely as possible. I will send out warnings to people
who blatantly disobey these. You get one warning, a second
offense will get your jam priviledges taken away.

    1. Do not post just for the sake of posting. There is already
a lot of valid traffic on this list, we don't need unnecessary
posts which are a waste of everyone's time. The basic rule
you should all try to follow is to think before you post.

    2. No Top Ten (Five, Twenty, Thirty, etc) lists. These lists
are a waste. They take up alot of bandwidth and fill up
everyone's mailbox much faster than they would like it filled
up. If you want to know everyone's top somethings, please ask
for ALL responses to be mailed directly to you. This has been
done with the end results posted to the jam and it was very very
    nice.

    3. Do not start / participate in / complain about long off-topic
discussions. These have gotten WAY out of hand in the past.
If one starts, I will post once saying to stop and take it to
private email, anyone continuing the discussion will
recieve a warning. These include such topics as God, NIN, Blind
    Melon, bands selling out, etc.

    4. Private E-Mail is a wonderful thing. Use it when you think it
may be more useful than posting to the jam.

    5. Last, but not least, this is YOUR ytsejam. I am around,
and I do administrative work, but I do not say what can/cannot
be talked about (most of the time) or moderate in any real way.
I am the Ytsejam Administrator more than Moderator. Don't complain
if the jam seems to be going downhill, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Basically, that is all the basic info. As always, if you have any
problems feel free to mail me. I get ALOT of mail on a daily basis,
so it sometimes takes me a while to get back to you, but 99% of the
time, I will get back to you eventually.

Thanks for Reading and Enjoy the List!!!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
** new since last update * new in last two updates
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

** After a lot of work, I managed to get all of my records in order, so this
** update is 100% accurate in regards to the numbers of shirts sold and
    ** remainging, etc...

** Due to unfortunate circumstances (read: school), this weeks shipment was
** postponed two days, and instead went out on Friday. I appologize for any
** inconvenience to those who's orders were filled late.

** This is important: If you want to get your shirts before Christmas,
** order *now*! After December eleventh, there will be no more orders
** filled until the end of January. Dealing with a different address and
** hauling the shirts between Columbia and St.Louis would prove too much of
** a hastle, so I'm not going to be taking any orders during that period.
** If you want one before the end of the year, get your order in before then.

    * I finally heard back from the order that was misdirected from the first
    * shipment. The shirt has now arrived, and so far every order that should
    * be accounted for by now has been.

The XXL shirts are now sold out, and the XXXL shirts have been sold out
since last week. There are still three Medium shirts, 19 Large, and 92
    XL remaining.

I did manage to make the money to make the final payment in time for the
shirts. From this point on, the shirts will be going towards paying back
my loan for the downpayment. Thanks again to everyone who has ordered,
and all of you who plan to.

The Ytsejam shirt page has been updated once again. It has a direct
scan of the front and backs of the shirts, so you can see what they
*really* look like, and not just what they are *supposed* to look like.
    Check it out at:

    http://www.cclabs.missouri.edu/~c675311/ytsejam/

I would just like to take this chance to thank everyone who has
been so supportive of the shirts... It's nice to know that my work on
    this project is appriciated.

Well, the sales at YtseCon III went fairly well, thank you to everyone
who bought a shirt. I've sold something like 70 shirts in all, which
is a good start. I'm hoping that orders will pick up again soon, now
that the Con has come and gone and things have calmed down a bit.

I have the shirts in my possession now, they are sitting in three big
boxes that take up too much space in my tiny dorm room. :) They all
came out exceptionally well, better than I expected, in fact. Process
jobs (printing color graphics one color at a time) are notorious for
severely distorting the graphic, but in this case, it came out very
    true to the original.

The shirts were premiered at YtseCon III in New York, and everyone I
talked to seems very happy with them.

I have added another section to the WWW page for the shirts. It's a
compilation of all the comments I have recieved, or that have been posted
to the jam. You can check this out and see how opinions are running.

I opened a checking account in Columbia to better handle the orders I'm
recieving and also get them out without incident or delay. So far things
    are working well.

    =======
    Details
    =======

The Ytsejam shirts are two sided prints. The front of the shirt features
a *full color* raytraced graphic from Chris Hailey in Washington. The
graphic is a beautifully done scene with the Majesty logo floating behind
a group of marble columns on a tile floor with a wide view of space
    visible behind.

The back of the shirt is in a solid light blue color. The majority
of the design is a huge Majesty logo, framed by the Dream Theater title
at the top, the mailing list address on the sides and "Ytsejam" at the
bottom. Below that is "Internet Mailing List" between two more Majesty
    logos.

The current lot of shirts is 217 (they printed up more than I asked
for, but I'm not complaining). If those run out, and demand is high
enough, I may run another with a slightly different design.

You can check out all of the details, as well as a preview of the shirts at:
    http://www.cclabs.missouri.edu/~c675311/ytsejam/

Please note: Due to some legal issues, the University will no longer allow
me to keep this commercial advertisement on their server. To sidestep this
issue, Chris Merlo was kind enough to put the page up on his account.
Please go to the URL above and follow the link to the new site.

    =======
    Pricing
    =======

The cost of the shirts is $16 each. The shirt is damn close to concert
quality, so $16 is a steal (last Dream Theater concert I was at charged
$23 for a shirt!). If you require a size larger than XL, please let me
know ASAP so I can get those orders in. There is an additional $1 charge
for each size increase (ie. XXL = $17). If you are picking the shirt up
from me directly the $16 price stands. If you can't get the shirt in
person, you can order one through the mail for $20 to cover shipping.

I spoke with the people at the post office and I've decided to set the
shipping prices outside the USA at $9, for a total of $25. I realize
this is damn expensive for a tshirt, and I'm sorry. If individual prices
are signifigantly less expensive, I will gladly return a check for the
    balance.

    The rundown:
M, L or XL shirt, picked up: $16
M, L or XL shirt, mailed in the US: $20
M, L or XL shirt, mailed outside the US: $25
    XXL add $1
    XXXL add $2

    Ordering
    ========

The shirts are open to mail ordering now. Mail orders will be shipped
out every Wednesday via Priority Mail for US orders, and airmail for
all others. Checks and money orders will be cashed before the order goes
out, most likely on Monday. So far, mail orders have gone well, the only
problem I have had has been with the bank, not the post office, so don't
worry about your orders. All US orders are insured for the amount paid
for the shirts and shipping, and insurance on airmail depends on the
    country and other aspects.

To order, send a check or money order for the proper US dollar amount (see
    pricing above) to:

    Pat Griffin
    537A Hudson Hall
    1202 E. Rollins St.
    Columbia, MO 65201

Make them payable to Pat Griffin, and remember this in US dollars.

    Be sure to include:
            Your name.
            Email address.
            Mailing address.
            Phone number.
Quantity of shirts you want to order.
            The size of each.
Whether this order is for pickup for mail order.

I will keep you up to date on the status of the shirts through email.

Hey everyone! I have been in a series of bar bands with stuid names
(which were on a par with the stupid people in them:) such as Test
Tease, Test Tickle (say them out loud), Nemes, The Back Doors, The Hot
Nuts, and Sure Thing. Sooo stupid...

Well, on a DT note, my Ytsevan will be driving from Brewton, Alabama, to
Old Bridge, New Jersey, to catch the Birch Hill show on the 14th. As of
now there are 3 people, counting myself, that will definitely be making
the trip. If anyone wants to hitch a ride somewhere along the way, let
me know! Another person would be welcomed very much! I will be leaving
Birmingham, Alabama, around 10:30 PM on the 12th. I'll be stopping in
Atlanta to pick up passengers, but another 'jammer would make the ride
better. So...if you live somewhere along the east coast and would like a
ride to Birch Hill, email me. Your presence is requested:) I will be
very liberal as far as venturing out of the way to pick up passengers,
    so don't be shy!

    Hey gang,

I haven't posted in a long time, and I'm a week behind in my 'Jams, but
here's a response to Rikki's comments from a week ago, regarding the
    bootleg argument.

The problem with your car/pizza delivery analogy and with your last
comment that "a bootleg is an illegal copy of copyrighted material and a
live recording is just that" is that the live recording IS copyrighted
material! The car is not. Although, if you bought a car, then copied
it exactly (i.e., built identical cars) and sold the copies for profit,
the car company would sure have a case against you! (Then again, if you
taped a concert and then used the tape to sell pizzas, I guess I wouldn't
    have a problem with that. :) )

Of course, I'm being a hypocrite since I have a few boots myself, but I
don't feel too bad since I have never bought a boot in place of a
legitimate release. . .I think I own every possible real release by any
band of whom I have a boot. I do feel a pang of guilt that I have paid
someone for someone else's copyrighted material. Then again, now that I
think about it, I haven't bought a boot in about 5 years, so I guess I'm
not such a bastard after all! :)

Sorry Rick, you know I still love ya, baby!

Along these same lines, is this new phenomenon of "DJ mix tapes" being
peddled on the street going on everywhere, or just here in NYC? It seems like a really obnoxious trend, and they're all over the place these
    days.

    Party on,

    DJ Kuul A

    THE WHALE LIVES!!!

PS OK, reading on, I found the mention of bands which allow taping. . .I
got "taping section" seats at a Metallica show in '91(and I never even
sold my tapes :) ), does anyone know if they still have a taping
section? Or any other bands that currently do this?
